From large sweeping orchestral arrangements down to the faintest most seemingly inaudible footstep, our team understands that care and thoughtfulness is important at every stage of production. This is also known as being tasteful!

Audio quality, format, deadlines, and deliverables are all second nature to us. With these technical specs resoundingly taken care of Pop Sound is able to focus on the ever so crucial sonic direction of the project; in the nuance of the voices, the textures of the sounds, the arrangement of the score, and the flavour of chip when we settle in to enjoy the final product.

Ep 110: 19 year old writer sells her first feature film screenplay! Jordan-Paige Sudduth12 Apr 202100:48:43
Jordan-Paige Sudduth is a 19 year old writer, actor, director, filmmaker, daily vlogger, and author. Born on April 13, 2001, she was born and raised in Georgia, left the state for a bit of time to attend college, and is now back in the great peach state.

She began gaining her interest in acting first at around age 8 after performing a small skit for an elementary school project. The next year, she joined her school’s drama club, and fell in love with the art when they performed a rendition of Cinderella, in which she played the Stepmother’s voice, a narrator, and part of the procession. The next year, in 5th grade, she played Centipede in the full length production of James and The Giant Peach, once again, at her elementary school.

In her first year of middle school, her grade level was not allowed to participate in the drama club, and from there, she began to develop her love of acting for film and television, and began to take classes at AllStars Performing Arts Academy, and performed, once again, in James and The Giant Peach, but this time out of school at the Dancing Goat Theatre. As she hit her 7th grade year, she left AllStars, and began taking acting for film and television classes at Creative Studios of Atlanta. At her middle school, she performed in theatre shows as Maria and a part of the ensemble in My Son Pinocchio Jr., and as Chaos in The Dream Thief later that year. Hitting her last year in middle school, Jordan was cast as the role of Dragon in Shrek Jr., and that’s where her love for singing seemed to kick in. Since then, she has begun taking voice lessons with Melissa Loggins at Music Authority, and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon.

As she made her way into high school, her passion for film and television acting had been shadowed by theatre, and she joined Troupe 5362, a now award winning high school theatre troupe. It was during her freshman year that she found she was longing for something more, and therefore, her first screenplay, CRACKED was written over the course of the school year. As January hit, she began casting the feature length film, and that summer (2016), the film was shot over a course of 23 days. It was released as a private screening in August, and has now ben released to YouTube. The film runs at an hour and 17 minutes, and it was her writing, and directorial debut, and has won an award for Best Student Film, and has been recognized at three festivals. From that film, she has also be nominated for Best Actress at the Widescreen Film & Music Video Festival.

Jordan continued to make films all throughout high school, and went to college in Vancouver, British Columbia to study Writing for Film, Television, and Games at Vancouver Film School in August of 2019. She has completed 20 film projects over all, and while she now focuses mostly on writing, she does plan on continuing to make films from time to time. In January of 2021, she started her own virtual YouTube talk show, Breaking Character, to showcase all different types of creatives in the industry.

Currently working on: Writing television pilots and features to be pitched.

Ep 106: "Believe that you are good" Geoff Boyle NSC, BSC Bert Hardy Technical Achievement11 Mar 202101:36:36
Geoff got his first camera, a Brownie 127, when he was 8. From then on his career was clear. He went through a range of cameras getting better every time.

In his own words

"I was trying to celebrate 30 years of shooting commercials by making a "favourite 10" video. I couldn't do it so there are 11 :-) Starting in 1985 a lot are from SD and uppressed but they seem to hold up pretty well.

I started as a stills assistant in fashion & advertising in 1970, moving into moving images in 1973. After shooting news, documentaries and music videos I made the move to commercials in 1985. I finally made the move to movies in 2005 after a couple of false starts :-)

I've always been excited about creating images and the technology to create those images. I'm still as excited about filming now as I was when I started. I also believe strongly in sharing knowledge and training, this is reflected in the Cinematography Mailing List which I established in 1996 and the amount of workshops that I teach. I have taught workshops in..New York, London, Bristol, Bucharest, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussells, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Munich, Adelaide, Sydney, Perth, Singapore, Auckland, Colombo, Hannover and Mumbai.

I've won awards from:-

SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) Eastman Gold medal

BKSTS (British Kinematograph, Sound & Television Society) appointed Fellow

BSC (British Society of Cinematographers) Bert Hardy Technical Achivement

ACS (Australian Cinematographers Society) honorary member

NSC (Netherlands Society of Cinematographers) full member

In November 2013 I was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of the West of England."

Ep 105: FRIENDS Costume Designer, Debra McQuire08 Mar 202100:40:55
Among Debra McGuire's many accomplishments as a FINE ARTIST, FASHION DESIGNER and COSTUME DESIGNER, she has been best known for her 10 year run on the hit show FRIENDS and for designing many of David Mamet's film and theatre projects including PHIL SPECTOR (starring Al Pacino and Helen Mirren), nominated for 11 Emmy's and in which she was nominated for BEST COSTUME DESIGN. Debra has also designed many of Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan's film and Television projects. Debra designed SONIC (The Hedgehog), starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey (Paramount Studios/Sega) which premiered in February 2020 to rave reviews and box office success! She recently began designing for Jennifer Aniston for THE MORNING SHOW and the upcoming FRIENDS reunion.

Passionate about the THEATRE, she began designing costumes for a dance theatre company in Paris in the early 80's. In 2007 she won the NAACP Award for Best Costume Design for ATLANTA, at the Geffen Playhouse and in 2006 she was nominated for an Ovation Award for Best Costume Design for BOSTON MARRIAGE, at the Geffen Playhouse. Summer 2016 she designed the original period musical, I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU (written by Arlene Sarner and Jerry Leichling, Directed by Kay Cole), at the Montalban Theatre in Los Angeles, which has been nominated for several OVATION awards.

Debra is primarily a fine artist with a career that began as a painter, working and teaching in her Bay Area studio. She became an instructor at Colleges and Universities in Northern California, a Jewelry and Accessories Designer in New York, Fashion Designer, Fashion Consultant, Couturier (with a store in Pacific Palisades, Ca. for 10 years) and Costume Designer. She has been speaking at Galleries and Art Colleges on the East Coast, most recently Pratt Institute, RI School of Design and Brown University: The Refinement of Process: Visual Journey of the Artist as Costume Designer. Recently back in the studio, she travels between her LA loft/studio and her Rhode Island home/studio.

Her creativity is rivaled only by her ability to multitask, a skill that has been honed through many years of hard work and dedication. "An artist with passion can create anything…a world 1000 years in the past or the future, an 1800's Western, a contemporary drama or comedy, action film…anything is possible. Creating a visual story that didn't exist a moment ago is about the miraculous Designer-Director relationship…understanding the vision and making it happen. However, without my loyal and dedicated crews, none of this would be possible!"

Ep 101: International Cinematographers Guild DOP, Robby Baumgartner01 Feb 202100:48:17
Robby Baumgartner began his film career 28 years ago in New York City. His interest in lighting inspired him to choose the unconventional route to DP via Gaffing.

This career path allowed him to light films and learn from some of the most talented DP’s in the business: Rodrigo Prieto, Chris Menges, Robert Elswit, Dante Spinotti, Darius Khondji, Janusz Kaminski, and Emmanuel Lubezki. Some of the films include: “8 Mile”, “25th Hour”, “21 Grams”, “Babel”, “Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”, and “There Will be Blood”.

In between Gaffing gigs he took every opportunity to DP or camera-operate on feature films, 2nd-unit photography, commercials, and shorts.

Then in 2008 “There Will be Blood” shot by Robert Elswit, won the Oscar for Best Cinematography; the highest honor for any DP/Gaffing team. That event was the impetus for Robby to stop gaffing and DP exclusively.

In 2009 Robby joined the International Cinematographers Guild as a DP. Since then he has gone on to shoot 2nd unit on both “Hunger Games” l and ll, “Water for Elephants”, and “Argo” amongst other films. For the last 5 years he has been concentrating on shooting main unit for films such as “The Guest”, “Blair Witch (2016)” and now “Blindspotting”, which has been selected for competition in the US Dramatic category at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

Ep 99: The Importance of Indigenous Films - Filmmaker Loretta S. Todd21 Jan 202100:41:06
Loretta Sarah Todd | Bio

Loretta Sarah Todd is a visionary leader in Indigenous media, considered a true artist with entrepreneurial energy and deep cultural knowledge. Her first dramatic feature, Monkey Beach, based on the iconic novel by Eden Robinson, recently launched to strong audience and critical response, screening at TIFF (Industry Selects), opening the Vancouver International Film Festival and sweeping the Drama awards at the American Indian and Red Nation Film Festivals in the USA, including Best Film and Best Director. With international awards adding up (Venice Film Awards, 7th Art International Film Festival), Monkey Beach was the #1 Canadian film for 4 weeks at Cineplex and Landmark Theatres.

Ms. Todd has directed over 100 projects including award-winning documentaries (Forgotten Warriors, Remembering Chief Dan George, People Go On), digital media and games (My Cree App, Coyote Quest) animation (25 short animations) and TV. Ms. Todd created, produced, wrote and directed children's series (Tansi! Nehiyawetan 1-3, Coyote’s Crazy Smart Science 1-3), sci-fi (Skye and Chang) and interactive media (Fierce Girls). She is in development with a new animated children's series called Nitanis & Skylar.

Her media work encompasses contributions to the development of Indigenous media, providing opportunities for Indigenous cast, crew and creative, building new spaces for Indigenous production and expression and writing influential scholarly essays on issues of appropriation, representation and Indigenous futurism. Ms. Todd created the Aboriginal Media Lab with the Chief Dan George Centre and Simon Fraser University and was instrumental in the formation of the Aboriginal Arts Centre at the Banff Centre.

Recently, she created the IM4 Media Lab, an Indigenous VR/AR/XR Lab, in collaboration with Emily Carr University of Art and Design, where she is the Creative Director.
Trailblazing in the development of immersive technologies, Ms. Todd is currently a Fellow to the Inaugural Indigenous Delegation to the Co-Creation Lab at MIT, sponsored by the Indigenous Screen Office. And she is on the Advisory Board to the ONX Studio, a NYC based immersive technology art lab sponsored by the Onassis Foundation and the NEW MUSEUM, plus she was recently invited to be on the board of the Kalediascope Immersive Fund. A respected speaker, she's presented at VIFFImmersed, The Global AR/VR Summit, Kidscreen, Museum of Modern Art – as well the Aboriginal International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, at the United Nations – to name a few.

Ms. Todd is an original. She ran away at 13, was homeless and became a teen mother – which changed her life. She went back to school and worked in bakeries, construction, restaurants – to stay off welfare and away from social workers who might take her daughter. Still she managed to become a writer, activist, entrepreneur and an award-winning filmmaker. She is a devotee of world cinema, sci-fi, obscure music, elegant fashion, forests, gardens and Paris – and is an instigator of fusion Indigenous cultural expression. She is also knowledgeable about her culture – creating and producing an award-winning children’s series that teaches kids to speak Cree, her father’s first language, as well as creating the first Cree language app.

Her films have screened at the Sundance Festival, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), American Indian Film Festival (San Francisco), Yamagata Film Festival, ImagineNative, and the Museum of Modern Art, to name just a few. She has received many prestigious honours and awards, including a Rockefeller Fellowship to New York University, attendance to the Sundance Scriptwriter’s Lab, Special Jury Citation (TIFF), Mayor's Award for Media Arts (City of Vancouver) and the recent Women of Excellence Award, from the United Nation's WEF Women's Economic Forum.

Ms. Todd is Cree/Metis, from St. Paul des Metis, White Fish Lake First Nation and Turtle Mountain Chippewa in North Dakota.

MONKEY BEACH

TAGLINE: Based on the novel by Eden Robinson

SYNOPSIS: Waking up in her East Van apartment, Lisa (Grace Dove) is served notice by her cousin’s ghost (Sera-Lys McArthur), "Your family needs you." Reunited with her Haisla kin in Kitimaat Village, she realizes that she’s meant to save her brother, Jimmy, (Joel Oulette) from a tragic fate she’s foreseen since childhood. Of course, there’s also the matter of contending with the mystical creatures lurking in the nearby woods. And so begins a captivating allegory about learning to coexist with both the ghosts that haunt us and spirits who might enlighten us.

In bringing Eden Robinson’s beloved novel to the screen, Loretta S. Todd offers us a modern epic underpinned by themes that have long defined heroic journeys. Todd’s first feature narrative unfolds through a thrilling array of temporal shifts and stylistic flourishes. A film about reconnection with the land, its denizens and the secrets it holds, Monkey Beach is also a testament to Indigenous women’s ability to not just endure trials but emerge from them empowered.

FILMS BY SUZAN BERAZA

MASSACRE RIVER: The Woman Without a Country
Pikilina is a Dominican-born woman of Haitian descent. Racial and political violence erupt when the country of her birth, the Dominican Republic, reverses its birthright citizenship law and she is left stateless, along with over 200,000 others.

Uranium Drive-In

Bag It
Try going a day without plastic. In this touching and often flat-out-funny film, we follow "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world.

New Day was initially formed because the women’s movement had arrived and a group of independent filmmakers couldn’t find distribution for their feminist films. New Day sustains the ideas that inspired its formation in 1971 - collaboration, hope and social change.

“We met at the 1971 Flaherty Seminar, where some of our films were programmed,” recalled founding member Amalie Rothschild. “I was in production with It Happens to Us. I'd been trying to get distribution for Woo Who? May Wilson. I'd take it to non-theatrical distribution companies and they'd say 'It's wonderful, dear, we really like it. But there's no audience...’ ”

Founding members Julia Reichert and Jim Klein had already started self-distributing their film, Growing Up Female.

"The whole idea of distribution," explained Julia Reichert, "was to help the women's movement grow. Films could do that, they could get the ideas out. We could watch the women's movement spread across the country just by who was ordering our films. First it was Cambridge and Berkeley. I remember the first showing in the deep South."

Soon, a fourth member joined the three: "When I first met them," Liane Brandon explains, "I'd been inundated with requests to show Anything You Want To Be. I'd been running back and forth to the Post Office, making myself crazy. Other distributors wanted my film, but the most they would offer was a two-year contract, as they were sure the women's movement wouldn't last any longer than that. Because I'd been active in women's groups since 1969, I knew there was a huge demand, but most distributors didn't, so they offered bad deals, or they wanted to ghettoize the films. When I first talked with Jim and Julia and Amalie, I thought 'Ah-hah! Someone else who's experiencing the same things I am.'

Much has changed in media distribution since 1971 when the early members were selling 16 mm film prints! But the commitment to quality content and cutting edge distribution remains.

Eyes also screened at the Amerian Visionalry Arts Museum as part of their year-long exhibition "The Art of Story Telling".

Hope was honoured to have the Kent Film Festival name “The Hope Award for Outstanding Work in Documentary Filmmaking” after her and her work. Eyes sold to Moviola, The Short Film Channel.

Leslie produced the feature film Lie Exposed, directed by Jerry Ciccoritti, based on Jeff Kober’s play Pornography. Lie Exposed was recently sold to Mongrel Media for theatrical distribution and Crave for Canadian broadcast, as well as Indican Pictures for US theatrical and international distribution. Leslie also directed and executive produced the short film Buried Treasure, which won the Rome International Film Festival as Best Narrative Short.

She is attached to direct the J-Horror feature, Blood Wish, the comedy thriller mash up Ding Dong Ditch and the psychological thriller, Snow Man, based on best-selling author Carolyn Chute’s acclaimed novel. Leslie will direct the pilot for X-treme Medicine, a docu-reality series she co-created.

For the theater, Leslie directed and co-created with Roberto Campanella F-Lying: A Fellini Cabaret for SoulPepper and ProArte Danza as part of The Global Cabaret Festival. Previous directing work includes development of new works for the stage and a re-examination of the classics for The Wilton Project - a theatre company she founded and ran for 10 years as Artistic Director with Charlie Stratton.

Ep 86: President Obama's Principal Videographer at the White House - Filmmaker Hope Hall31 Oct 202000:46:41
Hope Hall is a documentary filmmaker, cinematographer, and photographer. Her short films have been selected for over 40 film festivals worldwide and have received numerous awards, including at Sundance. She has a BA from UC Berkeley and an MA from Stanford, and is a proud graduate of the Independent Studio Program at the Whitney Museum.

From May 2011 to January 2017, she was President Obama's Principal Videographer at the White House in the Office of Digital Strategy, with both the position and the office being a creation of this President. After working on "By the People" by Amy Rice and Alicia Sams, which followed then-Senator Obama's trajectory into candidacy, she joined the '08 campaign's now legendary New Media team as a staff filmmaker, telling the story from the campaign trail and making over 40 videos, and then the Presidential Transition Team to help draft the infrastructure for the first new media President. Before that, she was a freelance documentary cinematographer for independent documentary features, music videos, and television. Her personal work has taken her to artist residencies all around the world, and she had her first solo exhibition of video and photography in Trondheim, Norway in 2010.

After her last day on the best job ever, she created a sabbatical by organizing a speaking tour, which took her everywhere from a surprisingly raucous hospice wing in Marlborough, NZ, to an unsurprisingly inspirational time with Google Brand Studio, & 18 months' worth of stops in between. While going lateral in that epic chapter, she embarked on a personal project, ‘Visit the Visionaries,’ tracking down inspirational people at the intersection of art, social justice & tech. Soon thereafter, her freelance life as a documentary cinematographer & filmmaker ramped back up, with projects ranging from independent features ('The Fight') to episodic tv ('And She Could Be Next,' 'Current Revolution,') to campaign videos (FWD.US & unnamed others). She also contributed a chapter for "West Wingers," released September 2018. Then, for 14 magical months, she had the best job ever 2.0, as Senior Advisor for Video & Senior Road Videographer for Elizabeth Warren 2020! Now, she is processing, and caring for her community as much as humanly possible.

Awards and recognition

She is the recipient of honorable mentions at the Sundance, Louisville, Humboldt, and Black Maria film festivals in the short documentary category, and was selected for a year-long independent study fellowship at the Whitney Museum.

Education

She has a Master's degree in communication from Stanford University in Documentary Film and Video, and a Bachelor's from University of California, Berkeley in History and French. She spent her Junior year of undergrad in Paris at the Institute d'Etudes Critiques, studying Philosophy, Critical Studies, Film Theory and Structuralism at the University of Paris III & IV.

Cinematography work

Her cinematography work can be seen in dozens of independent feature documentaries, including three years of work on Beyond Conviction, a feature documentary on mediation between victim and perpetrator in Pennsylvania prisons. Her work is also in various TV productions: Bravo's Tabloid Wars, VH-1's Live @ VH-1 and Little Beauties, and MTV's Unplugged, Overdrive and First Year, MTV's first feature documentary, following three young people in their first year of something life-changing, including entrepreneur Kenny Lao's opening of Rickshaw Dumpling Bar. She is the camerawork and co-director behind the New York contributions to Paris' Un Concert a Emporter/Blogotheque/Takeaway Shows series, field recordings of bands performing in unlikely spaces, all shot in one take, called "One Take New York."

She directed multi-channel installation videos for the Guggenheim Museum's Art of the Motorcycle exhibition in Las Vegas, and is the proud mentee of -- and sometimes collaborator with -- designer Wendall K. Harrington, whose historic and ground-breaking work spans jaw-dropping scope, but who let her contribute to the memorable projection design for the broadway production of Eve Ensler's The Good Body.

Ep 202: Safety Reform Urged by Emmy-Nominated Producer24 Jun 202400:43:45
In this episode, we delve into the critical topic of production safety in film and TV with our esteemed guest, Paul Epstein. Paul is an Emmy-nominated executive producer renowned for his work across scripted, factual, and news TV for networks like MSNBC, Discovery, and NatGeo. With approximately 100 credits to his name, Paul's career highlights include producing iconic shows such as The Apprentice USA and Westerns like Into the Wild Frontier. Key Discussion Points:
  • Production Oversight: Currently, the oversight of film and TV productions primarily relies on state and local filming permits, with no centralized governing body ensuring safety standards.
  • Industry Challenges: On non-union productions, there is often a lack of third-party oversight for critical safety roles such as armorer or animal wrangler, leaving safety protocols vulnerable to oversight by inexperienced directors or producers.
  • Call for Reform: Paul advocates for the establishment of state-level governing bodies to enforce safety standards uniformly across all productions, preventing tragedies like the one seen on the set of Rust.
Guest Introduction: Paul Epstein joins us to discuss his career journey, insights into producing on a tight budget, intellectual property in the industry, and his experiences with docudramas. From showrunner to executive producer and beyond, Paul offers a comprehensive view of production safety and its critical importance in the wake of recent industry tragedies.

Educational Value of This Episode:
  • Understanding Production Oversight: Learn about the current lack of centralized governing bodies overseeing film and TV productions, relying instead on state and local permits.
  • Challenges in Non-Union Productions: Explore the risks associated with non-union productions, where critical safety roles may lack third-party oversight, potentially compromising crew safety.
  • Importance of Establishing Safety Standards: Discover why Paul advocates for the establishment of state-level governing bodies to enforce consistent safety protocols across all productions, aiming to prevent tragedies like those seen on sets such as Rust.

Ep 84: From the Film Riot film "Tell" actor, writer, and producer Todd Bruno!17 Oct 202000:45:42
SO-FLO ROOTS
Todd was born in Hollywood, Florida and, although he excelled in sports, the craft of acting came most naturally to him. When he wasn't playing baseball, football or studying martial arts, he and his friends would re-enact scenes from their favorite movies (Jaws and Willy Wonka were frequent choices). In his senior year of high school, Todd was drafted from the football team into the Theater program, starring in the school play and winning district improv competitions.

He entered Vanderbilt University on the pre-law track, but soon became more interested in the school's theater program, which included one of the best-equipped true black box theaters in the country. He performed in 13 plays at Vandy, and graduated with a hunger to learn more about acting.

SEEKING CHOPS
A year after graduating college, Todd headed to New York to attend The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater. The Playhouse had been rated the #1 Acting Program in the U.S. by the Cambridge University Press, and Sanford Meisner's program had the reputation of being one of the toughest in the country. Only 75 students were accepted into the program; and of those, just 24 were invited back to complete the second year. Todd figured, if he could make it there, he could make it anywhere... but did he have the chops? The answer came quickly. At the end of his first year at the Playhouse, Todd was offered a role in the Second-Year Production - the only first-year student to be given such an honor. He was invited back to complete the second year, and he's proud to wear badge of a Neighborhood Playhouse Graduate!

CHANGE OF LOCATION
After graduating from the Playhouse, Todd moved to Los Angeles with some friends from school, and began trying to navigate the entertainment industry. Just as he was beginning to see some success in L.A., Todd and his family experienced a terrible loss: his brother was killed in a car accident, and Todd moved back to Florida to be with his family. Determined to make the best of his new situation, he explored the film industry in Florida and quickly hooked up with Ryan Connolly, founder of Triune Films and creator of the Film Riot web series. Together, they have made several films and sketches, and their relationship continues to grow.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
Todd has become one of the most sought-after actors and producers in the low-budget indie film industry. He has starred in and produced film projects across the country in Florida, Georgia, Texas, New Jersey, Tennessee and California. His films can now be seen on Amazon, Netflix, OnDemand, Redbox and in 13 countries around the world.

Ep 78: Chadwick Boseman - Gone But Not Forgotten. Howard University 2018 Commencement Speech.29 Aug 202000:35:52
Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Black icons Jackie Robinson and James Brown before finding fame as the regal Black Panther in the Marvel cinematic universe, died Friday of cancer, his representative said. He was 43.

Boseman died at his home in the Los Angeles area with his wife and family by his side, his publicist Nicki Fioravante told The Associated Press.

Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, his family said in a statement.

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much," his family said in the statement.

"From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more — all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honour of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther."

Boseman had not spoken publicly about his diagnosis. He is survived by his wife and a parent and had no children, Fioravante said.

Born in South Carolina, Boseman graduated from Howard University and had small roles in television before his first star turn in 2013. His striking portrayal of the stoic baseball star Robinson opposite Harrison Ford in 2013's 42 drew attention in Hollywood.

Howard University alumnus Chadwick Boseman provides words of inspiration to the Class of 2018 during Howard University's 150th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12 in Washington, D.C.

Ep 76: The Sleepless - Michael DiBiasio (Writer and Director)20 Aug 202001:11:17
The Sleepless - Michael DiBiasio (Writer and Director)

The Sleepless is Michael’s second feature film. His first, The Videoblogs, screened nationally in 2016 and is currently available on VOD in multiple countries. His best friends are his wife, his dog and whatever film he is working on at the time -- which he believes is an entirely normal, healthy, and appropriate way to live. Michael is a graduate of Columbia University.

THE QUICK GIST…
Chronic insomniacs Zach and Sophia wander the pre-dawn streets of New York City on an impromptu first date.

THE LONGER STORY
Sophia can’t sleep. Neither can Zach. Both have gotten far too used to it.

When the pair meet each other randomly at 3AM, in the only spot in their New York neighborhood open for coffee, sparks don’t necessarily fly. But with a gentle nudge from bodega owner Samir, and with nothing better to do that they aren’t already bored with, Zach and Sophia decide to amble together through the pre-dawn hours for a while, until she has to leave for her breakfast shift.

Sophia is guarded, Zach appears weary - and yet each seems to instantly connect to the other, as their wandering conversation touches upon on such resonant topics as mental health, addiction, gender dynamics, and the nonsense choices people make when bringing items to a desert island

Will there be another date, or will their respective hangups sink the possibility for romance?

The morning will have its say.

THE COMPLETE HISTORY
“I couldn’t sleep for a year. Insomnia had always been a problem for me,

but never one that lasted more than a couple of days at once.

This time, I had to seek help. Now, I sleep.

Most of the time.

And yet I often wake up very early, having slept five or six hours.

It’s peaceful, most of the time. It can also feel lonely. Alienating.

One day I was up before 4AM and needed coffee and didn’t have any. I sought out the closest place where I could find some. Just that week, I had also been studying low-light digital photography, and what was now capable with some ingenuity and willingness.

Then I emerged into the morning for that caffeine, and felt my neighborhood slowly -- very slowly -- stirring around me, and the idea came to me.

What if two people met under these circumstances? The predawn hours can be so raw, and yet so simple. What if...such a pair also took a chance on each other? And what if I chose a low-light camera and some fine actors and took a chance on this idea?

What came of all this is The Sleepless, a meditative, funny exploration of one of those odd spaces in life, inhabited as such by our two insomniacs, Zach and Sophia. We’re assembling an amazing team to make this film, and I’m so excited to bring it to life.”
