Hot Regression Summer27 Jun 202200:49:54

We recorded this episode before Friday's hideous Supreme Court Roe v Wade decision but still discuss just how regressive this summer already felt — from the threat of nuclear war/fighting Russia to the abortion rights rollback; from Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's reunion to the overwhelming success of Top Gun2—what decade is it even? Where are we? Does time have meaning?

Plus: the open marriage conundrum, does quality inexpensive skincare exist?, what happens when you type "58 year old makeover" into Google, why we all need to get on board with trans kids' rights FFS(!), moving past "compare and despair," and talking honestly about the indignities of aging, no matter what the haters say.

SHOW NOTES: This week we talked about INKEY skincare.

"They Are Trying to Exhaust Us"16 May 202200:59:52

Instead of stewing in our collective outrage (and fury!) over the recently-leaked Supreme Court decision regarding Roe v Wade, now seems like a good time to talk about action. Our guests today — Rebecca Hart Holder and Jen Bluestein — have spent much of their careers fighting for abortion rights and reproductive equity. Rebecca is the executive director of Reproductive Equity Now and Jen is the former managing director of NARAL Prochoice America and the current senior director of policy and advocacy at the Schusterman family philanthropies.

In today's episode, the two explain in simple, straightforward terms where we are with abortion rights now and the best ways to channel our righteous pro-choice rage in order to actually make a difference.

Feeling lonely and like you just don't have enough friends? You're not alone. Our guest this week is Dr. Marisa G. Franco, a psychologist and friendship expert who’s researched and studied the value and meaning of friendship extensively, both in the U.S. and as it applies all over the world. In this episode Dr. Franco walks us through exactly how to make new friends as we age, the common mistakes we're making with our friendships, how to handle friend conflict, and what to do when it's time for a friendship to end.

Dr. Franco's new book, “Platonic: The Surprising New Science of Making and Keeping Friends As An Adult,” will be published by Penguin Random House later this year and is available for pre-order now.

"Marshmallow Brain"31 Jan 202200:52:10

Jenn calls it marshmallow brain, Kim says it's like her brain is full of whipped cream — what we're thinking about in January as we enter close to year three of the pandemic, namely, "The Artist's Way," productivity hacks, and how to schedule a balanced life. Plus: West Elm Caleb, the hell of dating apps, men who date (much) younger women, and the unbearable lightness of being and liking "And Just Like That..."

"Ambient Bummer"24 Jan 202200:52:32

This week: Overworking, underworking, and the gluttony of too much free time."Yellowjackets" and the revelation of Melanie Lynskey plus Juliette Lewis's magnificent face. Questions for the ages: To Botox or not to Botox? To gray or not to gray? Why Jenn wishes she could grow a beard. Why we love Brad Pitt. A mild review of "Somebody Somewhere." The unexpected pleasures of Coke Zero and "The Last Duel," though not at the same time. What's destroying your brain this week? And, finally: the ambient bummer of COVID in January 2022.
