| The Messi Rules and Chicago Fire Home Opener Preview | 28 Feb 2025 | 00:29:00 | |
Hey, soccer fans! MLS is back at it again, this time with the MLS Disciplinary Committee issuing a fine to Leo Messi and Luis Suarez for their actions against NYCFC - grabbing the neck of an opposing player and coach - but suspending the Chicago Fire's Brian Gutierrez for a match after a hard foul and contact to an opponent's head. Are we seeing The Messi Rules finally coming into plain view? Or do you think these two instances can be reconciled? In the second half of the show, Nick previews the Men in Red's home opener against DC United. Stay tuned to hear the transfers in and out for DC and how the match is expected to go. The Fire squandered opportunities to take points against bad Eastern Conference teams last season, and if they want to make the playoffs, can't do it again. Tune in and join the conversation! | The More Things Change...: Rebuilt Fire Fall in Columbus | 25 Feb 2025 | 00:27:30
Hey, soccer fans! MLS IS BACK! And it feels like the Chicago Fire never left, after an opening weekend loss where they let a 2-1 lead spiral into a 4-2 defeat. The Men in Red quickly showed what the new lineup is capable of, with Jonathan Bamba assisting two Brian Gutierrez goals. But the defense showed they need work and the roster is still not complete as the Columbus Crew were able to score three straight to seal the victory. Tune in as our host breaks down the stats, analyzes the film, and gives you his perspective on the Chicago Fire's opening match of 2025. Nick also recaps the other matches from around Major League Soccer, noting the wild results from the opening weekend. Tune in and join the conversation! | There's Something on the Wing! Chicago Fire Target French Winger | 10 Jan 2025 | 00:25:09
Hey, soccer fans! New year, new Chicago Fire! The club has been extremely busy in 2025 in building out the attack. Our host Nick provides an update on the transfer fee for new winger Philip Zinckernagel, and how it has allowed Berhalter & Co. to pursue another high level winger, Frenchman Gaetan Perrin. Perrin is a star for French club Auxerre, helping them win promotion to Ligue 1 this season, and continuing his fine form with 5 goals and 4 assists so far. If the deal goes well for the Fire, they'll acquire another TAM-level winger ... and still have two Designated Player (DP) spots available! In the second half of the show, Nick looks at all the new additions to the Chicago Fire's coaching staff, including four new assistant coaches and a Director of Methodology and Talent Manager. These coaches have experience from all levels of American and international soccer and there will be no lack of ideas on how to get the most out the Men in Red. Tune in and join the conversation! | FTF Ep. 48 - Fire Free Agency and Orlando City Preview | 15 Aug 2023 | 00:45:09
Hey, Fire fans and MLS fans! Are you sick of Leagues Cup yet? I know you aren't, but many Liga MX fans are - even their coaches have heavily criticized the tournament due to travel, scheduling, refereeing and Messi favoritism. Tune in for our rebuttal and to hear where they actually may have some merit. Our host also looks at the Chicago Fire players entering free agency at the end of the season: Kamara, Herbers, Omsberg, and Richey. Would you keep them or let them walk if you were the Fire? Nick lets you know just how he feels about the players and their position and value on the team. In the second half, we preview the Fire's next regular season match (it's finally back!), an August 20 matchup vs. Orlando City. Their last meting saw Facundo Torres run wild, in a 3-1 route. Tune in to hear about Orlando City's stats, formations, players to watch, and how the Fire can gain ground in the playoff race. Remember to rate, review, and share the show. Let's go, Fire! | FTF Ep. 47 - Fire's Leagues Cup Run Ends and Transfer Updates | 08 Aug 2023 | 00:36:31
Hey, Fire fans! What a way to go out in Leagues Cup! Przybylko misses a sitter and moments later Gimenez scores an own goal. The Fire were once again victims of their old habits - playing desperate defense and failing to create anything on offense. While Club America looked frustrated at times during the second half, they were soundly in control of the match. Tune in as we discuss the lineup choices, the stats, and the overall impressions of the match. In the second half of the show, join our host Nick as he recaps all the big transfers from around Major League Soccer. Several playoff-bound teams have signed players who will help shore up their defense or keep their offense rolling. We cover the latest moves from LAFC, LA Galaxy, San Jose, Dallas, Minnesota, and the Crew. Remember to rate, review, and share the show. Let's go, Fire! Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 46 - Clipped Wings: Fire Down Loons in Leagues Cup | 01 Aug 2023 | 00:42:03 | |
Hey, Fire fans and MLS fans! What a way for the Chicago Fire to open up their history in Leagues Cup! Their improbably victory at Minnesota United marks a real turning point in the club this season. Through a combination of better team play, coaching, and catching some lucky breaks, the Men in Red look poised for a successful Leagues Cup run and a positive second half of the Major League Soccer regular season. And for the second half of our show, our host breaks down all the biggest transfers of the Eastern Conference during the summer transfer window. Inter Miami added two Under 22 Initiative signings to compliment Messi, Busquets, and Alba. New York City finalize the transfer of Taty Castellanos to Lazio and obtain Perea on loan from Philadelphia. Columbus Crew make headlines by transferring star Lucas Zelarayan to Saudi Arabia club Al Fateh. There is some consolation for Crew fans as they also add Julian Gressel. Tune in for so much more from the transfer window. Nick concludes the show with a quick word on the United States Women's National Team. He still has confidence in the team to win the World Cup ... again. But he cautions you to make sure you're getting you news and opinions from those "in the know." That is, not from self-educated internet accounts. Enjoy Leagues Cup! Enjoy the Women's World Cup! And be sure to share the podcast, rate and review.
| FTF Ep. 45 - Fired Up: Leagues Cup, Messi, and Doumbia | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:38:52 | |
Hey, Fire fans, are we enjoying the Leagues Cup!? Messi nets his first goal in MLS, American clubs dominate their Mexican counterparts in Liga MX, and we haven't even seen all the clubs play yet! Tune in and listen to our host break down Messi's play, the Fire's chances of advancing, and why he thinks Leagues Cup will start a cycle of new investment and development in American soccer. Nick also takes a closer look at the Chicago Fire's latest acquisition, defensive midfielder Ousmane Doumbia. The 31 year old Ivorian has spent his career in the Swiss Super League, making a name for himself as a reliable starter and solid defender. How will this translate to MLS? Nick let's us know the stats and how he anticipates his role with the Men in Red. Don't forget to follow the show and share the link! Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 44 - Chicago Fire: For Real or Frauds? and Leagues Cup Preview | 18 Jul 2023 | 00:45:08 | |
Hey, Fire and MLS fans! Welcome back as we Feed the Fire talking about the player ratings and the Fotmob/Sofascore effect on the sport. Our host rants about how it's hurting the game - just like fantasy football did to the NFL - but he also takes a deep dive into how it can be useful for certain evaluations, comparisons, and conversations. Nick also recaps the Chicago Fire's win vs. a reeling Toronto FC squad. Your Men in Red did just enough to take three points - and it took them 90 minutes and a shocking Przybylko header to do it - from the Reds north of the border. Tune in for a stats recap and commentary by our special guest, John Donovan. After the break, Nick admits the Fire have turned a corner, but doubles down on the fact the team still isn't that good. Favorable matchups are helping them more than they're helping themselves, and the franchise still sits in 8th place (of 15 teams). Finally, Leagues Cup is upon us! Get your primer on the newest tournament and find out exactly why it's so important for teams to take the event seriously. This ain't the opening rounds of the US Open Cup. | FTF Ep. 43 - Bizarro Soccer: Fire Good, USMNT Bad | 14 Jul 2023 | 00:38:26
Hey, soccer fans! It was a bizarro Wednesday on the American soccer landscape. In Major League Soccer, we saw the Chicago Fire jump out to a quick 3-0 lead vs. conference rival CF Montreal and hold on for the victory. Not to be outdone by young stars Georgios Koutsias and Brian Gutierrez, Xerdan Shaqiri found his finishing touch. Tune in as our host breaks down the team play and goals (including Shaqiri's stunner), and analyzes whether the Chicago Fire - your Men in Red - have turned a corner. In the second half of the show, Nick previews the Fire's next matchup: a beleaguered and battered Toronto FC. The reds to the north are without Italian star Bernardeschi, and plenty of other players are sidelined with injuries. The Fire's hot streak of catching opponent's at their weakest continues, but can they convert it to another three points? Stay tuned. To wrap the show, Nick also comments on the play of the USMNT in the Gold Cup, after an upsetting loss to Panama in the semi-finals. Even though the USA brought their "C Team," the expectation was still to win the tournament. Listen in as we discuss the player pool depth and where US Soccer Federation (USSF) needs to continue to build the program. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 42 - Did Someone Say Playoffs? Nashville Win Recap, Montreal Match Preview | 11 Jul 2023 | 00:40:26 | |
Hey, soccer fans! Don't say it too loudly, but the Fire are on the verge of being above the playoff line. After an uninspiring win over Nashville SC, the Men in Red sit level with 9th place CF Montreal on points. And would you look at that - who is the next opponent on the schedule: CF Montreal. It's fate! The Fire face off against one of the only teams in Major League Soccer that are worse than they are (at least statistically). Don't expect beautiful soccer, but do expect a hard fought match to try to keep a rival out of a playoff spot. Do the Fire pull off another victory? Any little bit of offense will go a long way against this Montreal team. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 41 - Home Cooking: Previewing Nashville at Chicago and other MLS News | 07 Jul 2023 | 00:25:53 | |
Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire are back home and the USMNT are defending the Gold Cup - it's a great weekend for soccer in Second City. Your Men in Red welcome Nashville SC to Soldier Field and look to steal three points from the 2nd best team in the Eastern Conference. Though down a couple starters to international duty, you can bet that Hany Mukhtar and Dax McCarty are going to be on their game looking to counter-attack the Fire. Tune in to hear how Nashville stacks up against Chicago, and how the Fire can find a way to win. Also, there's drama in the Fire locker room as striker Kacper Przybylko posts on social media about going to a place where he is valued. Where there's smoke, there's fire...and the Fire locker room may soon be ablaze. In the 2nd half, our host Nick looks at notable matches from around the league and around the country. When not watching the Fire, his eyes will be on Atlanta vs. Montreal, LAFC vs. San Jose, and Vancouver vs. Seattle....and the USMNT! The Gold Cup Quarterfinals kick-off July 8 and 9, and Nick's picking the USA to repeat as champions. Hear his other picks leading up to the final by listening to every minute of our latest episode of Feed the Fire.Let us know what you think about the state of the Fire and the USMNT in the comments below. | FTF Ep. 40 - Heat Check: Fire Burned in Orlando and Gold Cup Update | 04 Jul 2023 | 00:38:36
Hey, Fire fans! Well, your Men in Red got burned while in the Sunshine State. They return from their latest away match with zero points after an underwhelming 3-1 loss. The Fire looked like they had no game plan on offense, a bad game plan on defense, and no ideas how to change it from the coaches. Tune in as we break down the goals, the stats, and the opinion on their performance. In the second half, we review notable Major League Soccer (MLS) results and how the teams will use those for momentum. Our host recaps the Concacaf Gold Cup - predicting who advances and highlighting the stand-outs from the USMNT. The Yanks are certainly looking for another trophy despite not bringing their biggest stars. Have a Happy Independence Day and be sure to share the show and grow the conversation! | FTF Ep. 39 - Keep the Streak: Previewing Fire at Orlando | 01 Jul 2023 | 00:25:14
Hey, Fire fans! Will the Chicago Fire keep their win streak alive in Orlando? Tune in as our host breaks down the Men in Red's next matchup against a difficult Orlando City squad. With the return of three starters from international duty, Orlando City will have a rejuvenated and deeper lineup. If they can keep the Fire on their heels with counter-attacks and transition offense, it'll be a long day at the office for Rafael Czichos and the backline. Fortunately, goalkeeper Chris Brady has proven to be a great shot stopper. In the second half of the show, Nick looks at some of the transfers from around Major League Soccer. This summer transfer window has teams very active, whether adding depth for a playoff run or re-arranging their rosters for the future. And don't forget the big matchup of this weekend: New England at Cincinnati! The top teams of the Eastern Conference face-off in a game that could impact the playoffs. Stay tuned, and thanks for listening! Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| A New Dane: Chicago Fire Sign Philip Zinckernagel | 07 Jan 2025 | 00:35:50 | |
Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire gave their fans a late Christmas present, announcing the signing of Danish winger Philip Zinckernagel. Zinckernagel comes to the Fire from Club Brugge, has a winning pedigree across several European leagues, and will be expected to generate offense and opportunities for Hugo Cuypers. Zinckernagel signed a four-year, TAM deal with the Men in Red, allowing them to keep both of their remaining Designated Player (DP) slots open. We also have international news, as the Mauricio Pochettino and the USMNT announced their January camp roster. 24 players were called in - 23 from MLS rosters - including the Chicago Fire's own Brian Gutierrez. There will be stiff competition for who can impress the new head coach and givce themselves the opportunity to play for the Yanks in major competitions. Tune in and join the conversation! | FTF Ep. 38 - Signings & Speculation: Who is the Next Fire Manager? | 29 Jun 2023 | 00:41:18
Hey, Fire fans! The Men in Red are on a win streak, they've signed a new DP, and they may have their next head coach. What a week!? Stay tuned as our host recaps the victory in Kansas City, where a Fabian Herbers goal defeated Sporting KC 1-0. Take it with a grain of salt, though, as this was as much an SKC failure as a Fire success. In the next segment, Nick talks about the Fire's latest DP signing - a short term DP loan - Ousmane Doumbia. How will the defensive midfielder fit in with Fire's already crowded midfield roster? Hopefully this is a sign of moves in the front office and not a roster necessity. In the final segment, Nick analyzes the coaching rumor that Niko Kostenoglou is the Fire's next manager. Hear about his history as a coach, and whether this is anything more than Greek sports media hype. We also give you the latest MLS coaching news: Bob Bradley OUT in Toronto, and Tata Martino IN at Inter Miami. Stay tuned, and thanks for listening! Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 37 - I Don't Get It: Fire Notch Historic Win vs. Timbers | 24 Jun 2023 | 00:12:19 | |
Hey, Fre fans. Your Men in Red came back from a road trip to Providence Park in Portland with 3 points and a historic victory against Rose City. I don't fully understand how they did it, but it was in large part due to the stellar play by Brian Gutierrez and Chris Brady. Next up for the Chicago Fire, another difficult road trip-this time to a resurgent Sporting Kansas City. Tune in for what our host thinks will change the game for the Fire Nick also discusses the problem with Apple TV and MLS broadcasters and addresses the latest Fire coaching rumors. Let us know what you think via social media, and enjoy the next match. Let's go, Fire!
| FTF Ep. 36 - Forest Fire! Chicago vs. Timbers Preview and USMNT Win Nations League | 20 Jun 2023 | 00:21:22 | |
Hey, Fire fans and USMNT fans! The Fire are getting ready to re-start their MLS campaign, and the United States are once again the Kings of Concacaf!Tune in as our host previews the strengths and weaknesses of the Men in Red's next opponent: the Portland Timbers. The Timbers defense and home-field advantage should give them the edge. For the Fire to win, they'll have to possess the ball and keep up the pressure - which they've never done yet. Yikes. Nick also gives us his quick impressions on the USMNT victory over Canada in the Nations League Final. The Yanks played some of the best soccer we've seen in recent memory, and dominated their northern neighbors. Most impressive were the defensive performances by Joe Scally and Antonee Robinson and the offensive performances by Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun, but every single player did his part and did it well. Congrats to the reigning Kings of Concacaf! Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 35 - International Window: Fire on Break, USMNT on Fire | 18 Jun 2023 | 00:31:08 | |
Hey, Fire fans and USMNT fans! The Chicago Fire are on international break, but we've still got news to discuss. Brian Gutierrez is on the radar of Premier League side Manchester United, and out host gives his thoughts on why his transfer to the storied club would be a great move for the both clubs and Guti himself. We also touch on the new ticket package the Fire front office is marketing (it includes the Inter Miami game!), and discuss why Jesse Marsch would be a great fit to be the next manager of the Men in Red. In the second half, Nick talks about the USMNT's dominant performance vs. its hated rival: Mexico. This was the math that broke El Tri's dominance in North America. And despite USA getting Concacaf'ed (to the tune of two red cards), they showed they won't back down from a challenge. Also in USMNT news, Gregg Berhalther has officially been announced as returning to coach the squad. It's a good hire - despite what your personal opinions are - so tune in to hear ours. | FTF Ep. 34 - Finding New Ways to Lose: Fire Stunned by Zelarayan, Crew | 13 Jun 2023 | 00:42:09
Hey, Fire fans! Well, we should've predicted the Fire to lose, we could've predicted it'd be a late game stunner ... but we NEVER would've predicted Lucas Zelarayan to win it from past mid-field! The Men in Red found a stunning new way to lose against conference rival Columbus Crew, and continue their residency in the basement of Major League Soccer. Stay tuned as we look at the goals, the statistics, and all the hot-takes from the last match. In the second half of the show, our host previews the Chicago Fire's upcoming schedule (mercifully they have 9 days off, but then 3 road games), and how points are going to be sparse in the near future. Nick also breaks down the Eastern Conference and Western Conference standings, giving you his surprise teams of the season so far - both the good and the bad. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 33 - MESSI TO MLS!!! ...and the Fire did stuff, too. | 09 Jun 2023 | 00:31:02 | |
Hey, soccer fans! Leo Messi has agreed to play for Major League Soccer as part of Inter Miami CF! This is the biggest signing since David Beckham fundamentally changed the way MLS is played and constructed. Messi will undoubtedly force teams to adjust how they think about their clubs in both the business and soccer/sporting aspects. As for fans of the Chicago Fire, they need to see how a team like Inter Miami - who only has been in existence for 3 years and has already been sanctioned for roster violations - goes out and makes a signing of such impact and magnitude. In this episode, our host also looks back at the Chicago Fire's last match, a 4-1 embarrassment in the US Open Cup to the Houston Dynamo. The Men in Red played their worst game of the season, showing the weaknesses of the players, coaches, and front office. Nick also looks ahead to the Fire's match against Columbus Crew this weekend. Surprisingly, the Crew are one of the best offensive teams in MLS. They lead the league in goals and assists, and have some of the best passing numbers across all clubs. They are going to be a very difficult test for the Fire, and we here at Glass House Soccer are not optimistic. What do you think of Messi's announcement? How do you think the match will play out? Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 32 - Open Cup or Bust After Defeat at Cincinnati | 05 Jun 2023 | 00:31:48 | |
Hey, Fire fans! We're all in on the US Open Cup, right? After the defeat to FC Cincinnati, the Chicago Fire need to focus on their best opportunity to do something meaningful this season. And from the way they played in Cincinnati, they already were. Interim manager Frank Klopas rolled out a 5-4-1 formation and played for a draw from the opening whistle. He rotated his squad and tried to preserve his defense, but once again, the Men in Red couldn't hold onto points late. Lucho Acosta scored the winner for FCC in the 83rd minute, and the Fire left Ohio with nothing to show for their efforts. Tune in as our host breaks down the stats and the disappointment of the match. In the 2nd half of the show, Nick looks ahead to the US Open Cup where the Chicago Fire will face the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo have had a more impressive Cup run than Chicago so far, but a single-elimination tournament can produce many surprises. The Fire will need to create much more on offense than they have in their recent stretch of games to have any chance of claiming their 5th USOC Trophy - which would be an MLS club record. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 31 - Draws That Feel Like Losses: Toronto FC Recap & FC Cincinnati Preview | 02 Jun 2023 | 00:23:39 | |
Hey, Fire fans! The Chicago Fire are coming off a mid-week match at BMO Field, and unfortunately are coming off another draw. While a draw at Eastern Conference power New England may have felt like progress, the draw against Toronto FC certainly felt like a loss. The Fire changed up their formation, moved players around (Koutsias to the wing? Never again!) and would have ended up with a much worse result if not for the likes of goalkeepers Chris Brady and Spencer Richey. It looked like the Fire were playing for a draw in the second half and already thinking about their next US Open Cup match. But they can't overlook FC Cincinnati! The Men in Red travel to the Queen City (yes, another city with that nickname) to take on the top team in Major League Soccer right now. I don't think Brandon Vazquez will miss like he did in the first meeting between these squads, and Lucho Acosta certainly won't be a late sub for the orange and blue. This could be an ugly game for the Fire, who will have to rely on turnovers and quick counter-attacks if they are to have any chance at a result. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 30 - Away Day Draw vs. New England and TFC Preview | 30 May 2023 | 00:34:45 | |
Hey, Fire fans! Your Men in Red, the Chicago Fire, played the New England Revolution to a 3-3 draw at Gillette Stadium, behind goals from Georgios Koutsias, Maren Haile-Selassie, and an own goal from the Revs defense. However - and as per usual - the Fire were unable to hold the lead, giving up equalizing goals off of corner kicks to Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore. (And that was after Noel Buck opened things up for New England with a banger.) In the second half of the show, Nick looks forward to the mid-week matchup against Eastern Conference rival Toronto FC. TFC is coming off a solid win, but internal struggles between manager Bob Bradley and Italian star Federico Bernardeschi could undermine their chances of a win streak. If the Fire continue to play counter-attacking football, and Lorenzo Insigne and Richie Laryea can't pick up the slack, maybe the Men in Red from the States take the three points. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 29 - Rekindled: Fire Advance in USOC, Face Revs in MLS | 26 May 2023 | 00:26:25 | |
Hey, Fire fans! Are you done celebrating the US Open Cup victory over Austin FC? Keep it going as long as you can, but also be prepared for MLS play against Eastern Conference foes, the New England Revolution. Your Men in Red travel to Massachusetts this weekend to start their climb out of Major League Soccer's basement. In this show, our host Nick previews the stats, line ups, and strategies of the Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution. Will we see a rivalry rekindled? Or will the Fire revert to their ways on the road? Stay tuned and find out! Nick also looks at some Fire coaching rumors, compares Gregg Berhalter to past Fire managers, and updates everyone on the contract extension of homegrown Mauricio Pineda. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| New Year House Cleaning: Fire Transfer Salquist | 03 Jan 2025 | 00:20:04 | |
Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire house cleaning continues under new Director of Sport and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. This time, defense Tobias Salquist is on the outs, being transferred to FC Nordsjaelland of the Danish Superliga. Salquist will likely not be missed - he only appeared in 14 matches due to injuries - and when he played, looked like he could not keep up with the pace and physicality of MLS. In this episode, Nick also discusses the Philadelphia Union hiring new head coach Bradley Carnell. The former St. Louis City manager will likely play a high pressing style on the pitch, and off the pitch will likely agree with everything General Manager Ernst Tanner does. This hiring puts all the pressure on Tanner to get things right, or he'll likely be the next employee shown the door for the Union's failure. Tune in and join the conversation! | FTF Ep. 28 - Beware Greeks Bearing Goals: Fire Draw Atlanta | 22 May 2023 | 00:36:08
Hey, Fire fans! It was unofficially Greek Night at Soldier Field with Chicago’s Georgios Koutsias and Atlanta’s Giorgos Giakoumakis combining for three of the six goals on the night. The Greek strikers lifted their teams to a point each, but it was ultimately another disappointing performance by the Men in Red. An abysmal first half was salvaged by a masterful Xerdan Shaqiri corner kick (scored an own goal against the Five Stripes, but we all know it was an Olimpico), and the Fire showed enough effort to salvage a draw. In today's show, our host uses the goals as jumping off points to analyze the Fire's defensive lapses, lack of talent, and how relying on effort - and utility player/try-hard-effort-guy Fabian Herbers - will always lose out to superior talent. Nick also looks at the Fire's schedule over the next several weeks, and explains how the season could be over very soon. How did you feel about the match against Atlanta United? Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 27 - Court Jesters: Fire a Joke in the Queen City | 19 May 2023 | 00:28:29 | |
Hey, Fire fans! The Men in Red put on another joke of a performance at Charlotte FC during their midweek match. Despite the first half goal from Kacper Przybylko (who nearly turned a breakway into a blunder), the Chicago Fire allowed the opposition two late goals. The club from the Queen City saw Brandon Cambridge announce himself to MLS with a two goal performance. The Fire again showed their mental weakness, their tactical incompetence, and poor defending. In the show's second half, our host looks at the salaries of the Chicago Fire, as recently released by the MLS Players Association (MLSPA). It's not surprising that Shaqiri is vastly underperforming his contract, but the numbers paint a bigger picture of incompetent spending and clueless roster building. Nick compares the Fire roster salaries to LAFC - a team known for constructing solid rosters year over year - and poses the question: What if we took $4 million from Shaqiri's contract and spent it on better players on the bottom half of the roster? Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 26 - Rinse & Repeat: Fire beat St. Louis Again! Take on Charlotte Shortly | 16 May 2023 | 00:30:56 | |
Hey, Fire fans! The Fire are on a win streak! ... kind of. The Chicago Fire repeated their winning effort in regular season MLS play, defeating expansion side St. Louis CITY SC 1-0 in Soldier Field. That made it two in a row in all competitions, the Fire's best run of form in over a month. Tune in to hear out host give you his thoughts on the game, including the goal, the Klopas Effect, and how the Xerdan Shaqiri and Brian Gutierrez are able to play productive soccer together. In the second half, Nick looks ahead to the Men in Red's next matchup: an away match to Charlotte FC. The Crown City club is coming off a big win against Atlanta United (3-1!) but have they turned their season around? Both Chicago and Charlotte are fighting to move above the playoff line. Get to know which players to watch for from Charlotte, and hear the odds and prediction of the match. What did you think of the Fire pulling off the St. Louis Double? What will be their next result? | FTF Ep. 25 - The St. Louis Double: Previewing Chicago Fire vs. St. Louis City | 11 May 2023 | 00:26:58
Hey, Fire fans! What a week it's been! With the firing of manager Ezra Hendrickson and the US Open Cup victory vs. St. Louis City, the miserable loss vs. Nashville SC seems like forever ago. Now, the Men in Red welcome the Arch-rivals to Soldier Field and look to pull off the "St. Louis Double" by beating their new rivals in Open Cup play and MLS regular season play. Tune in as we look at St. Louis' possible formation and lineup, their strengths, and what the Fire will need to do to take all three points at home. We also read through former coach Ezra Hendrickson's farewell letter issued via social media. A classy look, yes, but there are some not-so-subtle insults and shots taken at the Chicago Fire FC organization. What did you think will be the result this weekend? | FTF Ep. 24 - EZRA OUT! Fire rocked in Music City, Sack Manager | 08 May 2023 | 00:37:39
Hey, Fire fans. The Chicago Fire have fired manager Ezra Hendrickson and assistant coach Junior Gonzalez. Fans of the Men In Red are breathing a collective sigh of relief (at least until they heard Frank Klopas was been named interim manager). This news comes as no surprise as the Fire have struggled to find any offense this season, frequently blow leads, and are coming off their worst match of the season to Nashville SC. Down in the Music City, the Fire got rocked 3-0 behind a hat trick from Hany Mukhtar. After two penalty kicks, the side from Chicago collapsed mentally, allowing a third to the reigning MLS MVP. The Fire tried a new 3-5-2 formation, but Nashville was the absolute wrong team for that. Tune in as we analyze the news of the Ezra's firing, review the formation and stats of the game, and what we anticipate for the future of the club. What did you think of the match and Ezra being sacked? Let us know in the comments below. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube
| FTF Ep. 23 - Will the Fire get Cooked? Previewing Chicago Fire at Nashville SC | 05 May 2023 | 00:23:13 | |
Hey, Fire fans! Are you ready for more? Well, get ready. The Men in Red travel to Geodis Park in the Music City to take on Nashville SC. In a city known for barbeque and music, I hope you're ready for the Fire to get cooked - or get rocked - or just get embarrassed by a superior opponent. Tune in as out host looks at the top players from Nashville, the anticipated formations, and the odds on the match. Nick gives his prediction, as well, and he is not optimistic that Chicago comes home with a point. In the second half of the show, Nick also discusses why the Chicago Fire not releasing Brian Gutierrez and Chris Brady for youth international duty at the U-20 FIFA World Cup is the wrong decision. | FTF Ep. 22 - Please make it stop! Fire lose late at home. Again. | 01 May 2023 | 00:36:40
Hey, Fire fans. I feel your pain. I feel your hurt. I feel your frustration after another lead is squandered off a set piece, late in the game, at home. (And to none other than Fire-killer Cory Burke.) Tune in as we look back on another disappointing match by the Men in Red. Our host, Nick, breaks down the goals, the tactics, and the ... questionable ... decisions by the coaching staff. We also take a deep dive into the substitution patters by manager Ezra Hendrickson. Yes, he had to make an early move at center back for an injured Carlos Teran, but he had no backup CBs on the roster and was unable to adjust to this early setback. Stay tuned to hear some of the head coach's quotes, and how he continues to indict himself every time he opens his mouth. 00:00 Intro 2:22 - Goals Breakdown 5:36 - Examining Chris Mueller 9:42 - Substitution Failures 14:23 - Ezra Hendrickson Quotes 18:31 - John Donovan Segment 27:26 - Stats Review 31:04 - Fire and MLS Updates What'd you think of the match? | FTF Ep. 21 - Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Red Bulls New York | 28 Apr 2023 | 00:21:36
Hey, Fire fans! I hope you have a short memory (what Atlanta game?) because the Red Bulls of New York are coming to town! Our Men in Red have a great opportunity to get back into the win column against a New York team that is struggling to score goals. They are also down several starters while the Fire are expected to have a full compliment of players. Tune in as Nick looks at anticipated roster moves, players to watch, and some trivia between the teams. He also covers the betting odds and gives his predictions (spoiler alert: he's not confident in the Fire). What's your prediction for the match? Let us know in the comments below! | FTF Ep. 20 - Fire Burned in Atlanta, Recapping Chicago Fire at Atlanta United | 25 Apr 2023 | 00:38:22
Hey, Fire fans! How are we felling after another debacle by our Men in Red? Our host is not happy - and he's going to let you know just how he feels. The Fire lose in the most Chicago Fire way possible - an own-goal in stoppage time (off the player's backside, no less!). As usual, we look at the goals and the stats, but Nick really has a fire lit under him. He expresses his frustration against his home town team, and rips into any idea that the Fire are having a decent season. Sadly, the only solution seems to be to a complete rebuild - something Chicago sports fans are sadly too familiar with. What did you think of the match and of the Fire? Let us know in the comments below.
| FTF Ep. 19 - Previewing Chicago Fire at Atlanta United | 21 Apr 2023 | 00:27:08 | |
Hey, Fire fans! We've got another great match coming up against Eastern Conference opponent Atlanta United. The Five Stripes fancy themselves as a favorite in the East, but will our Men in Red be able to bring Atlanta back to reality? Tune in as our host breaks down the players, formations & tactics, and headlines coming out of this matchup. The oddsmakers are not favoring the Chicago Fire, but they may be able to salvage a point by controlling the middle of the field and allowing Brian Gutierrez, Xerdan Shaqiri, and Kei Kamara to do what they do best: pass, shoot, and score goals. This should be a fast paced match between two teams with speedy wingers and wing-backs - Chris Muller, Maren Haile-Selassie, Caleb Wiley, Andrew Gutman, just to name a few. | He Gone! Gaston Gimenez (finally) departs the Chicago Fire | 28 Dec 2024 | 00:36:53
Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire delivered a Christmas present to fans in the form of mutually parting ways with Gaston Gimenez. The Designated Player was a symbol of underperformance and burdensome contracts for the last five years, and by mutually terminating the contract, Gregg Berhalter & Co. have opened up a second DP spot and saved their one-time buyout (Heads up, Arnaud Souquet.) Our host also breaks down the latest front office hires for the Men in Red, and how Berhalter has filled out his sporting leadership team. Nick gives you the details on Darcy Norman, Eddie Rock, and Zayne M. Thomajan. He also breaks down the new season ticket exchange program, and how the new policies are signs of change for the club. | FTF Ep. 18 - Not Again! Fire Draw Union, Drop Points at Home | 18 Apr 2023 | 00:32:39
Hey, Fire fans! Tell me if you've heard this one before: the Chicago Fire look to turn the corner on their season, play a great first half, then blow a lead (at home!). Once again, the Men in Red left Soldier Field with a sense of deja vu. After a good first half where the Fire controlled possession, gave Maren Haile-Selassie his first goal, and earned a wacky own-goal from an odd Philadelphia Union clearance, defensive lapses and poor discipline once again doomed Chicago. In this show, Nick breaks down the goals, player and coaching performances (Why didn't Ezra sub in Wyatt Omsberg!?), and gives his reactions to the match. He also takes a look at Gaston Gimenez, a now polarizing figure on the Fire's roster, and explains why he'd like to just move on from the inconsistent, hot-headed defensive midfielder. Good for Jim Curtin and the Philadelphia Union on stealing a point, but the home team played right into their hands and left their supporters saying "Not again" once again. | FTF Ep. 17 - Rematch! Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Philadelphia Union | 13 Apr 2023 | 00:23:40
Hey, Fire fans, we're back looking at the Chicago Fire's next matchup - a rematch against defending Eastern Conference champions, the Philadelphia Union. In a recent match at Subaru Park, the Fire lost 1-0 but performed better than expected. Will they get the full three points now that they are back home in Soldier Field? Our host, Nick, previews three big questions for the Fire:

| FTF Ep. 16 - Fire Defeat Loons! Recapping Chicago's Win Over MNUFC | 10 Apr 2023 | 00:30:02 | |
Hey, Fire fans! The Fire are unbeaten in four matches, have moved up to 6th in the Eastern Conference standings, and are trending higher. Their latest result - a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United - was the Fire's best match of the season. The attacked cohesively, maintained control of the game, and made the tactical and formational adjustments to preserve the victory. In this episode, Nick recaps the goals, the coaching moves, and statistics of the Men in Red's latest performance. He also looks at young goalkeeper Chris Brady's performance. Despite the howler, he came up with a number of good saves, and has the right mentality to excel in the future. Brian Gutierrez also continues his performance as the engine driving the Fire's offense, and the attention he receives from opposing defenses is opening up lanes for wingers Haile-Selassie and Mueller, and wing-backs Souquet and Navarro. | FTF Ep. 15 - The Loons have landed! Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Minnesota United | 06 Apr 2023 | 00:19:18
Hey, Fire fans, the Loons have landed! MNUFC is in town to take on the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field. In today's episode, Nick asks three questions about the Men in Red and previews how he expects Minnesota United to play out this match, and whether Ezra Hendrickson or Adrian Heath will get the better of their opponent. For the Fire:
Meanwhile on the Loons side of the pitch, I expect a defend-and-counter style. In order for the Fire to break this team down, they'll need to work on their possession and score quickly. Can they do it? What are your predictions for the match? Leave us a comment or get in touch via social media.
| FTF Ep. 14 - What did we just watch? Fire Flat vs. DC United | 03 Apr 2023 | 00:33:13 | |
Hey, Fire fans! What did we just watch? I wish I could say the Chicago Fire's flat play vs. DC United was a bad April Fool's joke, but sadly it's a result of an anemic offense, a defense barely holding it together, and a head coach unable to adjust/adapt over the course of a game...or a season...or his career (TBD). In today's show, our host looks at the offensive woes and how the team is operating on the slimmest of margins for error. Defensively, the team got lucky that Taxi Fountas and Christian Benteke had off-games, otherwise this could've been a 3-0 route at home. (And defense is supposed to be their strength!) Finally, Nick breaks down Fire manager Ezra Hendrickson's post-game comments, revealing that Ezra literally doesn't have the answers. What did you think of the Men in Red in their latest match? | FTF Ep. 13 - Previewing Chicago Fire vs. DC United | 30 Mar 2023 | 00:23:54
Hey, Fire fans! Who is ready for a win streak!? After a successful outing in Miami, the Men in Red are back home to take on DC United. The Fire and their fans are ready to cheer on the squad to another victory. In today's show, our host asks whether the Fire will start Gutierrez over Shaqiri, how the Fire can solidify their back line, and what are the strengths and weaknesses against a DC United team in a bit of flux. And don't forget to listen to the end for the betting odds and Nick's prediction. Enjoy the show and the match! How do you think the Fire will fare this weekend? | FTF Ep. 12 - FIRE WIN! A Hot Time in Miami | 28 Mar 2023 | 00:33:58
FIRE WIN! FIRE WIN! The Chicago Fire get their first win of the MLS season! ...and it only took four matches. Powered by goals from Chris Mueller, Carlos Teran, and "Grandpa" Kei Kamara, the Men in Red return from Miami with three points. The sun was certainly shining on the Second City after that victory. Join Feed the Fire as Nick breaks down the goals for Chicago and Inter Miami, what looked good and what still needs improvement, and his takes on the organization. He also touches on results from around the league and what to expect in the Fire's next match vs. DC United. Let's start a win streak! What did you think of the match vs. Inter Miami? | FTF Ep. 11 - Previewing Chicago Fire at Inter Miami | 24 Mar 2023 | 00:28:45
Hey, Fire fans! Our boys from Chicago travel from Solider Field to DRV PNK Stadium to take on Inter Miami in Match Week 5 action. We preview the match for the Chicago Fire, including anticipated lineups, injuries, tactics, and expectations from the match. Nick also looks at the Herons from Miami and how he expects them to play aggressively against a struggling Chicago side. Despite scoring 3 goals in their last match (a home draw to FC Cincinnati), the Fire still struggle offensively, are susceptible to counter-attacks, and prone to late game collapses. Also, the betting odds are against the away team earning a result. Be optimistic, Fire fans, but don't be surprised with another loss. How do you think the Fire will fare this weekend? | FTF Ep. 10 - Fire Collapse vs. Cincinnati | 20 Mar 2023 | 00:32:19
Hey, Fire fans! What another late game heart-breaker. (And I'm not talking about the NCAA Tournament.) The Chicago Fire blow a 2 goal lead in the last 10 minutes, and only muster a point at home vs. an FC Cincinnati team that didn't even start their best player-Lucho Acosta! Our host gives you his thoughts on the first half, how things changed in the second half, and what exactly went wrong on the FCC goals. Not to be too pessimistic, the Fire did get three goals - Przybylko, Czichos, and Mueller all found the back of the net - but defensive woes and offensive consistency are still an issue. Oh yea, and closing games, and preparation, and coaching... How do you think the Fire performed? Leave us a comment or get in touch via social media.
| FTF Ep. 9 - Chicago Fire vs. FC Cincinnati Preview | 17 Mar 2023 | 00:21:42 | |

They better be! (Though our host isn't optimistic.) Tune in as we preview the Chicago Fire's next matchup vs. Cincy. Nick expects Cincy to press, counter-press, and generate a lot of scoring chances, while he expects the Fire to come out with a similar defensive game-plan as they had vs. Philly (and look how that worked out). | FTF - Ep. 8 - Fire Flame Out in Philly | 13 Mar 2023 | 00:33:34
Hey, Fire fans! The Chicago Fire traveled to Subaru Park to take on the Philadelphia Union in their first away game of the season. And the Fire flamed out in Philly. Our host breaks down the big plays, the game trends, and the hot takes. The three trends we noticed were lack of discipline, lack of any desire to attack (Ezra Hendrickson admitted post-game that he wanted to sit in two defensive blocks), and we found ourselves cheering for mediocrity - a point vs. Philly would feel like a victory.
