| "Chance's Motto" by Jasper L'Estrange | An EnCrypted Original Story | 15 Sep 2021 | 00:47:08 | |
"Whodunnit" writer Amelia Cramphorne seeks to engineer a love-match between two eligible singletons in her village - but starts to have second thoughts when she suspects that handsome Peter Chance has sinister motives. But is life imitating art or art imitating life in this strange tale? In his essay "Stories I Have Tried To Write", the master of the antiquarian ghost story, M.R. James, outlined several plot ideas he'd been unable to develop.Β Naturally, other authors have since used these ideas for their own stories.Β One of the ideas James writes about concerns a Christmas cracker and this is my attempt at developing the story... | "The Dream" by A.J. Alan | An EnCrypted Vintage Radio Special | 09 Sep 2021 | 00:12:57 | |
A vintage radio special of EnCrypted, returning once again to the whimsical uncanny shaggy dog stories of A.J. Alan. In "The Dream", Alan recounts the strange recurring dream he has had since childhood. But what can it all mean...? Nottingham-born A.J. Alan (real name: Leslie Harrison Lambert) was a performing magician, radio ham, volunteer coastguard radio operator, and Β naval intelligence officer who, at the start of World War II was part of the vital military intelligence effort at Bletchley Park. Prior to Β the war, he was telling stories on BBC radio and became one of the most popular broadcasting personalities of the time. These stories - light, but often strange and sometimes spooky - were later to be anthologised in ghost story collections such as the Fontana series curated by Robert Aickman, although they were meant to be performed and delivered in the rambling, conversational style Alan had made his own. He died in 1941. Archive radio of A.J. Alan is now hard to find, but you can hear some gramophone recordings on the Stars of the Wireless site here: https://rfwilmut.net/wireless/alan.html More great horror stories are on their way... CREATORβS NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and musicβ¦because thatβs what I like to make and listen to. Itβs not everyoneβs cup of tea or coffee, but luckily we exist in a world of almost limitless choice, so if it hurts your ears or makes you nauseous, feel free to move on to something else, no need to leave a comment. I try and do voices and accents to distinguish between characters as it can help the listener, but Iβm not Meryl Streep, nor have I ever claimed to be. Wish I had her money though. I do a wide variety of mostly vintage (early 20th century) stories on this channel. Naturally, the stories reflect the attitudes and language of the time. They didnβt know any better. But they did dress smarter and look good in hats. Sometimes pet animals die in these stories (though not in this one). When it happens, try not to weep, just hold your own pet animal a little tighter (but not too tightly).

| An EnCrypted Special: "The Diver" by A.J. Alan | 01 Jul 2021 | 00:17:35 | |
Nottingham-born A.J. Alan (real name: Leslie Harrison Lambert) was a performing magician, radio ham, volunteer coastguard radio operator, and naval intelligence officer who, at the start of World War II was part of the vital military intelligence effort at Bletchley Park. Prior to the war, he was telling stories on BBC radio and became one of the most popular broadcasting personalities of the time. These stories - light, but often strange and sometimes spooky - were later to be anthologised in ghost story collections such as the Fontana series curated by Robert Aickman, although they were meant to be performed and delivered in the rambling, conversational style Alan had made his own. He died in 1941. Β Β Archive radio of A.J. Alan is now hard to find, but you can hear some gramophone recordings on the Stars of the Wireless site here: https://rfwilmut.net/wireless/alan.html Β Β I have tried to recreate the feel of one of those vintage broadcasts with this reading of what is possibly A.J. Alan's most traditional "ghost" story, Β "The Diver". Β This special episode is intended as a tribute from one Nottingham "radio Β ham" to another! You can read more about A.J. Alan in this informative essay: https://tychy.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/premonitory-tales-from-dickens-signalman-to-the-radio-broadcasts-of-a-j-alan-66/ Β Β More great horror stories are on their way...
