América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) enfrenta retos críticos ante el cambio climático, que afectan directamente a las comunidades más vulnerables. En el séptimo episodio de Es Posible, titulado "Es Posible, Construir Sistemas de Protección Social Adaptativa para abordar el Cambio Climático", exploramos cómo el desarrollo y la protección social pueden combinarse para construir resiliencia en la región.

Investing in adaptation and resilience isn't just smart—it's a powerhouse move. Empirical evidence shows a cost-benefit ratio of 4, even 12 dollars per dollar invested in prevention; a winning strategy for the future.

América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) es la región en desarrollo más urbanizada del mundo con el 81% de su población residiendo en ciudades. A los retos sociales, políticos, económicos y ambientales que esto conlleva, se le suma que el 70% de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero se producen en las ciudades y cerca del 80% de las pérdidas por desastres ocurren en zonas urbanas. Es por eso que se deben sumar esfuerzos desde distintos sectores para diseñar e implementar medidas que busquen la reducción de emisiones y construir resiliencia climática.

En este cuarto episodio de ES POSIBLE, hablaremos de como las ciudades en América Latina y el Caribe pueden hacer frenta al cambio climático y conoceremos más a fondo la experiencia de Renca, comuna chilena que hace parte de Santiago de Chile, destacada en su estrategia climática en el país y en la región. Estimates indicate that damage caused by climate change could cost the region $100 billion annually by 2050. Therefore, climate action is urgent for and from everyone. The LAC region benefits from accessing donor resources to address climate change’s challenges in their economies, finding ways to increase ambition, and searching for solutions to tackle climate change. Through concessional climate finance, Multilateral Development Banks like the IDB provides financing through grants and concessional lending to developing countries.

Latin America and the Caribbean are home to the most significant species and ecosystem diversity on the planet: more than 40% of the world's biodiversity, including almost a third of the planet's freshwater and nearly half of its tropical forests.The region is home to six of the world's most biodiverse countries (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela) and stores approximately 104 gigatons of carbon, with the Amazon region storing around 10% of global carbon. However, human activities, deforestation and the emission of products and chemicals that damage nature, increase the loss of resources and affect almost 40% of the world's population. But there are positive mechanisms and actions for nature that would help us to combat climate change and biodiversity loss.

Today in this new episode of IT’S POSSIBLE we'll discuss why and how investing in nature pays off. We will hear firsthand how this agenda is advancing in the region with three expert guests Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, CEO of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), Laura Ortiz Montemayor, Chief Purpose Officer of SVX Mexico, and Mariana Bellot, Senior Technical Advisor at The Biodiversity Finance Initiative, BIOFIN.

Para poder alcanzar los objetivos del Acuerdo de París para el 2050 debemos reducir los impactos del cambio climático y avanzar hacia la carbono-neutralidad en la región. La transformación de nuestras economías hacia las cero emisiones netas tiene un gran potencial de generar beneficios para la región. Más allá del sector energético, si se hace de manera justa e inclusiva se estima podría crear 15 millones de empleos netos a la vez que contribuiría al crecimiento del Producto interno bruto en un 1% para 2030.

En este primer episodio de ES POSIBLE, hablaremos de como una transición justa busca distribuir los beneficios de las transformaciones económicas necesarias para reducir las emisiones de carbono, de forma equitativa y conoceremos algunos ejemplos sobre estas herramientas con dos invitados que tienen experiencia de primera mano avanzando hacia la transición justa en la región: El viceministro de Trabajo y Empleo de Ecuador, Henry Valencia y Laura Ripani, jefa de la División de Mercados Laborales del BID.
