| 268 // Does your home feel a bit boring and generic? 5 EASY ways to add personality to your home this weekend | 30 Aug 2024 | 00:23:45 | |
Hey friend! Does your home feel a bit boring and generic? Are you tired of living in the all white, gray, and beige that was trending for so long on Instagram? Are you ready to add a little personality and character to your home, but you don't exactly know where to start? In today's episode I'm sharing 5 ways to add a bit of personality and character to your home, that won't have you taking out a second mortgage, knocking out walls or changing every paint color on your walls! 1. Add pattern: swapping out solid colored items (curtains, pillows, area rugs, throw blankets) for something with pattern can instantly add personality where the solid was lacking. Scared of pattern mixing? Try combining one geometric pattern and one fluid pattern (like a floral). Keep a common color between the two and you're set! 2. Add color: this may seem like an easy fix, but it's even easier when you think of adding color in small ways (pillows, artwork, curtains, books, etc). Painting small pieces of furniture (or big ones) can instantly change the look of your room without the commitment of painting your walls. 3. Add whimsical art: swap out big box store art (canvas, triptychs, farmhouse word art) for pieces that are a bit out of the box. When those pieces are directly connected to a passion, a hobby, a family story - you are instantly creating a meaningful touch with your decorating. Examples include: a gallery wall of vintage tennis rackets, a collection of busts, glass jars with baseballs inside. My favorite places to source art that has more personality than art found at box stores are: vintage and antique markets, flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, Etsy. 4. Use common objects as decor: if you apply the rule 'anything that is out and visible is art' to your decorating, you can begin to see how normal everyday items can be elevated. Take for example a simple bathroom garbage can. Use an urn, a ceramic plant pot - anything other than a plastic garbage bin and you instantly elevate the space. 5. Incorporate vintage & antique items: mixing old & new is one of the most beautiful ways you can decorate a home. It instantly looks like it is oozing with personality, character and charm. Why? Those vintage pieces have lived another life and often come a little worn. How do you mix and match well? Try choosing a ratio to stick to - 1/3 vintage pieces to 2/3 new. This sets the parameters for how much of a good thing you decorate your home with. BONUS: have fun! Experiment! Play! There are no rules that say you have to decorate your home once and live with it for 50 years. If it feels tired and boring to you now...shake it up a bit by using one or more of these 5 tips.

| 267 // Feeling stuck decorating your open concept home? 3 tips to keep it cohesive | 23 Aug 2024 | 00:28:26 | |
Hey friend! Does the idea of a home with an open concept sound nice until it comes time to decorating?
Open concepts sound nice, but how do you create a home that looks curated, nuanced and cohesive when it's all essentially one big room? And how do you do that without just getting matching everything? In this podcast I'm sharing three ways you can unify your space intentionally without being matchy-matchy. 1. Focus on the foundation: The foundation of your home is the floor and walls. Walls include window treatments. Keeping base colors the same (i.e. in area rugs and curtains), choosing a color palette and using it throughout the open concept and using the same curtain rods, shades, etc. all help create cohesiveness. 2. Repeat MACRO and MICRO design elements: Large design elements like wood tones, metals, colors, textures are easy to repeat. When you master that, take it a step further by focusing on the micro design elements - the more subtle = the more nuanced. The more nuanced = the more elevated. 3. Look for the outliers: Try finding the things that no longer belong and remediate them by removing them or intentionally adding additional items to make the outlier fit in.
Want a training like this where you can SEE what I'm teaching? Come to the workshop: 3 Steps to Creating a Home you Can't Stop Gushing About Tues & Wed, September 17 - 18 9am PST | 10am MT | 11am CT | 12pm ET Register: https://bit.ly/fallhomeworkshop

Summer Savings Series:
Shopping at Thrift Stores pt. 2
10 (+6 more) things I ALWAYS look for!
In today's episode we are wrapping up our series on how to effectively and efficiently shop SUCCESSFULLY at thrift stores. Why do some people always seem to find the good stuff? Because they have a system...go back and listen to Episode 257 so you can learn 7 tips for shopping successfully.
Today I'm sharing 16 things I ALWAYS look for. They are part of my aesthetic and when I know what design elements I gravitate to, that I like decorating my home with, I can pin point them easier (using my 7 tips from last week) and be more successful at curating home decor items on the cheap.
Curating your home decor items at thrift stores is a wonderful way to find items that are more personal and less generic than you'd find at a big box store. KNOWING WHAT TO LOOK FOR is a process, but one worth learning so you can create a carefully curated home.

| 165 // Paying attention to this DETAIL when decorating your home will make it SO much easier!! | 18 May 2023 | 00:24:02 | |
Do you ever wonder...where do you START when you want to decorate your home or re-fresh a single room?
Starting BIG with a purchase could possibly be the worst thing you could do as you begin re-designing your home. So, put away your credit card and grab a notebook and a pen because you'll want to pay attention to the DETAILS. Learning your design style is not just an important step. It's THE MOST IMPORTANT first step, so what details do you pay attention to? All of them! Your style is more nuanced than the global terms that are tossed around left and right. Your style is more YOU than it is Farmhouse. It's more YOU than it is Boho. It's more YOU than it is Traditional. Cottage. Country. Industrial. Fill in the BIG global design style. Once you understand what your style is, you have the freedom to mix and match. Do you like a little Cottage and a little Industrial, but wonder how to blend the two? Looking at the fine details of the design elements you gravitate toward will help! Learn how to understand and identify your unique design aesthetic by taking my mini course. I walk you through step by step how to unlock and identify YOUR style so you can shop with confidence and re-fresh rooms with ease! This course is only available twice a year when THE VAULT opens. To have access to THE VAULT, send an email to: hello@figandfarmathome.com THE VAULT is open May 19th - May 26th. | 159 // Want to spend ZERO dollars, but have a whole new look in your home? Learn to shop your home with confidence! | 06 Apr 2023 | 00:20:51
Has your couch been sitting in the exact same position for years?
Getting a new couch may not be the solution to your 'my room feels stuck' woes (though in some cases it most definitely is). Using what you already have, but in new ways, is the cheapest, most budget friendly way to re-decorate your home. Think about it...you've already vetted everything that is in your home. It's already passed the 'I like it, I want to have it test.' But just because you placed it on a specific shelf or in a tucked away corner doesn't mean it needs to live there until it dies.
In this episode I teach you four ways you can confidently shop your home, using what you've already purchased and love. Start small or go big. Move pillows or move the couch. The choice is up to you. But whatever choice you make, know this: you have permission to play. There are no rules that say your lamp needs to continue living as a living room lamp if you'd like to try it out elsewhere. Move things around. Have fun. Play. And ask yourself, "what's the worst that can happen?" You have to move it back because you hate it. OK. Now you know.

Summer Savings Series: Shopping at Thrift Stores Creating a home that inspires you, delights you and one that you are proud of doesn't have to cost a lot. But sometimes it takes more than shopping the house and using what you already have - sometimes you need to shop for the items in need. Curating your home decor at thrift stores is one of my FAVORITE ways to personalize your home in a way that shopping at big box stores (even on the cheap), just can't accomplish. You may LOVE thrift store shopping or HATE it. Or, you may be fascinated by the idea but feel like you never find anything GOOD, but somehow everyone else does. And you may wonder why everyone else has the best thrift stores, when in fact, it's likely NOT the thrift store, but the strategy you use to shop them. In today's episode I'm sharing my top 7 tips for shopping at thrift stores SUCCESSFULLY - so you can walk away with enviable hauls more than you walk away with duds. This is the first part of the summer savings series where we will be diving into different ways you can save money AND have a home that you can't stop gushing about. If you are not subscribed to the show, be sure to do that so you don't miss all the tips coming your way this summer!

| 155 // Don’t let money hold you back from creating a home you LOVE: 7 tips for saving money when decorating your home | 23 Mar 2023 | 00:20:08 | |
My top 7 tips for saving money when I want to re-decorate my home or re-fresh a space: "But it costs too much" "I don't have enough money" "Maybe someday when I'm a bit more settled"
I've heard them all....and some. These excuses hold so many home owners back from creating homes that delight them, but that's all they are...EXCUSES. Often times those same home owners are spending $100+ every time they go in to Target when they meant to stop for Kleenex. Or they don't have enough money to replace the couch they can't stand but their the first in line each morning to buy the $7 Frappucino. Sometimes it's a matter of priorities - and in the description above, that's definitely what it is.
But what about for the rest of us? Those of us who desire change in our homes but we're struggling to make ends meet each month? Are there ways to create pretty spaces that delight us even when we legitimately don't have a lot of extra to spend? YES! In today's episode I'm sharing seven of my favorite ways to save money when decorating your home. I use EACH and EVERY tip every time I'm re-designing a space in my own home.

IKEA...yay or nay?! The next time you head to your local (or not so local) IKEA...look for these things. Here are my top FIVE, always in my cart, go-to, tried and true, absolute FAVORITE things at IKEA (other than the meatballs and the Swedish fish). 1. 20 x 20 down pillow forms (Fjadrar) 2. Curtains (Ritva) 3. Plants (8" pothos) 4. Picture frames (Ribba) 5. Baskets (Fladis) Bonus: Glass bottle with stopper (Korken) These items are always in my cart and the prices can't be beat.
And these items? These, though not always in my cart, are always the sections or items I'm carefully looking at to add to my home or a client's home: 1. Blankets 2. Faux fur rugs 3. Organizers (drawer, cupboard, wall, garage...ALL) 4. Planters 5. Dishes Bonus: Inspiration

| 147 // Sometimes MORE is better! A deep dive into the Cluttercore Decorating Style | 21 Feb 2023 | 00:19:34 | |
Cluttercore What is that? Cluttercore is a decorating style that is not quite Cottagecore (go back and listen to Episode 15) and not quite Maximalism, but it most definitely isn't minimalism. Cluttercore "revels in the idea of keeping things you love within reach and keeping your eyes full of the jumble it creates." Clutter sounds like the right descriptor. But what if clutter isn't your thing? That's OK...the idea behind Cluttercore is that you are surrounding yourself with the things that you love...aka your story. And THAT I couldn't agree more with.

| 256 // 3 excuses I hear about people not creating a home they love - maybe one of them is yours! | 04 Jun 2024 | 00:13:35 | |
Three of the most common things I hear from you: * "I have kids so I can't have nice things." * "I don't have any money to make changes." * "I don't know where to start."
Today is the last Quick Tip Tuesday I'll be releasing until the beginning of August, but like all good teachers, I'm leaving you with some homework - something for you to think about over the next eight weeks. Maybe you'll plug in one of these episodes each week until my Quick Tip Tuesdays return. In today's episode I'm sharing I'm sharing the three most common excuses I get for why people don't take action on creating homes that feel like a respite, inspiring, functional and beautiful.
1. I have kids, so I can't have nice things. B.S. You can have nice things. Either you choose to believe that nice things come with a hefty price tag or you have limited boundaries to keep those nice things nice. 2. I have no money. If I had a dollar for every time I heard this, I would be living large in a lakeside mansion eating bonbons for breakfast. It's true, you may not have a pile of cash lying around just waiting to be thrown into the proverbial fire, but there are SO many changes you can make without spending any money at all or less money than your last trip to Target where you promised you'd only be picking up toothpaste. TUNE IN EVERY FRIDAY through July for my Summer Savings Series where I give you practical tips for shopping on less, doing DIY more and strategies for saving big. 3. I don't know where to start. Starting can be overwhelming, frustrating, confusing, debilitating. I get it. Here are three FREE ways to start this summer while the kids are splashing in the pool while you're sipping your iced tea: A. Listen to the podcast B. Read the blog C. Join the Facebook Group

Are your laundry piles overflowing?! If you said yes, join the thousands of women who complain daily about their laundry. It's the never-ending chore. Once you think you're done, you see another load that needs to be washed. But what do you DO about it? Searching on Pinterest is only part of the solution and will often yield a lot of ideas - so many ideas that you may leave feeling even more overhwelmed and confused at how to systemize it than you started. Develop your own system that works for your home, your family, your laundry. In this episode I share the system that works for me, but I don't expect it to be your solution. Instead, I'm breaking down the process I took to create my own in the hopes that you can do the same three things to navigate the problem, the solution and then creating a habit in order to be successful.

| 139 // What’s the WORST that can happen? Taking strategic action when following your dreams with Stefanie Gass | 19 Jan 2023 | 00:30:11 | |
What's the WORST that can happen? This is a common question I ask my clients. It's become SO common, I find myself asking it in everyday situations when I feel a bit uncomfortable doing something new or trying something different. But what happens when you hear a little whisper on your heart - a dream in the making - will that question be enough to encourage ACTION? In today's podcast I'm having a conversation with my business coach and mentor, Stefanie Gass. She's the host of the .5% globally ranked podcast, The Stefanie Gass Show where she teaches Christian women how to get clear on their niche, start a podcast, and grow a successful online business, God's way. She gives four steps you can take when you hear that little nudge - four steps that encourage taking the brave first step! "Designer"...sounds pricey doesn't it? Is the potential cost of the designer holding you back from getting the help that you want and need in your home? Are you READY to hire someone who can guide you through the process? Before you open the yellow pages or scroll Google, think about these 5 things so you'll be ready to interview the prospective designer when you chat. T.R.U.S.T. T: Time (they should take time to get to know YOU so they can appropriately design a space that serves you!) R: Respect (they should respect your budget, no matter how small, your time and your style.) U: Understand (silly, but...they should understand that they DON'T live there and their design should reflect YOU.) S: Show (they should be able to show you product or a plan before you purchase a thing.) T: Teach (they should include you in the process enough that you are learning a thing or two along the way - so you have a tool in your tool belt for the next time you want a room re-fresh.)

Are you a Stuff Manager? Or maybe a Stuff Shuffler? Whatever you call it, managing stuff is a problem so many of us mamas face daily. Moving piles of stuff to sit down for dinner, putting kids' stuff away to make space for a family movie night, picking stuff off the floor of your closet that doesn't have a proper home anymore. What if, instead of ignoring the elephant in the room, we actually kicked it out? What if, we gathered together enough time, tips, support, encouragement, and accountability to make headway in this problem area that so many of us have had for years. What if...instead of spending our time moving piles of stuff we were able to play games with our kiddos each night? What if...instead of letting the stuff on the table win, we were able to sit at the dinner table as a family and share a meal and conversation together? What if...instead of picking through the pile of clothes each morning wondering which shirt is clean and which is dirty, we were able to find a clean shirt hanging in the shirt section in our closet? What if? | 255 // Do you see your home's design potential? A behind the scenes look at how I pulled together an open concept home using one piece of art as inspiration | 31 May 2024 | 00:36:54
Do you wish you could have someone just come in and wave a magic wand to show you your home's potential?
It'd be nice, right? To have someone come in and show you which colors they'd choose for the walls, what area rug they'd recommend for the living room - along with the chairs, the couch, the side tables, the lamps, the artwork...ALL the details.
Oh, and it wouldn't it be nice to know that they were all the right measurements for your space, the right lengths, the right depth, the right width, the right scale.
Don't forget making sure all the little details are taken care of, like the specific design elements that make your home cohesive: wood finishes, metal finishes, basket weaves, textures, colors...
ALL OF IT is inside a Custom Design Board (you'll hear me refer to it as a Custom Mood board...same thing).
Oh...and don't forget...you don't have to leave your home at all during the process. The design interview happens virtually, the design board is delivered to you (with the rationale) virtually and you can shop...yup...virtually all from the Custom Design Board.
In today's episode I'm sharing a sneak peak at a design rationale for my client Jen, who purchased two custom design boards for her living room and two for her dining room. You'll hear me explain my inspiration piece, the direction of the design and the reason behind the recommendation for swapping out stainless steel handles on her kitchen cabinets.

| 134 // Are you ready for a fresh start in your home this year? 3 things you should do BEFORE making any changes! | 03 Jan 2023 | 00:19:10 | |
You've put the Christmas decorations away, it's a new year and now you're ready for a fresh start in your home's decorations? Is this you?
Before you go to your favorite home decor store or get your credit card out to make the big purchase, I encourage you to Pause. Reflect on what your home has done for you this past year - the way it's served you and your family well. Explore the Purpose you have for your home (or more specifically, the room you want to refresh) and ask yourself what you want that room to do for you and how it can serve you and your family a little better than it did last year. Then, before making any changes or purchases, make a Plan. How does that plan reflect the purpose you have for the room, your unique design style, your feeling word you want for the room and your color palette? Are you drowning in STUFF?
Is there stuff everywhere you look? Are you tripping over things that you know should have a resting place in your home? The good news is you CAN declutter, edit, remove, get rid of (whatever you want to call it) the excess so you can stop living for your stuff, and start living!
In today's episode, I share three ways you can SUCCESSFULLY start decluttering your space to make room for more living - more time to interact with your kids, more time to chat with your husband, more room to have your friends over. More life, less stuff.
If you want help creating a plan to remove the excess in your life, book a call: Decorating S.O.S. because decorating CAN'T happen if we first don't address the stuff.

| 131 // Does something feel ’OFF’ when you walk into your home? 5 ways to make your home feel more cohesive | 27 Dec 2022 | 00:22:16 | |
Does your home look "put together?" Creating a cohesive look to your home can make your home look AND FEEL more cozy. These five steps will help you to create a look of cohesiveness as you decorate your home.
1. Create a color palette: Using the formula 60 (foundation color) + 30 (primary accent color) + 10 (secondary accent color) will help you navigate the color flow of an open concept space. Play around with the ratios of your accent colors. Do you want three? Great - your formula could be 70 + 10 + 10 + 10. 2. Use those colors from your palette as accents in decorating: pillows, rugs, frames, books, artwork...the colors you chose for your color palette should be represented throughout your room's design. 3. Look for the outlier (a.k.a. BULLY): standing in one vantage point look around to all areas/rooms. Do you spot something that doesn't quite fit in with the color palette? Something that sticks out like a sore thumb? That's your BULLY and the only thing a bully does is bring down the room's design. 4. Remediate the bully: you can remediate the bully by removing it and letting it live somewhere else where it will play nicely with other design elements within the space OR repeat design elements that the bully has somewhere else within the room so that bully isn't an outlier. 5. Repeat generalized design elements & specific design elements: repeating design elements like color, metals and woods is just scratching the surface of creating a cohesive looking home. Try taking it a level deeper and repeat design elements that might be a bit more subtle. For example: the succulent artwork you have in the corner of your room. You're not only repeating the colors, but maybe you're repeating the plant itself with a live succulent sitting on the coffee table or the same geometric shape of the plant pot in the art as the candle holder sitting on the mantel.

| 130 // LIVE Room Edit: How do you transform a little boy’s bedroom into a room appropriate for a soccer loving teenager? | 23 Dec 2022 | 00:36:51 | |
"How do you transform a kid's bedroom into one that looks a little more grown up?"
That was the question my client Amy had about her growing son. They were both ready to paint over the mural on the wall and replace the poster of Cristiano Ronaldo, but the boy is still a sports loving boy.
Enter the ROOM EDIT! A Room Edit is my entry level design service where I help the client formulate a plan to create the room they aspire to have. It all starts with a questionnaire so I have an idea of what they want, a hint of what their style is and colors or products thy may need (or want to avoid). The Room Edit is created with A LOT of information - visuals for the client to follow, ideas of color palettes, and sometimes even recommendations for where to purchase products. Th Room Edit is recorded and delivered for watching, re-watching, re-watching...so the transformation can happen with the client is ready.
This Room Edit's theme: Mid-Century Mod with an ode to the pitch - Enjoy!

| 129 // STOP asking all your friends (and Facebook ’friends’) what color you should paint your room! 3 tips for using Pinterest as a tool when decorating your house | 21 Dec 2022 | 00:31:43 | |
STOP asking all your friends, your Facebook friends, the people on the street corner, anyone who's breathing for decorating advice. Would you ask a complete stranger what you should wear for a TV interview? NO? How about how to discipline your child? NO? What to eat on Tuesday for dinner? NO, NO, NO! But when it comes to choosing a paint color for your wall, you seem to think you need a million and one DIFFERENT opinions! WHY...when you are already overwhelmed, frustrated, confused, discouraged would you ask a complete stranger for decorating advice - especially when you have a visual resource at your fingertips that can be so informative and less abrasive.
Using Pinterest to your advantage in home decorating is a powerful way to understand your aesthetic, but if we only use it for a source of inspiration rather than information - we'll continue to leave feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with a lack of clear direction. And that, my friends, can be down right DISAPPOINTING.
In today's episode I share three ways you can use Pinterest with intentionality and purpose while you learn your aesthetic.
If you're ready for MORE and want help using Pinterest as a tool for unlocking your design confidence, Home Design 101 is open for registration. We spend two weeks using Pinterest to establish a firm foundation before decorating your home. Join us: https://www.figandfarmathome.com/registration

| 254 // If you had 60 minutes to ask a home decorator ANYTHING, what would you ask? Behind the scenes on a Decorating SOS call with home owner, Alissa | 30 May 2024 | 00:39:35 | |
If you had 60 minutes to ask a home decorator ANY question about your home...what would you ask?
You can cover A LOT of ground in a 60 minute conversation: area rugs, front door color, entryway benches, reupholstering said bench, correct furniture for the space, chair selections for a desk, how to style a landing area, opinions about whether to buy two Anthropolgie-like mirrors, whether to keep a marble top table, ideas for furniture layout, the possibility of bringing in color into your home design...(and more).
Those were just SOME of the discussion points I had with Alissa during our Decorating SOS call where her main objective was to make decisions on her entryway and her living room.
Imagine what YOU could cover in an hour during your Decorating SOS call. You don't have to have any of the answers before booking one. All you need is: * a desire to make change in your home * to know which room you'd like to focus our conversation around * an hour of time via Zoom
