Meeting the Great Reality Within: Finding a Guide to Take Us There04 Sep 202400:30:33

Many early AAs were prolific readers. Dr. Bob left a library overflowing with spiritual literature and for Oxford Group members spiritual reading formed an important part of their daily morning quiet times. When I’m asked, “What books do you recommend?” to read before doing Two Way Prayer, I’m hesitant to answer as we’re each very different. But, for me, there's one book I’ve returned to several times and it never fails to speak to the deepest longings of my soul. The Big Book says the Great Reality is within. Thomas R. Kelly’s book A Testament of Devotion sheds a Light that helps illuminate that inward journey. Come along for the ride!

1.) The Facts of God’s Guidance.

2.) The Conditions of God’s Guidance

3.) The Tests of God’s Guidance

4.) One Method of receiving God’s Guidance

5.) The Results of God’s Guidance

The pamphlet is available to download in the show notes

Inner Gold: Finding Those Streets Paved in Gold04 May 202200:38:29

Father Bill completes this deep dive into Robert Johnson’s Inner Gold: Understanding Psychological Projection. This episode examines the search for the “Heavenly Jerusalem.” That’s the Christian symbol for the wholeness we all seek. Johnson warns of the danger in approaching this search “literally” rather than symbolically or ceremonially. He also congratulates and affirms all of us addicts who were, in essence, truly seeking wholeness but going about it in wrong and deeply destructive ways. In the end, spirituality proves to be “the easier, softer way.”

It’s a story and a journey we can all relate to and one that Robert Johnson tells so very well.

Logotherapy and Recovery: Viktor Frankl and the 12 Steps05 Jun 202400:54:12

We live in an age when the meaning and purpose of life are often less clear than ever before. An age when we’re asking questions of doctors we should be asking priests - but few priests seem able to provide meaningful answers to today’s spiritual seekers. Enter Viktor Frankl.

Frankl was a Jewish psychiatrist whose pioneering work known as Logotherapy has helped millions of suffering men and women begin asking the right questions of life and finding answers that satisfy their souls.

In this series, we’ve explored Frankl’s book The Doctor and the Soul. Fr. Bill’s guest and tour guide has been Tom Lavin, a therapist, teacher, and friend who has studied Frankl’s work for years and helped many addicts and alcoholics find new or renewed meaning and purpose in their recovery.

This episode concludes the series. It briefly reviews some of the topics we’ve covered, ties them into the 12-Step journey and contains some suggestions from Tom on what to look for when choosing a therapist.

Show Notes:

Tom Lavin is a Psychotherapist, Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

He’s served for many years as Adjunct Faculty, University of Nevada School of Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Gresham’s Law and Alcoholics Anonymous23 Feb 202200:44:03

Over the years, three ways have evolved for working the AA Program: Strong, Medium, and Weak. Like a cup of coffee or tea the strength makes all the difference and that difference, for some of us, could include whether we live or die! Fr. Bill discusses this classic article with Matt D. from All Addicts Anonymous.

Show Notes:

THE TEN POINTS:The Ten Points represent the spiritual inspiration and guidance for how to work the Twelve Steps as given by the first hundred AA members. These original commitments are the spiritual legacy and heritage of the first men and women whose sacrifice, wisdom, and trial-and-error experience became solidified in the “How it Works" chapter of the AA Big Book. For many addicts, lesser commitments to the Program do not offer the crucial momentum necessary to reach the level of spiritual awakening required to attain true freedom. Make no mistake about it, every person who adopts the rigor and intensity of the Ten Points will be rocketed into a new dimension of existence.

We commit ourselves to work toward recovery and spiritual awakening through sincerely and responsibly trying to do what the AA Big Book suggests by: 1. Completely giving ourselves to this simple Program; 2. Practicing rigorous honesty; 3. Being willing to go to any lengths to recover; 4. Realizing that there is no easier, softer way; 5. Being fearless and thorough in our practice of the principles; 6. Letting go of our old ideas absolutely; 7. Recognizing that half measures will not work; 8. Asking God’s protection and care with complete abandon; 9. Being willing to grow along spiritual lines; 10. Accepting the following pertinent ideas as proved by All Addicts Anonymous experience: (a) that you cannot manage your own life; (b) that probably no human power can restore you to sanity; (c) that God can and will if sought.

Here are the five points from Chapter XX in VRE:

“Summing up in the broadest possible way the characteristics of the religious (or spiritual or 12-Step) life, include the following beliefs:

1. That the visible world is part of a more spiritual universe from which it draws its chief significance; (and)

2. That union or harmonious relation with that higher universe is our true end…

3. That prayer or inner communion with the spirit thereof - be that spirit ‘God’ or ‘law’ - is a process wherein work is really done and spiritual energy flows in and produces effects psychological or material within the phenomenal world.

4. A new zest which adds itself like a gift to life, and takes the form either of lyrical enchantment or of appeal to earnestness and heroism.

5. An assurance of safety and a temper of peace, and, in relation to others, a preponderance of loving affections.”

The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar:
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy,
But He beholds the light, and whence it flows,
He sees it in his joy; (lines 58–70)

Not working so hard, but actually working less as we discover the Great Reality has been there all along just waiting for us to open the door of our inner worlds.
