Relationships in Recovery: Why So Hard? ep119 Oct 202600:47:56

Like everyone else, alcoholics and addicts have a deepdesire to form meaningful and intimate relationships - and yet many of us in recovery face real difficulties in this area of our lives. Bill Wilson wrote about our having formed “twisted and broken relationships” and noted sadly, “We are people who normally would not mix.”

This four-part series explores why human relationships areimportant, some of the reasons they prove so difficult for addicts, and how we might build healthier relationships going forward.

Fr. Bill’s guest is Marriage and Family Therapist Tom Lavinwho brings a wealth of experience in working with 12-Steppers ready to grow in this challenging area of recovery.

In this first episode, discussion centers the importance ofhealthy relationships and some of the unique challenges addicts in recovery may face. At times these hurdles may appear insurmountable but fortunately, we’re gifted with a “miracle program.”

Distilled Spirits: An Interview with Matt D. ep229 Sep 202601:02:15

Bill Wilson credits his1934 “white light experience” in Towns Hospital as the start of his psychic change and spiritual transformation. Bill experienced nothing short of a taste of the divine. It also began Bill’ssearch for ways other alcoholics might experience similar altered states of consciousness – states powerful enough to jump-start their recovery journey.

In the mid 1950s Wilson experimented with LSD and began a life-long friendship with two of its major proponents: Aldous Huxley and Gerald Heard. In the first episode of this series, I interviewed Don Lattin, author of Distilled Spirits. His book traces the relationship of these three men over the years.

In this second episode, I interview Matt D. from the 12-Step Fellowship All Addicts Anonymous (AAA). Matt’s knowledge of Bill Wilson’s LSD interest and involvement comes from his personal experience with AAA’s co-founders and draws from the group’s extensive archives.

Recently, there’s been renewed interest among researchers in the use of psychedelic drugs in the treatment of depression as well as addiction. Our discussion expands on Wilson’s LSD history and includes warnings for those who might seek a shortcut to spiritual transformation.

A Stein Full of Jung: Interview w. Murray Stein ep414 Sep 202600:41:14

Years before AA existed, Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychiatrist, sent his patient Rowland H. in search of a spiritual solution for his alcoholism. Since then, millions have followed in his footsteps. Bill Wilson corresponded with Jung thanking him for his contribution to AA and many in the fellowship, including Wilson himself, benefitted from the “depth” or “analytical” psychology practiced by Jung’s professional followers. But therein lies a problem.

The Jungian form of treatment is both lengthy and costly, often far out of reach for most addicts. But can a person in 12-Step recovery experience in-depth transformation without benefit of a trained analyst - and can it aid in enriching their recovery journey?

In this series, Fr. Bill explores an essay titled “The Aims and Goals of Jungian Analysis” as it appears in a book edited by Dr. Murray Stein. By substituting the word “RECOVERY” for “ANALYSIS” the outlines of a journey very similar to the one Jung pointed his patient toward comes into clearer view. At least that’s the hope for this series!

In this fourth and final episode Dr. Stein joins Fr. Bill to review the goal and aims of Jungian analysis while discussing how those in 12-Step recovery might best achieve similar outcomes.

Show notes:

  • Jungian Analysis, edited by Murray Stein. The work contains 18 essays on specific aspects of Jungian analysis written by top Jungian analysts. It probably goes deeper than many might be prepared to venture but it’s well worth the stretch.

Journey from Boy to Man in Recovery ep403 Aug 202600:59:01

Many cultures develop rites of passage specifically designed to help a boy transition into manhood. It’s a difficult and dangerous journey, many get lost along the way, and a detour into alcohol and drugs only compound and delay it. Sadly, some never make it.

This series explores the book “HE” written by Jungian analyst Robert A. Johnson. It centers on the medieval myth “the Search for the Holy Grail,” as young Parsifal goes in search of what it takes to become a man – a man in service to a Power greater than himself.

Fr. Bill is joined by fellow spiritual seekers and “12-Step Knights of the Roundtable” James R, PhD, a college English professor from Alaska and Fr. James R. an Episcopal priest and scientist from Florida.  As the trio follow Parsifal on his journey they’ll share some of their own experiences and strengths, along with the dragons they met along the way. Please note, this series is as much for women as for men since the inner masculine resides in the psyche of both sexes.

Episode four concludes this series. Parsifal failed in his first attempt at the Grail Castle but years of wandering and succeeding at the more mundane tasks of life have left him hungering for a return. Johnson calls these, a man’s “Dry Years.” Parsifal is aided by two more characters: a Hideous Damsel and an Inner Hermit.

The panel “sums up” this “Journey from Boy to Man” especially as applied to those of us in recovery.

Willing to Be Willing pt.202 Jul 202600:22:44

Steps 3 and 11 frame the vision for a wholly new way of life. It’s one lived, not under the direction of the ego but under the guidance and direction of a Power greater than ourselves. But the ego still has a role to play and that’s through the right use of the will. The purpose of the will is: TO BE WILLING!

In this series, Fr. Bill explores a talk delivered by Quaker mystic Thomas R. Kelly. It’s titled HOLY OBEDIENCE. There’s a free pdf link in the show notes below. It’s also one of several essays found in Kelly’s book A Testament of Devotion. It makes for great reading in a morning Quiet Time. But a word of caution. Read it slowly; it’s a lot of truth for a poor ego to swallow all at once!

The Power of Two Way Prayer

How to Start a Two Way Prayer Group08 Jun 202600:27:57

We all know the saying, “You have to give it away to keep it.” That idea may be especially true of the practice of Two Way Prayer. Listening for God’s guidance was at the center of the transformative practices of the Oxford Group, and those of us who have been fortunate enough to rediscover it have a responsibility to share it with others. One way of passing it on may be starting a Two Way Prayer Group.

In this episode, Fr. Bill shares his experience in doing this. Even if you’re not ready to start a group of your own, you’ll probably find the information helpful. But if you are willing to take the leap of faith it requires to start a group, you’ll find it indispensable.

Henrietta Seiberling - The Woman Behind the AA Curtain01 Jun 202600:48:15

Most in recovery know that Henrietta was the woman who answered a phone call from Bill Wilson and put him in touch with Dr. Bob; but there’s a whole lot more to her story than that.

In this episode Fr. Bill interviews Julie Frye who served for ten years as curator of the Seiberling mansion and gatehouse and knows more about Henrietta than most anyone alive.  As Founder’s Day approaches, come learn more about this amazing woman and the critical role she played in the birth of Alcoholics Anonymous.

A Footnote on Experience vs Awakening26 May 202600:09:44

In this short episode, Fr. Bill reflects on a brief recording of Bill Wilson’s unsuccessful attempts to return to the original 12 Step wording of “spiritual experience” over “spiritual awakening.”  He also comments on Fr. Dowling’s words to the 20th Anniversary Gathering of AA in St. Louis where he said, “Istill weep that the elders of the movement have dropped the word ‘experience’ for ‘awakening.’”  No need to weep, but it’s good information to know.

Father Ed Dowling: Bill W's Spiritual Sponsor18 May 202600:52:53

Throughout his life, Father Ed was attracted to those who suffered - and since AA describes itself as “a program of attraction,” there’s little wonder this Jesuit priest was drawn to 12-Step members from the Program’s earliest days. In 1940, Dowling saw a troubled man recover from the depths of alcoholic despair and soon after witnessing this miracle he traveled to New York to meet AA’s co-founder, Bill Wilson. He wanted to learn how AA worked.

Thus began a spiritual friendship between two men that continued throughout Fr. Ed’s life. Bill later wrote of Ed, “He became just about the closest friend I shall ever have - and my spiritual advisor, too. He took me through some of my rough going, which, without his counsel and love, I might never have survived.”

Fr. Bill interviews Dawn Eden Goldstein, author of a new and much needed biography of Father Ed. Her book is a “must read” for those interested in AA history and will prove a valuable study guide for anyone wanting to discover the love of God that lies at the heart of every genuine 12-Step recovery.

Love Leads Us Home11 May 202600:43:12

This series address what some of us in recovery refer to as “the God problem.”  Does God exist? Does God really care about us humans – and maybe more honestly and specifically, does God care about me and mine?

People have been asking these questions for as long as we’ve been on this earth but for us “real” alcoholics and addicts whose lives depend on finding a spiritual solution to our addiction death sentence, it’s more than a matter of speculation.

Future episodes will attempt to open inner doors for addicts and alcoholics struggling with the spiritual approach used in 12-Step recovery.

Twelve Step in Three Words17 Feb 202600:27:01

Dr. Bob begged Bill Wilson to “keep it simple.” In that same spirit, the Oxford Group often compacted their program of change down to three short words: CONNECTION – CORRECTION – DIRECTION. In this bonus episode Fr. Bill reviews the 12-Steps in light of these, giving listeners a simpler understanding of the “change” we need to undergo for recovery.

The Addicted Brain10 Feb 202600:55:01

Why do alcoholics and drug addicts find it so hard to quit and stay quit?  Is addiction really a disease? And if it is, how’s it best treated?

It’s been over a hundred years since Dr. William Silkworth formulated his “allergy theory” that appeared in the Big Book. Since then, science has learned a whole lot more about both the physical and psychological dimensions underlying addiction.

In this episode Fr. Bill interviews addictionologist Doctor Nicole T. Labor, DO, author of The Addictoholic Deconstructed. Her book provides the general reader and those in recovery with a much-needed primer on the brain chemistry that underlies addiction. Dr. Labor shares her story of recovery and her passion for helping both addicts and family members recover. You’ll find her knowledgeable, dedicated, and pretty damned funny. Her book is available in the show notes below.

What's a Spiritual Experience?02 Feb 202600:39:09

When setting off on any journey, it’s best to know your intended destination in advance. On the 12th Step journey, to use the Big Book’s original wording, that means following the 12 Steps to arrive at a transformational spiritual experience - one powerful enough to overcome addiction. Of course, the wording of the 12th Step was soon changed to “a spiritual awakening” not wanting to scare newcomers away. But when Bill Wilson tried changing it back to the original, AA wouldn’t let him.

This single episode describes the “psychic change” the Steps are intended to bring about using three quotes to describe the experience. First, a definition that originated with William James in his Varieties of Religious Experience; second, the description contained in the Big Book; and finally, a helpful quote from Jungian author Robert A. Johnson’s book Transformation.  These quotes are contained in a handout found in the show notes.

A Rebel in the Oxford Group: Coming Home & Knowing It for the First Time26 Jan 202600:54:09

David Belden was born into a family of Oxford Group leaders and committed activists. The Group set out “to change the world” and throughout his early years David devoted himself wholeheartedly to this challenge.  But while “carrying the message” in Africa, his life took an unexpected turn that led to his questioning some of principles and practices he had once taken uncritically for granted.

David returned to Oxford University to write his doctoral dissertation on the Group’s history, influence and shortcomings. He recently published a still more intimate account of his own journey toward personal and social transformation and change: The World Remakers’ Child.

This series affords a rare insider’s view of the Group responsible for contributing no fewer than ten of A.A.’s Twelve Steps and yields fresh insights and challenges throughout. Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson praised David’s book for its “steady candor,” “humor about himself,” and “a thirst for a less harsh, more loving, and fairer world.”

In this final episode Dave’s early Oxford Group goal of “world changing” may have traveled full circle. It’s reminiscent of the poet T.S Elliott’s famous lines:

We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time.

Remember, Bill Wison said he derived no fewer than ten of his twelve Steps straight from his experience within the Oxford Group. They had no Steps, but they were well on their way to finding the Answer!

Tom Lavin is a therapist, an educator, and a close friend for over fifty years. He’s dedicated both his life and his career to helping people find effective solutions to the problems that come with being human. Tom recently delivered this talk on “stress” to a group of public-service attorneys in Reno, Nevada. He believes we often try to “cope with stress” rather than seek its causes that often lie below the surface of our lives. As the Big Book reminds us, “our liquor was but a symptom.” With holidays fast approaching, I thought Tom’s message is one that can benefit us all. So, relax, listen, learn, and enjoy!

The Oxford Group: An Inside View13 Oct 202500:59:58

Bill Wilson wrote: “Where did we learn about moral inventory, amends for harms done, turning our will and our lives over to the care of God? Where did we learn about prayer and meditation and all the rest? The spiritual substance of our remaining ten Steps (Steps 2 through 11) came straight from Dr. Bob’s and my own early associationwith the Oxford Groups….”

Fr. Bill’s guests are Rob and Susan Corchoran, both long-time leaders in the movement that gave birth to AA.

Susan’s dad, Alan Thornhill wrote several plays that helped carry the Oxford Group message of spiritual transformation to tens of thousands all around the world. And Rob’s father worked for the Groups amidst the labor unions of Scotland.

Together they labored for many years for racial harmony in Richmond, Virginia helping heal the wounds of slavery and discrimination through a program called Hope in the Cities.

The Oxford Group wanted to “change the world” through the program of spiritual transformation Bill Wilson used so successfully to change alcoholics. This interview will help you better understand the spiritual roots of our 12-Step programs.

Bill recently published a collection of his writings titled Our Trilogy: Poetry for Connection and Purpose. Most of us Oldtimers can spot the genuine article when it appears. Bill C. is one of these. Living Between Worlds in Recovery: Final Episode29 Sep 202500:33:02

When most of us addicts wash up on the shores of recovery to say we’ve lost our way seems a gross understatement. The bottom has usually fallen out from under our lives. We feel utterly lost and painfully alone. The world we knew is gone and no new world has arrived to take its place. We need a map to orient us and a guide to help us find our way home.

This is the world Jungian analyst Dr. James Hollis describes in his book “Living Between Worlds: Finding Personal Resilience in Changing Times.” It’s likely an all too familiar world to most of us addicts. Hollis says not only are we lost, but the religious structures and cultural belief systems thatsupported yesterday’s lost souls seem out of reach for many of today’s men and women.

The series describes this lost-world and how to access the “Inner Resilience” needed to find our way home.

This episode is in three parts – each is focused on insights into the several gifts depth psychology can bring to us in recovery.

Part 3 is the final episode in the series and covers:

A.      We Are the Meaning Makers

B.      From Whence Cometh, And Wither To?

C.     Do We Ever Really Arrive Home?
