The Disney era of Star Wars has seen an explosion of on-screen content, including a new trilogy, a whole bevy of live-action shows, and animated shows for a wide range of viewers. Add to this a proliferation of a whole new universe of paper canon stories for multiple ages, culminating (so far) in the long-running and highly cumulative High Republic initiative. All these stories aim to both bring in new fans and warm the hearts of long-time lore-seekers, but that balance continues to be a notoriously difficult tightrope to walk. Moreover, shows, books and comics are targeted for younger audiences, some – like the grippingly complex Andor – are clearly meant for more-educated adults, and others seek to hit the bullseye of appealing to everyone. This week we address both the empirical and normative: how widely accessible have Star Wars stories been thus far, and how accessible should they be?

“Fandom” is a tricky and amorphous concept. We have ideas of what it means, but those might be contradictory or at least distinct. The concept of a “Star Wars fan” raises fascinating questions since our fandom contains many groups within it, partly based on age, gender or other demographics. In a franchise spanning (real world) 48 years and (in-universe) multiple centuries, there are many pockets of groups preferring one era over another, and sometimes one era at the expense of another. The Disney takeover in 2014 brought a brand new era of novels, comics and short stories, as well as films, live action and animated shows (including a new animated show literally this morning!) This fresh start promised an incredibly bold ideal: a fully-integrated and continuous canon across all media. This allowed it to hit the reset button for the Sequel Trilogy as well as opened up new possibilities for exploring the Prequel and Original eras and beyond. Maybe it was poignant that Chris Kempshall’s The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire came out on the Fourth of July, 2024. It might also be poetic that one of us (who can tell?) only just finished reading it a year into the current presidential administration. Of course, Kempshall is drawing on plenty of real-world examples of authoritarian regimes that have come and gone. It’s also important to remember that the implied author Beaumont Kin is as fictional as the Galactic Empire he is chronicling. That intersection of real-world history and fictional narrative makes for an incredibly fascinating book that is almost tailor-made for a podcast like ours. So it’s high time we dig into it, and this is the week we do just that!

George Lucas was very keen on the power of visual design in Star Wars. The best filmmakers, production designers, comic book artists, video game illustrators and overall storytellers have continued this strong sense of the “look” of the Galaxy Far, Far Away. This clearly includes the use of symbols, be it of factions, movements, institutions and people: how those visual identities impact characters in-universe, and impact us real-world folks who are familiar with them. Of course, the work that symbols do in Star Wars comes straight from that same work of symbolism in our own everyday life, and how we associate these symbols with our own societies, countries, organizations and people – how we think and feel about them. This week we close off the year with a look at the power of visual identity in Star Wars and our own world.

Starting with Mask of Fear and ending with Master of Evil, 2025 was a steady parade of all-time Star Wars novels. The standalones were all brilliant, only to be outdone by the High Republic’s long-awaited finale, Trials of the Jedi. And since the Force moves in mysterious ways, it was a less significant year for streaming — notwithstanding Andor season two — and a very mixed and perplexing year for comics. That all served to make the novels stand out even more. With the year coming to a close, we look back on Star Wars stories from the last twelve months.

Claudia Gray of Team Luminous gave us this in Master & Apprentice: “Only through sacrifice of many Jedi will the Order cleanse the sin done to the nameless. The danger of the past is not past, but sleeps in an egg. When the egg cracks, it will threaten the galaxy entire. When the Force itself sickens, past and future must split and combine. A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored.” In Revenge of the Sith, Yoda reminds us just how slippery interpreting it can be: “A prophecy, misread could have been.” That didn’t stop Qui-Gon though: he was convinced Anakin was the one. We often consider the final act of characters such as Anakin Skywalker and Ben Solo in terms of “redemption.” Have their sacrifices made amends for the evils of Darth Vader and Kylo Ren? But the Abrahamic faith traditions give us another angle to interpret their stories: “repentance.” If redemption considers the destination, then repentance is about the journey, the process and moment of transformation out of darkness into the light. We’ll admit it: canon contradictions can sometimes be hard to swallow. Of course, screen stories have overwritten details on paper a few times, perhaps the most famous example being Caleb Dume’s experience of Order 66 in the opening moments of The Bad Batch. And what about when one paper story seems to go against another, like the apparent discrepancies between Alex Segura’s Battle of Jakku and Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath Trilogy? We all know that the real winner of the Clone Wars was one Sheev Palpatine aka Darth Sidious, at least from a narrative and character point of view. How about from an institutional perspective? One of the nicest things about an extended canon – be it in streaming shows or in books and comics – is that it gives creatives more time to flesh out and expand the characters and character beats of the films. This expansion is particularly notable for characters who only have bit parts on the big screen, but then find a new lease in life in other media. For some of these examples, it's the fan reaction to a character or even a character design that prompts both creatives and executives to give these characters more time in the sun, reminding us that the stories that Lucasfilm tells and the support (financial and otherwise) that fans give to those stories are in a symbiotic, chicken-and-egg relationship. This week we look at some major characters that had a surprisingly small amount of screen time when we first met them.

It's a moon! It's a starship! It's a podcast network! Ok in this case it's none of these…. The criminal underworld forms a vital part of Star Wars storytelling, especially for characters who want to, or could stand to, get their hands a little dirty. It challenges the narratives of order and security in a galaxy full of institutions that bank on those very narratives–literally and otherwise. More profoundly, it traces its own mythic origins to Campbell and behind him, the Hades of Greco-Roman imagination. It's therefore the essential first step in the hero’s journey out past the confines of everyday life with its familiar comforts of routines, practices and people. This week we truly go down to the lower levels, to the underworld.

San Diego Comic-Con culminated in its first-ever appearance by The Maker himself, George Lucas. He was joined by Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro and longtime Star Wars designer Doug Chiang to introduce the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, set to open next year. In the Hall H panel, they described the “why” of the museum, which led to a moving and profound exploration on the meaning and power of art in our social and cultural consciousness.
