Doing THIS can be fatal

In this week's episode of The Engaging Marketeer, Darren speaks to Jella Kang about why people are turning to downright dangerous weight loss products when looking for a "quick fix".

Instead, The Medical Hub is all about educating people on the science behind weight loss, including how mental states such as stress can have an impact on diet, and why reaching for that short term solution is never the answer.

This week on the Engaging Marketeer podcast, I'm speaking to comedian, entertainer, pantomime actor and much more, Phil Reid. Phil has been in the stand-up comedy and entertainment industry for well over a decade and has always been interested in making people laugh, whether it be his classmates, audiences full of people or just his dad!

In this episode, Phil and I discuss his initial upbringing in comedy, what made him want to pursue the difficult vocation of stand-up, his appreciation of other comedians and the shape of his career today given his versatility as a cruise ship performer and pantomime actor.

Phil performs in venues all over country, so if you're interested in stand-up, you may be lucky enough to see him live near you soon enough.

New Facebook Trick For Huge Engagement22 Sep 202200:11:59

In this edition of the Engaging Marketeer, I'm diving into a new Facebook feature that has been introduced within Facebook groups.

When used effectively, this feature can have major benefits if you're trying to market your business on Facebook. In contrast, this feature could come back to bite you in the form of lost followers, leads, sales and even customers if it is misused.

Today, I give you a rundown of everything I have learned about this new feature since I have discovered it, and how I think the feature can be used sensibly as a exceptionally useful tool for marketing your business. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the feature may not exist in Facebook groups for too long if it is overused or misused, so now is the time to find out how it may benefit you.

Be sure to subscribe to the Engaging Marketeer podcast on whichever platforms you use to listen to podcasts. Stay up to date with the latest key industry developments that your business can use to its advantage, as well as the number of interviews we have upcoming with a variety of special guests.

Paul McGee - The SUMO Guy: From Living With M.E. To Helping Manchester City15 Sep 202200:49:10

In this installment of The Engaging Marketeer, I talk with motivational speaker and best-selling author Paul McGee a.k.a The SUMO guy. Paul has been speaking in public for well over two decades, guiding his audiences with his ethos of 'Shut up and move on', which he has developed into a self-development philosophy that has helped countless people. The success of SUMO has been compounded by Paul's success as an author, publishing a total of 13 books, with his original SUMO book becoming a Sunday Times bestseller.

Paul and I discuss the origins of SUMO and how SUMO has helped him recover from setbacks in his own life. We talk about Paul's involvement with Premier League football teams such as Manchester City, revealing some of the similarities and differences in the ways that elite athletes adapt and respond to change as compared to the general public.

Paul has spent much of his professional life inspiring and helping others, although massive success was not simply handed to him on a plate, as he reveals in this episode.

About Paul McGee

Paul McGee is a hugely successful public speaker, business coach and training expert. However, before he was the SUMO guy, Paul was forced to live by the mantra of 'Shut up and move on' well before it helped him become a motivational icon. Plagued by myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome) in his early adult life, Paul had no choice but to become a self-employed motivational trainer. Despite an early lack of success, Paul's determination helped him to become a massively successful figure in motivational speaking and self-development.

Paul still takes his SUMO principles to businesses and institutions all over the country and beyond, and he can now be found on a variety of social media platforms, where he shares brand new video content.

RANT! When You're Accused of Copying a Competitor's Website08 Sep 202200:09:23

It's time for a bit of a rant on today's episode of the Engaging Marketeer. Unfortunately, I've received word of some ridiculous behaviour within the digital marketing industry, involving supposedly 'stolen' websites and some frankly laughable legal action. I feel compelled to address the sheer audacity of the news I've caught wind of, and while I probably could have gone further into rant mode because of how strongly I feel about this issue, I just had to get some of this off my chest.

If you've been on the end of some of the genuinely odd behaviour similar to what is referred to in this podcast, do not hesitate to give me a call or drop me a message, I would be more than happy to help.

Make sure you are subscribed to the Engaging Marketeer on all relevant podcast platforms so you never miss any fantastic interviews or discussions with amazing guests, as well as any important topics within the digital marketing industry.

Here, Hayley discusses topics such as the process of finding high-profile guests for her podcast, the very best interviews that she has conducted, as well as how she manages to stay ahead in the world of marketing. Hayley's terrific insight into her work shines through as she reveals the anxieties faced by athletes when they decide to open up in interviews and the importance of a strong mindset when attempting to grow a business.

Billy Edwards Talks Running TF Nation, Transformers and Dealing with Anxiety04 Aug 202201:00:13

In this episode, I'm interviewing a very old friend of mine, Billy Edwards, who I’ve known for 20-something years. Billy is a solicitor in Liverpool, but it’s more interesting that he organises and runs what I think is Europe’s largest Transformers convention - which takes place in Birmingham each year - TF Nation.

We talk about TF Nation, what the future holds for the convention and what it’s like for Billy dealing with anxiety and having initially struggled to attend a convention to then end up running it on stage with a microphone.

If you're a Transformers lover, would like to attend TF Nation or struggle with social anxiety within large crowds, listen to this podcast.

Who Wants A Free Website? The Scam Going Round Facebook28 Jul 202200:10:38

In this podcast, I talk about one of the horrific scams that do the rounds on social media in my industry.

What's the scam?

Posts in community Facebook groups that offer free websites, where businesses only need to pay the hosting fee.

I discuss why these posts are, in fact, money-thieving scams, what makes them so terrible and what you're actually paying for if you fall victim to one.

So, if you've seen a post in your community Facebook group offering a free website, please listen to this podcast before you reply or tag in a friend!

Rohini Makwana On Bouncing Back From Being Fired By A Celebrity21 Jul 202200:54:06

She was fired on the spot from her role in television due to a minor misunderstanding that wasn't even her fault, but it might just be the best thing that ever happened to Rohini Makwana.

This week, I chat with Rohini from Livewire Media about how a lifelong love of videos and cameras has led her to help clients with video production and marketing, and how she helps them overcome all-to-common issues (or should that be excuses?) like camera shyness and not having a "face" for video.

Loads of great, unique advice in this one, including practical tips on preparing and performing shoots, as well as the must-have equipment for creating awesome video content. Give it a listen!

RANT! Why Nobody Wants To Read Your Facebook Group Posts30 Jun 202200:11:34

In this podcast, I talk about something that may seem quite basic and obvious to most people within the digital marketing industry, but based on the experiences I’ve had with people over the last few weeks, it does actually need to be expressed.

What is it, you may ask?

How to promote your business via Facebook groups.

I discuss the mistake that so many people make when it comes to promoting their businesses in Facebook groups - and what people should actually do if they want to increase their reach and engagement (and ultimately get business).

So, if you're about to post in a Facebook group, hold that thought and listen to this episode first!

Simon Harris, the Man Behaving Dadly, Talks Satire, Fundraising and Fooling Nigel Farage16 Jun 202200:54:17

He was called out by Nigel Farage on GB News, and caused Katie Hopkins to read out complete nonsense (even more so than usual) live on her LBC radio show, but why does he do it, and how is he so good at it?

Today I'm speaking to Simon Harris, who runs the hilarious Man Behaving Dadly blog and satire/fake news website Southend News Network. Both wildly successful, they've been a thorn in the side of several far-right groups and personalities, and even mainstream newspapers like The Sun, by getting them to believe and repeat some utter tosh.

But it's not all just for giggles. Simon's pages have hundreds of thousands of followers, and his posts get millions of views. Best of all, his work has helped raise money for organisations like the RNLI and food banks. Hear the secret to his success, and what motivates him to keep on trolling!

Complaining Cow, Helen Dewdney, on How Businesses Should Handle Complaints09 Jun 202200:53:06

In this episode, I'm speaking with Helen Dewdney, also known as The Complaining Cow. Now, she won’t be offended that I call her that, as it’s literally her brand! Helen helps people make complaints to companies, and she helps companies form their own complaints procedures to make it easier for their customers and their clients to complain to them.

It was great to talk to a kindred spirit, as I've done plenty of complaining myself in the past. In this interview, Helen talks about what makes her so passionate about complaining, her advice on what customers should do to get the resolutions they deserve, what companies should do to improve their customer service and more.

Whether you're a customer who's experienced dreadful customer service with a company or you're a business wanting to improve your complaints processes, this is a must-listen interview.

How GAME Doubled their Website Sales with One Change02 Jun 202200:12:45

In this podcast, I’m going to talk about a time when I first started in the web design industry, back in the late 1990s-early 2000s.

My first “proper” job was as the web designer for GAME. When I worked at GAME originally, it was called Electronics Boutique. The company then bought the Irish company GAME, which had a very different customer profile.

It wanted to keep the brand separate initially, meaning there were two different websites. GAME then made a decision to differentiate the design of these two websites that absolutely crippled the GAME site's online sales.

This mistake is one that countless business owners and indeed web designers also make regularly. In this episode, I'm going to talk about that mistake, and how GAME went on to fix it and DOUBLE its website sales.

If you’re considering a new website design, please listen to this podcast first.

I'm sure we all have at times, but today's guest is an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt like giving up.

Danielle Clarke has always got a buzz from solving problems, going right back to fundraising for her school as an infant, through to refusing to settle for unsuitable work experience at school, and on to responding to the heartbreak of redundancy by going it alone in a male-dominated industry.

As creative as she is determined, Danielle runs Danielle Clarke Creative, which specialises in branding, design and marketing solutions for the health, fitness and wellbeing sector. She also hosts a podcast of her own, Build Better Brands, on which I recently had the privilege of appearing.

What Is The Ideal Length For a Blog For SEO?19 May 202200:11:41

"It's 800 words! Neil Patel says it's 800 words! Don't do anything shorter than that or it won't work!"

In this podcast I address one of the most common questions I get asked, and it's a relatively simple one, but it's so often answered wrongly.

Far too many supposed SEO and digital marketing experts cling like glue to something Neil Patel or John Mueller may have said once upon a time, taking it out of context and presenting it as gospel.

So, what really is the ideal length for a blog? Or is that even the right question?

After that, I move on to another topic where nonsense advice drives me crazy - duplicate content. Is it a no go? Is Google cool with it? Is what I'm doing "duplicate content" or is it "repurposing"?

A nice succinct one for this week, as I wrap up both these matters in under 15 minutes.

Watch the video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylCuyOZCLeQ&

Here's the blog from Neil Patel that many people seem to cite regularly - https://neilpatel.com/blog/long-blog-articles/. Note that he says "it only matters if the content is good" and mentions that some bloggers have had success with blogs of under 200 words.

Jonathan Sothcott: UK Film Producer Talks Movies, Actors, Satorial Style and Working With Steven Seagal12 May 202200:52:50

I’m speaking with one of the busiest men in the British film industry, producer Jonathan Sothcott. I first got to know Joanathan over 20 years ago when bonded over our mutual love of Transformers and Steven Seagal movies. Back then Jonathan was into film journalism and he worked extensively on a number of DVD releases interviewing iconic actors and recording audio commentaries. Over the years Jonathan has produced a huge catalogue of movies of his own, including Vendetta, Nemesis, Age of Kill, The Fall of the Essex Boys and the hugely popular We Still Steal the Old Way and We Still Kill the Old Way.

Jonathan has worked with a wealth of British acting talent, such as Danny Dyer, Craig Fairbrass, Martin Kemp, Billy Murray, Julian Glover, Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy and Patsy Kensit. Jonathan’s latest movie, Renegades, stars film legends Lee Majors and Danny Trejo.

In this interview Jonathan talks openly about his own film catalogue, his influences, what it was like working through lockdown with Steven Seagal and about his good friend, Christopher Ellison, who it was recently announced has been diagnosed with aphasia.

For anyone wanting to get into the film industry, whether as a writer, director, musician or producer, you’re going to want to hear what Jonathon has to say.

Huge Mistake that Continues to Cripple Websites' Traffic, Leads and Sales05 May 202200:16:18

In this episode, I’m going to talk to you about one of the most obvious mistakes that people make with their website that can absolutely destroy their rankings in search engines, and the traffic, sales and leads that come through them.

This is such an obvious mistake, I can’t fathom why anybody would ever make it in today’s day of search engine optimisation (SEO). Recently, one of our clients who moved their website to a new agency did exactly this mistake, and it crippled their website.

When somebody says we're going to get a new website, there's a series of alarm bells that kick off. The biggest one is about the content. We always say to clients, “please, please don’t delete your content”.

If you delete your site’s content, all of these pages that people are coming into your website on when they search for it in Google won’t be there anymore, and if it's not there anymore, it won't appear in Google. If it doesn't appear in Google, your clients aren’t going to find it when they look for you, they're not going to come through to your website, and your traffic will just drop. Your enquiries will stop. Your new business will fade away.

If you’re considering a new website – especially if you’re moving to a new web designer – please listen to this podcast first. Your future customers will thank you!

Lesbian Vampire Killers Director Talks Filmmaking, Actors, Script Writing & James Corden28 Apr 202201:11:19

In this episode I have a long overdue catch up with one of my old mates from film school, director Phil Claydon.

Phil Claydon is best known for directing the 2009 film Lesbian Vampire Killers, but he's so much more than that! His passion and excitement for film really shines through, and he was the one at film school who everyone knew was going to make it – he’s also the only one from our year who graduated with a First.

I’m not jealous!

In this revealing interview, we talk about our time in film school, and how Phil actually blagged his way into film school after being rejected multiple times. It’s a lesson for anyone on persistence in following your dreams.

Phil talks about how he managed to get his film projects off the ground, and the hard work involved in making each project a reality.

Phil talks about directing James Corden (The Late Late Show with James Corden, Into The Woods, Trolls, Cats) and what it was like working with James. Phil also discloses how he feels when James Corden hates down on the film Lesbian Vampire Killers whenever it’s mentioned on the Sky One show A League of Their Own.

We hear how Corden’s co-star Mathew Horne (Gavin & Stacey, Planet 51, Robin Hood) won the role in the film with some help from Gavin & Stacey co-writer Ruth Jones, and how Phil had to play peacemaker between James Corden and Paul McGann (Doctor Who, Alien 3, Withnail & I) on the set of Lesbian Vampire Killers.

Phil talks about his first film, Alone, and how he, as a 24-year-old director, felt working with the legendary actress Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter, Babe, Romeo + Juliet). We hear about creative differences with the film’s soundtrack that led to Rick Wakeman’s soundtrack being replaced, and the awkward conversation required to do that.

For anyone interested in films, fimmaking or how you get a project off the ground, this is a ‘must listen to’ podcast.

How I Traced a Fake Facebook Profile and Salvaged My Reputation as a Father21 Apr 202200:19:55

Cyber bullying – it's not big, it's not clever, and it's really, really unpleasant if you are the victim of it. When I was in school, social media didn't exist, but nowadays, social media bullying is unfortunately rife.

If you're the victim of social media bullying, particularly on Facebook, it's the kind of thing that you can't always get away from, because it's there it's 24/7. It's in your face all the time, and I had some involvement with social media bullying a few years ago, when I got the opportunity to be the hero. Here's the story of how I successfully traced a fake Facebook profile and salvaged my reputation as a father in the process.

If you or someone you know is suffering with Facebook bullying, here's the link to the guide I've written to follow the process of tracking these bullies for yourself: https://www.onlinelearningacademy.co.uk/courses/how-to-trace-a-fake-facebook-account-ebook

Does Google Hate SEO?21 Apr 202200:17:21

In this first episode of the Engaging Marketeer podcast, I address the proverbial elephant in the digital marketing room – does Google hate SEO?

Google hating SEO is something I’ve heard many times over the years, from people ranging from business owners to SEO experts. But is it true? Does Google really hate SEO? If you perform SEO on your website, are you risking irking the almighty Google and being hit with a penalty?

The short answer is yes, and no. Yes – Google does hate the sort of SEO that unethical, dodgy people use to gain an unfair advantage and cheat their way to the top of Google’s rankings. Over the many years I have been in this industry (since the last Century no less) I have seen ‘get rankings quick’ scheme after ‘get rankings quick’ scheme come and go. Each time a new method to con Google and get a website ranked when better websites were more deserving would work for a short while, and then be found out.

In this podcast I explain some of those, what happened and why they don’t work.

The other answer is No – Google does not hate SEO as it’s essential to help Google to index the content on a website, and present it to the user when they search for it. This means the user is happy, and they’ll continue to use Google. Google is happy, because they retain users and continue to make billions of dollars in ad revenue.

SEO, done the right way, helps Google make billions of dollars in ad revenue. But what is the right way, and what is the wrong way? I go into that during the podcast.

Paying for Links is Like Playing Catch with a Live Hand Grenade21 Apr 202200:15:22

In the world of digital marketing, the subject of ‘link building’ and, more specifically, the exchange of money for links in order to increase the rankings of a website, is a hotly debated one. There are some digital marketing experts who freely use this tactic, actively promote it and even offer it as a service to other digital marketing professionals. Then there are those who consider it cheating, underhand, deceitful and in direct violation of Google’s very strict rules.

In which camp do I sit, you may wonder? I’m firmly in the latter. Google’s TOS (terms of service) has always been very clear on this subject: if you pay for a link to manipulate the rankings so your website ranks higher, you’re in violation of Google’s terms of service. You may, therefore, be subject to Google’s swift, unyielding action.

Yet there are many business owners who unwittingly fall for the patter of companies offering better rankings in exchange for money (and links) and find themselves in hot water with Google. In this podcast I lay it down clearly, firmly and without any ambiguity. If you’re considering using a link seller, or if you’re considering using a digital marketing company or freelancer who has promised you paid links will increase your rankings, please first listen to this podcast.

Be in not doubt, paying for links to increase the rankings of your website is like playing catch with a live hand grenade. Eventually it’s going to blow up in your face.

Google's own guide on paying for links:

6 Steps to Running Successful Facebook Ads21 Apr 202200:33:01

Most people who try to run Facebook Ads find they don’t work, or they cost too much and never generate enough business for the expense. I’m going to tell you why that is, and share my 6-step process for always getting the best results with your Facebook Ads.

This process has been used again and again for our own agency, and for our clients, and has seen ads generate hundreds of times their ad spend.

The trick is ensuring you tick all 6 boxes, as any one step that’s missed will see your ads fail. Make sure you don’t ACT MAD as I go through my acronym to explain each of the 6 required ingredients for a high-performing Facebook Ad.

ACT MAD stands for:

  • Ad Type
  • Creative
  • Targeting
  • Messaging & Offer
  • Attention
  • Destination

If any of those is wrong with your ads, then your ads won’t be performing as well as they should – if they’re even performing at all.

Jenny Agutter Talks American Werewolf, John Landis and Sex Scenes21 Apr 202200:28:46

With an acting career that started when she was just 12 years old, Jenny Agutter has appeared in some of the best-loved cult classics of the last 40 odd years. Her movie credits include such films as Logan’s Run, An American Werewolf in London, The Railway Children, the hugely controversial ‘Walkabout’ and even in the MCU in Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Her TV credits are just as impressive, with appearances in much-loved shows such as Magnum PI, Murder She Wrote, The Equalizer, Red Dwarf and most recently as Sister Julienne in Call the Midwife.

I caught up with Jenny in a London hotel room to discuss her work on the brilliant 1980s horror comedy ‘An American Werewolf in London’, where we talked at length about the director John Landis (who also directed Michael Jackson’s Thriller video), her controversial movie ‘Walkabout’ which was previously banned and what is was liking filming a sex scene with co-star David Naughton. Jenny opens up on An American Werewolf in London like she’s never done before.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura: The $7 Billion Box Office Film Producer Talks Transformers and Michael Bay21 Apr 202200:12:18

Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s movies have generated well in excess of $7 billion at the global box office, and he has worked on some of the film industry’s largest franchises such as Transformers, G.I. Joe, Jack Ryan and Maze Runner. The list of actors Lorenzo has produced in films reads like a who’s who of Hollywood royalty, including Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins, Mark Wahlberg, Dame Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta Jones, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to name but a few.

I caught up with Lorenzo ahead of the release of the third Transformers movie, Dark of the Moon, to discuss what it was like working on such a popular and big budget franchise film, and with ‘stars’ of the film that nobody ever saw on set as they were digitally added afterwards. In this brief interview Lorenzo discusses his early film influences, the challenges of producing a billion dollar feature film using a new 3D technology, and how they chose the lead characters for the Transformers movies.

Liverpool Comedy Festival Winning Performance21 Apr 202200:15:17

With a childhood dream of being a stand up comedian, I leapt at the chance of entering a stand up comedy competition to raise money for Wirral Mencap. Following 6 intensive training sessions with a professional comedian I wrote and performed my own routine at Prenton Park, the home of Tranmere Rovers FC, in front of 200+ paying guests and alongside the other amateur comedians.

The winner of the contest was decided by the public vote, with my routine receiving the highest number of votes. It was without question the most terrifying and most satisfying thing I have ever done.

Run Away Fast When You Hear 'Digital Marketers' Say This21 Apr 202200:10:41

Something that really annoys me about my industry is when the so-called 'rock stars' of SEO spend all their time telling people they're really good at SEO, and what search terms they rank for. The search terms they're so proud of are invariably never searched for, which is why they've managed to rank for them, and the only people who ever search for them are 1) themselves, and 2) other people who are told they rank for it, straight after being told.

When someone tells you how great they are at SEO, and spends their time telling you what they rank for, ask yourself 'who cares?'. The best people at SEO don't go around telling others what they rank for in Google, they're too busy dealing with the business they receive from the phrases they actually rank for in Google.

This is my slightly irritated take on one such digital marketing 'expert' who does this.
