Atalanta humble winter champions AC Milan25 Jan 202101:06:06

What a weekend of Serie A that was! AC Milan were crowned winter champions despite being hammered by Atalanta, as Inter slipped up away to Udinese.

A very cold Conor Clancy is here as host, fresh in the door from Parma's loss to Sampdoria, and he's joined by a happy Vito Doria and an old Kevin Pogorzelski.

Juventus got back to winning ways, while Lazio and Roma also won and Napoli fell at Hellas Verona.

It's just Kevin Pogorzelski and Conor Clancy this week in Vito Doria's absence, but the former did his best to carry the load lost without Vito.

AC Milan were the big winners, winning against Torino and then seeing Inter and Roma drop points. Juventus saw off Sassuolo, Atalanta won again and Lazio picked up three important points at Parma.

Stefano Pioli - The Kessie whisperer04 Jan 202101:03:27

Back for the new year, the Forza Italian Football Podcast is here with the first episode of 2021.

Unfortunately without Vito Doria this week, Conor Clancy had Kev Pogorelski and Felipe Caicedo-like super-sub, Rome-based Alasdair Mackenzie, to help him through.

AC Milan stay top, Inter hit six, Atalanta scored five, Juventus got four, and basically everyone at the top - Sassuolo and Lazio aside - won. At the bottom, Genoa held Lazio and Torino picked up a huge win at Parma to possibly end Fabio Liverani's time there.

That and more in this week's pod.

It's the penultimate Forza Italian Football Podcast of the year!

There's one more Round to play before Christmas, but Conor Clancy was joined by Kev Pogorzelski and Vito Doria to chat through all of Round 13's action, and there was a lot to get through.

The Cristiano Ronaldo fanboys were out in full force as their Portuguese icon bagged twice away to Parma in a routine win that kept Juventus unbeaten in Serie A this season. Elsewhere, Inter and AC Milan both won as well, while Lazio saw off Napoli and Atalanta bounced back with a big comeback win over Roma.

It's just a two-man show for the midweek games, with Kevin Pogorzelski staying up late to keep Conor Clancy company, and not for the first time.

The guys talked through all of the midweek action, which threw up seven draws from the ten games, including Juventus-Atalanta and even Genoa-AC Milan.

AC Milan are so good that they've made Serie A boring08 Dec 202000:55:39

There wasn't much excitement on the pitch this week, but the Forza Italian Football Podcast are here to try to make your Italian football intake as entertaining as possible.

Conor Clancy was joined by a grumpy Kev Pogorzelski and Vito Doria to talk through an unusually goal-shy round of action.

AC Milan are still unstoppable, Juventus won late in the Derby della Mole, Napoli won again in that Maradona kit and, unfortunately, there was a lot of terrible football as well.

Napoli inspired as Serie A mourns Diego Maradona30 Nov 202001:09:59

Serie A is mourning the greatest player to ever play football this week, following the passing of Diego Maradona.

His loss is felt more than most in Naples, where Napoli honoured their icon with a 4-0 hammering of Roma, rounding off an eventful Sunday of Serie A. Conor Clancy, Kev Pogorzelski and Vito Doria got together again to chat El Diego, Napoli and all of the weekend's football.

Elsewhere, Juventus dropped points again, as did Atalanta, Lazio, and Sassuolo. Inter and AC Milan, though, marched on with big wins.

Lecce stun Lazio, Belotti and De Ketelaere refind form22 Aug 202300:54:19

The 2023/24 Serie A season is finally underway, and we didn't need to wait long for surprises to be sprung. We are here to talk through all of the Serie A Matchday 1 action.

After Napoli had overcome an early scare at Frosinone to win and Inter subsequently saw off Monza, both AS Roma and Lazio slipped up on Sunday against Salernitana and Lecce respectively. There was good news for the Lupi though as Andrea Belotti ended his 15-month wait for a Serie A goal, scoring twice in an excellent performance, but Lazio threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 in Salento, conceding twice after the 85th minute.

Elsewhere, Charles De Ketelaere enjoyed a dream debut for Atalanta, helping them to a 2-0 win at Sassuolo, and Juventus started well with a comprehensive 3-0 win away to Udinese.

Fiorentina won 4-1 at Genoa and Hellas Verona beat Empoli 1-0. Bologna vs AC Milan and Torino vs Cagliari are Monday night games, so you'll have to wait until the bonus podcast this week to hear those discussed.

To discuss it all, Conor Clancy hosts Euan Burns, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria.

Forget AC Milan, Sassuolo are going to win Serie A23 Nov 202001:10:39

It's Jeremie Boga's world and all of us, Zlatan Ibrahimovic aside, are just living in it. Sassuolo and AC Milan both impressed again to stay ahead of the rest in Serie A after eight rounds of fixtures.

Thankfully, Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski, and Vito Doria are here with the Forza Italian Football Podcast to talk through it all, from Ibrahimovic's time-defying brilliance to Sassuolo, Juventus, Inter, Atalanta, and the rest.

There was plenty to talk about as the international break was immediately forgotten, including Luis Alberto's criticism of Lazio's purchase of a private jet.

There was drama everywhere, so don't miss this week's pod.

Step aside Zlatan, it's Kessie's time to shine10 Nov 202001:05:38

Everyone drew in Serie A this weekend, with AC Milan, Sassuolo, Juventus, Atalanta, Lazio and Inter all picking up just one point, as six of the 10 games ended all square.

Napoli and Roma were able to capitalise on those around them dropping points, making the top half of the 2020/21 Serie A table look even more exciting than it had before Round 7.

While not much changed in terms of the standings, there were big games and there was plenty to talk about for Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria on the Forza Italian Football Podcast.

Sassuolo are storming Serie A, but nobody can touch AC Milan03 Nov 202001:03:24

Sassuolo kept up their charge on the 2020/21 Serie A season by extending their unbeaten start with a big win at Napoli in Round 6, but AC Milan stay top as they extended their unbeaten run to 24 games.

Juventus got back to winning ways, as did a heavily-rotated Atalanta, while Inter surprisingly dropped points at home to Parma.

The Forza Italian Football Podcast, thankfully, is here to talk about all of the calcio action from the weekend just gone. Kevin Pogorzelski, Vito Doria and our Rome-based correspondent Alasdair Mackenzie all joined host Conor Clancy on this week's show, which very nearly didn't make it to you.

Elsewhere, Lazio scored twice in stoppage time to steal a win at Torino, Sampdoria and Genoa played out a draw in the Derby della Lanterna, Bologna beat Cagliari and there was a whole lot to talk about.

Ibrahimovic owns the Milan Derby18 Oct 202001:16:14

It's 2020 but Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still bossing the Derby della Madonnina at 39 years old and after he fired AC Milan to their first victory over Inter in four years this weekend, the Forza Italian Football Podcast assembled to discuss it.

Conor Clancy had Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria by his side again to talk through an action-packed round that has seen 41 goals scored in the nine games played, with Hellas Verona still to host Genoa on Monday. Alasdair Mackenzie also joined on the line from the Stadio Olimpico where Roma beat Benevento.

Atalanta were thumped at Napoli, Lazio fell at Sampdoria and Juventus were held away at Crotone in three of the stranger results of the round.

COVID and clowns cause chaos in Serie A04 Oct 202001:16:06

Another week of Italian football has come and gone and, naturally, it was packed full of controversy.

There was even more fallout than usual in Round 3 as Juventus-Napoli became the game that never was, with the Partenopei stranded in Campania and now facing a possible one-point deduction and nobody really knowing what's going on.

Thankfully, though, the Forza Italian Football Podcast is here to talk through it all with Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria joining host Conor Clancy.

The guys discussed the chaos around the situation in Naples and Turin, heaped more praise on Atalanta, spoke about AC Milan, Lazio-Inter and everything else as well.

Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria joined host Conor Clancy to discuss Juventus' slip at Roma and Inter leaving it late to beat Fiorentina in a goal-filled game in Milan, as well as everything else to have happened.

Elsewhere, Napoli hit Genoa for six, Atalanta did what they've been doing for years and Lazio beat Cagliari in Serie A's worst-kit derby in Sardinia.

Serie A 2022/23 Season in review: Glory for Napoli, loads of finals, even more kits22 Jun 202301:13:24

The 2022/23 season of Italian football has (finally) come to a close and it is fair to say it has been an entertaining one. We had a fourth different Serie A winner in four years, which was Napoli with their first title in 33 years.

There was also an additional relegation playoff at the end of the season which was not expected, as well as an Italian team featuring in all three of the major UEFA competition finals. They may have all lost, but it's the taking part that really counts.

There were some incredible individual seasons for the likes of Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ivan Provedel, Federico Dimarco and many more. We discuss them in our individual and combined Team's of the Season as well as all of the action that went down over the past 10 months.

Conor Clancy is hosting what is our last free podcast until the 2023/34 season gets underway, which you can listen to here. He is joined by Kevin Pogozelski and Euan Burns.

Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria are back with the Forza Italian Football Podcast to talk through everything from the final matchday of the 2019/20 Serie A season.

We weren't sure we'd get to this point, but the season has now been concluded, Lecce join SPAL and Brescia in Serie B and the title was decided by just one point in the end... sort of.

A final round that could have been crazy was a bit of a damp squib in the end, but we're here to talk through it all anyway.

Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria are back with the Forza Italian Football Podcast to talk through everything from Round 37.

Conor gets emotional about Papu Gomez and Dejan Kulusevski, Vito struggles to hide his joy with Genoa's thumping at Sassuolo and Kev is uncharacteristically positive about Zlatan Ibrahimovic and AC Milan.

Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria got back together within minutes of the final whistle in Turin to pay homage to Juventus' ninth straight Scudetto.

Matchday 36 of Serie A did have nine other games of varying importance, which were all - almost - discussed.

Juventus can't blow the title now... can they?24 Jul 202001:04:23

There are just three games left in Serie A as Round 35 came to an end on Thursday evening and the title still hasn't been wrapped up.

Juventus' loss at Udinese and Inter's draw with Fiorentina means that the Old Lady, Atalanta or Inter can still win the Scudetto this year, with the gap now at six points between the leaders and La Dea in second.

Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria are back with the latest Forza Italian Football Podcast to talk through it all.

Genoa won the Derby della Lanterna to stay four points clear of Lecce even after they beat Brescia, while Parma finally won again as they hosted Napoli.

Nicolo Zaniolo showed his class with a fine goal against SPAL in the best of the rest and AC Milan's good form continued at Sassuolo.

The title is Juventus', Ric Flair meets Serie A and SPAL bid farewell21 Jul 202001:06:19

Juventus pulled within touching distance of the title and SPAL became the first side to have their relegation confirmed in a busy 34th round of Serie A action.

Thankfully, Conor Clancy, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria are back with the latest Forza Italian Football Podcast to talk through all that happened.

The bottom four all faced off in a huge round of fixtures which saw Genoa earn themselves some breathing room, while Juventus got exactly that at the top as well by beating Lazio after Atalanta and Inter dropped points.

There was some more madness elsewhere, too, from Gaston Ramirez's best Ric Flair impressions, Kalidou Koulibaly finding a way around the backpass rule by using his post and Leonardo Spinazzola conceding the most comical penalty you'll see as well as so much more.

Juventus stuttering, AC Milan rampant, Atalanta dominate the Lombardy Derby17 Jul 202000:43:50

There are just five games left in this Serie A season, though it remains to be seen if the Forza Italian Football Podcast will have enough energy to get over the line.

Just like Lazio, Conor Clancy and Kevin Pogorzelski are struggling to keep up with things since the restart, but Juventus' consistently underwhelming performances, AC Milan's reliable comebacks and Atalanta's goalscoring guarantee has made their lives considerably easier.

Maybe the title race isn't over after all, Lazio are on track to finish fourth in a two-horse race, Andrea Belotti has scored in seven straight games and there's even more interesting things going on that are almost impossible to keep up with.

But, in the absence of Vito Doria, Conor and Kev did their best.

Conor Clancy is fresh in from more late drama at Parma to speak with Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria about Atalanta's incredible showing at Juventus, Napoli 2-2 AC Milan, the latest example of why you should "always watch Sassuolo" and everything else.

Kev Pogorzelski is playing peacemaker between Conor Clancy and Vito Doria after the Derby del Podcast between Atalanta and Sampdoria, and from Juventus to Lazio and everything beneath them, there's more than enough to talk about.

AC Milan impressed again, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is getting carried away with things, Lazio players are biting others, Inter are collapsing and there's a whole lot more on top of that.

It's just Conor Clancy and Kev Pogorzelski this week, as Vito Doria was clearly too overwhelmed by Sampdoria winning a crucial six-pointer against Lecce to join.

The Champions League places appear to be wrapped up with Atalanta beating Napoli and Roma losing to Udinese, so the guys turned their attention to the bottom of the table for some relegation chat, though they did discuss the Giallorossi and the Nerazzurri too.

Before the curtain finally falls on this seemingly never-ending season, Spezia and Hellas Verona will have to do battle in a brand-new relegation playoff after both sides finished level on 31 points. That aside, the regular season has come to an end with everybody having played 38 games.

There wasn’t too much to resolve on the final matchday with the Champions League places already sealed and two of the three relegation places as well, but both Atalanta and AS Roma secured qualification for the Europa League with Juventus qualifying for the Europa Conference League.

Then there were some emotional farewells with Fabio Quagliarella bowing out as a Sampdoria player - and maybe as a professional footballer - in his home city at Napoli’s Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Up north, Zlatan Ibrahimovic hung up his boots at an emotional San Siro.

To chat through the Matchday 38 action - and with a season review pod to come - Kevin Pogorzelski joins Conor Clancy.

Serie A matches are coming thick and fast now that football has returned, but luckily the Forza Italian Football Podcast is here to attempt to talk you through it all.

With a schedule that's almost impossible to keep up with, Conor Clancy called in Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria to help him remember what happened in the round and a half of fixtures over the last five days.

Recording took place within minutes of Atalanta completing another incredible comeback against Lazio, as well as Roma's turnaround at home to Sampdoria on Wednesday evening.

The guys spoke through all of the games and how teams are looking now that they're back to action.

Italian football is back!14 Jun 202000:50:33

Italian football is back! So, naturally, the Forza Italian Football Podcast has returned as well to look back on the Coppa Italia semi-finals and forward to Serie A's return.

Conor Clancy is still here as host, with Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria helping him shake off his rustiness.

The guys talked through Juventus and Napoli reaching the final, at AC Milan and Inter's respective expense, and gave record-breaking Dries Mertens some praise.

Attention then turned to Serie A making a comeback after three months off, they reminded themselves of how Serie A looks, who is in charge where and even squeezed in some Mario Balotelli chat as well.

My Favourite Game: How Mihajlovic’s left foot began an unlikely love story21 Apr 202000:26:39

On the face of it, this was a bizarre time to start following the Roman club. Lazio had won their second-ever Scudetto the previous summer, as well as the Coppa Italia. They won the Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup a year before that. But by March 2001, they were nine points behind Serie A leaders Roma in third place, while their Champions League campaign was over before a ball had even been kicked in Yorkshire.

My Favourite Game: Mourinho masterclass downs Barcelona17 Apr 202000:36:49

Now regarded as one of the best club teams of all time, I wasn't exactly confident heading into the two-legged tie against Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and former Nerazzurri star Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The fact they were defending champions only added to my anxiety.

That's what made the 3-1 victory in the first leg all the more surprising, and put things into perspective: I was 90 minutes away from seeing Inter play in the Champions League final.

Little did I know that the return leg at the Camp Nou would be one of the most stressful viewing experiences of my life.

My Favourite Game: Goals galore in Reggio Emilia10 Apr 202000:27:14

Italian football has historically been known for placing importance on results over style but there has been an emergence of attack-minded coaches in recent years willing to buck the trend. Sampdoria under Marco Giampaolo and Sassuolo, who have been coached by Roberto De Zerbi since the summer of 2018, were a couple of Italy’s greatest entertainers in the 2010s, possessing the desire to attack as much as possible but were also vulnerable at the back.

My Favourite Game: The night Ribery sent AC Milan tumbling07 Apr 202000:16:43

On the 29th September, 2019 Franck Ribery rounded off a stunning 3-1 victory for Fiorentina at the Stadio San Siro and he rolled back the years to put AC Milan to the sword with a masterful performance. Ribery had just joined Fiorentina in August on a free transfer from German champions Bayern Munich after his contract had expired. The decision to sign the veteran attacker was met with scepticism from supporters of other clubs but, for Viola fans, it was huge.

My Favourite Game: The night Genoa shocked Europe28 Mar 202000:27:11

Walking out onto the playing turf of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, a banner covering the entire opposite stand read “We Are Genoa” and the noise generated by the capacity crowd appeared to grow louder-and-louder. Failing to lessen as it headed skyward. As the TV cameras cut to the line of Liverpool players completing the pre-match formalities, rather than looking stern faced and focused, there was a mix of trepidation and wonderment while surveying the vociferous home crowd.

My Favourite Game: A magical night in Dortmund25 Mar 202000:28:51

Up until 2006, I had come to expect disappointment with Italy, especially in light of the Calciopoli scandal that rocked Serie A. We had good players - who in hindsight were more than just good - but other countries could rely on names like Miroslav Klose, Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane and Fernando Torres.

All of these things made Italy's run to the World Cup semi-finals all the more surprising. The Germans stood in our way, and while we had always beat them at major tournaments up to that point, all signs pointed to that streak coming to an end.

My Favourite Game: When AC Milan fell in the fog at the feet of a teenager23 Mar 202000:27:22

On a foggy Sunday evening at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, Serie A debutants Sassuolo surprisingly defeated AC Milan 4-3 in January 2014 and it is best remembered for the individual brilliance of Italian starlet Domenico Berardi.

Juventus hit with 10-point deduction, Cremonese relegated24 May 202300:45:21

Matchday 36 was action packed for issues both on and off the field, with Juventus’ 10-point deduction overshadowing everything else to have taken place over the weekend, even with Cremonese officially suffering relegation from Serie A to immediately return to Serie B.

Juventus’ off-field issues might have played a part as they fell to a 4-1 hammering at Empoli, AC Milan thumped Sampdoria 5-1, Napoli beat Inter 3-1, Atalanta saw off Hellas Verona, and Lazio won at Udinese as well. AS Roma were unable to keep up with their fellow European hopefuls, drawing at home to Salernitana.

At the bottom, Lecce and Spezia played out a goalless draw that really didn’t suit either of them.

My Favourite Game: Bologna go gently into that good night20 Mar 202000:17:15

There are a million reasons that football matches might stay in your mind. Some of them are thrilling, unexpected affairs that lift your soul with their artistry and leave you on a high that takes days to leave you. In others, there is such beauty that it warms you on a human level with the knowledge that people are able to create such majesty, in the way of a symphony or a painting. There are other reasons, too, and they were all present at a packed Stadio Renato Dall’Ara in Bologna in the early summer of 2014.

My Favourite Game: When Roma's eternal king ruled over the Eternal City18 Mar 202000:28:05

The bragging rights of the Derby della Capitale are one of the most important given the passionate and fiercely-contested rivalry, and as such the meetings tend to be tight affairs. However, the match on March 10, 2002 stands out for the sheer dominance Roma enjoyed, as they romped to a stunning 5-1 victory over Lazio in one of the most memorable Serie A matches this century.

My Favourite Game: The Day a Jester Became a King16 Mar 202000:25:48

Sunday November 29, 1992 was the day that Paul Gascoigne, the jester of world football, became the king of Lazio as his late header earned the Aquile a 1-1 draw against bitter rivals Roma in the Derby della Capitale.

Forza Italian Football's Editor-in-Chief Conor Clancy is joined by writer Dan Blakemore to discuss his favourite game.

Over the next few weeks we'll be looking back at some of our favourite games from Italian football's rich history, and bringing the stories of them to you in the form of an article and a podcast.
