- Claude Rains was offered Klaatu but was tied up on Broadway. Zanuck pushed for Spencer Tracy; Wise argued a famous face would sink the illusion, and the little-known Michael Rennie got the only leading role Fox ever gave him.
- Rennie kept his arms dead at his sides unless walking in full stride, a deliberate choice meant to read as not quite human.
- Patricia Neal assumed she was making a trashy flying-saucer picture and had trouble getting through "Klaatu barada nikto" with a straight face. She later called it the best science fiction film ever made.
- Gort was Lock Martin, a seven-foot-seven usher from Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Too frail to lift anyone, he carried look-alike dummies, and three suits were built so the lacing stayed hidden from any angle.
- The spaceship was wood, wire and plaster of Paris. Putty packed the door seam so the opening appeared out of nowhere, and the ramp closing is that footage run in reverse.
- No principal cast member ever traveled to Washington. The Lincoln Memorial and Arlington scenes were played against second-unit background plates.
- The equations on Barnhardt's blackboard are real, worked out by UCLA astrophysicist Samuel Herrick from the three-body problem.
- The Defense Department read the script and declined to cooperate with a film showing the Army firing on a peaceful visitor.
- North wrote the Christ parallels in privately: the borrowed name Carpenter, the message for all mankind, the death at the hands of authority, the return, the ascent. Censor Joseph Breen forced in the line reserving such power to the Almighty Spirit, over the objections of both writer and director.
- Herrmann used two theremins, two Hammond organs, four tubas, overdubbing and tape reversal, and fixed the sound of science fiction for a generation. Danny Elfman credits it with making him want to compose.
- North said "Klaatu barada nikto" simply sounded good. Wise closed his 1997 AFI Lifetime Achievement speech with it.

Ray Bolger swapped roles with Buddy Ebsen to play the Scarecrow; Ebsen's Tin Man aluminum-dust makeup poisoned his lungs and he was hospitalized and recast without explanation — his voice survives in the group vocals of “We're Off to See the Wizard.”
W.C. Fields turned down the Wizard over pay; Frank Morgan took it. Gale Sondergaard, cast as a glamorous Witch, dropped out when the role became the familiar green hag, and Margaret Hamilton stepped in.
Five directors touched the film: Richard Thorpe (fired for rushing scenes, and for giving Garland a blonde wig and baby-doll makeup), George Cukor (briefly reset her look), Victor Fleming (left to rescue Gone with the Wind), and King Vidor (uncredited, shot the last ten days — including “Over the Rainbow”).
Margaret Hamilton suffered second- and third-degree burns when a fire effect misfired; her stunt double, Betty Danko, was later injured in a similar smoke-effect accident. Winged Monkey performers were hurt when their rigging wire snapped.
Bert Lahr's real-fur Lion costume weighed about 90 pounds and became a sauna under the lights; crew dried it out nightly. Garland reportedly found the ruby slippers painful and wore soft rehearsal shoes off-camera.
The tornado was a 35-foot muslin windsock with fuller's earth blown at it. The Tin Man's “steam” was talcum powder; his joint oil was chocolate syrup. The “horse of a different color” was colored with gelatin, filmed fast before it could belicked off.

Director Robert Aldrich took three planes, a train, and a mountain taxi to reach Olivia de Havilland in Switzerland, needing four days to talk her into replacing an ailing Joan Crawford.
Barbara Stanwyck and Loretta Young both turned the role down; Young said her horror-for-women objection wouldn't change even if she were starving.
Davis leaked de Havilland's casting to the press before Aldrich could formally notify Crawford, who heard the news over the radio.
Davis installed Coca-Cola vending machines on set purely to needle Crawford, a longtime Pepsi board member — then had a Coke delivery truck driven through a shot for good measure.
On Crawford's last day of filming, the crew reportedly packed up and left her at the location with no ride back to her motel.
A $200,000 replica of the Hollis mansion was built on a Fox soundstage; exteriors were shot at Houmas House Plantation outside Baton Rouge, where tour guides still point out Davis's bedroom.
With no time to alter her wardrobe, several of de Havilland's costumes — including a Christian Dior gown — came straight from her own closet.
Crawford's brief cameo survives anyway: she's glimpsed for two seconds in a taxi's back seat before the footage cuts to de Havilland.
The title came from the theme song's lyrics after Davis vetoed the original title for sounding too close to Baby Jane; Patti Page's recording became a million-selling top-10 hit.

Charles Laughton, Ralph Richardson, Noel Coward, Spencer Tracy, and Laurence Olivier were all considered for Nicholson before Alec Guinness — who turned it down at least once himself.

Two broke drifters, Dobbs and Curtin, team with old prospector Howard to dig for gold in Mexico’s SierraMadre. As the gold piles up, Dobbs’s paranoia curdles into obsession, and the mountains take back what they gave.
Huston read Traven’s novel in 1935 and spent 12 yearsgetting it made, finally using the clout from The Maltese Falcon (1941).
George Raft, Edward G. Robinson, and John Garfield wereearly casting ideas; Bogart badgered Huston for the role of Dobbs.
Reclusive author B. Traven sent “technical advisor” HalCroves to set; cast and crew widely believed Croves was Traven himself, thoughhe denied it for life.
Walter Huston performed without his false teeth on hisson’s instruction and learned his Spanish lines phonetically. His famous jig was unscripted — his own idea, learned years earlier from playwright Eugene O’Neill.
Bogart told a critic before filming, “I play the worstshit you ever saw.” He wore a wig the whole shoot to hide hair loss from hormone treatments and heavy drinking.
Huston and Bogart pranked Alfonso Bedoya by gluing hissaddle before lunch, and rigged a mousetrap under a rock Bogart had to reachbeneath.
The shoot ran in Mexico for 5.5 months, 29 days overschedule, and was briefly shut down after a bribery dispute with a local newspaper editor — who was later shot by a jealous husband.
The film won three Oscars: Best Director and BestAdapted Screenplay (John Huston) and Best Supporting Actor (Walter Huston) — the first father/son Oscar wins for the same film.
Bogart’s performance was never nominated for BestActor; the film lost Best Picture to Hamlet.
The famous “Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!”line is a misquote — that exact phrasing was never spoken on screen.

The Source Material
Christie's novel was first published in 1939. By the 1970s, And Then There Were None became the preferred title worldwide. She called it the most difficult of her novels to write: the killer had to be one of ten people — yet all ten had to die. The 1945 film follows Christie's 1943 stage adaptation, in which two characters survive — unlike the novel's bleak ending.
Emily Brent's line "Those whom the gods would destroy..." draws on the Greek dramatist Euripides; her other quotation, "The wicked flee..." is from the Book of Proverbs.
Several character names were altered from the source, partly to satisfy 1945 censorship codes.
Production & Behind the Scenes
Directed by René Clair, a French filmmaker working in Hollywood during WWII, the film was effectively his Hollywood farewell. It won the Golden Leopard and Best Direction Award at the 1946 Locarno Film Festival. The score, by Italian-Jewish composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, has an unusual chamber-music quality beneath the suspense. The film's copyright later lapsed; it is now in the public domain, with a 4K remaster available free on YouTube.
The film was released October 30, 1945 — the day before Halloween. The timing appears deliberate.
The opening five minutes contain no dialogue — the island setting is established entirely through visuals and music.
Asbestos created the Witch's broomstick flame and the poppy-field “snow.”
MGM nearly cut “Over the Rainbow” as too slow and sophisticated for children; it went on to win the Oscar.
The film lost money on its 1939 release and didn't turn a profit until a 1949 re-issue. Its 1956 TV premiere drew a 53% audience share and helped make it, per the Library of Congress, the most-viewed film in history.
Van Dyke skipped retakes when he liked a first take,believing actors "lose their fire" through repetition — Powell and Loy often had to nail new material cold.
Nick, Nora, and AstaAsta was played by a trained dog actor named Skippy,who worked for a promised squeaky mouse and a biscuit and wasn't allowed to interact with the cast between takes.
By Myrna Loy's own account, Skippy bit her at somepoint during filming.
The Christmas-tree ornament-shooting gag started as Powell fooling around with a prop air rifle between takes; Van Dyke worked it into the finished film.
Loy performed her own pratfall tripping while carryingthe dog and an armful of presents — no stunt double.
Nick's line "Here's that man again" is a play on "Here's that band again," the catchphrase opening Dick Jurgens'spopular radio broadcasts.
Ripped from Real Life Lieutenant Guild's question about the "Sullivan Act" references a real 1911 New York gun-control law; Nora's reply nods to the 1910 Mann Act.
MGM flagged several lines as potentially "censorable" before release, though the film was still approved in 1934.
The film hit theaters in May 1934, just months after Prohibition ended, letting its drinking jokes play as pure escapism rather than the grittier, illicit backdrop of Hammett's Prohibition-era novel.
Costumer Dolly Tree worked entirely in black-and-whitecontrast, since Technicolor wasn't part of the equation.
Legacy & Afterlife Added to the National Film Registry in 1997; ranked #32on AFI's 100 funniest American films.
Roger Ebert added it to his "Great Movies" collection, and Akira Kurosawa later named it among his favorite films.

Spoilers The murderer is Herbert MacCaulay, Wynant's own lawyer,who killed him and forged letters to keep up the pretense he was still alive.

Cinematographer Jack Hildyard lashed himself to the wing of a transport plane to shoot the paratrooper jump on a handheld 16mm camera.
David Lean nearly drowned in a river current during filming; actor Geoffrey Horne pulled him out. An assistant director was later killed in a car accident traveling to a location.
Guinness based his famous stumbling walk from the punishment box on his own son's gait while recovering from polio, later calling it the finest work of his career. His name was even misspelled with one "n" in the original credits.
Sessue Hayakawa, 68 at the time, kept only the script pages with his own lines and tore out the rest — he never had a full picture of how Saito's story ended.
Pierre Boulle also wrote the novel behind Planet of the Apes (1968) — two very different screen classics from the same author.
The real river the historic bridge crossed was the Mae Klong; it was later renamed the Khwae Yai, largely because of the film's fame.

The Cast
Two cast members had won Academy Awards at filming: Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston. Judith Anderson, best known as Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca (1940), plays the severe Emily Brent. C. Aubrey Smith, 82 at filming, died the following year, making this one of his final appearances.
Mischa Auer, cast as the first to die, was primarily known for screwball comedies — deliberate misdirection for audiences expecting him to last longer.
Queenie Leonard, who played Ethel Rogers, was the last surviving cast member, dying January 17, 2002, at age 96.
June Duprez, Louis Hayward, and Richard Haydn all died within six months of each other in 1984–85.

The New York Times praised Clair's "light macabre touch." Variety called it a "dull whodunit." Leonard Maltin awarded four stars; Rotten Tomatoes holds it at 100% from 12 reviews. Christie's novel has sold more than 100 million copies and is widely cited as the world's best-selling mystery novel.
The film's first documented TV broadcast was July 23, 1951, on Chevrolet Movie Time on KRON in San Francisco.
Later remakes — 1965, 1974, 1987, 1989, and a 2015 BBC miniseries — all used a revised ending; none restored the novel's original bleak conclusion.
