| Independent Thinking - Nick and Josh Hacko (@nicholashackowatch) independent Australian Watchmakers | 05 Sep 2021 | 02:10:37 | |
Another episode of the Independent Thinking Show for FifthWrist Radio. This is a place dedicate to showcasing the great people doing interesting and cool things in the world of horology.
Hosts Roman (@TimesRomanAU) and Alex “aka The Podfather” (@thewatchregulator) chat with Nick and Josh Hacko (@nicholashackowatch) - a fiercely independent watchmaking father and son team behind the Australian Indie Watchmaking Company “Nicholas Hacko Watches”.
Join us for a truely passionate and honest conversation about independent watchmaking; the challenges of carving your own path in the horological industry; and the exciting journey Hacko Watches are undertaking manufacturing and machining watches in Australia.
We also talk about the importance of integrity and suffering for your craft; passion and drive which underpins everything Nick and Josh are doing to create a truly unique ecosystem to support and further independent watchmaking.
We also talk about their new watch NH3, manufactured in Sydney Australia about to be released; and why George Daniels can be blamed for unrealistic expectations customers have of independent watchmakers.
Also - we introduce the concept of “artisanally distressed” dials (make sure to listen out for that).
Strap yourself in (watch pun VERY MUCH intended!) It’s a great conversation. Hope you enjoy!
Special shout-out in this episode to Konstantin Chaykin (@k_chaykin); Josh Shapiro (@jnshapiro_watches), Collective Horology (@collectivehorology); Buchanan Clocks; Jochen Benzinger (@benzingerwatches); and Tommy Jobson (@tommy.jobson); Anton Suhanov (@anton.suhanov); Artur Akmaev (@arturakmaev_watches); Kilian Leschnik (@watchmaker.kl).

| DTS - Watch talk with Joe from @BIAOIST | 20 Aug 2021 | 01:22:26 | |
Welcome to The Defining Time Show on Fifth Wrist Radio. This week Anthony (@defining_time) is joined by Adam (@mediumwatch) as we journey to Taiwan to catch up with Joe (@biaoist). Joe is the founder of Redbar Taiwan (@redbartaiwan), a banker by day, and a collector of "OG" watches.
Joe begins the podcast double-wristing some "Oaks", with a "Baby Oak" (AP Royal Oak 56175) to match Adam and a JellyOak (G-Shock GA2100SKE) to match Anthony. We then learn the origins of Joe's top hat logo, his thoughts on how leadership has changed in the past year, and how leading from home has changed his watch choices. Diving into Joe's watch box, we hear the stories behind his Royal Oaks, learn more about his passion for Grand Seiko, and discover the reasons behind his decision to aim to collect the original version of many watches. We then discuss other approaches to collecting that he has learned about through chatting with collectors at Redbar Taiwan and on his podcast (see Biaoist.com). We then briefly dive into the Mandarin watch media, watch collecting in Taiwan, and how he decided to found Redbar Taiwan. We conclude with a discussion of how our listeners can learn more about watch content from the Mandarin-speaking world.
Be sure to follow @biaoist on IG to see the evolution of this fine collection of "OG" watches.

| Popcorn - 1999 with Zach Kazan (Worn & Wound) | 19 Aug 2021 | 01:31:21 | |
What's Good! It's Episode 27 of Popcorn on FifthWrist Radio. This week Charith (@charithsir) and SIdd (@sidd.pad) are joined by Worn & Wound Associate Editor Zach Kazan (@zkazan)!
The guys get chatting with Zach who is a genuine watch and film buff about his passions, how he got into them and how he turned being an enthusiast to a profession working at Worn & Wound. Oh hey, they also throw in a Johnny English Watch Spot.
Then we have a Draft! 1999 is widely regarded as one of the truly great years in movie history so they go deep into it! The greatest movies of 1999, by genre! It's an absolute banger, throw in a trademark Sidd pick, an unfortunate Kevin Spacey mention and a whipped cream bikini. This one truly gets nerdy!
Zach also does his Deserted Island, one that actually has some thought behind it!
PLEASE NOTE: We did have some issues with Sidd's audio on this episode, we tried to rescue and repair as much as we could!

A couple of European guys from the global fifthwrist-family meet to talk watches - this time not necessarily peaceful ... While all share the passion for watches, each of them has a sweet spot for a subsection of the world of watches: Phil (@pippy) loves Seiko, Benoît (@petitsecondes) runs his own fifthwrist-radio show about vintage watches, Wolfgang (@w_a_t_c_h_s_t_y_l_e) represents the Vienna citizen with – of course – Rolex on his wrist, while Claus (@tapir_ffm) is an dyed-in-the-wool ochs und junior fan-boy … Each of the gang will defend his thesis … and the others will – as eloquent as merciless – give him a hard time! | Independent Thinking - Allen Farmelo (@beyond.the.dial); Watches, Motorcycles, Tanks and the Aesthetic Revolution | 08 Aug 2021 | 02:04:30
Another episode of the Independent Thinking Show for FifthWrist Radio. This is a place dedicate to showcasing the great people doing interesting and cool things in the world of horology.
Conversation between Roman (@TimesRomanAU) and our guest - the journalist, podcaster, motorcycling fanatic and poultry fancier, Allen Farmelo (@beyond.the.dial); host of the brilliant Beyond The Dial podcast.
Join us for a passionate and honest conversation about authenticity; pitfalls of marketing; the watch media landscape; our approaches to communicating about horology; NAZI watches; Ducati motorcycles; Cartier Tanks; Andy Warhol; Walt Odets; and our mutual fascination with all things horological.
We also discuss Allen’s first watch release with Alsta Watches - the ALSTA X BTD MOTOSCAPHE 120. Allen deconstructs the concept, inspiration and design of this watch, and just why you should totally get one (obviously, a fully unbiassed opinion here!)
I have been a huge fan of Allen’s work at @beyond.the.dial, and I am sure once you hear this episode - you will be a convert too.
Honestly, this episode was a huge blast! A bit of a language warning on this one - Enjoy!
Special shout out in this one to our mutual friend Gary Shteyngart (@shteyngart) and a couple of special chickens (Snow @petitesecondes) and the late lamented Claude!

| DTS - German watches with Mike | 09 Jul 2021 | 01:15:17 | |
Welcome to The Defining Time Show on Fifth Wrist Radio. This week Anthony (@defining_time) is joined by our favourite and only German co host Claus (@tapir_ffm) as we get a lesson on German watches with all-round legend and German watch expert Mike (@mikestuffler). Mike has a massive passion for German watches and really just watches in general. Like many, Rolex will always weasel its way in somehow, but we take a look at some of Mike's favourites and hear a story about how his whole collection was stolen. Truly very sad but Mike is a trooper and just got on with rebuilding. Mike was a moderator for the watch forum WatchUSeek for many years as well as a host of other forums so we really mean expert and it was interested to hear about how forums do their best to keep the scammers away. We discuss the history of Flieger watches and how they were and still are such an important watch as well as chatting about a weird connection between Japan's fascination with USA well build military clothing and what the modern day Flieger stands for. Claus and Anthony certainly learnt a thing or two about German watches as we're sure you will too. We'd like to thank Mike for coming to speak with us for his first ever podcast and we can't wait to have him back to do a German watch battle!!!!! Be sure to follow @mikestuffler on IG to keep up with all things German watches and his fine collection. Grab a whiskey if that's your thing, put on a tuxedo, sit in your most comfortable chair and journey with us to a conversation with absolute watch nuts talking watches! Recommendations from this episode: Mike: @tempusx Claus: @watchmaxe Anthony: @mecanicuschronometrie - This guy is a legend! | Popcorn - The Sci-Fi Special | 08 Jul 2021 | 02:28:43
What's Good! It's Episode 25 of Popcorn on FifthWrist Radio. This week Charith (@charithsir) is joined by FifthWrist legends Michael (@woodswatchmaking) and Benoit (@petitesecondes). The guys talk through some hard hitting news across a multitude of topics. They start by answering a listener question better than ever before - When does a watch worn by a film character look completely wrong?
MGM gets bought by Amazon, Vacheron Constantin release a heritage for the ages and Michael's back problems seem to be alleviated.
This is all just an appetizer for a main course of a Draft! Epic Epic Epic!
The guys debate their favourite Sci-Fi Films with passion and some personal anecdotes that only comes after a generation of preparation. This one is epic, stipulations are added and rules are set.
All three come with their biggest guns and no one survives.

Charith get's emotional again as he still waits on his cap - calling KP! Throw in a little sports news and Jimmy Butler becoming TAG's newest person that doesn't crack under pressure. We take a look at the history of the movement and who did it best in our eyes. We always learn so much when we go deeper into a specific topic so hopefully you'll learn something as well. | Independent Thinking - Martin Braun (master watchmaker) & Scott Goldman (@goldmanstagram1) - indie watchmaking, astronomical complications, stars and clocks | 29 Dec 2023 | 01:21:24
Another episode of the Independent Thinking Show for @FifthWrist Radio. @FifthWrist Independent Thinking Show is a place dedicate to showcasing the great people doing interesting and cool things in the world of horology.
In this special episode, Roman (@TimesRomanAU) sits down for a chat with one of his horological heroes and indie watchmaking royalty - master watchmaker and clockmaker Martin Braun, and a previous guest and friend of FifthWrist Scott Goldman.
Our fascinating conversation captures the intricacies of indie horology, the evolution of Martin’s horology career, and the trials and tribulations of early independent watchmaking in the 1990s and early 2000s.
We get insights into Martin’s approach to unique designs, astronomical influences in his watches, his (not positive) experience with the Frank Muller, and the current relaunch of the EOS sunrise and sunset watch. This episode is packed with rich stories and insights into the world of watchmaking, giving listeners a close-up look into the complexities and the artistry involved in creating timepieces.
The iconic Martin Braun EOS model (with customisable sunrise and sunset indicators set for the owner’s location) is now relaunched and available.
In USA, you can contact Scott directly on scott@scottgoldman.net or +1 3109637867 to discuss how to buy the Martin Braun EOS now! It is a MAGICAL WATCH!!

| DTS - With William Massena "The Battle" | 14 May 2021 | 01:28:06 | |
Welcome to The Defining Time Show on Fifth Wrist Radio. This week Anthony (@defining_time) is joined by fellow Fifth Wrist podcast host Roman(@timesromanau) and watch industry titan and pioneer William Massena of Massena Lab.
We start the conversation with getting some updates on a few upcoming collaborations William has in store and we ask a few questions about the challenges of collaborations and what were the turning points in his career so far. Its safe to say there is some seriously exciting launches in the coming months and we can't wait. Then we go to BATTLE! The task was set for each person to come prepared to talk out the 5 "Greatest Watches of all Time" (in our opinion) and battle it out. While there was certainly some no brainer choices it was also great to see some unique independent watches make the lists. It was a lot of fun and a privilege to hear William's picks. I don't want to give it all away so you will just have to listen.
Anthony and Roman would like to personally thank William for coming onto the show and sharing his 5 Greatest Watches of all Time.
Be sure to follow William @therealmassena and @massenalab on IG and sign up for their newsletter to stay up to date and not miss out on any of the launches coming this year.
Grab a whiskey if that's your thing, put on a tuxedo, sit in your most comfortable chair and journey with us to a conversation with absolute watch nuts talking watches!
***Full disclosure, we did experience some internet speed issues from William's hotel room but it was all too good to cut out so stick with it, it's worth it***
