Buying bowhunting gear is no joke. Ever feel overwhelmed with the cost? Recently I had a listener reach out named Tim who asked if buying a used bow is ok. In this episode I talk about what to consider when buying a used bow.

Budget wise, buying used is great because of all the added costs that go along with a hunt. Be mindful and have a friend familiar with bows go with you when you buy it. If possible, meet at a range and get a chance to shoot the bow.

3 days after publishing my last episode, my dad passed away. He taught me this phrase ever since I was a kid. I've given this phrase a lot of thought lately and thought it'd be appropriate to tie in this invaluable mindset that my dad taught to me all these years and apply it to bowhunting.

Being the off season, what's a bowhunter to do? You can't just sit around and watch ATA recap videos to see all the latest bowhunting gear coming out, or can you? I learned so much on this hunt. And full disclosure, I took this elk with a rifle. So if you're a purist bowhunter, maybe this episode isn't for you. However, for new bowhunters, there is a ton of learnings I gained from this hunt that I share in this episode. Yes, 95% of the time I'm bowhunting but I saw this late season rifle elk hunt and had to go for it, which resulted in a kill and harvest. For me, I'm a pretty sucky elk hunter and so this hunt meant a ton to share it with my son and be able to bring home meat to fill the freezer. 

When we talk about being good at archery and being a good hunter, this hunt taught me to be a better hunter. And in the process, I was able to fill the freezer and share the experience with my son.

Within minutes, the hunt changed. My son joined me in the backcountry in the high elevation in Utah as I tried to arrow an elk. After unsuccessful stalks, a buck came in out of no where and my son's tag in his pocket was quickly punched. 

As a solo hunter, I was so glad my son joined me on this hunt and I may have turned a leaf of no longer hunting alone. For pics of this hunt, check out my Instagram. Shout out to listener Craig who dropped a supportive note on my DM's.

I swear my first few seasons were a bust because I didn't understand scent and wind. Don't make the same mistake I did, tune in and listen to how to use these towards your advantage. 

Scent can also be great for when you can smell an animal like elk. Without seeing them, they could be within a quarter mile just by smelling them. Then you can follow your nose and close the distance.
