Red Tails (2012) ft. Matt Bone 26 Apr 202301:24:43

Platoon Leader (1988)15 Feb 202300:57:56

'Platoon Leader' is a Cannon Films production that attempted to cash in on the glut of 80s Vietnam War films that saw films like Platoon (1986), Full Metal Jacket (1987), and Hamburger Hill (1987) flourish. Directed by Aaron Norris 'Platoon Leader' features the skilled cinematography of Arthur Wooster and a strong cast of TV actors while Micheal Dudikoff plays the lead, LT. Knight, who is sent to a remote firebase to whip up a jaded and rag-tag bunch of G.I.s protecting a pro-American Vietnamese village.

Does the film hit the heights of the films it tries to emulate or should this film remain in the back catalog of bad mockbuster cash-ins?  Join us to find out.

This week we look at the John Milius epic tale of diplomacy versus military intervention in the early 1900s as Sean Connery's Raisui kidnaps an American citizen, will the troops be called in or will politics save the day?

The Wind and Lion is in the style of a 40s/50s epic with great turns from Connery, Bergen, and Brian Kieth as an uncanny Roosevelt lookalike in Milius's second feature.

Pegasus Bridge Screenplay with Director Lance Nielsen14 Dec 202201:33:36

We're pleased to be joined by award winning playwright and filmmaker Lance Nielsen. Lance was the driving force behind Pegasus Bridge, a film about Operation Coup De Main/Deadstick during D-Day. Sadly, the funding for Lance's ambitious film didn't materialise and the Covid-19 Pandemic halted production. Thankfully, Lance has now published the film's screenplay along with an introduction which tells the story of his attempts to produce the film and detailed production notes which explain how the film would have been produced originally. In this special episode Lance tells us all about the impetus for the film, the how he spearheaded production, spoke to surviving veterans and crafted an engaging and historically accurate script for the film.

We have said many times that we would love to see a film made about the daring operation to capture Pegasus Bridge and having read Lance's beautifully crafted and thoroughly researched screenplay we hope he gets the chance again in the future to make Pegasus Bridge. You can order a copy of the screenplay here, it is also available in the US here. You can also check out Lance's Outcast Creatives website here.

This week we examine a war film with a difference. 2019's 'World War Four' is an independent film from New Zealand which uses a vast amount of public domain military footage and scenes filmed with a small cast to craft a narrative that explores how World War Four begins. With nods to real world conflict and hot spots filmmaker AK Strom crafts a film which has an interesting place in the war film genre.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)19 Oct 202200:53:05

This week we cover our first Disney film with 1971's Bedknobs and Broomsticks. The late Angela Lansbury stars in this fantasy-war film set in the August of 1940. Three cockney evacuees are transported into a world of magic by Egalentine Price, an apprentice witch who wants to use her magic to aid the war effort.

This film has possibly the best depiction of the make up of the British and Commonwealth military during the war in the Portobello Road sequence and its representation of the Home Guard isn't bad either! Join the boys as they revisit this childhood classic.

Show and Tell #8 - The Undeclared War & Tour of Duty12 Oct 202200:28:48

Our show-and-tell format is back, and this week we talk TV with Channel 4's recent cyber-warfare drama 'The Undeclared War' and 'Tour of Duty' from CBS in 1987. Matt talks through the highlights of Peter Kominsky's drama that pits Simon Pegg as the head of GCHQ as they attempt to stop a cyber attack on the UK. Robbie gives his view on the first few episodes of the Vietnam war series 'Tour of Duty' which stars Terrance Knox as Staff Sgt 'Zeke' Anderson as he turns his raw recruits into a fighting force in 'nam in 1968.

There's even time to have a laugh at war movie food puns, put forward by the FoF Faithful!

The Bridge at Remagen (1969) with Peter Caddick-Adams05 Oct 202201:14:12

We welcome back Historian Peter Caddick-Adams back to show to cover 1969s 'The Bridge at Remagen' that pits George Segal against Robert Vaughn as they battle for the bridge! Directed by John Guillermin and produced by David L. Wolper, the production of the film is just as eventful as the action on screen as the filming was interrupted by the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.

A war movie in the vein of Kelly's Heroes and other late 60s American war films, Bridge at Remagen goes against the gun-ho war films of the 50s and shows 1945 in a far more accurate way. Both commanders are at breaking point as well as the men below them. Peter also brings his extensive knowledge of the battle to the show and even regales us with Bridge Demolition tips from his time in the British Army!

Windtalkers (2002)21 Sep 202201:19:42

This week we cover John Woo's 'Windtalkers' the big budget MGM-backed blockbuster that famously flopped at the box office being panned by critics at the time of release in 2002.

Starring Nic Cage and Christian Slater as USMC sergeants tasked with looking after Navajo Codetalkers played by Adam Beach and Roger Willie, during the battle of Saipan in 1944. Despite its huge scale and attention to detail, the film fails to successfully tell the story of the bravery and sacrifice of the Navajo Codetalkers.

Wolves of War (2022)14 Sep 202200:43:53

This week we take a look at 'Wolves of War' a new British war film starring Ed Westwick, Matt Willis & Rupert Graves. The plot sees a crack Commando team sent behind German lines in 1945 to rescue a nuclear scientist from captivity. Featuring impressive set pieces for a film of its size and some great performances from the cast.

The film harkens back to the Commando bookesque B-Movies of the 1950s/60s. We were lucky enough to receive an early copy of the film from Signature Entertainment so we could give you our thoughts in the week of the film's DVD release.

The Rebels of PT-218 (2021)31 Aug 202201:04:06

This week we cover 'The Rebels of PT-218' from the infamous 'Asylum' Film studio known for their mockbusters and cult b-movies. The film charts the tale of a US Liberty ship tasked with taking on a German gun battery holding up the allied invasion of Italy in 1943, yes you read that right.

Pulling from recent hits such as 'Greyhound' and other memorable naval films such as 'The Caine Mutiny' PT-218 attempts to hit the same highs as its peers but just seem so to fall flat on every front.

We Have Ways Fest Wind-down 202227 Jul 202200:35:27

We we're thrilled to be invited back to We Have Ways of Making You Talk's festival to put on our FoF War Movie Quiz. It was great to see old friends and new faces and speak to lots of FoF listeners.

The festival had some amazing speakers and some exceptionally cool kit on display - everything from a Matilda I to an early M3 Lee tank which had been used as a range target! In this episode we not only recap some of our favourite parts of the weekend but also hear from historians and some FoF listeners as we asked everyone: Who is your favourite war movie character? We had some great answers!

Apologies for some of the wind noise, it was a gusty day!

First to Fight (1967)19 Mar 202500:52:18

First to Fight (1967) is loosely based on the wartime life of Medal of Honour recipient John Basilone. The Warner Bros. feature also stars the late Gene Hackman in an early, scene-stealing role. But does the film hit the mark in terms of production value and plot? With a return of 'Robbie's Allegory Attack' and a rare appearance of the 'Trope Tally', the boys don their HBTs as they delve into this USMC-centric feature...
