A Once in a Generation Metal Band | Ep. 260: Mastodon20 oct. 202601:00:27

Today we're discussing every album by legendary metal band Mastodon. Formed by Troy Sanders, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor, Mastodon is one of the most creative and constantly evolving metal bands of all time. Albums like Leviathan and Crack the Skye blended incredible technicality, bizarre and unique melodies, as well as complex story concepts. Their most recent album, Marrow Deep, is the band's first album without Brent, following his departure and subsequent death in 2025. Despite the loss, Mastodon continues to push and evolve.

No One Took Them Seriously | Ep. 259: B*tch Magnet29 sept. 202600:22:21

Today we're breaking down every album by Bitch Magnet, one of the most underrated post-hardcore bands of all time. Made up of core members Sooyoung Park, Jon Fine, and Orestes Morfin, Bitch Magnet didn't make a huge splash during their initial run in the late 80s/early 90s. But a successful reunion in 2011 reminded the world of just how ahead of their time they were. This is an essential band for any post-hardcore fan and one of the most underrated bands we've covered on this channel.

The Most Bizarre Punk Band of All Time | Ep. 257: Rudimentary Peni25 août 202600:34:34

Today we're discussing every album by British punk band Rudimentary Peni. While technically considered anarcho punk, RP was far stranger and musically unpredictable--a direction spearheaded by singer/guitarist Nick Blinko. Blinko also produces the band's album art, giving them a brilliant and inimitable signature. While Peni's music has gotten far less adventurous in recent years, their mark as one of the most unique bands of all time remains.

The Overlooked Masters of Noise Rock | Ep. 254: Laughing Hyenas30 juin 202600:38:02

I listened to every album by Laughing Hyenas. Formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan by John Brannon (of hardcore punk band Negative Approach) and Larissa Strickland (of L-Seven) in 1984, Laughing Hyenas were a noise rock band who fused elements of garage rock, punk, blues, and Birthday Party insanity. Their struggles with heroin led to chaos as the years went on, including Brannon vomiting on Drew Barrymore right before a show.

Butthole Surfers Are BACK and Paul Leary Explains How23 juin 202601:37:15

We interviewed Paul Leary, guitarist and founding member of the Butthole Surfers, and he walked us through each of their albums, one-by-one. Made up of core members Paul Leary, Gibby Haynes, and King Coffey, the Butthole Surfers are one of the most beloved and extraordinarily weird bands in history. But after some major-label drama in the early 00s, they are finally releasing the original version of their final album as it was intended by the band (After the Astronaut, out June 26).

I listened to the self-titled debut album by feedtime. Originally formed in 1979, feedtime was a noise rock band from Sydney, Australia who is credited with helping to create grunge music. Kurt Cobain, as well as Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney have each cited feedtime as being influences to their sound.

Today we're discussing the one and only album by Palms, the supergroup made up of Chino Moreno of Deftones, and Aaron Harris, Jeff Caxide, and Bryant Clifford Meyer of Isis. Despite Deftones and Isis both being relatively heavy bands, Palms, on the other hand, is an entirely different animal. This project is distinctly unique and probably not what you're expecting.

But Pentagram formed in the early 70s and is credited with pioneering doom metal. Bobby Liebling, on the other hand, has a backstory to match his face. Today we're discussing the legendary Forever Changes by Love. We're also doing a deep dive into the tragic story of singer and main songwriter Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is widely considered one of the best albums ever made, but it was a massive failure when it released. Later in life, Lee had many run-ins with the law, culminating in his wrongful imprisonment in 1996. He then died at the age of 61 in 2006.

How a Group of Children Inspired a Generation of Music | Ep. 246: Squirrel Bait03 mars 202600:40:37

This week we're discussing every album by Squirrel Bait. Formed in Louisville in the early 80s, Squirrel Bait was a huge influence on what would eventually become emo. While their sound is far closer to Washington DC emo-core bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace, they made a significant impact within their short existence. Members of Squirrel Bait later went on to form Slint, Bastro, and Gastr Del Sol, among others.

[I realize at one point I accidentally say "Alex MacKaye" instead of "Alec." I'm sure there are other errors in this video, but that's the only one driving me crazy.]

This week we're discussing This Nation's Saving Grace by The Fall. More than that, we're doing a deep dive into singer Mark E. Smith's most unbelievable stories. The man was a miserable, mean, abusive wrecking ball of a person, but his stories are funnier than anything you've ever heard. This Nation's Saving Grace is one of The Fall's most beloved albums, so we're digging into all of it here.

The Forgotten Punk Band Who Influenced EVERYONE | Ep. 245: Die Kreuzen17 févr. 202602:05:03

Today we're interviewing drummer Erik Tunison and author Sahan Jayasuriya to discuss every album by Die Kreuzen. While the band began as ferocious hardcore punk in the early 80s, they quickly evolved. With every subsequent record, they were always a few years ahead of their time, pioneering genres like noise rock, alt rock, and grunge. Now, Erik and Sahan (author of Don't Say Please: The Oral History of Die Kreuzen) are here to tell us the entire fascinating story of Die Kreuzen.

Arrests, Heroin, and Barely Singing in Tune | Tender Prey by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds10 févr. 202601:02:26

Today we're discussing Tender Prey by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This is one of Nick Cave's most legendary albums for the simple fact that it contains "The Mercy Seat," his most famous song (also covered by Johnny Cash). But there's so much more to it. The substance abuse and subsequence chaos behind the scenes, the strange production style, and the eclectic songwriting make this one of Nick Cave's absolute weirdest albums.

SNL, Film...Then She Suddenly Disappeared | Ep. 244: Suburban Lawns03 févr. 202600:43:49

This week we're discussing every album by Suburban Lawns. Formed in 1978 in Long Beach, CA, the story of Suburban Lawns is definitely a weird one. A surreal Saturday Night Live appearance, an unlikely friendship with the director of Silence of the Lambs, and the sudden disappearance of their singer, Su Tissue--it's all real. Their history is as strange and unpredictable as their music, and we're dissecting it all here.

Today Mike is interviewing Hugh Swarts, Mark Davies, Brian Hageman, and Paul Bergmann of Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. For the uninitiated, TFUL282 were one of the strangest and most creative indie bands to come out of the 90s. Returning to the Most F*****d Up Album Ever Made13 janv. 202601:13:39

This week we're discussing the best, most awful, controversial, hilarious, and upsetting album to ever grace God's green Earth, Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. An album Mike has been listening to since he was 11-years-old and still can't justify why anyone should listen to it. So his brother Robert is here to set the record straight and give (at least his perspective) on why it's the best album ever made. If you don't get the hype, good. You're probably better off spending your time having a family or making money or something.

Nasty Garage Punk with a Nastier Drug Problem | Ep. 243: Jay Reatard06 janv. 202600:43:18

This week we're discussing every album by Jay Reatard. Before his untimely death due to an overdose in 2010, Jay Reatard (not his birth name, believe it or not) made his name playing a distinct but surprisingly catchy brand of garage rock-infused punk. He started with The Reatards and then Lost Sounds before going solo. Maybe his style isn't for everyone, but dammit if these aren't some of the most fun songs ever written.

Smoke & Fiction by X | Loose Ends23 déc. 202500:22:10

Today we're tying up some loose ends by discussing Smoke & Fiction, the final album by legendary punk band X. We originally covered the band's whole discography back in 2019, so when X reunited to release Alphabetland in 2020, it completely caught us off-guard. Smoke & Fiction is more of the same, which in this case is a bit disappointing. It's great to have an official send off to such a great band, but this one isn't doing it for us.

Formed in Washington DC and opening up for bands like Fugazi, Jawbox--along with Shudder to Think--were one of the Dischord bands signed to a major label in the early 90s. Going back to all of their records today, it's safe to say Jawbox is one of the more criminally underrated bands of the 90s.

Episode 239: Turbonegro25 nov. 202501:54:44

This week we're discussing every album by Turbonegro. Formed in the late 80s in Norway, Turbonegro has carved out their own unique and silly niche in punk. Raunchy lyrics, makeup, sailor hats, and an endless supply of denim are their most consistent themes. Not to mention having made a name for themselves by being featured in various Jackass related shows (Jackass Number 2, Wildboyz, Viva La Bam). However, despite the band's fun aesthetics, we're not fans of their music. Thus, we have incited the wrath of the Turbojugend.
