Faith in KIDS #115 Back to School30 Aug 202400:21:18

New uniform? New shoes? New pants? School might be back, but the Faith in Kids podcast is still here. And, more importantly, wherever we go, God will be with us. He says 'I will be with you.' That’s what we’re finding out from Psalms 139:8-10. And Jam talks about his lawn which isn’t going very well. And he has some really fun facts about wings and four kinds of bird. Wait, are birds mammals? And are you ready to make a fist?

Faith In Parents #143 | Growing Up: I have a valuable body12 Jun 202400:43:35

Ian Henderson helps us to navigate the internet, explaining that it is like a city; full of places to take our children, so much to see and do, but there are murky places where we would never leave our children to explore alone.

A recent report said that 10% of kids have seen inappropriate online images before the age of 9, rising to 27% by 13. Various studies say the average age for seeing those images for the 1st time is about 11 years old.

As parents we want to help them respond wisely when - not if - this situation arises.

Ian gives us the 3 T's and helps us think through the bigger picture, giving practical steps to follow.

Faith In Parents #142 | Growing Up: I am male or female29 May 202400:48:15

Talking through some monsters: Boys, girls, gender, confusion, puberty, worry and frustration. We're in safe hands! Listen in for beautiful clarity, simple advice and plenty of stories so we all leave feeling ready for the next conversation.

We talk through the unchanging nature of our gender and the extraordinary changes that puberty brings to our children's bodies. Parenting often feels like, “wake, eat, sleep, repeat”, so memories and traditions feel like gold dust.

Create a special moment before you return to the routine in January. Light a candle or a fire. Make hot drinks or cold milkshakes. Offer cake or marshmallows. Give the time to the Lord, out loud or in your heart, asking that he would use your efforts.

Faith in Parents #72 | Doing Halloween for Christ with Nay Dawson06 Oct 202100:36:18

Join Ed, Amy and Nay Dawson as they talk through a Christian approach to Halloween for parents. We can use Halloween as an opportunity to talk to our children about fearless faith, living distinctively and loving generously. It is also the one time when our community knocks on our door. How can we love them, offer them something of Christ without compromising our deep conviction that Christ is the light of the world?

People:

Ed Drew - Director of Faith in Kids
Amy Smith – Writer for Faith in Kids
Nay Dawson lives in Southampton with her husband, Jon and two beautiful daughters. Nay works with IFES Europe as their Regional Training Co-Ordinator, previously she worked for UCCF since graduating in a variety of roles. She is the founder of Passion for Evangelism. PfE is a network of creative, public female evangelists. Nay runs an Etsy shop called Houses of Light that sells attractive postcards that tell stories that raise curiosity about Jesus.

Quote from Nay:

“It may well be that we don’t trick or treat ourselves. My two daughters get really scared of that kind of stuff. But we were so busy last year. All we were doing was constantly filling up this box to give away ‘gift bags of light’. If you’re unconvinced, go back to Scripture to see what is says about being light of the world, and if Jesus is the light of the world, we have this incredible opportunity to bring light into darkness and point to the light on this dark night.”

Faith in Parents #70 | Parenting Through The Stages: 18's and over08 Sep 202100:49:55

Quote from Kate:

'I can't value highly enough the intergenerational relationships and friendships that our children have. I get great joy if I see my children at church talking to older adults in the service. A way of supporting each other in our parenting is by talking to other teenagers and kids, being interested in them. I know my children love it when other people come to talk to them and that then gives grounds for support, advice, wisdom - it just slips into the conversation in a really natural, easy way.'

Faith in Parents #69 | BACK TO SCHOOL. With God. Together... a conversation with Mark Meynell25 Aug 202100:45:52

Join Ed, Amy and Mark as they discuss life going back to school after the time we have had...

The "back to school" week can be difficult for a number of reasons - there can be big emotions around starting a new school, or even just returning after a good Summer holiday. Perhaps this is even more pronounced with all the disruption around COVID. Sometimes we can feel like a spiritual failure if we experience these difficult emotions, but actually, they can be a helpful warning light to help us see that something is not right. Emotions are not a good barometer for our spiritual health.

What would be a distinctively Christian approach to things like anxiety, depression and panic? We often need to preach to ourselves, reminding ourselves of what we know to be true about God; going back to the cross, where the many wonderful aspects of God's character come together. How can we communicate this in a simple way for children to understand? "Know the Lord" - remembering what his track record is, and therefore what he will do in the future. Do not be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God. We don't know what school is going to be like, but what do we know? We know that God is trustworthy. How does God treat people through the Bible? That shows us what God is like, and how we will care for us through our fears. The job of a parent is to work out what can I say about God that speaks into my child's fears so that they can say "I'm ok because He has me".

Psalm 46 speaks powerfully into situations of anxiety and helps us get to the point of trusting God amid storms, rooting our response in the truth of verse 1: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
What does it look like for a child to say "God is our fortress?" Knowing that God is with us through all the storms; he is our safe place.

Amy - Faith in Kids
Mark Meynell - born in London and works as a freelance writer, a chaplain in Whitehall, and Director (Europe & Caribbean) for Langham Preaching (part of Langham Partnership). Married to Rachel, they have 2 children – Joshua and Zanna

Quote from Ed:

'Part of parenting is making peace with the fact that your children are safer in the ark, in the distressing situations of life, than they would be if they never left your kitchen. God is their fortress, and in those moments we have an opportunity to pray with them and say "thank you that today you were their fortress; thank you that today you are our fortress and thank you that you have kept us safe."'

Faith in Parents #68 | Parenting Through The Stages: 15-18s11 Aug 202100:51:11

Join Ed, Andrew, Katrina and Zoe as they discuss life at the 15-18 parenting stage.

15-18s are diverse; they're becoming more than just a product of their family and are still working out who they are. Clearly, the greatest thing that we could want for our children is for them to have faith in Jesus, but this is something we can't generate for them; we need to pray for the Holy Spirit to do that. But that doesn't make us passive - as parents we are called to walk alongside them, model the life of faith and listen to what they're saying.

It can be a challenge to direct them in good paths while also letting them make their own decisions - they are getting close to being adults, so as parents we need to start letting them make their own mistakes. In this age group, parents will be transitioning away from just telling their children to read the Bible, and moving towards letting them decide while modelling a genuine spiritual life. Your children will pick up on how you pray, how you love one another in your marriage, how you deal with disagreements, how you relate to others. Young people are open to ideas, and are open to honest people who respect them and listen to them.

We want to really drive home with our children that we will love them no matter what - regardless of what bad things they may do, we will still love them. They need to know that they can express doubts and ask genuine searching questions; they're growing up in a world that is a lot less black-and-white than the world we grew up in, and it takes courage to accept that a lot of issues are more grey than we might like.

People:

Ed Drew - Director of FIK
Zoe - Teacher and parent
Kat and Andrew - Parents of children around the 15-18s age bracket!

Quote from Kat:

"The generation of that age group are living in a very grey world... I think it's so important that our Christian young people can work that through in a safe environment - they've got to be able to say "How do I know what's right? ...And there's got to be a safe space at home and at church for them to be led through it.'

Faith in Kids #61 Seeking to be Meek16 Jul 202100:21:12

Meekness is not weakness! The best life is the blessed life - and we find out how Jesus shows us what meekness looks like. And we're in Luke Chapter 22, starting at verse 47 - and we wonder what the disciples made of it.

Faith in Parents #66 | Parenting Through The Stages: 8-11s14 Jul 202100:51:42

Join Ed, Amy & guests: 8-11s are full of energy, developing individual personalities. They still need their parents, but they're often brave enough to try things on their own - bold and fearless, but also often wonderfully vulnerable and tender. One of the challenges (and delights!) of parenting this age group is that they are all different - you can't treat them all the same because they have different needs. Parenting pre-school children can be physically exhausting, but parenting 8 to 11s is often more emotionally exhausting, as everything is dialed up to 11, e.g. someone in my class said X; I don't fit into that group. Parenting this age group will often look like involving them in decision-making, rather than dictating what will happen; instead of just telling them the right answer, we try to shape and guide them to build a godly character. Often, this kind of development will happen as we work through the difficult situations of life - when an issue comes up, a great question could be, "What do you think God thinks about that?" A wonderful thing about this age group is that they have few inhibitions about praying, so praying through live issues can be a brilliant way to grow spiritually, especially when they know that God has promised to listen to our prayers. 8s to 11s can smell a bluff, so you need to be honest if you don't know something or when you get it wrong - that's a golden opportunity to seek God's wisdom together! We need to be unflappable - they will ask us directly about sex - and also concrete because these children will likely interpret our words as literally as possible...

Louise shares: "The world tells me that my parenting of 8s to 11s should look pretty hands-off; let them become independent and tell them to follow their dreams. Christian parenting looks different, and the heart of it is that Jesus is better and he is all they need."

...have you seen a 'seal' on a tomb before or maybe a 'horse-drawn carriage'... 'but horses have hooves, not hands?'...

Christian parenting is not of the kind that just tells the child to follow their dreams but instead teaches them that Jesus is better - he is all they need.

Faith in Parents #65 | Parenting Through The Stages: 5-7's30 Jun 202100:44:00

Listen in to Ed in conversation with  Amy, Jodie & Adam, talking about how to raise 5 to 7-year-old children, hoping for them to know Christ eternally.

5-7s are getting better at expressing themselves, knowing their own mind, and having a thirst for life. One of the potential challenges is adjusting to school life - especially when they may be either "ahead" or "behind" others in class.

Amy says - "It's really helpful for me to say to myself that God made this little person exactly how he wants them to be, and he loves them; I don't need to try and change them. The key thing that we always pray for our kids is that we want them to know that they are loved by us and by God, and however they get on at school doesn't really impact that; it doesn't make a difference whether they are struggling in maths or don't know their times tables - they are still loved by God regardless of how their results are at school."

With discipline, we need to be really consistent, because fairness is huge for 5s - 7s. You need to work out what is childish vs what is disobedient. With this age group, you can explain what is wrong with bad behaviour - you can even hint at the God-reason e.g. "We don't hurt other people because God loves them"; "We don't lie because God never lies"

Faith In Parents #139 | "You’re not going out wearing that!"17 Apr 202400:44:58

Our daughters, in particular, are under pressure to look good, to appear perfect on their socials and to live for the approval of others. That is so far from the better story that their Creator offers them.

Join us as we chat to Emma Owen. Her story starts as a 16 year old in the work place being treated as a woman when she was actually just a girl. She now spends her time telling young people in the classroom to make sure they don't repeat her mistake on their social media feeds. As we navigate short skirts, plunging tops, make-up and nails, we hear that there is a better conversation we can have with our children than just rules and rebukes.

Ed Drew - is the Director of Faith in Kids
Amy Smith - is a writer for Faith in Kids.
Emma Owen - is a former member of Manchester band The Tribe and former God TV presenter. She has been delivering top class school lessons, assemblies and events since 1997. Faith in Parents #64 | Parenting Through The Stages: 3's & 4's16 Jun 202100:53:56

Ed and special guests Victoria, Jennifer, Dex and Julie discuss the opportunities as well as the challenges that abound when kids are 3 and 4 years old. 3's and 4's are sociable, full of energy and love routine. They are just beginning to grasp concepts like sin, forgiveness, and boundaries. How do we encourage our children to develop and learn to regulate their emotions at a stage when they largely believe that they are the centre of the universe? We model it! Being a parent demands huge patience, and by growing in this area ourselves, we model to our children how they can grow as well. We often get it wrong as parents, and we should apologise to our children for this and genuinely ask for forgiveness, not just pretend that we are already perfect.

Victoria Beech founded GodVenture (link to https://godventure.co.uk/)   to give busy parents fun, easy to do faith at home together. Victoria has 30 years experience of working with children and loves finding fun, creative ways to connect with God at home. She loves gardening and cooking, as well a celebrating a weekly Shabbat and Biblical feasts (which also often involve food!

Jennifer McQuillan founded and ran preschools in Southfields, London (www.jenniflowers.co.uk) catering for Special Needs and Mainstream children in combination. After 15 years in England, Jennifer and her husband returned to South Africa, where they have adopted twin sons, Noah and Jonah. In Johannesburg they have opened Under The Son Nursery School (www.undertheson.co.za) , enrolling babies (6 weeks) to 5 years, of which 40% are adopted. The care and education (Learning through Play approach) are important, but the ministry aspect is fundamental. She also delivers Early Years training to teachers and parents in impoverished areas, is a key note speaker, article writer for the sector, and is the Africa representative for The Early Years Alliance in London.
