From Admin to Paraplanner to Practice Manager - Paula Guedes Inspiring Journey in Financial Planning05 Sep 202400:44:01

What does it take to transition from an administrative role to a technical expert in financial planning? Join us as we talk with Paula Guedes, a dynamic practice lead at Foster Denovo. Paulas journey from Brazil to the UK, pursuing a master's in finance and economics, and working her way up from an entry-level position to a chartered paraplanner, is nothing short of inspiring. She shares how her analytical strengths and passion for financial planning have shaped her career, offering valuable insights for women aspiring to make their mark in this predominantly male-dominated profession.

Communication is the cornerstone of any successful financial planning team. In this episode, Paola elaborates on the crucial relationship between financial advisers and paraplanners, emphasising the benefits of fostering a team atmosphere. She reveals how paraplanners can enhance client confidence by simplifying complex financial information, and discusses the unique perspective non-native English speakers can bring to the table. Celebrating the achievements of women in finance, Paola advocates for greater diversity and inclusion, making a compelling case for why the profession needs more female leaders.

Paulas story of ambition and growth is both motivating and instructive. After significant personal milestones, such as the birth of her daughter, she returned to work with renewed vigor, tackling challenging qualifications and securing a promotion to chartered paraplanner. She highlights the importance of continuous learning, viewing failure as a stepping stone rather than a setback. By sharing her experiences at Foster Denovo, including the firm's impressive gender diversity and people-centric approach, Paula underscores the significance of personal growth and development within the company. Her journey serves as a testament to the power of ambition, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence in one's career.  if you are interested in joining Foster Denovo  - Click here

here's a couple of recommendations from James:

Vanguard paper mentions behavioral coaching, and that advisers need to recognise clients' emotions:

Emotions Revealed by Paul Ekman is a great read for those interested in emotions and behavior.

The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier is recommended for asking better questions. We spoke about why giving advice or asking questions are not optimal first responses, this book contains some good content about why. It's primarily for leaders, but with a few tweaks the questions are great to use with clients.

Talk Club- The Mens Mental Fitness Movement - Gavin Thorpe 07 Oct 202200:36:16

*World Mental Health Awareness Day Special *

This Week I'm joined by Gavin Thorpe one of the Co-Founders of Talk Club the men's mental fitness charity.   we take look into the excellent work they are doing.

Talk Club is our charity of choice at the financial planner life academies, 5% of the turnover of donated to Talk Club.

How are you? Out of ten? And when was the last time someone asked you that? It’s often difficult to gauge the way you feel when the career you work in moves at 110 miles per hour.

Opening up with others about our concerns, fears, and challenges can be a powerful thing, a tool that we (especially men) don’t use enough, but men do struggle to open up with each other, and this is often true within the heavily male-dominated financial planning profession.

Which got me thinking, what if there was a safe and secure place for men within the profession to connect and support each other?

Enter: Talk Club Financial Planner Life.

Join Talk Club Here

So, what Is Talk Club?

Talk Club is a behavior-changing movement aimed at getting men to talk more openly about their thoughts, feelings, worries, and day-to-day gripes (and all the positive things too!). it’s a secure mental health fitness community helping keep men mentally fit by giving them a friendly and private space to share and support others.

It’s a simple medicine that starts with asking – How are you? Out of 10?

Each session is structured as follows:

  1. The Check-in – How are you? Out of ten?
  2. Positives in our life (Gratitude)
  3. Mental fitness plans – What are we going to practice and implement this week?
  4. The Check-out – Leave feeling a release, has your number changed

Get Involved

This is not only a great opportunity for individuals to get involved, but for companies to think about their mental wellness in the workplace policy. A fantastic tool you can use to signpost to your male employees.
We are on a mission to create face-to-face and online Financial Planner Life Talk Clubs all over the UK, specifically for financial planning professionals experiencing similar challenges in their lives. If you’d like to become a group captain, join as an individual, or simply hear more about some options. Get in touch today. Let’s open the conversation and get people talking.

We welcome all who feel they can benefit from this community and all we ask is for a nominal donation of as little as £1 a week to help these services to help you and people like you, everywhere.

Jonathon Jay - Why I joined Hoxton Capital Managment as Managing Director of UK Financial Planning - With Your Host Sam Oakes12 Jul 202400:46:57

This week on the Financial Planner Life Podcast,  we welcome back Jonathon Jay who first appeared on the podcast 3.5 years ago and lots has changed since then!

This is a special episode for me because I get to announce Jonathon Jay joining Hoxton Capital Management as Director of UK Financial Planning.

This is the first episode in the series I'm calling Hoxton Life! What it's really like working for an International Financial Planning Company.

Join us as we explore Hoxton Capital Management's ambitious expansion plans in the UK and globally. Jonathan shares insights into their innovative technology, the Matrix CRM system, and comprehensive training pathways for aspiring financial planners.

Discover how Hoxton combines cutting-edge tech with talented professionals to disrupt the UK market and attract top-tier advisors. Plus, hear about our media strategy, with internal podcasts and YouTube channels designed to elevate Hoxton's brand visibility and establish it as a leading international powerhouse.

Engage with us for a compelling discussion on the future of financial planning and the exciting journey ahead with Jonathon Jay driving the UK business forward.

Jonathon also shares his journey from Investec to his entrepreneurial venture working alongside corporate finance, ultimately leading to his exciting new role at Hoxton. We'll uncover the immense value financial planners offer to clients preparing for significant life changes, emphasising the importance of early engagement and understanding their financial and emotional needs.

Jonathon and I also dive into creating life-centric financial plans that prioritise client dreams and goals, such as early retirement or extensive travel, rather than focusing solely on monetary gains.

We discuss how building deep relationships and understanding client aspirations can make clients feel valued and secure in their plans. By balancing technical knowledge with personal connection, financial advisors can support broader, life-enriching strategies that lead to both client satisfaction and commercial success. Learn how this approach can transform the financial planning experience, making it more meaningful and fulfilling for clients.

We also look at the emotional challenges new millionaires face after exiting their businesses, and how can financial planners help mitigate post-exit depression.
