| Boldly Inclusive Leadership with Guest Minette Norman | 05 Oct 2023 | 00:39:26 | |
Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. In this week’s episode, Naomi Titleman is joined by special guest Minette Norman who is an author, consultant and former Silicon Valley executive.
Minette recently launched her second book, The Boldly Inclusive Leader. In the podcast she reflects on her career as a leader in technology firms and how badly prepared new leaders are to lead particularly when it comes to leading diverse and multi-cultural teams.
They talk about the importance of human-centric leadership and how multi-faceted it is. Leaders are human too and it’s important to acknowledge that leaders will make mistakes and need to learn from these mistakes. Human leadership is also about recognizing that nothing gets done without the people in our organizations so it’s critical to ensure the organization creates an environment where people can thrive.
The most important first step on a journey of human-centred leadership is self-awareness so we can understand ourselves and understand our emotions. Minette then talks through the behaviours inclusive leaders should demonstrate to be an inclusive leader.

| Flourishing at Work with Guest Julian Chapman | 14 Aug 2025 | 00:39:49 | |
This week we welcome Julian Chapman to the podcast to share his insights on flourishing at work and leadership. Julian is President of Forrest & Co. a Toronto based consulting company focused on helping to create great places to work that achieve the strategy of the organization. Julian shared that the Flourishing at Work Concept is part of a broader human flourishing movement aimed at addressing the impact of AI on humanity. He also shared the three key aspects to leadership:
As someone who worked many years in the military, Julian quoted an old adage from the Canadian military and across the Commonwealth: "Leadership is, know your people and promote their welfare." Julian emphasized this isn't about a welfare state, but rather about doing things that are good for people based on understanding what they need and want. This principlecascades through an organization from top to bottom as a foundation of good leadership. | The Downsides of Bossware | 30 Mar 2023 | 00:28:13
Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. Bossware, workplace spyware or tattleware is another one of those trends we’ve seen emerge in recent years. We share background to a Canadian case in January where an employee was ordered to pay a fine for time theft that was picked up through monitoring software. https://decisions.civilresolutionbc.ca/crt/crtd/en/item/523029/index.do While there are elements of monitoring that can be helpful when it comes to individual productivity, we express our concern about the evasiveness of this sort of technology and how it can be abused by companies. Our view is that the bigger challenge is around measuring productivity and we point to the research from Microsoft report and their term productivity paranoia (see below), but we do challenge ourselves to explore any benefits it can provide. Spoiler alert … there aren’t many and we’re fans of macromanagement! Here is a link to the Microsoft report on Productivity Paranoia https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work-is-just-work And to the idea of micromanagement https://www.fastcompany.com/90832818/how-to-be-a-macromanager-and-why-you-need-to Quick reminder Don’t forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight. They have an energizing conversation (filled with some fantastic metaphors) about hybrid work, the return to office and what has changed for leaders and organizations. She introduces us to a new term for leaders - performance permanence where they don’t believe their people are being productive – and encourages all leaders to think about defining performance outcomes more broadly. They dig deep into productive tension, healthy conflict based on insights from Liane’s 2019 book The Good Fight. They also talk about the importance of building trust through community when it comes to team effectiveness and the role HR can play in building productive conflict. Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. In this week’s episode, Naomi has the opportunity to chat with former future foHRward conference keynote speaker, Gary A. Bolles. Gary is author of "The Next Rules of Work", Chair for the Future of Work, Singularity University and Co-founder, eParachute.com. In this far-ranging conversation, Gary shares his perspective about trends or threats (he doesn’t like the term predictions!), what he calls the WorkNet (what we call the worker ecosystem), the important roles of leaders (or what he prefers to call the Team Guide) and shares some examples of organizations who are adopting these new ways of working. He also explores the impact of exponential change when it comes to changes like AI and how we should be thinking about it as a tool – not a partner or a work colleague – and he also has an interesting analogy for black swan events. | Career Cushioning | 16 Feb 2023 | 00:27:23
Introduction to career cushioning and the benefits of having a plan B Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. Another buzz phrase makes its way in to the work vernacular – career cushioning! We saw this one popping up in a few articles so thought it would be a good one to delve in to. Essentially it means having a plan B to help keep yourself employable in a turbulent employment market. Of course that has implications for companies who are working hard to hold on to their top talent … but as we conclude it seems a sensible strategy for individuals to take! In this week’s episode we’re joined by Ravin Jesuthasan – futurist, thought leader, author and Global Transformation Leader at Mercer. In this rich conversation with Naomi, Ravin shares insights from his most recent book Work Without Jobs where he challenges us to think differently about how we structure work and move away from a traditional one person, one position approach. In addition to sharing interesting case studies from DLH and Unilever, Ravin and Naomi talk about the four principles to deconstruct work, the value of taking a skills-based approach and how the expectations of leaders are changing. We hope you enjoy the podcast! You can find out more about Ravin and his work here! Quick reminder Don’t forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight. | Building the Worker Ecosystem | 26 Jan 2023 | 00:23:03
Building the Worker Ecosystem – formerly known as recruitment! Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. We all know how much the world of work has changed in recent years, but the way we attract talent has arguably seen the most disruption. We call this building the worker ecosystem at future foHRward. In this episode of foHRsight, Naomi and Mark chat about how the tight labour market and new innovations have changed the world of talent acquisition with emerging ways to tap into talent pools including gig workers, alumni and retirees. We advocate for a buy, build and bot (and borrow, which we didn't outwardly say but referred to with gig workers) talent strategy to create a more robust approach to talent management. Mark mentions a post about ChatGPT – you can find it here! Quick reminder Don’t forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight. Follow us on LinkedIn:

| Productivity and Prioritization | 12 Jan 2023 | 00:31:37 | |
Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. The start of the year is the time when many organizations are rolling out the priorities for their teams. In this week’s episode we make the case for thinking about prioritization in a broader sense beyond the top corporate goals. Many leaders don’t feel their teams are being productive (see Microsoft report below) and while this is contrary to the views of individuals, it does present an opportunity to focus on measuring outcomes. Taking the time to think about how you can simplify often complex tasks at work and streamline meetings can help people to prioritize their time and ultimately be more productive. As next week’s guest Gustavo Razzetti says “… busyness is a wicked problem.” A few extra resources: Microsoft Work Trend Index - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work-is-just-work How to say no in No-vember for a happier, healthier, more productive work life – from Naomi - http://collaborativity.ca/how-to-say-no-in-no-vember-for-a-happier-healthier-more-productive-work-life/ Quick reminder Don’t forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight.
