Raising Kids Who Walk With God | New Research Findings09 Jul 202600:34:31
A major new study just dropped on faith transmission across generations — and Josh breaks it down. Drawing from Passing the Torch (Institute for Family Studies), decades of research by Vern Bengston on relational warmth, and John Gottman's data on repair, this episode answers the question we’re all asking as Christian parents: Will my kids keep the faith when they leave home?

Josh not only covers the key research findings, but more importantly offers practical strategies and connects the dots between your own spiritual growth and the faith your kids carry into adulthood.

Honoring Parents and In-Laws in a Culture of Relational Cutoff01 Jul 202600:32:31
If you've ever wrestled with complicated family dynamics or wondered how to honor your parents or in-laws while protecting your own family, this episode will encourage and challenge you with a deeply biblical perspective.

What does it really mean to honor your father and mother in a culture that often encourages us to walk away from difficult relationships? In this episode, Josh explores why honoring your parents doesn't mean denying your pain—but it does require a biblical perspective on love, boundaries, forgiveness, and generational legacy.

In this episode, Josh discusses:
  • How your children are learning from the way you treat your parents
  • Why we've inflated words like toxic, trauma, and boundaries
  • The difference between honoring someone and enabling unhealthy behavior
  • Why healing doesn't always require cutting people off
  • The power of reframing your family story
  • Practical ways to navigate difficult relationships with parents and in-laws
  • How to discern between characterological versus circumstantial expectations of your parents / in-laws

Why Good Parents are Raising Less Capable Kids with David Thomas24 Jun 202600:46:21
Parents today have more resources, information, and support than ever before—yet anxiety, fragility, and emotional struggles among children continue to rise.

In this conversation, bestselling author and counselor David Thomas joins Josh to explore a difficult question: Have our good intentions as parents unintentionally gotten in the way of raising capable, resilient kids?

Together they discuss:
  • Why confidence grows from competence—not constant praise
  • How over-helping can undermine a child's resilience
  • The surprising connection between failure and emotional health
  • Why happiness should never be the primary goal of parenting
  • The dangers of "rescuing" kids from every struggle
  • How healthy boundaries create security
  • What today's anxiety epidemic reveals about modern parenting
  • Why children need opportunities to struggle, fail, and recover
  • Practical ways to build capability at every age
David also shares one simple challenge every parent can implement this week to begin raising children who are resourceful, resilient, and prepared for life.

If you've ever wondered whether you're helping your child too much—or how to raise kids who can thrive in an increasingly fragile culture—this episode is for you.

The Emotionally Present Man17 Jun 202600:26:58
Most men were never taught how to be emotionally present. They were taught how to provide, how to perform, and how to push through. And for a long time, that felt like enough. But if you've ever come home after leading hundreds of people at work and felt completely lost in your own living room, you're not alone. This is why famous at home exists in the first place.

In this episode, Josh discusses the tension men feel between the demands of their professional lives and the deeper call of their homes. Drawing on decades of research—including what one USC longitudinal study found is the single greatest factor for passing faith across generations—his own coaching work with high-capacity men, and two personal moments where he heard the quiet voice of God, Josh unpacks the three relationships every father must tend: with his wife, with his kids, and with Jesus.

Whether you lead hundreds at work and feel lost at home, or you're simply trying to figure out what a present, emotionally engaged husband and father looks like in practice — this one's for you.

Raising Future Legends: Kids Who Carry the Kingdom Everywhere They Go10 Jun 202600:31:08
We've been asking our kids the wrong question since kindergarten. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" confuses identity with performance, and Josh argues we've been setting them up for anxiety and false selves ever since.

This episode reframes the whole parenting mission around the theme of Jesus's central message: the Kingdom of God. When kids understand their personal role in building for the kingdom of God, their identity stops depending on what they do, what they have, or what anyone thinks of them. It's a parenting paradigm shift that gives our kids a purpose bigger than anything the world has to offer.

We also announce the launch of a brand new parenting platform for raising emotionally healthy and spiritually mature kids called Raising Future Legends.

Letting Go of Old Assignments to Lead Your Family Into New Seasons03 Jun 202600:44:26
After a break with family and a slower pace of life, Josh returns with some existential questions, one in particular that's been sitting heavy: Am I conforming to what everyone else around me is doing, or am I "appointing" my time well with the people who need me most?

Drawing from Isaiah 43, Psalm 90, and Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, Josh walks through what it looks like to grieve the past well, release the assignments of old, and step fully into the season God has for your family right now.

He further unpacks how sweetening retrospect—or nostalgically living in the past—can breed depression, how anxiety about the future keeps us from the present, and why the mundane drive-time moments are shaping the hearts of your children more than you realize. A practical, honest reset if you're catching yourself distracted or not as intentional as you wish you might be.

Why Your Communication Type Matters with Jason VanRuler29 Apr 202600:31:17
Have you ever had a conversation with a loved one go in a completely different direction than what you saw coming? Your intention was there, but the way your loved one received it was nothing in the way you intended it?

Our good friend, Jason VanRuler, started to see this pattern in many of the people he had come into therapy. Conversations between people -- where everything was at stake -- and the intentions were there, but someone inevitably walked away feeling hurt, unseen, or even abandoning the relationship altogether. What one person meant isn’t what the other person heard.

So Jason asked himself, “Why does it sometimes land well, and other times not?”

The more research he did, the more he learned predictable patterns that led to 5 primary communication types: Peace, Advocate, Thinking, Harbor, and Spark. Each one with a strength and each one with an opportunity. Not only that, each person has their own primary and secondary type.

In this episode, Jason unveils each type, how we develop our own, and how we can better understand how our spouse, kids, and loved ones communicate with us. We get into marital dynamics and why we usually marry someone with similar secondary type, but the trouble that can arise when we realize we don’t have the same primary one. We also talk about how knowing the types can help us communicate at a deeper level with our kids.

Calling Out Purpose in Your Children15 Apr 202600:36:41
Quick note: We announced the Tender and Fierce fall cohort. See show notes below.

What’s the first question we ask our kids in kindergarten? “What do you want to BE when you grow up?” We do our children a disservice by asking this question because the very nature of the phrase implies that what you DO is who you are.

What about for ourselves as adults? What does it means to live in “fullness of life,” even when our circumstances might not match our heart’s desire? Perhaps Teresa of Avila held a clue to this mystery when she said, “God is among the pots and the pans.”

In this episode, Josh and Christi define what we mean by the word “purpose” and also identify other flaws of our modern cultural understanding of purpose and how it influences how we shepherd the hearts of our kids. One question to consider, “Is our understanding of purpose, especially when raising our children, filtered through a biblical lens?” In other words, who is God calling our children to “become?”

Josh and Christi also discuss Christi’s own “mid-life” crisis, the many layers of purpose, what the Bible tells us about meaning, and how we squelch our children’s desire for purpose even in early childhood.

Raising Confident, Resourceful, and Resilient Kids25 Mar 202600:37:08
We all want our kids to be confident, resourceful, and to know what they’re good at. The trouble is that we make two big mistakes as parents: We either don’t give them enough challenge, or we burn them out with too much.

Do your kids know that they have what it takes to overcome struggle?
Do they feel confident in knowing what to do when it comes to life skills and everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, or taking care of animals?
Do they know what they’re good at and have a healthy sense of what to do with things they’re not good at?

We call this resourcefulness, and it’s one of the most important traits to cultivate in our kids.

What is resourcefulness?
How do we offer a healthy dose of both support and challenge to help our kids build resilience?
What do you do when you see things in your kids they don’t see in themselves?

These are the questions we tackle in this episode.

The Feeling of Joy: Why it Scares us + How to Pass it on20 Mar 202600:48:09
Get ready for the early episode pivot in this one, folks. Talking about their marriage a few minutes into recording, Josh and Christi had a moment that sent them spiraling into laughter. The atmosphere shifted, so they shifted with it. And the result?

A conversation about joy!

In this episode, Josh and Christi talk about why joy can be so difficult to feel. “We’re actually scared of joy,” Christi says. “It is such an intense emotion that our bodies feel under threat.” Christi goes on to say, “The feeling of joy is so big that you can’t start at 95%, you have to begin by micro-dosing it at about 5%.”

But feel it we must. The Bible says that the joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10). If it strengthens us, it must be dangerous for darkness. No wonder it takes courage to feel it. Like anything else, joy is caught, not taught. Josh and Christi talk about how to overcome the fear, shift the atmosphere, and pass joy onto our kids.

Inner Child Parts, Epigenetic Transmission, and Parenting11 Mar 202600:36:15
Have you felt yourself revert back to a child in the way you react to your kids, or a particular situation?

Watching from the sideline, Josh recently had a moment where his inner child wounds collided with the reality of the his son’s experience on the soccer field. When we come face-to-face with the dissonance between the way we REACT, and the way we want to ACT, something deeper is often at play. Becoming mindful of those moments, and how we respond to them, influences what we pass onto our kids.

In this episode, Josh & Christi talk about how to identify an unhealed inner child “part” of yourself, give examples of redeemed and unhealed epigenetic transmission, and provide a beautiful example of how Jesus meets us right where we are.

As we continue season 8 on Parenting Gen Alpha, we define what emotional safety is and why it matters for getting every outcome we desire in our kids.

The One Factor For Raising Resilient Kids25 Feb 202600:42:40
One of the most intriguing, humbling, and challenging aspects of being a parent is how our kids mirror who WE are.

And what’s really difficult are the societal — or cultural — norms shaping who we are as humans.
Who are we becoming as adults?
How are the decisions we make shaping our kids?
Do our unrealized emotions influence how resilient our kids are becoming?

As we continue our series on Raising Gen Alpha Kids, these are questions Dr. Josh and Christi address. Some highlights include:
  • What it means to “choose your hard”
  • How loneliness becomes a byproduct of self-protection
  • How silence plays itself out in marriage and the cost it has on our kids
  • What if you’re exhausted and can’t choose the hard thing?
  • The joy and “hard” of helping our kids build resilience

The Spiritual and Emotional Influence of Parental Fear18 Feb 202600:50:37
The stats of anxiety, depression, and stress on Gen Z (ages 14-28) are scary and higher than ever before. That’s not hyperbole.

What have been the cultural, familial, and individual influences at work, and what can parents of Gen Alpha (ages 0-13) learn from where we find ourselves?

We believe that parents hold the keys to influencing the next generation. And there is much more hope than might appear at the surface.

But the way through is by first addressing what may be our greatest adversary: Our own parental fears.

In this episode, we ask the question, “Why are we doing what we’re doing as families?” We address issues like the self-fulfilling prophecy, the role of epigenetics in child outcomes, and the spiritual laws that influence our decisions.

The Love Language That Matters Most with Dr. Gary Chapman21 Jan 202600:46:27
What is the love language that matters most?!

That’s the focus of this week’s episode, as our friend, Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, joins us to talk about his new book by the same name, The Love Language That Matters Most.

In this episode, Dr. Chapman drops some serious one-liners to teach us how to practically identify and love our spouse in their own dialect. Sound intriguing to you? The insights are profound.

Here are some of the gold nuggets Dr. Chapman shares:
  • Why our agenda takes precedence over our values
  • How to know what your spouse needs to really feel loved
  • Why the misbehavior of both children AND adults grows out of an empty love tank
  • How to be a great listener
  • The three ways to help your children feel loved
  • And the most sobering question Dr. Chapman asked of himself while raising his kids
As he stated, “The question is not, ‘Do you love your children.’ The question is, ‘Do your children feel loved?’”

Embracing “Presence” as Families This Christmas19 Nov 202500:31:14
Advent season is about “waiting in anticipation” for Jesus’ coming. In the Western world, we wait by throwing Christmas parties, buying presents, and trying to avoid the hustle and bustle.

But instead of trying to avoid, what if we tried to embrace? It’s one thing to avoid, it’s quite another to step into something with intention. In this episode, Josh and Christi share ways of embracing presence this Christmas — both with your spouse and kids, and with God as well.

They cover some key highlights from their Advent book for families, The 25 Days of the Christmas Story, and also talk about what’s coming for Tender & Fierce in 2026!

How the Body and Nervous System Protect our Kids15 Oct 202500:28:20
Have you ever said your child, “Don’t yell at your brother!” What’s happening in a child’s body filled with anger is louder than what’s going on in their brain. As Christi says in this episode, “Our body sends 10 messages to our brain for every 1 our brain sends to our body.” This is why lecturing an overwhelmed child often feels useless.

In other words, our body speaks louder than our brain. So why have we stopped listening to the body? What’s actually going in our child’s body in their anger? What’s happening on our body in our anger? And why, for our children, is loving touch the most powerful way for the body to know “felt safety?”

As we close out season 6 on Relational Intelligence in Kids, Christi answers these questions and shares why the body protects our children anytime there is a threat to their connection, belonging, safety, and dignity. She also explains how we as parents can help our kids restore felt safety and why these principles will be an integral part of KidsRQ.

Raising Kids Outside the Matrix03 Sep 202500:30:43
Make no mistake, we live in a matrix. And the bar set by Western culture for raising children is deceptively low. As parents, we do everything we can to give our kids an advantage. But is more parenting “knowledge“ really what we need? Are child outcomes really better today than they were 10 to 20 years ago?

In this episode, we continue season 6 on Relational Intelligence in Kids by offering a new, yet ancient, paradigm for raising our children -- a paradigm that removes shame, grants God-given purpose, and breaks us free from the matrix.

Relational Joy: Why You Need It and How to Grow It16 Jul 202500:40:05
Think about the deep neurobiological connection happening in your brain as you walk into a room and encounter someone who lights up at your presence, and the fulfilling sensation of knowing that person is beaming from the inside out with only one message, “I am so glad to be with YOU!”

Without relational joy, there is no relational intelligence. Instead, relational joy is the antidote to the numbing out of our hurried lives because you walk around with a sense of knowing you are seen and loved.

As we continue season 5 on relational intelligence, Josh provides what he calls the “JOY STARTS framework”—four principles and corresponding practices spelling the word JOYS to jumpstart relational joy in your life and in the lives of those around you.

Time Stamps:

25:02 You return to joy, not just peace - practices for redeemed conflict resolution and resilience

From Friendship to Sisterhood: A Conversation with Courtney Smallbone09 Apr 202501:29:25
Did you know that being socially isolated is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day! What's really sad about this is that we're seemingly more "connected" than we've ever been, but research shows we're also more isolated.

Friend, it should be obvious by now that being "connected" does not equal relational intimacy.

That's why we're addressing the beauty found in friendship as we continue our series on The People Who Shape Us. In this episode, Christi hosts her dear friend turned sister, Courtney Smallbone (author of Technicolor Woman Devotional of which you'll want to grab a copy!) to talk about the beauty and goodness of deep, safe friendship.

Christi and Courtney talk about:
  • The struggle of finding friends you can have deep connection with
  • The surrender and fight for healthy friendship
  • Authenticity and vulnerability
  • What it looks like to both champion and step onto the battlefield on behalf of your friends
  • And the beauty and goodness of finding Kingdom friends who are moving lock and step in the same direction fighting for each other for the sake of transformation, and for the sake of seeing God's glory lived out through deep relational connection
Time Stamps:
0:00 Introduction
3:30 Vulnerability, authenticity, and the search for deep connection
7:20 How to discern if a friend is “safe”
15:15 Moving from silos to friendship
29:20 Wombs, midwives, and the necessity of female friendships
47:02 Conflict in friendship and the transformation of healed wounds

Experiencing Jesus with John Eldredge26 Mar 202501:04:17
As we continue our series on “The People Who Shape Us,” John Eldredge joins us. He is someone who has shaped how we pray and ultimately how we relate with Jesus ourselves. He’s been a mentor and spiritual father to many, and has significantly shaped how we lead even our children to experience Jesus for themselves.

In the beautiful, kind words of a spiritual father, John shares stories about how he healed while raising his own kids, and what that healing did for how he started to relate to and experience the love of Abba in his own life. He also describes his own spiritual journey as having walked through what he calls “wardrobe doors,” a nod to C.S. Lewis’ pathway into Narnia.

He also shares how to find the people who can shape you in your pursuit and experience of Jesus. The key question John leaves us with is: “What has worked for you?”

Make no mistake, we are who we spend time with — for better or worse. Whether it’s parents, mentors, friends, or extended family, we take time this season to let you in on the people who shape us, why connection is so difficult to find, and why we have to war for healthy relationships.

In this episode, we introduce season 4 talking about why healthy relationships seem so elusive, and what we have to do to find them.

What a bizarre encounter with our dental hygienist taught Josh about prayer, and why we cannot attune to both God and our kids at the same time—but the encouraging insight this offers us.

This week’s episode offers lessons Josh and Christi are learning in their own spiritual journeys as parents, and a few behind the scenes happenings of what’s coming with Famous at Home.

Finding Your Uniqueness: 5 Shifts Families Long For05 Mar 202500:36:57
Every individual is given gifts and talents, ways they can influence the lives of those around them for the better. Even more, every family is unique. The currencies you value as a family define how you live.

What are your values? The currencies that shape your family? Is it time together? Certain hobbies or activities? Adventure? Or perhaps achievement? You may even find that the values you live by are not the values you want to be living by. That’s what the matrix does. It sucks us into living a burdened life.

As we keep looking to move “Beyond the Matrix,” asking the question, “Why are we doing what we are as a family?” this episode is a conversation on vision, direction, and purpose. In other words, “What is your family’s uniqueness?” We start the episode with a humbling exercise and end it with the most purposeful and life-giving question of all, “How is our individual family uniquely designed to build for the Kingdom of God?”

Time Stamps:
0:00 Introduction to a joyful home
1:38 An opening exercise for your family
8:00 Pacing — How to maintain forward motion toward the life we want without burning out
13:45 What the matrix wants for you and how to come out of it
19:00 Dreaming again
24:48 Setting family values
25:27 What is the uniqueness of YOUR family?
30:00 The regrets of dying
31:14 Your family building for the Kingdom of God

A Joyful Home: 5 Shifts Families Long For26 Feb 202500:38:52
The fruit of modern-day parenting, statistically speaking, is an anxious generation. The Surgeon General even said as much of parents in an August 2024 “Advisory on the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Parents.”

Why we’re trending in this direction is the focus this season of the podcast. In this episode, we cover another way to defy this cultural imposition by expanding joy capacity.

What if “joy” became a metric for what defines your family, and for how you raise your kids? How would your life, and family, look different?

As we keep looking to move “Beyond the Matrix,” asking the question, “Why are we doing what we are as a family?” this episode is a conversation on cultivating a joyful home.

Time Stamps:
0:00 Introduction to a joyful home
3:55 New coaching cohorts open now
5:23 What happens when we grow in joy
12:35 How we grow in relational joy
23:15 How joy capacity expands slowly over time
29:00 Responsibility, screens, and distractions
