Send us your Florida questions!

We welcome Rick Kilby as The Florida Spectacular's new co-host, and he and Cathy talk about the first two Thanksgivings celebrated in North America, which – spoiler alert – both happened in Florida. Learn the short history of the French Huguenot Floridians who celebrated the first Thanksgiving on North American soil – in 1564. The second Thanksgiving, celebrated by the Spanish in 1565, takes us to St. Augustine, where there's plenty to discover outside the Spanish Quarter.

Episode 77: Save Florida - Don't Recycle and Ditch Single-Use Plastics07 Sep 202200:52:01

Send us your Florida questions!

In January, Cathy decided she'd get rid of single-use plastic in her home, RV, and at the newspaper she and her husband own – all by Dec. 31. Her travels through the best parts of Florida motivated this decision, because everywhere she went, she saw plastic litter.

She and Jon talk about the Florida road trip that cemented that decision, what she's doing to make earth-conscious swaps, and why she doesn't recycle. They also talk about which Florida beach town is fireworks-safe for people with PTSD, dogs, and wildlife, why Jon's seventh-grader has a case of existential angst about the environment, and how trash can reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

This week, Cathy and Jon talk about a pair of water shoes Cathy's worn for 21 years as she paddled, snorkeled, waded, swam, and hiked through Florida. (Her Teva protons have seen more of Florida than most Floridians.) They also talk about other essential Florida gear, places they use them, and read a letter from a fan.

🔒 Florida Keys Spectacular Episode 15: Florida Lobster: Poached, Poachers, and... Lobster Sex?18 Jul 202400:33:59

Subscriber-only episode

Send us your Florida questions!

Cathy and Brad talk about Florida lobster. Lobster season runs Aug. 6- Mar. 31, but there's more to this tasty crustacean than meets the antenna! Hear why Brad (and many other Keys residents) thinks the mini-season has gotten out of hand, why spiny lobsters are actually crayfish, and how they reproduce.

“You should have seen the crawfish in the mangrove roots along the shores. They were stacked up two feet – one on top of the other. I’ve had them weigh seven pounds. The whole shore would be red, two or three hundred feet. One time I caught 2,900 crawfish with a small net. My father had a contract with the railroad to supply crawfish to Key West. The last season we worked for them, we shipped 54,000 pounds even though the supply was depleted by that time. That was the only year we kept a record. We found most of them on the lee side of Key Largo, Rodriguez, and Tavernier – wherever there was a mangrove shore. Nothing much on Dove Key.” —Beauregard Albury, Florida Keys

Episode 66: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings & Gainesville08 Jun 202200:48:21

Send us your Florida questions!

This week we welcome Ryan Worthington, a Master Naturalist who celebrates Florida road trips on Instagram (@the_Florida_Excursionist). He gives a wonderful tour at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Park.

Jon, Cathy and Ryan talk about the Cross Creek and Gainesville area, and, as per usual, the conversation heads off for parts unknown, much like a decent Florida road trip. Listen in to their conversation about Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ struggles and triumphs, how to camp at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Park, and where in Florida you can hike to a now-shuttered segregated state park. Ryan has some travel spots for hikers, and of course, there’s plenty of Florida history packed in the episode, too.

We also talked about camping in and hiking at

His latest book (with coauthors Barbara Cruz and Jeff Houck) is called "The Cuban Sandwich: A History in Layers", due to be published by the University Press of Florida in September 2022.
