| How This One Thing Creates Opportunity Every Time w/ Dr. Karen Litzy | #016 | 19 Jun 2018 | 00:51:36 | |
Dr. Karen Litzy is a physical therapist, successful podcast host, and owner/operator of a concierge Physical Therapy business in New York City, where she treats patients in their homes or work place.
In this episode, Joel chats with Dr. Karen about panic attacks, podcasts, and program creation. And how she’s leveraged existing assets to build an entrepreneurial empire that flourished from taking risks and building relationships. Episode Discussions
[4:49] Starting line: Karen left her job at a hospital and moved from Pennsylvania to NYC to live with a girlfriend because she ‘thought it'd be fun.’
[6:19] Entrepreneurial bug: She couldn't find a physical therapy job she liked so she took a job as a personal trainer and it ignited her entrepreneurial spirit.
[7:21] For a year, she worked full time at a gym, building relationships and making connections.
[11:19] First client: Karen was working at an outpatient clinic when someone from the gym sent her a referral who became her first concierge client.
[13:47] "It was the sheer exhaustion of working too many hours a week that prompted me to say, 'you know, I think I've had enough."
[15:05] As she worked part time at a friend's clinic, she started seeing more side clients.
[15:46] "I had a full-on panic attack when I decided to let go of those 8 hours and do this whole thing on my own."
[16:50] Continuing education: Karen read business books, took Marie Forleo's B-School, and asked her CEO clients for business advice.
[17:57] One piece of advertising advice from a client that produced over 20 new clients.
[20:32] Accepting help: "Your current clients are your biggest advocates and if you're not leveraging them, there's definitely lost opportunity there."
[21:12] If you try to do it all, it'll keep you small.
[22:39] Pivoting into program creation: The same questions kept cycling in her social media groups and emails so Karen put herself out there and started helping.
[26:43] Seeing opportunity: 65% of physical therapists are women but there are very few women teaching them how to be successful entrepreneurs.
[29:52] Business idea validation: An online program Karen launched 3 years ago successfully helped people grow their businesses.
[32:12] Growing a following: Karen's audience comes from a podcast she launched in 2011 and a large social media presence.
[39:28] "It's been fun. If anyone ever said to me even in 2016 that this is where I'd be now, I'd say you're crazy."
[40:08] The pitch that avalanched more speaking gigs.
[43:01] Being honest and vulnerable allows you to create deep relationships and open doors.
[46:25] "Say yes to as much as you can until you have the luxury to say no."

[4:44] Starting line: She worked as a master trainer for gyms throughout NYC while earning her bachelors in psychology and health education.
[6:14] Bodyweight movement and functional exercises are Stacey's specialty, influenced by her background in martial arts.
[7:02] "I think that I like to get people to that point of realizing they can do a lot more than they think they can...it extends beyond just the physical." [9:20] Seeing opportunity: After observing two major groups of gym-goers, she knew there was a better way to approach fitness.
[10:14] Genesis of Stacy's Bootcamp: In 1999, she trained a few one-on-one clients in various parks and distributed business cards to curious onlookers. Stacy’s Bootcamp was born.
[12:05] Building relationships: Stacy's Bootcamp evolved from a business into a network and community.
[13:15] Major shift: Because it was new and one of the first boutique fitness classes in the country, Stacy got a lot of press coverage.
[14:08] Organic growth: Her class grew with zero advertising. Just referral, word of mouth, and media coverage.
[14:59] At a standstill: After 15 years, Stacy felt stagnant as an entrepreneur and a professional. "I felt it some ways like [Stacy's Bootcamp] was killing my soul."
[17:12] Knowing when to pivot: She wanted to explore other components of health than physical exercise and went back to school in 2014 for her doctorate in natural medicine.
[18:28] Transitioning into nutrition: Stacey's System came from part professional observation and part personal need.
[22:11] Starting a supplement company: "I would completely say it was scary as f*ck!"
[23:14] Shell-shocked: For 6 months, Stacy didn't know how to define herself. All she had was a belief in herself and a passion for the product.
[24:33] Leveraging connections: Her opportunities emerged from relationships established in her boot camp. "It was all very organic. I found the right people at the right time and they introduced me to the right people at the right time."
[28:54] Quantum university teaches explains “woo-woo” practices through a scientific lens.
[30:20] Opportunities in education: Going back to school helped establish brand credibility and trust. People are more willing to listen and buy in.
[32:21] Going to school to learn about quantum physics and starting a business —that sounds hellish. "It was! At certain points, I was like, 'what am I doing?!"
[33:07] At a meditation retreat, Stacy’s back completely released and never hurt again.
[35:30] Overcoming hurdles: Hiring relatives and mental breakdowns.
[39:53] Leveraging expertise: Love Yourself Naked: The Science of Self Perception, Spirituality, and Weight Loss is Stacey’s book in the works.
[41:52] Underlying goal: "Get women to recognize they're pretty awesome people and go forward in life as the badass goddesses they are."
[44:13] Key entrepreneurial trait: we never stop learning.
[47:14] Stacy's #1 piece of advice you probably need to read: “Just go for it. If you waited until everything is in line, you'll probably never make it.”

[22:27] What goes into directing a TEDx talk and Tricia’s process when working with speakers and actors. Create a safe space - so they can become vulnerable and deliver an authentic message.
[24:40] Tricia's first TEDx speaker was Petra Kolber and her talk was "The Perfection Detox."
[26:21] TEDx opportunities: Giving a TEDx talk earns you immediate credibility and opens doors to future speaking gigs.
[27:54] TEDxLincolnSquare's origin story: Tricia went back to directing her own shows and didn't think she'd continue working with speakers.
[28:59] Starting a podcast: To help her build an online presence, she hired a visibility strategist who connected her with John Lee Dumas. He encouraged her to start a podcast and The Big Talk was born.
[30:06] Becoming an expert: On the podcast, Tricia interviewed 15 TEDx organizers about what it means to be an organizer. She attracted speakers who were interested in giving a TEDx talk. [31:30] "So that's how I became a TEDx organizer...I needed a place to put my speakers." [33:05] Leveraging exhaustion: She’s able to extract the big idea from her clients after a rigorous 2-hour active listening session.
[36:43] Leadership is everything: "If I can't hear what you're saying as a director, I will not be able to direct you in a way where that scene is completely truthful." [37:49] "What I've noticed over the course of the past 8 years of working with entrepreneurs and experts is people don't realize what their own superpower is. They think it's one thing but it's really something different."
[39:04] Bringing talks to life: The Blueprint session involves 3 x 5 notecards and gives the speaker clarity on their true message.
[41:42] What’s next for Tricia: Creating a masterclass series called The Fearless Speaker coming fall 2018, season 9 of The Big Talk, and opening applications for TEDxLincolnSquare in September 2018.

| Seeing the Light No Matter What - Even When You're Facing Repossession w/ David Schloss | #012 | 22 May 2018 | 00:55:24 | |
No one is exempt from the growing pains of starting and running a business. No matter how much you’ve got it made. Some of us even hit rock bottom. More than once. Ironically, those experiences are the chisel that shapes rocks into rockstars.
In this episode, we spotlight David Schloss, owner and operator of Convert ROI — a multi-million-dollar advertising agency specializing in social advertising. He shares an inspiring journey full of entrepreneurial ebbs and flows including his near bout with bankruptcy, and the fateful Google search that started it all. Good luck walking away from this episode without feeling like you can move mountains. Episode Topics
[7:49] First sale: Six months later, he launched an affiliate site and signed up for Clickbank. He made his 1st sale after 90 days. His goal was $3k/mo.
[12:18] He purchased and reviewed 50 products from Warrior Forum over 9 months.
[15:56] “When I made that commission sale it was like the beginning of this newfound addiction.”
[17:38] 10xing: Built a gigantic network of 10-page websites using the same framework.
[18:49] Gaining momentum: At age 19, he had 50 domains on a massive dedicated server and was making $2,200/mo.
[19:34] Discovering passion: "I felt like I was becoming an engineer because I was having to constantly coordinate stuff and figure out where it came from, but it was fun. And that's when I noticed, 'Wow I'm really passionate about this stuff."
[21:39] Local networking: He mentioned he ranked websites to another member at a club meeting, eventually landing him his first client. “All I had to do was put it out there."
[22:50] First Client: David got his client’s video ranked locally at #2 within 5 days. That became David’s 1st case study and repeat client at $750/month.
[26:22] He performed the exact same process for nearly a dozen others over a year.
[29:03] Pivot point #1: From 2008-2010, two people told David to get away from SEO and get into paid ads. He went all in.
[31:11] Growing pains: During his first few years doing FB Ads, his business fell apart twice because of his sales process and inability to communicate with clients.
[32:42] Hard times: His business lost sustainability so he got a job and worked 30 hours a week for 2 years.
[33:28] All or nothing: In 2014, business went down then up and stabilized. He quit his job and went all in with no savings.
[34:34] He still didn't know what he was doing wrong and was close to bankruptcy with zero clients.
[35:16] Rock bottom: “On Halloween of 2014, I just remember sitting on the floor, crying my eyes out thinking ‘wow I can't even afford buying candy for kids ‘cos I have nothing.” David was 7 days away from having his car repossessed and being evicted.
[35:52] Pivot point #2: On 11/1/14, he sent a message to all 750 of his Facebook friends offering to audit their ads in exchange for one piece of advice. He did 77 audits in 3 days—7 of them became $1500/month clients.
[38:07] Perfect pitch: “It was the starting point of me believing in myself because then I was like ‘oh my god, I figured it out. I know what I need to say!”
[40:46] "There's so much opportunity sitting literally within your immediate circle that if you just ask, you'd be surprised at the results you'd get."
[42:20] Expert's Corner: David on Discovering and Reaching Your Potential
[43:53] For those struggling: “It’s OK. It's part of the process. Trust the process and keep doing what you need to do because eventually you'll break through and you'll get exactly what you want.”
[44:28] How David successfully rebranded his agency and himself.
[44:55] How he got the idea to do a case study a month including one in late 2017 that lead to hundreds of people contacting him.
[48:24] Challenge, discomfort, growth: The more David put himself in massively uncomfortable situations, the more his business grew.
[50:16] Finding your passion and vision as a service provider.
[52:06] Why mindset and personal development as an entrepreneur is important: “…Because you're gonna go through some crazy sh*t."

| From Selling Wristbands to Being Backed By Multi-Billion Investors w/ Nathan Resnick | #011 | 15 May 2018 | 00:38:44 | |
Nathan Resnick went from selling Livestrong bracelets in middle school to founding Sourcify —the fastest growing B2B sourcing platform backed by Y Combinator. He started Sourcify a year ago and has since helped thousands of different companies bring their products to life.
In this episode, Nathan reveals how to spot opportunity in creating and sourcing products as well as what it takes to make it as a product-based business. Episode Topics
[4:41] Starting line: In middle school, Nathan noticed the Livestrong bracelet trend and realized he could buy them in bulk online. He resold them to his friends for a "pretty good margin."
[9:05] Evolving Entrepreneur: Early in high school, he made money sneaker hunting for his friends.
[10:53] During his junior year, he spent a year in China as a foreign exchange student. He’d go to local markets and purchase runoff units at a steep discount then resell them online for a "very hefty" margin.
[13:14] Bitten by the bug: Nathan saw how products were produced on the ground floor. "As that dynamic grew, I always wanted to create my own product and felt the urge to. I didn't wanna sell someone else's product."
[13:30] First invention: In college, he invented the 1st leather watch strap without holes and grew it to a 6-figure store on Shopify the 1st year. As the company grew, he attracted media outlets like Huffington Post and Entrepreneur.
[14:56] Seeing and solving a problem: After people started asking how he produced products overseas faster and more effectively, "We realized there was a huge opportunity to create a platform that would streamline that manufacturing process." Sourcify was born.
[18:40] There has to have been a problem on the manufacturing side...?
[19:45] Seeing opportunity: How Nathan discovered that low-quality leads were a problem for manufacturers.
[22:15] First-hand experience: What it's like applying to Y Combinator...and getting accepted!
[27:26] Winning business model: "There's obviously a lot of ways to manufacture products...but our approach is different and our mindset behind what we do is a lot different — and that's what sets us apart."
[30:54] "It took Dropbox 11 years to go public. A lot of these billion-dollar companies that people think happened overnight happen actually over 10+ years."
[31:13] Growth strategy: Sourcify's growth is fueled by providing value through content marketing (webinars, blogs) and SEO.
[33:05] Single out the most impactful experience you had that lead to your Sourcify success: “People talk about passion, determination, and motivation but if you don't have the ability to get back up when someone says no to you, then you're not gonna be successful."
[34:50] Points of conflict: “You have to be excited about what you're doing or you won't be as determined to work as hard.”

| How to Leverage Strategic Partners to Sell An 8-Figure Expert Business w/ Sohail Khan | #09 | 01 May 2018 | 00:38:15 | |
Sohail Khan has a lot to be proud of. Like his title as the world’s top joint venture expert or leveraging his expertise — and possibly his accent — to close a $1.5 million joint venture in 30 days. But the opportunity he’s most proud of seizing to date? Seeing the opportunities themselves.
In this episode, Sohail Kahn breaks down the one strategy he’s used again and again to launch and sell 6, 7, and 8-figure businesses. Listen as his journey confirms it’s possible to cultivate a successful business by viewing connections and partnerships through opportunity-colored lenses. Episode Topics
[3:55] Starting line: From 1998-2000, while Sohail was an internet marketing consultant, he created a one-page website that sold Microsoft tutorial courses to build credibility with his clients.
[5:01] One of those clients was QVC who paid $15K-$30K per project.
[5:25] The crash: During Y2K, the dotcom bubble burst forcing the agency to shut down. Focus shifted to the small computer training website that continued generating consistent revenue.
[5:55] Inspired expert: Sohail credits Jay Abraham's Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got with inspiring him to become a JV expert.
[7:17] Attracting JV partnerships: "I showed companies how to make money from the internet and not just content. I think that's what really did it."
[8:40] Establishing expertise: In 2014, he co-wrote the book, Guerrilla Marketing and Joint Ventures which boosted his corporate credibility.
[10:10] Smart scaling: How Sohail scaled a small computer website from $70K to 7-figures using video-based training.
[11:35] Losing everything: "In 2008, I basically went from being a multimillionaire to being broke because the group that owned my computer video training company went bust."
[12:29] True grit: "I've been very successful in business. I could either pack and do something else or I could put my foot back in and try once more to get back on my feet…and that's exactly what I did."
[12:46] Million-dollar challenge: In 2009, Sohail challenged himself to make a million dollars in 12 months. He closed one deal in 30 days that made just over 1.5 million.
[14:19] 1st strategic alliance: In early 2000, he leveraged his training course stats to partner with an IT improvement agency. They’d promote his courses to 150K professionals for a percentage of sales.
[15:15] Lightbulb moment #1: Sales increased from $80K to $400K — pursuing joint venture opportunities was a no-brainer.
[15:42] How important are stats to potential partners? Or is it possible to do is brand new?
[17:41] Seizing opportunity: How Sohail launched a brand-new company in Dubai with zero knowledge of the marketspace or industry— and sold it to a competitor for 6 figures.
[21:28] “Entrepreneurs make it so difficult to monetize, especially in the expert space...You have assets at your fingertips that people will pay you for. If you can figure out how to piece it together, you're gold."
[22:19] Killer exit strategy: Sohail's strategy has always been to partner with potential competitors in the market as well as potential acquirers.
[23:58] How do you build an asset from your expertise you can sell?
[27:20] Impact & legacy: Sohail’s current focus is mentoring high high-level clients, equity consulting for his kids, and establishing his own foundation at the end of 2018 to give back.
[29:38] Mindset pivot: When I went from being worth $50 million to zero, that's when my whole mindset changed. It taught me to be fearless. ‘Give first, ask later,’ ‘what would you do if you knew you would never fail?’…That is the way I do business.
[30:05] Leveraging language: "90% of my work is US based so it's the place where I do really really well and — must be the accent possibly..."
[30:42] Don't collect material possessions. Collect experiences.
[31:42] What is the single biggest opportunity you're most proud of to date? Seeing the opportunity.

[8:01] Realizing potential: Began working with couples as a postpartum doula — coaching them through high-intensity moments.
[9:22] "The intensity of how comfortable I can be living in the unknown, flying blind, living by my vision without anybody else paving the path ahead of me. I'm paving my own path. That's kind of what birth is."

[20:53] Continued education: With the support of Math for America, Marla earned a national board certification and taught math and Pedagogy to teachers across the US.
[22:17] Seeing opportunity: "I was hired initially at a school with a principal who was very open to me developing programs, so I did a lot of project-based learning." [22:58] Honoring entrepreneur spirit: Marla's methods were recognized by a man who helped with project-based learning around the country. He trained her personally —leading to more opportunities.
[24:17] Earning client trust: "You'll never get hired as a doula or anybody who's really gonna help someone through something intimate unless people trust you...People tend to feel very safe with me."
[29:18] Entrepreneur’s intuition: Felt the pull to coach couples full time and hired a high-level entrepreneur business money mindset coach.
[31:06] Shifting into expertise: “[My coach] did for me what I'd been doing for others all these years which was to help me see, 'Oh, I can believe in myself as much as I can believe in others."
[32:35] Same skills, different format: Marla applied the same skillset as a doula to working with entrepreneur couples.
[36:56] Opportunity seeker at heart: "I don't believe in fixed incomes...there's always more you can do to uplevel if you're not happy with how much money you're bringing in."
[37:25] Opportunity everywhere: A man made conversation with Marla on a plane. He was the president of CBS in LA and offered to have her on a show.
[38:03] First client connection: Marla compares her first paying clients as a doula to her first clients as a relationship expert.
[40:54] Channeling energy: "I'm just a vessel here. I get myself out of the way more and more so [energy] can easily and effortlessly really channel through me so people get results."
“You have to not be looking for opportunities to really miss them.”

| 8-Figures in 6 Months - How to Become A Machine With Jen Kem | #07 | 17 Apr 2018 | 00:56:56 | |
Good opportunists have the self-awareness to identify their superpower. They put forth extra effort to create opportunity. But self-identifying our expertise is no easy feat. Most of us are quick to eclipse our own abilities— the ones others find extraordinary.
Jen Kem unleashes her expert straight from her Hawaii home, where she currently runs multiple successful businesses. In this episode, we learn how she spotted opportunity at an airport that lead to an 8-figure business within 6 months. And how she left a fortune 500 company only to turn around and make them her biggest consulting client —all by leveraging the skills in her toolbox. Episode Topics
[5:24] Starting line: Jen was a successful Verizon executive in charge of a billion-dollar budget making $400K/yr.
[6:40] Secret to success: "I was the gal who’d always take the crappiest projects on purpose...I love a challenge. It fed that motivator for me and... gets you noticed inside of a company."
[7:11] Values violation: In 2005, she discovered her counterpart made $100K more than her. "It offended every part of my value system."
[8:00] Quitting without burning bridges: After Verizon failed to match Jen's salary, she realized she had no autonomy and created a 9-month exit plan.
[9:31] "If you live in your values then it's hard to go wrong. It's hard to go wrong if you pair that with the massive action you have to live in those values."
[11:19] Seeing opportunity: While forming her 9-month exit plan, Jen flew frequently and made it a point to keep her eyes open for opportunity.
[12:15] Lightbulb moment #1: At the airport, she noticed women disembarking toting pink Victoria's Secret bags. At the time, Hawaii was sans undergarment shop for women.
[13:18] Leveraging corporate skills: Had no retail background but knew how to bring products to market, how to launch, brand, and PNL a product.
[14:16] Purple Cow style: Jen opened up the first women's undergarments boutique in Hawaii.
[15:53] Making sacrifices: She sold her house to fund the business.
[16:25] Business 101: "The minute I opened my doors, I could not keep one piece of anything in stock."
[17:21] Serendipitous opportunity: Oprah Winfrey ran a special on underwear the same year Jen went to market. The boutique made her a millionaire in 6-12 months.
[18:57] Overwhelmed and underprepared: Panic attacks ensued because the growth was difficult to control.
[20:36] Connecting the dots: Applying corporate world expertise to the retail world.
[22:12] Networking and relationships: Making strategic connections as a high-end product-based business.
[26:18] When you launched, did you even think this was 8-figure potential within 12 months? Absolutely not. It wasn't my goal.
[27:08] Drop from the top: At the pinnacle of her growth in 2008, the economy crashed. Shut down, liquidated, and claimed bankruptcy.
[29:52] Hitting rock bottom: Jen and her daughter moved in with her grandmother. "For 6 months, I stewed in my depression...being really mean to myself. 'How could you make this not work? You're smarter than that."
[31:22] Pivotal moment: "Mommy, it's time to wake up. You're Jen Kem. You know what to do."
[34:55] Applying lessons: Swore off retail and returned to a service-based business model. "I have mad respect for people in retail, especially small business owners."
[35:56] Lightbulb moment #2: "I could get Verizon to pay me $100K." Jen explains how she turned her previous employer into her first consulting client.
[41:06] Taking chances: She submitted a $100K, 6-month contract and because of her prior branding expertise, Verizon accepted.
[43:05] Self-made barriers: "If you're an expert in any area, you actually are so smart that you outsmart yourself and make it harder."
[43:43] Transcending Expert's Curse: “I could see things whenever I was inside a company but couldn't see it as well when I was trying to do it for myself."
[45:43] Identifying superpowers: “Thank you Joel, for this podcast that you have because I think what people don't realize is that they have gold inside of them."

| How a Kidnapped McDonald's Employee Became the #1 Authority in Every Industry By Age 29 w/ Rohan Sheth | #06 | 10 Apr 2018 | 00:46:37 | |
By the time he was 11, Rohan Sheth had seen 22 countries and enjoyed an arsenal of maids and drivers at his fingertips. He built 8 different businesses by age 29 and currently runs a successful digital marketing agency. Not a bad setup. Although there may have been a few wildcards sandwiched in between...
In this episode, Rohan guides you through his maze of entrepreneurial growth and transition — from wealth to working class, Hamburger University to high-ticket hustling, from the chopping block to top salesman. And how to earn your industry crown using self-confidence, instinct, and an open mind. Episode Topics
[3:58] Tough transitions: At age 11, Rohan moved from India to Canada after his family's successful travel agency was acquired.
[5:11] Bit by the bug: To match his comfortable childhood lifestyle, at age 15 he discovered dropshipping and made $175K selling pocket bikes at school.
[10:00] Devoted and promoted: From age 14-20, he worked his way up to manager at McDonald's.
[12:12] Trusting instincts: He wanted to be a commercial airline pilot but dropped out 9 months into the training program after realizing it wasn’t for him.
[16:11] "If nothing works out I'll just stick through riding out McDonald's...they were gonna push me into corporate and I'd already finished a lot of their business courses [at Hamburger University]."
[17:07] Lightbulb moment: One night after a bartending gig, he Googled the top 3 things to make money. After "hooking" and "drug dealing” was "sales."
[17:58] Raw ambition: “Next day I woke up and applied to every single sales job available on Craigslist … and just waited for someone to call me back."
[18:33] Taking the leap: Rohan walked away from a 6-figure career at McDonald’s in light of a gut feeling. "[Entrepreneurs] have this weird innate ability to 'figure it out' and that's awesome."
[21:53] Chopping block to top seller: His first day at a new sales job, a co-worker drove him out to the boondocks of Vancouver where he discovered he’d be selling gas door-to-door.
[27:12] Transition to high-ticket in-home selling: "I think I just got fed up with selling stuff that didn't have a comma in the middle of it. I've always been that person who wants to challenge myself. What's the next best thing I can get better at?"
[33:37] Skillset safety nets: "At the end of the day the one thing I always say is, 'If you know how to write copy and market or you know how to sell, you'll never have a problem putting food on the table."
[36:46] Seizing opportunity: In 2013, he became a digital marketing consultant to fill an obvious gap. "First client I took on was $500, the next time it was $1,000, the next time was $2,500 and it's just kinda been going up since then."
[37:33] Smooth scaling: By the latter part of 2015, he had 15 clients ranging $1K/mo to $2.5K + 10% of ad spend.
[37:59] In 2015, Rohan connected with an old co-worker who happened to be 'a traffic buying king' and gave him 50% of the agency — the same thriving agency they run today. [40:17] Is there anything you'd change about your journey? "I don't think I'd ever change anything because everything I did brought me one step closer to where I wanna be.” [41:01] Embracing the journey: "Everybody's journey is completely different and you just gotta take it and make the best of it. Some of the copy we can write from my stories is absolutely insane."
[41:39] Aspirations and goals: Currently, Rohan is busy coaching and speaking at events. He wants to sell the agency within the next 2 years and venture into the SaaS/app space with his business partner, Matt.
“I'm always gonna be in the digital world making a difference, helping entrepreneurs understand traffic, sales, and what it takes. “

Prepare for maximum action-taking inspiration and discover why AJ is officially EU Hall of Fame material. Episode Topics
[5:07] Fun fact: AJ performed a standup comedy routine to overcome his public speaking fear.
[7:03] Tragedy sparks an entrepreneurial fire: In 2007, doctors resuscitated AJ after pronouncing him dead. He then embarked on a major self-improvement journey that included changing career paths.
[9:10] Lightbulb moment #1: Implementing strategies from Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki changed his life.
[10:26] Making tough decisions: Insight from Brian Tracy's book Maximum Achievement inspired him to leave his secure teaching career and start his own business.
[12:04] Discovering expertise: After dabbling in infomarketing, AJ found his true passion serving others in the fitness industry. He rented space in a gym and evolved a personal training business.
[14:31] First client: A gym member requested AJ train him after witnessing his 60 lb. weight loss.
[16:27] Realizing potential: "Working with [my first client] made me realize how much I love helping people and I had a skill of inspiring people into taking action."
[17:11] "One of the best ways I found to attract potential clients to whatever you're selling is to show them how you were."
[20:29] Getting clients results: He chronicles his client's entire journey by taking before/after photos, capturing wins, and creating case studies from them.
[22:54] Hitting goals: After 6 weeks of getting clients and referrals, he hit his goal of $3K/month.
[24:49] "Make sure you deliver your service at the highest level. When you do that, you have nothing to worry about in terms of marketing."
[25:44] Burnout bout #1: His 1 on 1 training schedule maxed out. AJ never vacationed during his 10 years in business.
[27:45] Burnout bout #2: Made more per hour and worked less with group training sessions but exhaustion was still a factor.
[29:06] Lightbulb moment #2: "If I take my services online, I can leverage myself even further and develop more of an automated process so I don't have to trade hours for dollars."
[30:15] Investing in the dream: Hired an online fitness marketing coach for $5K (with a dash of apprehension). Week by week, AJ started gaining traction.
[33:28] Biggest rookie mistake: "I think that's one of the biggest mistakes I made when I started my business...I waited so long to hire a coach."
[35:21] Earning expertise People pay for results. Developing that instant solution takes time, practice, and honing of your own skill.
[35:47] Value perception: "As experts, if you want to be charging a good ticket for yourself, you better have invested in yourself so you can understand what value truly is."
[36:47] Self-investment payoff: You're a mirror of your actions. “If you’re coachable, invest in yourself, take action, and are a pleasure to work with, you'll attract those same people.”
[38:11] What do you think the single biggest thing was that allowed you to get inducted [to the HOF]? Going all in and learning how to get people to take action. That can apply to any industry. | Career Development, Prison, And Psych Evaluator Expertise w/ Dr. Ashley Hampton | #04 | 27 Mar 2018 | 00:53:46 | |
Getting into a new market isn't as difficult as you'd think. It's all about corresponding something in your past to solve a problem. Dr. Ashley Hampton began as a psychologist in the prison system until an injury changed her career trajectory. By keeping her mind as well as her eyes opened to opportunity, she was able to transmute her background into a six-figure solo practice in an unrelated field.
In this episode, learn how this former prison doc used her expertise to leverage and launch herself into one opportunity after another…after another. And how you can relate your previous experience and expertise and turn it into a thriving business. Episode Topics
[3:56] Starting line: Ashley has a bachelors in psychology and masters in family therapy that went unused before working as a school counselor. Went back to school and interned at a federal prison.
[6:38] #1 rule of experts: You have to really want to help people.
[7:15] Prison life: Worked in inpatient substance abuse at the prison. Ran groups, individual counseling, and taught social and communication skills. Turned in a 2-week notice and left.
[8:42] Finding a gap: She opened up her own practice in Alabama and did psych evaluations. Within 3 months, her calendar was booked. [9:30] Against all odds: "Apparently in psychology, you should go into a group practice. You can't do this by yourself. You should have all of these people working for you. I don't have anybody. It's just me." [9:57] Realizing potential: From prison to psych evals — Ashley's core skill was putting puzzle pieces together and helping people improve their quality of life.
[13:19] "It's very shocking to me —the skills you learn in psychology actually translate to business very well."
[19:03] Ashley didn't like leaving disability applicants without recommendations. "I just did it because I felt like it needed to be done."
[20:43] Within one year, her private practice was making 6 figures but to her, 'it was a little weird' working with people who were struggling.
[21:20] Savvy business decisions: After relocating, no-show rates climbed to 45%. Child Protective Services evaluations offered a lower no-show rate and more money.
[23:54] The commute: By working almost exclusively with CPS in 15 different counties, she's doubled her income and works 35-hour weeks.
[26:54] Business 101: "I get to listen to podcasts like this and improve my business knowledge while I'm driving to these places."
[28:12] How did you land your first client? "While I hadn't done a specific disability evaluation, I actually had done these evaluations in different areas."
[29:19] Seeing opportunity: A friend mentioned waiting 6 months for a disability psych evaluation. She applied and got the job by connecting her experience in career development and clinical evaluations.
[35:12] Monetizing expertise: People asked how Ashley's business operated sans admin team. After sharing her secrets, they asked why she wasn't charging.
[38:24] Finding purpose: She wants to help women realize they can run a successful business efficiently without working more hours.
[39:40] Building a coaching business (properly): Website's almost done and paperwork is signed. Time to learn marketing!
[41:36] Unleashing your expertise: Take a step back and reflect on 2 core questions…
[43:18] Driving force: “If I can teach people how to do this then I'm not just reaching the people I'm sitting across from. I'm teaching everybody they can reach by being more efficient."
[48:23] Entrepreneurial lesson: "You may go in thinking it's gonna look like ABC but you may get 3 different letters of the alphabet. It doesn't always have to be exactly what you envisioned for you to have the impact you wanna have."

| How To Do Business With Anyone w/ Nic Peterson | #03 | 22 Mar 2018 | 00:47:55 | |
They say niching has its perks. It’s more marketable and profitable. Although that may be true, entrepreneurs are full of ideas. And it’s through business they have most freedom to express themselves. No wonder picking one niche feels counterintuitive.
On the other side of niching, you’ll find Nic. Sure, they share the same first 3 letters but that’s where similarities end. Nic Peterson found a way to transform perpetual learning into success throughout multiple markets —just by staying two small steps ahead of his audience. Listen to Nic’s journey for all the empowerment you need to break the mold and pivot into profit. Episode Topics
[4:59] Starting line: During his Freshman year in college, Nic had plans to play football. He trained alongside NFL-bound athletes with Joe DeFranco in New Jersey.
[6:13] Realizing potential: His passion for football fizzled while his appreciation for the process of body building strengthened.
[10:18] Cut from the team: Nic was fired after staff noticed a drop in productivity —he’d been preoccupied trying to uncover what DeFranco knew that he didn’t.
[11:38] Right place, right time: He happened to be around when Joe DeFranco's Strong documentary was being filmed and grew a big following.
[17:01] Making connections: Offered half ownership of a gym and soon after opened his own.
[19:52] Innate talent: “I've partnered with Ph.D.'s, medical doctors...people that have a hard time meeting people where they're at. They recognize that it's an important skill and they don't have it.”
[21:39] Against all odds: Someone told him he'd ‘get eaten alive’ if he opened a gym in Vero Beach. So, he opened a gym in Vero Beach.
[22:33] “You need to learn how to communicate with people and influence them to do things or you’ll live your life in a gym bathroom with a train going by every 5 minutes.”
[23:00] Sleeping on his gym’s bathroom floor, Nic passed the time reading self-help books. “There was nothing to do but read and reflect.”
[26:38] Getting people to do what's best for them without telling them it's best for them.
[27:56] The Relentless program: Gives new perspective on what health and wellness really is.
[31:27] Raising prices and marketing: Initially, hourly sessions ranged from $15-$20. After watching other programs and industries and defining a value proposition, rates increased to $120/session.
34:02 Trust building: “People will pay for the peace of mind. If they got an answer from me or my staff, then they could take it to the bank.”
[36:27] The swelling tide raises all ships: “I know me trying to do something I'm not qualified to do doesn't help anybody. What is the best chance that everybody benefits?”
[38:23] Honing your craft: Master to the point of practical application and understand the fundamentals. “When you learn multiple disciplines, your BS meter is really sensitive!”
[39:02] Benefits of learning and mastering: “Things that don’t make sense become easier to detect.”
[42:01] Expert’s Corner: Determining what to learn and what not to learn Ask yourself:
[43:06] What Nic’s learning next: psychology “It's a stress reliever. It's so much easier to accept that people are the way they are than get pissed off and judge them and moralize about it.”

| How to Make the Easiest Sale in the World w/ Immy Tariq | #02 | 13 Mar 2018 | 00:53:46 | |
As a UK native, Immy Tariq was determined to pursue his childhood aspirations of thriving in America. He’d get there, but not before enduring multiple health scares, multimillion dollar loss, and the obstacles of starting from scratch as a foreigner. Today, he’s a booming SEO expert being interviewed by CNN and CNBC.
What ultimately lead to Immy’s entrepreneurial success in the land of opportunity was his eye for opportunity. They’re everywhere. Can you spot ‘em?
In the 2nd episode of Experts Unleashed, join Joel as he interviews Immy Tariq who unpacks one jaw-dropping entrepreneurial journey you have to hear to believe. Episode Topics
[3:06] Starting line: Immy lost both parents when he was 20. At 22, he left Harvard Medical school to pursue entrepreneurship.
[6:03] Seizing opportunity: At 12, he earned $12K in 10 months helping college students fix pirated music tracks (remember KaZaa?) and salvage data from their virus-infected computers.
[8:22] Through his tutoring business, he packaged an offer that guaranteed an A grade in 90 days and made £100/hr. ($138.54 USD).
[9:28] Financed a property flip with a $12K personal loan and made $100K in 90 days.
[12:27] "A lot of people don't realize that opportunity starts with family or friends."
[13:51] Funding the passion: Immy dreamt of moving to the US and attending Harvard Business school but needed $600K to do it. Out of pocket.
[17:05] Hail Mary’s: He invested in real estate with no experience and made millions in 18 months.
[17:49] Health scare: Dropped his business after developing an autoimmune disease. “I was so unhappy and depressed. They actually gave me a year to live.”
[18:35] Massive sacrifice: Lost $3M out of $5M to UK tax during his move to the US in 2015.
[22:52] Key takeaway: "Sometimes it's about stepping outside the comfort zone and taking that one risk because that one risk can change your entire life." [25:27] Pure grit: Couldn't use his good UK credit in the US. Without a visa, banks refused loans. Immy had no money-making opportunities or connections.
[27:39] Investing in a mentor: Hired Bob Proctor at $50K for 13 minutes a month.
[29:50] Investing in education: Per Bob's advice, Immy spent $50K on different courses that would teach him how to drive traffic to businesses. Including OMG Machine's SEO course ($8K).
[35:11] Lightbulb moment #1: He could help businesses get found on Google and began selling SEO services.
[37:32] Lightbulb moment #2: None of the courses or books mentioned the need to learn sales.
[38:00] Did it frustrate you how difficult it was to make money in America versus how much money you made in the UK? "It was really stressful. I ended up with the West Nile Virus after 5 months of being in the United States."
[39:00] "I had nothing to help me, unlike in the UK where I at least had connections. I had relationships I could rely on. I think that's one of the biggest advantages in life…Without any relationships, your backs against the wall."
[39:43] Innate talent: Immy gained momentum using his eye for the easiest sales.
[41:44] Immy on closing big deals:
[43:55] Scaling to 5-figure months: Using cold calls and email, he reached $10K within 3 months of landing his 1st gig.
[46:44] Experts Corner: Immy’s Entrepreneurial Success Tips
[48:00] “When you study the ultra-successful, you realize most everybody crashed hard… Very rarely do you see somebody just launch and go to the moon right out the gate.”
[49:49] Perseverance: “[Entrepreneurs] have a tendency to always get up regardless of how hard we get kicked down — and that's what's gonna define your success.”
