#325 Change Management & The Complexity of Change with Stephen Carver
09 Sep 2024
01:29:43
STEPHEN CARVER B.Sc M.Sc C.Eng EurIng FIRM FAPM - is rated as one of the top 3 lecturers at one of Europe’s top MBA Business Schools. He has a reputation of taking complex management concepts such as Project, Programme and Crisis Management and being able to distil them down, into highly informative and fun lectures - often using “storytelling” techniques. His attitude is “if you haven’t done it – you shouldn’t be teaching it!”
He has lectured to the British armed forces pro bono for the last 20 years – and is rated as top lecturer on ACSC and ICSC. He has lectured at almost every UK military base including Shrivenham, Hereford, Conningsby, Devonport, Cosford, Uxbridge, Faslane, Falklands, Germany, Erbil and Valley. He recently shared a lively stage debate with Charles Haddon Cave at Shrivenham discussing ethical leadership.
Unusually, for an academic, he has actually spent most of his working life in real business. He started as an engineer in the offshore oil business and then worked his way up the corporate ladder at Virgin and then Halliburton reporting directly into the CEO. He still runs his own, highly successful, Project Management company working with organisations from Banks and Law firms to manufacturing and pharma.
Stephen is an unusual blend of Academic, Businessman and Teller of Tales. He has taught in almost every country in the World, and has appeared on National Radio and TV.

00:40:49
On 12 July 2009 at 00.38hrs Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service received a call to a fire in a public bar at 178 Dalry Road, Edinburgh.
The original seat of the fire was within the basement, in a room used as an office, with fire and smoke spreading upwards towards the flatted properties above. The initial firefighting tactical plan prioritised the rescue of residents from those flats and locating and extinguishing of the fire.
During the firefighting operations firefighter Ewan Williamson, while attempting to exit the ground floor, entered a room off the public bar area and became trapped due to the door becoming jammed.

#216 FAIR PAY, FIRE STRIKE's & Firefighter Safety with Leigh Hosy-Pickett
28 Feb 2023
00:51:35
After a meeting of the National Joint Council (NJC) on Wednesday 8 February, fire service employers came forward with a new offer of 7% on NJC-negotiated pay rates and CPD backdated to July 2022, and a further 5% from July 2023 for all Grey Book staff.
So what will we vote ? What are the factors to consider ? And what will this mean for the future pay rates ?
A ballot on the offer is now open and close on Monday 6 March so I caught up with Leigh to talk about the new pay offer, the way the firefighters are being portrayed in the media & some the events of recent months

Hillary Recruit 4 SAS Who Dares Wins
26 Feb 2023

What really happens on SAS Who Dares Wins, what do they cut out of the show & how hard was It really.
Time to catch up with my good friend Hillary AKA Recruit 4
In September 2202 myself & 19 others took part in SAS Who Dares Wins where an elite team of ex-special forces from the UK and USA recreate the special forces selection process - putting all us recruits through the ultimate test of their physical and psychological resilience.
These TV shows are edited and cut together to suite the fast paced demand of TV & in doing so rarely capture the true nature of person & their story. This podcast episode is part of a short mini-series recorded back in October 2022 when are the recruits returned back from the Vietnam Jungle and the full experiences where fresh in our heads and before the passage of time began to fade these memories.

#215 The Truth about lithium-ion batteries and the danger they pose with Professor Paul Christensen
25 Feb 2023
00:54:45
Current data shows that 1 out of every 10 million lithium-ion batteries fails, this can be for a variety of reasons but the result is often uncontrolled, highly destructive & often explosive.
These batteries are incredibly popular and in use all around us however, they degrade much faster than traditional batteries & when a lithium-ion battery fails it is costing lives and we are yet to fully understand why and more importantly how to fight this in the context of emergency response.
Professor Paul Christensen is a subject matter expert & Consultant on all aspects of lithium-ion battery safety including fire detection and suppression. He is Senior Advisor to the National Fire Chiefs Council & lead for continuing Professional Development on lithium-ion battery safety across the sector covering basic lithium-ion battery science and technology, thermal runaway and consequences (including case studies), additives & safety systems, detection and suppression of fire and explosion avoidance and mitigation.
