We’ve both learned pretty quickly that there’s no perfect formula for running a business. You can read the books, make the plans and wait until everything feels right, but at some point you just have to start and figure things out along the way. Between us, we’ve made mistakes, changed direction, questioned decisions and learned plenty of lessons the hard way. We talk about what those experiences have taught us and why getting things wrong can sometimes be one of the most valuable parts of building something of your own.
A big part of that has been learning what actually makes a business work behind the scenes. We talk about choosing the right business partner, understanding each other’s strengths, having honest conversations, putting systems and processes in place and creating an experience that makes people want to stay with you. We also reflect on meeting our team in the Philippines and how that experience changed the way we look at what we’re building. What started as a business to create the life we wanted has grown into something that feels like it has a much bigger purpose.
We’re also still learning how to build a business without letting it take over everything else. For Bella, that means learning when to switch off and leave something until tomorrow. For Kylie, it’s making space to think, be creative and come up with what’s next. We’re at different stages of our business journeys, but we both keep coming back to the same thing. You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going before you begin. Start, learn, make the mistakes, listen to the people around you and keep evolving as you go.
