Throughout my life and career, mastering and fine tuning the art of communication was and still is always a focus. As I navigated many situations, I needed to get a better understanding with the words I was choosing, how I was saying things and how I was being perceived. Was I connecting with someone in a way that aided the communication or hindered it?  There’s so many things that come into play when this topic is brought up.  In this episode, I’m talking about Communication - an area where we as humans need to always be striving to develop better skills to communicate in a way that allows us to connect,  be understood and help understand others.

Having a mindset that allows us to find the opportunity in any challenge is important in every aspect of our life. Today on the podcast, we're going to focus on how we find that and keep ourselves in that space to be able to find opportunity no matter what is happening around us. The bottom line is that it definitely is something that starts with your approach and your mindset.

Even though we know that, we may sometimes forget how important it is to maintain that mindset… really check in to see how we're approaching things, and where our head is at. If we're not checking in with how we're thinking, whether we're thinking about things from an optimistic viewpoint, or we've slipped into negativity, it really can impact everything.  Not only how we approach things but also what we attract. Are we attracting positive things? Are we attracting negative things? It can sometimes be a struggle to keep yourself in that space.  In this episode, Maria is talking about exactly that and will share 3 Ways to Manage Your Mindset.

Making decisions in business always involves considering the cost of resources, whether that’s dollars or time. But far too often, when we are only thinking about the cost of doing something, it stops leaders from moving forward because they haven’t thought through the cost of NOT doing it.  That always leads to short-sighted decisions that can be costly, and cause us to miss an opportunity and lead to really negative outcomes. And things move so quickly today, that we have to be looking at the emerging trends that move into the norm and change business and life -- otherwise we might get left behind.  In this episode, Maria discusses how changing our mindset affects our ability to recognize trends and embrace a new and different idea that pushes us with innovation and to do things differently. Entrepreneurs who look at the disruption, pay attention to the fringe and emerging trends, look at changing conditions with the opportunity to do something new and embrace change to find a way to thrive, are the ones that end up finding the upside.

Have you ever thought about how leaders get into leadership?  Most are promoted into a managerial role or leadership role because they were good at their job, not because they had the skills or experience.  Isn't that crazy how any other field requires some experience or qualification at the entry point?   The most important skills for the job are overlooked and sadly, many times not even a focus to be developed.  The result?  Negative outcomes that impact businesses everyday.  In this episode, Maria discusses the cause and impact of this problem in leadership and how to escape it.  Leaders that recognize their need to gain the skills and experience are the ones that have the best outcomes, for themselves, the business and their people.

So…. you want to start a side hustle or a business. I know many of you have been thinking about this for a while. And I know that there is a lot of talk in the media, on social media, just in society in general right now about starting a side hustle or starting a business with the uncertainty that has been predicted. 

There are many people that are promoting this as something that is a good decision, and I don't disagree. However, I think it's a personal choice of whether you actually want to have a business, or have a nine to five and have a side hustle. Now obviously I'm an entrepreneur, so I support that idea as I've started my own business . 

Either way, however, you slice it, even if you ARE going to start a business, doing it while you have a nine to five is one of the most efficient and effective ways that you can do that.

There are so many people that have left the corporate game to start their own business - and I am one of them.  I find that the story of how that happens widely varies and there are so many off ramps or entry points that lead to owning a business. Why do people resist change? Whether it’s changing your behavior or hitting a goal what matters most is CONSISTENCY! More and more, we are hearing about ADHD and Executive Function challenges in Adults and how much it impacts an individual's life. Many high profile individuals, like Mel Robbins and Jenna Kutcher have openly discussed their own adult diagnoses and the impact they face. In the past, the focus has been more on children, but many people discovered during the pandemic when structure fell away they were struggling, some were led to find out why and discovered that they had ADHD and/or issues with Executive Function. That’s because the impact from these challenges are everyday life skills and this difference can really create difficulties for people without the right understanding and strategies.  So in today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I am continuing the conversation about all of that with my special guest, Annika Ahlstrom.  Annika is an Executive Function Coach who has deep experience working with children and families with ADHD and/or Executive Functioning challenges.
