John Murphy recently retired after 25 years of service in the Marines and the intelligence community, but he makes no claim to being a combat veteran. Mindset:  We should all have a requisite level of cardio fitness, this can ward off hear disease and also preps us to deal with a physical fight or the ability to deal with the adrenalin dump and spiked heart rate we could experience in a life or death fight.  

Heart Rate Monitors and Basic Aerobic Fitness -

Max heart rate = 220 - your age ( This is only a rule of thumb, to know for sure have your doctor run a VO2 Max test).  In this case, Aaron and I are 48.  220 - 48 = 172 bpm 

YOUR INDIVIDUAL AEROBIC HEART RATE ZONE IS A HEART RATE BETWEEN 70% AND 80% OF YOUR MAX HEART RATE

Aerobic zone  for Aaron and I, 120 - 137 ish. This is an estimate and is a zone 

85-90% of max HR for anaerobic threshold:  For us that range is 146 - 154 bpm

As a comparison a 20 year old, Max HR = 200 and Aerobic threshold is 140-160 bpm and Anaerobic is 170- 180 bpm 

Erics basic. cardio workouts: 

Joel Jamisons Road Work 2.0. -  45 min to an hr of Aerobic work 

Basically choose any cardio modality and do 5-10 min in each modality for 45-1 Hr.  Bike, rower, treadmill, JiuJitsu Solo Drills, Shadow Boxing, Kettle Bells, Jump Rope...etc, etc. 

Basic Aerobic Threshold workout I do is 10 intervals of getting my hr to my Anaerobic threshold and then going all the way back down to 120 bpm and repeat.  Examples, sprint up hill, hit your Anaerobic Zone and stay in it for 20 sec, recover to 120 bpm, and repeat for 10-15 reps.

Kyle is a former Navy SEAL Sniper, member of DEVGRU and is a professional shooter teaching pistol, carbine and rifle to a new standard. As a Marine for over 20 years (12 active duty), the majority of his military career has been serving as a reconnaissance team leader. Cliff has done several deployments including both Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 & 1991. In 1992, Cliff again deployed, this time to Somalia. Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on all charges! John is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Modern Army Combatives under the "Father of Modern Combatives," Matt Larsen. He served as an assistant instructor to Matt Larsen for several years.  He now focuses on firearms and reality based simulation training.  

John taught for various organizations and units, providing training for service members, law enforcement, and everyday Americans. He began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2007 and has attended ~600 hours of formal training in firearms and combatives to go along with over a decade of active military service.

As a competitor, John is an international submission grappling medalist with experience in Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing, and competitive shooting. Additionally, John has been a concealed carry license holder since 2013 and has experience with various carry methods, equipment, and applications.

Lee Weems is the owner and operator of First Person Safety and is also staffed with Rangemaster LLC where he assist Tom Givens with their storied Instructor Development program. He has been a Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certified peace officer since 1999 having been sworn at the local, state, and federal levels and has served as a patrolman, field training officer, detective, supervisor, three terms as Chief Deputy, and currently as an agency training coordinator.  He served two terms as a member of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (GALEFI), and he teaches college classes in political science and criminal justice. He received the Distinguished Weapons Expert rating based on his scores in the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers' Firearms Instructor Training Program.  He is a Georgia POST certified general and firearms instructor and is a graduate of the FBI Police Firearms Instructor program and the FBI Law Enforcement Instructor School and has completed the Force Science Institute certification program as well as the FLETC Use of Force Instructor Training Program, Active Shooter Instructor Training Program, and the Basic Tactical Medical Instructor Training Program.  He also holds the Georgia POST Managerial, Supervisory, Field Training Officer, Advanced, and Senior Deputy certifications, and he has been recognized by GALEFI as a Master Firearms Instructor.

This show Eric and Aaron Davis start a new series of bonus shows where they talk Gear and Mindset.  We all love gear, in other words "Hardware," yet we know it's low on the priority list when we look at the hierarchy of surviving violent encounters.  That said we still love gear and know our audience loves gear as well.  We will primarily talk about gear that supports us on The Path but will reserve the right to simply talk about cool guns and knives as well.  Furthermore we will equally talk about ways to support building your mindset and gear that aids in this as well.  Ultimately it is mindset that is the most important "software."

This episode we welcome back Cecil Burch of Immediate Action Combatives for a third time!  Cecil holds the record for most appearances and said on the air that he would have to ensure that no one took his lead....hehe! -  We do an After Action Review of the Immediate Action Jiu-Jitsu and Pugilism seminar we hosted in Tulsa OK 16-18 July 2021.  The course was very transformative for all the students, frankly it had some of the same impactful learning experiences as Shivworks ECQC.  Eric and Aaron speak on some hard learned lessons they experienced during the weekend, lessons that audience members may learn from as well.  

Also a very important discussion was on the value of simulation and force on force training with simple blue guns.  We all loose sight of the fact that we do not have to use simunitions or UTM all the time to get value.  Blue gun work has 80-90 percent of the value and is way easier and cheeper to implement.

Mike Brown is a 22 year retired veteran of the Tulsa Police Department. This episode we invite Lieutenant Chris Lapre to the show. He is a SWAT Commander for Pinal Country Arizona Sherriff's department and runs Asymmetric Options. Drill of the week:  Carbine -  Easy week tightening up our carbine marksmanship.  At 50 or 100 yards, your choice, three position slow fire - 10 rounds slow fire for groups from Standing, Kneeling, and prone 30 rounds total.  Focus on getting your natural point of aim, eliminate muscling the position, and pressing the trigger at your respiratory pause.  There is no time limit, just 30 rounds of slow deliberate fire.

This episode we have legendary firearms instructor Tom Givens back on the show.  This is an AAR based on Eric's experience taking the Rangemaster Instructor Development and Certification Class in Casa Grande AZ hosted by Cecil Burch of Immediate Action Combatives.  Tom is a 25 year law enforcement veteran, has been teaching firearms in some fashion since the 1970s, and has been teaching full time for 24 years. He is a prolific author with 6 books and 100s of magazine articles for the industry leading magazines, and is a highly successful competitive shooter.  Tom was also one of the founders of the International Defense Pistol Association (IDPA).  He teaches how to shoot effective but also how to defend yourself with the mindset that it is not the odds its the stakes.  In this episode, Tom's lecture on violent crime statistics alone may save peoples lives by helping them understand that you have a much higher chance then the mainstream would have you believe.   In addition, Tom has had over 65 students defend themselves successfully with a firearm, as he says, that is a demonstrable set of evidence all of us can learn from.

4 strings of the Valor Ridge Rifle Standards, Credit Reid Henrichs:

On Valor Ridge target.  Can also use IDPA or the Rangemaster Q target (8 inch center) as well.

Each string starts with your safety on, this is a MUST. 

String 1 - 50 yards, start position standing at the ready, on the buzzer drop to  kneeling, fire 2 shots, then drop to prone and fire two more shots.  Par time 15 sec

String 2 - 25 yards from low ready, on the buzzer fire 6 rounds to the body in 10 sec.

String 3 - 15 yards at low ready, on the buzzer fire one round to the head in 3 sec - you will do this 5 times individually.

String 4 - 7 yards, on buzzer fire 2 to the body in 1.5 sec, you will does this string 3 times.

21 rounds total, you are allow 1 round out of either the head circle/triangle or 8 inch circle for a pass, all under par.

This week we welcome life changing leadership instructor JP Dinnell of Echelon Front on the show. JP is a former U.S. Navy SEAL and now a leadership instructor and speaker with Echelon Front, where he serves as Director of Tactical Training Programs. Jeremiah spent nearly a decade in the SEAL Teams with three combat deployments. Sent to the violent terrorist stronghold of Ar Ramadi, Iraq in 2006 with SEAL Team Three's Task Unit Bruiser, J.P. served as point man, machine gunner, and lead sniper for Delta Platoon opposite the American Sniper, Chris Kyle, in Charlie Platoon. This week we have the pleasure of bringing Kato Murakami on the show.  He is a 27+ year veteran police officer in the Chicago Land area and is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  His company Rectitude Training focuses on life saving training in combatives and weapons based grappling for Law Enforcement but also provides similar training to the civilian defender as well.  Kato discusses his thoughts on how improved training can help keep police officers alive and help them make better decisions with the tools they have or limiting the use of tools to begin with.  He has the philosophy of a modern samurai and has a work ethic in his own training that all of us should emulate.

This week we lost one of the most brilliant and impactful thinkers and instructors in the self-protection community, Dr. William Aprill. William was a member of the Shivworks Collective, and was owner of Aprill Risk Consulting, and was the community's pre-eminent mental health professional providing us the means to understand ourselves and the criminal mind. William will be deeply missed and will leave a void that will be impossible to fill. Our prayers are with him, his family, the Shivworks Collective and all that are impacted by his loss. Paul Sharp of Straight Blast Gym Illinois and Sharp Defense comes on the show to provide some additional much needed perspective on the current anti-police sentiment, the state of Law Enforcement and the current riots. EvoSec Drill of the week.  From 5 yards, 2 IDPA targets 3 feet apart.  String 1- Draw and fire 1 shot in T1 and one shot into T2.  Sting-2  Same drill except 2 shots on T1 and T2..  String 3- Repeat but with 3 shots on each T1 and T2.   Total up all three times, and add 1 sec added for any points down on the target.

This week we are blessed to have Marshal Chuck Haggard of Agile Training and Consulting on the show.  He is a 30 year veteran of both law enforcement and the military, and is a well-known subject matter expert in police use of force.  Chuck provides some much needed perspective and expert analysis of the current events to include the tragic killing of George Floyd by a now charged rogue police officer.  He hits on the current riots and the history of similar riots in the 60s, along with the movement to defund the police and the possible impact if this were to occur.  On a lighter note the interview moves to one of Chuck's other areas of expertise and that is the efficacy and use of oleoresin capsicum spray (OC pepper spray). 

"I would invite anyone who thinks its easy to arrest someone who doesn't want to be arrested to put handcuffs on someone who doesn't want to go with them, check in at their local Jiu-Jitsu Dojo and try some Jiu-Jitsu.  If you've never done it before, you will quickly find that even though you are rolling with another white belt, its not as easy as you might think.  And you're in a setting where you both agree not to hurt each other and are training with an agreed on set of rules."  Essentially, if you haven't even done that, you have little perspective to critique law enforcement on the use of force and how you would do it better.  You simply don't know what you don't know.

We are super pumped to have Jiu-Jitsu superstar Lachlan Giles on the show. Lachlan is a second degree BJJ black belt. At ADCC 2019 in the Absolute division, Lachlan as one of the lightest competitors (under 77kg) submitted 3 world class heavyweights (Kaynan Duarte, Patrick Gaudio and Mahamed Aly) all by heel hook.

At Kinektic Invitational 1, a five vs five grappling event, Lachlan single-handedly swept the entire team, submitting them all, 4 by heel hook and 1 armbar.

The EvoSec crew also talk about some current events and hit on there accountability for the week and prescribe the new drill of the week which will be half of the IDPA 5x5, this is to focus on the two toughest parts of the drill to isolate and improve.  1.  String 2: 10 yards from the holster, doesn't have to be concealed, on the signal draw and fire strong hand only 5 rounds to the official IDPA target center mass as fast as possible.  2.  String 4: 10 yards, From the holster, draw and fire freestyle/two handed 4 shots to the chest, 1 to the head.

This week we have Dr. William Aprill back on the show to hit on some very timely subjects.  William is the self-protection industry leader in knowing the criminals mind and the protectors mind and how to use this knowledge to keep us safer.  Some of the topics discussed are the phycological effects of the COVID 19 lockdowns and economic impacts, and current riots spurred by George Floyd's death at the hands of negligent police officers.  William also gives us some insight into the mindset of rabble rousing protestors and how they take advantage of and hijack legitimate protests committing violence and anarchy.  Lastly the crew discusses William's preferred weapons and dry fire tools.  The crew then hits on accountability of the week and prescribe the drill of the week which will be a test, re-test of the Todd Green FAST Drill.
