How Carbon Credits Work – with Donna Lee, CEO & CoFounder, Calyx Global31 Mar 202600:52:53

"What I knew about Carbon Credits having watched them for many years is that they're not always what they seem...So, Calyx Global was founded in 2021 to help companies navigate the space, to really understand….(i)t's a promise that somebody has reduced methane in that landfill or planted some trees thousands of miles away. So that's what Calyx Global is, we're a Carbon Credit Ratings Agency. But really what we're doing is, for every one of these assets, helping buyers understand what's underneath that, what the quality of that asset is.  Donna Lee on Electric Ladies Podcast

You've probably heard the words "carbon credits" banted about. But what are they exactly and how do they work?

Listen to Donna Lee, CEO & Cofounder of Calyx Global (and former climate policy negotiator at the UN and U.S. State Dept.) in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

●        What carbon credits are, how they're measured and verified, because they are not all equal.

●        Where policies and regulations provide stability (or uncertainty)

●        Why companies buy and trade carbon credits – the business case.

●        Plus, career advice, such as:

"One is, follow your passion always. If you are passionate about making a difference, find a job where you make a difference. Don't settle for less and you will succeed more if you feel really strongly and you love what you're doing…The other thing, just being sort of a woman in late career and only maybe in some ways only finding my footing now as a co-founder is, don't underestimate your abilities….What's more important, competence or confidence? It is both in equal measure. Women always underestimate their abilities, right? Men always overestimate and women always underestimate. And so women double down on competence…You can be authentic and confident and don't undersell yourself… Lean in on the things that come naturally to you." Donna Lee on Electric Ladies Podcast

Creativity & Relationships Help Secure Grants – Megan Pater, CEO/Founder of Fund Nation & ECE Solutions24 Mar 202600:52:31

"Number one reason that people get denied and they didn't read the eligibility criteria. So yeah, very, very important …If you don't have the qualifications or something for something, you partner with somebody who does and you guys go after it together.… If you don't know something, that gives you a reason to call the vendor and start that conversation and get that personal relationship with them.…Relationships, relationships, relationships. It really is the key to grants. It's really not about what you write, it's about who you're speaking to ahead of time." Megan Pater on Electric Ladies Podcast

Nonprofits and mission focused small businesses are facing historic funding threats at the moment due mostly to massive cuts in federal funding under the Trump administration and Republican-led Congress and related political pressures. The good news is that this crisis is also an opportunity for these nonprofits and mission-focused businesses to think differently about how they fund their operations and their goals. How?

Listen to Megan Pater, CEO/Founder of Fund Nation and ECE Solutions on how to find and secure grants in this enlightening conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. She also happens to be a member of the Native American Osage Nation.

You'll hear about:

●        How you don't have to be a nonprofit -- even if the grant criteria requires one.

●        How relationships, partnerships and creative strategic thinking are key.

●        The magic of Megan's database to help small businesses and nonprofits secure grants

●        Plus, career advice, such as:

"Relationships. If you are seeking to move even laterally in your career, just making some type of change, you need to know what you're getting into, speak to somebody who's been there, reach out for help.… There's so many programs that are government-funded or city- or county-funded that you can enter into and they will raise you up…There's no reason for you not to feel supported.…But there's so many resources out there that are free and available that we already pay for with our taxes, and if you're not utilizing them, you are hurting yourself….We've already paid for them when we pay our taxes and people don't utilize them enough."

How To Talk About Climate In A Polarized Culture – Katharine Hayhoe, Climate Scientist, Professor at Texas Tech University & Chief Scientist at The Nature Conservancy20 Jan 202601:00:35

"We have to begin our conversations with what really matters to the person or people we're speaking with. And if we don't know what that is, we have to get to know them and build a relationship and then start the conversation where they're at…The second common misconception I see is that we have to load up our wheelbarrow with the biggest load of scary facts we can possibly find and just dump it on people because not enough people are worried about this.…But if we haven't connected the head to the heart, my life, the places I love, the people I love, the things I love my home, the price of my groceries, the price of my insurance, the quality of the air I'm breathing, or my child's breathing, if we haven't made the head to heart connection, people still see this issue as being distant and remote from them."

Katharine Hayhoe on Electric Ladies Podcast

Signs of climate change are all around us, from ferocious and more frequent hurricanes, and in unexpected places, to massive wildfires and floods, as well as cracking roads and bridges. But many still don't believe it or don't want to take steps to avoid it or become more resilient. So, how can we reach them, especially in the very polarized culture we have today?

Listen to Katharine Hayhoe, Ph.D. acclaimed climate scientist, Professor at Texas Tech University and Chief Scientist of The Nature Conservancy in this enlightening conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. Katharine is also the author of several books, including "Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World."

You'll hear about:

●        How to talk about climate issues even without even talking about climate.

●        What we can learn from the faith-based community about talking about the climate crisis.

●        What is happening to the vitally important climate science data that was defunded and taken offline by the Trump administration…and so much more

●        Plus, career advice, such as:

"(W)hat am I uniquely good at? So there's certain things that I'm a lot better at than other people. So that's the filter that we should apply. But then my favorite's the last filter, which is what genuinely gives me joy, what charges my battery rather than depleting it. Now, of course, don't get me wrong, we all have to do things that deplete our battery every day. But if our work does not give us joy or if it gave us joy at some time in the past but is no longer doing so now, that's a sign to us to think differently about what we're doing….(And invest) in making our own lives sustainable is so important. It's something I feel like we often neglect and it falls by the wayside in our focus on everything else that needs to be sustainable. But really I think it starts with US." Katharine Hayhoe on Electric Ladies Podcast

The Tipping Point Business Is At Now – Isabelle Grosmaitre, Goodness & Co (from France)30 Oct 202300:42:08

"We are at a tipping point when businesses need to reinvent themselves for a better future. In fact, I believe that they need to reinvent the model and even demonstrate the contribution to society. I believe. in fact, that only companies with a positive impact will thrive. Why? Because they will be chosen by people, by employees, as you said, by investors, by partners, by clients. This is what is happening right now. And the question is not anymore about the why, the question has become about the how," Isabelle Grosmaitre on Electric Ladies Podcast.

Businesses today across the globe are being pulled in many, many directions. Employees, suppliers, regulators, investors, communities, and customers are making demands that sometimes conflict and are speaking with their dollars and their time. Being perceived as a good corporate citizen and leader is more important and more complicated than ever, as is being a board member.

Listen to Isabelle Grosmaitre, Founder/CEO of Goodness & Co. on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson explain how executives and boards can frame these issues successfully. Goodness & Co is a management consulting firm based in Paris, France. I had the privilege of having Isabelle on a panel of mine at the huge ChangeNow Summit in Paris a few months ago. (Note: This was recorded before the barbaric attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023 and the subsequent regional war involving Gaza.)

You'll hear:

  • Why she thinks this moment is a critical tipping point for businesses and leadership.
  • How conscious leadership is becoming a movement at the top of global corporations.
  • How business models need to change to include their impact on society writ large, as well as financial prosperity.
  • What the "new era of governance" is that she sees we need, why and how to get there.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as….

"One is, that you need to listen to your inner voice. Sometimes it may feel super scary, that's the reality a lot of times. But the reality is that the only way to thrive is to listen to your inner voice. The second thing is, that it's okay to be ambitious. I think it's one of the critical values that leadership needs is to be ambitious, because we need to really reinvent the way we do business. So, this will not happen without ambitious leaders. I believe that, in fact have the courage to…think big, to be a super bold and willing to change the world…the courage to act." Isabelle Grosmaitre on Electric Ladies podcast

A Biography of Carbon! - Daniella Ortega, Direector of "Carbon: An Unauthorized Biography"18 Oct 202300:57:18

"What surprised me was actually how profound, how deep I managed to have this relationship with carbon. Like, because in the end, I found, through the writing and embodying carbon for so long, I found the connections, the  entanglement of carbon across so many aspects of all our lives so illuminating, so surprising. Sometimes I just felt so moved by the wonder of it all, and I still do. Just thinking about it now makes me think, God, it's so wondrous." Daniella Ortega on Electric Ladies Podcast

If you were making a film about carbon, what would it be like? On Electric Ladies Podcast today you'll hear from a woman who actually did that. She's science filmmaker Daniella Ortega, who is co-director of a new, extraordinary documentary called "Carbon: An Unauthorized Biography." They use a number of super-creative theatrical devices to tell the story, including personifying carbon and using 3D animation.

Listen to Daniella Ortega explain on Electric Ladies Podcast in this inspiring conversation with host Joan Michelson, how she came up with the idea and how she and her production team chose how to tell the story of the one element in the universe that is in everything, including us – yet that we are also trying to reduce.

You'll hear:

  • Why they made carbon and woman and how they secured one of the top actresses of the moment to voice "her."
  • How Daniella came up with the idea and how that was filtered throughout the film.
  • How to communicate climate messages in stories without being preachy or awkward.
  • How she developed an emotional connection to carbon in the process of learning more about it making the film
  • Plus, insightful career advice ….

"What I've come to learn about what it is to be a creative person with ambition and wanting to make an impact … I think finding the gaps of where you sit. You have some skills, that's great, but where are the gaps? What do you feel can empower you or make you feel or give you those skills that you need to fill those gaps? And then look to other people or ways in which ways to fill them… (Also) don't be isolated. Connect, connect, connect with those around you, and…don't give your power away, keep your power and try to build on it." Daniella Ortega on Electric Ladies podcast

War & The Hidden Power of ESG - Natalie Jaresko, fmr Finance Minister of Ukraine18 Oct 202301:09:36

War & The Hidden Power of ESG - Natalie Jaresko, fmr Finance Minister of Ukraine

"The global business community must understand that nurturing, upholding and protecting freedom and democracy is part of their ESG responsibility. It's not only in their best interest, but also in, in those of their increasingly noisy and numerous stakeholders…Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, not all chief executives have had the courage to take actions which would be consistent with their ESG policies," Natalie Jaresko in the Financial Times.

How might ESG systems support peace and prosperity and disincentivize the brutality we see in the news from the barbaric attack on civilians in Israel and the continuing atrocities in Ukraine by Russia's unprovoked war? Natalie Jaresko, the former finance minister of Ukraine explained how to Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson in this riveting interview.

Natalie helps us step back a moment and think about how what's at the core of ESG systems might help drive a lasting peace. It's also vital that we continue to pressure lawmakers to approve aid to Ukraine immediately, as well as to Israel.

You'll hear:

  • How ESG can be a tool for democracy, as well as climate and social goals.
  • How globalization allows Russia's dark money to be a hidden influence on Western policies and institutions.
  • What you can do to support Ukraine, today.
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"I think today there are more ways to make a difference while making money than there ever have been before you don't need to remain or stay in public policy in the traditional kind of government think tank, uh, world. Now companies are establishing entire branches, departments, foundations to make a difference." Natalie Jaresko on Electric Ladies podcast

How Do We Talk About The Climate? – Jill Tidman, The Redford Center20 Sep 202300:48:06

"When we're searching for projects to invest in and support, we're really trying to make sure that it's a story that has kind of a balanced narrative. It's not about just talking about what we can do and how we're, how we're winning. It's really making sure that we understand what's at stake and what the impacts are and who the impacts are hitting, and also seeing people in action addressing and dealing with the situation at hand. And I think that's where it's very hard, increasingly hard." Jill Tidman on Electric Ladies Podcast

How do we talk about the climate? The public is experiencing the effects of a warming – boiling – planet more each day with massive wildfires, massive floods and extreme heat, as well as destructive hurricanes and the like. But how do we tell the story of how those events reflect the actions we need to take to avert worse?

This is the challenge of today for those of us seeking to save humanity's ability to live on a warming planet. As I wrote in Forbes recently, how we talk about the weather matters. Listen to Jill Tidman, Executive Director of The Redford Center (founded by actor, producer, Robert Redford and his late son James Redford) on Electric Ladies Podcast in this inspiring conversation with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • Why stories are vital to massive social, political and economic change.
  • How The Redford Center chooses its projects to motivate action.
  • How to communicate climate messages in stories without being preachy or awkward.
  • How culture can reach people who are disinclined toward the climate change message.
  • Plus, insightful career advice ….

"Any time you can find work that aligns with your, your personal values and goals, you're going to excel, you're going to feel better, you're going to be happier, you're going to have more value, you're going to succeed in the ways that I think are probably most meaningful for women. And, and then, I also think, don't be shy. I think that we have a tendency to not ask for what we need or put in an idea forward, um, or, go out on a limb. We don't need to play small. We're in the room, and if you're in the room, be in the room."

Jill Tidman on Electric Ladies podcast

The Economy, Climate Change & Federal Funding Opportunities – Heather Boushey, White House Council of Economic Advisors & Chief Economist of Invest in America Cabinet12 Sep 202300:44:31

"Much of our infrastructure isn't built to withstand certain kinds of flooding or certain levels of heat. And yet, as the climate changes, so many of the things… that we did know in a world with a stable climate, those are now being upended. And all of that affects costs fundamentally… So, we need to transition to net zero…The three pieces of (federal) legislation are all about investing in America and making sure that from the innovation to commercialization pipeline, we are helping those goods get to market at scale, at prices consumers can afford." Heather Boushey on Electric Ladies Podcast

Climate change affects the entire economy, especially our infrastructure, like transportation, energy and electric power systems, buildings, manufacturing, etc. and every one of us, from consumers to businesses to investors, to education etc. Every sector, every community, every income bracket. NOAA calculated it's already caused almost $3 trillion in damages. The Biden administration signed three massive bills into law with Congress's help that address this pivot to a net zero economy and upgrading our infrastructure.

Listen to Heather Boushey, Member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors and Chief Economist of the Invest in America Cabinet, in this exclusive and rare interview by Joan Michelson on Electric Ladies Podcast explain how we can economically do this transition and how this federal funding reduces our risks and costs to do, while also expediting this transition to help avert even far worse effects of climate change.

You'll hear:

  • How climate change affects the economy, and key sectors specifically.
  • Resources in the Inflation Reduction  Act, Infrastructure Investment Act & CHIPS & Science Act to help homeowners, businesses and investors make these changes at reduced risks and lower costs.
  • Where the opportunities – and jobs – are in this transition, including for women.
  • The impact on women specifically and resources available
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"For me, the key to my career was being clear on what my mission is….I feel so enormously fortunate that I found a president to be able to work for who shares that goal….So I think the lesson in that is either be the leader that you want to believe in, or find that leader and attach yourself to them and see what amazing things you can do together. But, for me, it's been about being clear on what it is that I wanted to achieve." Heather Boushey on Electric Ladies Podcast

Career Advice From 3 Women Innovators - By Listener Demand!31 Aug 202300:27:23

This is our next in the series – requested by our loyal Electric Ladies Podcast listeners – for a collection of career advice from a handful of our various guests. The last question I ask in every interview is for career advice for midcareer women who want to make a difference.  Is that you?

If you want to make a difference with your career, and especially if you work in energy, climate, sustainability corporate responsibility or ESG (environment, social governance), or want to work in these fields, this advice will be especially relevant to you.

This week, you'll hear career advice from:

·       Meredith Shields, Managing Director, Head of Citi Impact Fund

·       Aimee Christensen, CEO/Founder of Christensen Global, of the Sun Valley Forum, and of the Sun Valley Center Institute

·       Jane Poynter, CEO/Cofounder of Space Perspective

·       Jacqui Patterson, Founder/Executive Director of the Chisholm Legacy Project, A Resource Hub

·       Sarah Cumbers, Ph.D., Director of Evidence & Insight at Lloyd's Register Foundation

Here's a hint:

"People are looking for community, so even if you think you might be the only one who's raising this issue,…you will find your people. And if you don't speak your truth, if you don't ask the hard question, you won't find the people who are looking to align with that aggressive leadership and trust your gut on that. So trust your gut, whether it's about a new job, about a direction we need to be going in, even if it feels a little bit lonely, because… You'll be proven. People will find you and want to collaborate with you." Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast

Zero Emissions Space Travel? – Jane Poynter, Space Perspective15 Aug 202300:30:11

"People who have been to space really do speak about it with great reverence. And it is for that reason that we want to take people to space in our car. Neutral zero emission spaceship, spaceship vacuum, which as you saw is not a rocket. Enormous balloons. It's a very gentle flight. We want to take leaders to space. We want to take artists to space. We want to have teachers go to space." Jane Poynter at Earth Day Network's Climate Leadership Gala

As Virgin Galactic takes another set of civilians into space, think about all the emissions they are adding to the very airspace they are celebrating.  Space Perspective says they are doing similar space travel but without hurting the planet. Imagine how much energy those trips use. And, though they are also doing climate research up there, the capsules and rockets are not generally carbon neutral. Can they be?

Listen to veteran space executive and former Biosphere 2 leader Jane Poynter, CEO and cofounder of Space Perspective describe how they are doing carbon neutral space travel in this extraordinary conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson conducted at the Earth Day Network Climate Leadership Gala (so there will be a lot of background sound).

You'll hear:

  • How Space Perspective is making space travel carbon neutral (from fuel to materials).
  • Who is paying for it (and what it will cost you to take ride with them)
  • The general carbon footprint of today's space shuttles and private companies' space travel.
  • How her experience in Biosphere 2 led to Space Perspectives.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"There are so many ways to make a difference, right?... I think at the end of the day, you have to be true to yourself and what is it that fires you up. And, and what is it that that does light that fire within you that you have to pursue, that you're driven to pursue, and then go pursue it. And, you know, sometimes it takes going in at a level that maybe you don't feel is your level. Maybe it's beneath you, but if you are trying to move into a slightly adjacent career, you have to do that. Cuz you have to work your way up sometimes. And it's also the best way to learn." Philanthro-Activism At Work – Justin Winters, One Earth03 Aug 202300:31:42

"We're in this moment right now where we have a very short window to drive the type of transformative change that's necessary to solve a climate crisis. And we believe at One Earth that philanthropy can play a really, really critical role in actually making this transformation possible….But less than 2% of all philanthropic capital goes to climate and environment issues, and just a fraction of that actually reaches efforts on the ground efforts" Justin Winters on Electric Ladies Podcast

We think it's hot where we are, but emerging and rural areas have it much worse. One strategy to help them is now called "philanthro-activism." What is it ? Enter One Earth, a new kind of philanthropic organization, run by women who believe that the people on the ground know best what will help their communities and save the planet.

Listen to Justin Winters, Executive Director and Cofounder of One Earth – and former head of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation – explain how they are pooling the resources of both some of the world's richest people and normal people like you and me to help the most diligent, creative people doing the real work every day to avert climate catastrophes in their areas in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson.

  • What Philanthro-activism is and why they coined the term.
  • How they developed this creative business model – and what Winter learned at DiCaprio's Foundation.
  • Stories of people on the ground who One Earth is supporting and why
  • Which areas of the economy One Earth focuses on and why (such as food security)
  • Plus, insightful career advice ….

"I would put purpose at the center, and service because we're in a moment where it really is being ambitious. Doesn't have to be tied to resources, right? Being ambitious can be about the type of change that you want to drive in the world.."

Climate & Culture - Sandra Bargman & Chantal Bilodeau, Artists & Climate Initiative26 Jul 202300:04:18

"For anything to happen on a grand scale, we need to have culture supported… Artists are good at planting these seeds, putting the stories out there and for anybody. The key is repetition. So, if you encounter a certain story, certain type of story in the music you listen to, in the articles that you read, in the billboard that you see or the murals that you see when you walk down the street at some point, it creates a frame that you can start to live in and the changes become something that is natural." Chantal Bilodeai on Electric Ladies Podcast

How do we reach the "unconverted" – those who do not yet take the threat of climate change seriously? Maybe culture has some answers, because stories, music, art…culture…touches us in ways nothing else does. This is a critical and timely conversation many of us communications leaders had at the Sun Valley Forum recently too.

How do we leverage them to help us talk about the weather differently, as I wrote in Forbes recently? Listen to Sandra Bargman and Chantal Bilodeau, who created, produced and performed the "Earth Intention: A Climate Cabaret," on Electric Ladies Podcast in this reply of this powerful and inspiring conversation with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • Why culture is vital to massive social, political and economic change.
  • How music and the arts move people through "hope."
  • How to communicate climate messages in stories without being preachy or awkward
  • About using the arts to reach people who may not naturally "get" the climate message, or who may be overwhelmed.
  • Plus, insightful career advice ….

"It's never too late to pivot. I think people who are mid-career, women particularly, we always feel like, 'oh, my time was then,' (but) it is never too late to pivot…And the other thing that reflects my career is, don't feel as though you have to pick one lane. You can pick more than one lane and both of those lanes or more can be successful."

Sandra Bargman on Electric Ladies podcast

Read my articles in Forbes about how we talk about the weather, and about developing a new narrative for the climate effort.

Hire The Outliers – Joan on Lesley Michaels Show, "Women We Should Know"11 Jul 202300:25:02

"72% of CEOs say that innovation is one of their top three priorities. And close to 70% of them say they have a hard time driving innovation in their organization. I would posit, having been in there and been an intrapreneur myself, that the problem is they hire the wrong people. They hire for what I call mediocrity, they hire based on fit. And they hire based on past experience doing exactly what they want that person to do. And that's not where you get innovation. Innovation comes from connecting different dots and connecting dots differently." Joan Michelson on Lesley Michaels show "Women We Should Know"

This week's episode is a tribute to a brilliant woman who shined the spotlight on "Women We Should Know" with her podcast of that name, and by helping them publish important books. Lesley passed away unexpectedly recently, and we honor her life by airing her interview with our host, Joan Michelson on Lesley's Show.

Lesley Michaels climbed the corporate ladder in the male-dominated oil and gas industry, and then channeled her frustration with how women didn't help other women at the time, into a crusade to lift up other women. Last year, she published her own book, "On the Shoulders of Mighty Women: A Modern Feminist's Guide to an Equitable, Diverse World."

Listen to Lesley interview Joan and you'll hear Lesley's magical gift for supporting women – and her own insights as well as Joan's.

You'll hear:

  • Why and how to hire creative, innovative people.
  • Why women are natural innovators
  • Joan's stories of driving innovation in Corporate America
  • Lesley's insightful questions
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"You're going to change direction like four times in your career. Maybe eight, maybe 12… I've worked in different industries. So when you have a functional skill, you can be in different industries. And you will grow, you will evolve. You'll reach a point where it's like, okay, so been there, done that. I want to do something else now. That's okay. Be in tune with that and understand that. As one of my guests said on my show, don't just go for a dream that you've always had, because you might have outgrown that dream now. You might be ready for something bigger, better, different." Critical Minerals 101 – Abby Wulf, Critical Minerals Expert, Former Head of Critical Minerals at the Dept. Of Energy, & Center for Critical Minerals Strategy13 Jan 202601:00:20

"Critical minerals and materials…are essential for key economic and national security technologies that help to fuel great sectors in the United States and around the world…We're at a very interesting point in the United States for critical minerals and materials because the US Geological Survey… just released their draft version of their newly updated critical minerals list…(But) they're very difficult to come by. And for a lot of these materials, they are mined as byproducts and co-products. They're used in incredibly low volumes, and so it's very difficult for companies to sort of make money on producing them, which in the United States, of course, to get anybody to do anything they need to be able to make a profit…China has been able to dominate this space and establish a stranglehold over many of these types of supply chains for these different commodities."

Abby Wulf on Electric Ladies Podcast

Critical minerals are foundational to all our technologies, from computers to automobiles, weaponry and national security, among others, but they are also scarce and difficult to procure, especially in the volumes needed. So, what are they and what can we do?

Listen to Abby Wulf, a top critical minerals expert who recently left the Department of Energy as head of Critical Minerals in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. Abby previously served as the founding Executive Director of the Center for Critical Minerals at the nonprofit SAFE.

You'll hear about:

●        What critical minerals are, what makes them "critical," and where they come from.

●        How critical mineral supplies, and therefore the technologies that we rely on every day, are procured and affected by geopolitical dynamics, including Ukraine and China.

●        U.S. sources of these minerals and the financial incentives that were in the Inflation Reduction Act & Infrastructure Act that helped grow the sector….and so much more.

●        Plus, career advice, such as:

"I think that there doesn't necessarily have to be a trade-off between making money and making a difference….I've just been trying to say yes, to every opportunity that has come my way. …There are going to be different fits and starts and seasons to your career. But the one thing that's sort of driven me more than salary even I would say, are really just experiences… There are so many different things to learn…so I've let my curiosity sort of drive where my next career move has gone…. There's no comfort in the growth zone and no growth in the comfort zone." Abby Wulf on Electric Ladies Podcast

Creating A Climate Positive Economy – Aimee Christensen, CEO, Christensen Global & Founder/CEO, Sun Valley Forum22 Jun 202300:54:53

"What I'm hearing is, how do we go faster? How do we transform the key industries that are driving emissions now? And, that can be the solutions to our climate crisis, to our biodiversity crisis. They're really seeking what are the strategies, where should they be going strategically to shift capital, to shift their operations?...I'm seeing is a great eagerness to learn to act, uh, far ahead of the global targets by governments. So working with companies, working with, uh, local and regional and state governments, um, working with innovators to large corporates. Uh, what I'm hearing is how do we go faster and how do we do it in a way that is truly credible?"

Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast

Climate change affects the entire economy – every sector – and therefore, any solution requires a multi-sector, multidimensional approach. But how do those work exactly in real life? What's working?

Aimee Christensen, CEO of Christensen Global and Founder/CEO of the Sun Valley Forum, has been collaborating with top leaders across sectors in this work every day for 30 years, making the hard choices, running the numbers, identifying financial products and metrics.

Listen to Aimee on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this enlightening interview with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How to build successful public-private partnerships.
  • How to align financial assets with growing a climate positive economy.
  • What impact new federal funding, ESG reporting and climate disclosure rules will have.
  • What corporates are doing to transition to net zero operations and why.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"Something that I've tried to do in my career that's been important has been to trust my gut and to be a truth teller….People are looking for community, so even if you think you might be the only one who's raising this issue,…you will find your people.

Making Lost Communities Resilient – Jacqui Patterson, The Chisholm Legacy Project13 Jun 202300:29:18

"We are a resource hub in that we engage with individuals, organizations, and communities who are on the front lines of climate injustice and ensure that they have, they know what informational, technical, financial, strategic resources are out there to strengthen their work…So that's everything from developing research reports to help folks to have the data that they need to make the case…We are helping communities who might be on the front lines of sea-level rise and they know that the waters are rising around them, but they might not know what systems they need to engage with in order to have the infrastructure that they need to, literally weather the storm." Jacqui Patterson on Electric Ladies Podcast

The communities that Jacqui Patterson and her organization and partners are helping are those that have been left out of the conversations about community resilience, because they are still in primitive condition, including lacking running water – in the United States. That's why Jacqui was awarded the 2023 Women and the Green Economy Award by Earth Day Network at the Climate Leadership Gala.

Enter Jacqui Paterson, Founder/CEO of The Chisholm Legacy Project. Listen to her explain how they find these people, how they identify and serve their needs on Electric Ladies Podcast in this inspiring interview with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How Jacqui and her team find these people who are so off the grid that they are nearly invisible.
  • How she identifies their needs and serves them, respecting their values and pace.
  • Why climate risks make this work especially urgent.
  • How you can help
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"First off, reject the myth of scarcity, and embrace the reality of abundance. Bob Marley says, emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds. And recognizing that really there's so much that we can do with that ounce of creativity, boldness, and just vision. The possibilities are endless …Instead of kind of just looking for what's already there…if you were to design your own job, what would it be? If you were to design your own business, what would it be?...Think about that purpose that's going to make them get up in the morning and say, I get to do this today. Because if you have that passion that's going to drive your success."

Investing In Companies For Social Impact - Meredith Shields, Citi Impact Fund Head08 Jun 202300:52:32

Investing In Companies For Social Impact - Meredith Shields, Citi Impact Fund

"We have an allocated pool of capital that we are investing in early stage startups that are solving some of the world's most critical challenges. And…we care just as much about the financial success of the company as we do the impact that that company is going to make on the world. When I say impact… we think about that in two parts. One, who is running this company? Can we deploy more capital into diverse founders, meaning women, people of color, who have traditionally not received the investment capital that's warranted? And the other impact lens that we take is what we would define as 'thematic impact,' which means, what social problems are we solving?...And again, we care about that just as much, if not more than the financial return." Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast

To solve the climate and equity crises, we need funders who are willing to back innovative – aka risky – ventures by people who come from different backgrounds with different perspectives. Some big companies are stepping up with venture funds and the like.

One of them is Citi Impact Fund, which provides capital for early stage companies by a range of traditionally underserved founders whose companies are seeking to make a positive social impact. Listen to the head of that Fund, Meredith Shields, explain how they work and what they invest in – and much more – on Electric Ladies Podcast in this value-packed interview with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How Citi Impact Fund defines "impact" – and how it fits in their focus.
  • Tips for what to look for in investors for your entity – and why
  • What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules mean.
  • What makes up the best board of directors to maximize today's marketplace.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"My advice is to get really clear about what you're good at and what your functional skillset is, and what your managerial and or leadership skillset is. And then if you want to make a difference, think about where that's needed….As the world has changed and as this notion of impact has changed, there've become more opportunities to use my skillset in different ways, like many different ways that didn't exist previously. But I think you have to be open to that as a concept. And so just again, getting really clear on what are you good at and is that portable? And many, many things are in lots of different arenas."

Carbon Neutral Space Travel? - Jane Poynter, Space Perspective30 May 202300:28:15

We want to have teachers go to space."

Jane Poynter at Earth Day Network's Climate Leadership Gala

With all the news coverage of NASA and private companies going to space, including with civilians, it's important to remember the carbon footprint of those journeys. Imagine how much energy those trips use. And, though they are also doing climate research up there, the capsules and rockets are not generally carbon neutral. Can they be?

Jane Poynter says they can be carbon neutral and is putting her money and reputation on the line to prove it. The veteran space executive and Biosphere 2 leader now founded Space Perspectives, with the blessing of Carl Sagan's widow too, to take civilians into space in a carbon neutral way. Listen to Jane Poynter explain how in this extraordinary conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson conducted at the Earth Day Network Climate Leadership Gala (so there will be a lot of background sound).

And it's also the best way to learn." How Iceland Extracts CO2 From The Air, Geothermal - "Begga" Olafsdottir, CEO of ON Power, Iceland18 May 202300:39:42

"At ON Power, we operate three power plants… and combined we produce just under 20% of the energy produced in Iceland…. We are removing carbon from our operations. So… there are low emissions associated with the production ther, from our operations. There's around seven grams of CO2 per produced kilowatt hour, compared to 800, if you produce the electricity using coal."…Plus, we have been operating a carbon removal station, since then, mineralizing and removing from the atmosphere just over 10,000 tons (of emissions) a year."

Begga Olafsdottir on Electric Ladies Podcast

To expand on a CBS News' "60 Minutes" segment this past weekend on how Iceland is capturing CO2 and storing it underground, here is a replay of an in-depth interview I did in Iceland last year about this issue, and how this small Arctic country became an 85% renewable energy economy.

Listen to this fascinating interview, live in Reykjavik, Iceland, with  Berglind "Begga" Olafdottir, CEO of ON Power , with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. ON Power operates the largest geothermal plant in the country, which produces 20% of the total energy Iceland produces. It's also partnering with its sister company Carbfix to remove CO2 from the air.

You'll hear:

  • How ON Power captures the CO2 it emits and mineralizes it.
  • How ON Power is partnering with its sister company Carbfix and with Climeworks to bring ground-breaking technology to market that captures CO2 from the air. not just their own emissions.
  • About their business parks that only take tenants that can share products and byproducts of other tenants, creating a circular economy in each park.
  • How geothermal energy works in Iceland.
  • Plus, great career advice....such as:

"Women, we have a tendency of underestimating ourselves in general, and I think my advice would be that, if you're mid- career and you want to take a step up in the corporate ladder…I think it's important for women not to discount their experience and the knowledge. Try to be a bit bold. If you're applying for something that is advertised, don't not submit the application because you don't check all the boxes, because people are also hired on potential….and you might be the right person." ESG, Impact Investing & the SEC's Climate Rules – Jean Case, Case Foundation18 May 202300:47:22

"The impact investing we focused on, and tried to bring tools and resources together for, really represents areas of investing where you're looking for both a financial return and a social return through the investments that you make. So, it's really that simple. It's asking the question of, 'is there some kind of social return that's exceptional or different in this investment versus the normal investments I would make?'…I like to remind everyone that every investment has impact. The question is what impact does it have?"

Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast

Impact and ESG (environment, social, governance) investing are often confused, and yet today, especially as the Securities and Exchange Commission finalizes its climate risk disclosure rules, the investment community is paying a lot more attention to the impact of investment decisions on the environment and all stakeholders.

One of the people who has been at the forefront of using investment funding to make a positive impact is Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation, chair of the National Geographic Society board, author of the best-selling book, "Be Fearless," and former SVP of AOL. Listen to Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this engaging interview with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How she and the Case Foundation see the differences in impact investing vs. ESG investing.
  • How ESG investing is really about minimizing risk as well as maximizing return, and why climate risk is financial.
  • What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules will have.
  • What the boards of directors of the future will do and how they will need to adapt structurally to a changing economy and marketplace
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"Ladies, you need to own it….And by owning it, I mean, bring confidence that you've got what it takes. Own things that will make you a more profitable, build wealth for yourself, own that.…it's hard for a lot of us to do the things that we think we naturally can't be good at….(but) You can be trained, you can learn into almost anything. I see so many really capable, smart, awesome women and they just really need to own that."

"Chasing Carbon Zero" – Melissa Lott, Director of Research, Global Energy Policy, Columbia University18 May 202300:43:16

"The goal is net zero, which is a balance between the emissions we put into the air and the emissions we take out….We have solutions and…it's not that the technologies don't work, it's not that we don't know how to use them. It's because  we haven't made the choice to actually use them at the size and scale that we need to, as quickly as we want to, to avoid all these really terrible, terrible impacts of a changing climate."

Melissa Lott on Electric Ladies Podcast

An extraordinary new Nova documentary on PBS hosted by veteran science journalist Miles O'Brien gives a deep dive into what "carbon zero" actually means – in plain English for us non-scientists – and how we can get there in time to save the planet and our lifestyle. How?

Listen to Melissa Lott, Director of Research at the Center for Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, and the lead scientists in the documentary, explain it in ways we can all understand in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

  • What carbon zero really is – and how to get there
  • The impact of the new trifecta of federal legislation – the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Investment Act and the CHIPS and Science Act.
  • Where we get our electricity from today and what has to change to eliminate emissions
  • The impact on each industry – in ways that may surprise you
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"Create your path because it probably hasn't been created before. And follow your passions and the things you want to contribute to…At the end of the day….it's about understanding where you want to have impact and then creating the path forward….When I started in this work, the thing I do now did not exist. It didn't, now it does. And I'm so glad that I positioned myself to be able to do the work that I do today because it speaks to me on many, many levels and it brings together different pieces of me, and it's a way that I can contribute. So,….It's about how are you going to create and be that change you want to see?"

Electric Ladies Podcast listeners requested that we air a collection of career advice from our various guests, and we heard you. Here's our second collage of advice from five amazing women from different fields.

The last question in each of our Electric Ladies Podcast episodes is asking for career advice, especially for midcareer women who want to make a difference.  Listeners reached out to us and asked us to publish an episode now and then that is only that advice, so we are doing just that.

This week, you'll hear career advice from:

·       Erika Wollam-Nichols, President of famous music venue, The Bluebird Café in Nashville, TN

·       Genevieve Cullen, President of the Electric Drive Transportation Association

·       Trisa Thompson, former Chief Sustainability Officer of Dell Technologies

·       Kristen Siemen, Chief Sustainability Officer of General Motors

·       Karen Alonardo, former VP of ESG at Navex software (founder of ESG software company acquired by Navex)

Here's a hint:

"I do think what's really valuable is to own your expertise. Know what you're good at and absolutely highlight it, monetize it, but don't be afraid to keep adding to it. Don't get stuck in a silo.…Just like, oh, this is where the industry is going and I should get smart about this. So, you have to always keep learning, adding to your skill set, particularly as it like reinforces the thing that you love."

Massive Study On Risk, Climate, Gender Differences - Sarah Cumbers, Lloyd's Register Foundation20 Apr 202300:43:33

"We want data is going to drive impact….It's not as simple as saying that men or women are more worried (about climate change). We need to look at those granular differences at the country level. And, particularly actually when it comes to climate change, it's country income that has an impact. So, women tend to be more worried about it than men in high income countries."

Sarah Cumbers on Electric Ladies Podcast

Do you feel at risk from climate change? In a massive, global ground-breaking new study, Lloyd's Register Foundation and Gallup found that men and women differ on their perceptions of risk across a range of issues.

Listen to Dr. Sarah Cumbers of Lloyd's Register Foundation who led the research explain their findings and what we can all learn from it in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How they reached 120,000 people across the globe in 121 countries – and how they conducted the survey.
  • How they and their interviewees defined and perceived "risk."
  • How they created a Resilience Index for individuals, communities and countries.
  • How and why men and women perceive the risks from climate change differently in different countries – and which factors matter.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"My advice would be to really think about what you bring to your career that's unique to you. I spent a lot of my career working for the public sector in the UK thinking about the use of evidence in healthcare. And I didn't for a moment think about, until the job at Lloyd's Register Foundation came up, about the fact that actually that was transferrable to a different field….So it's about thinking outside of the box, and thinking about how you could apply what you do, what you know, your network, in a different field. and just broadening your horizons." Geothermal Energy 101 – Sarah Golden, Greenbiz, VP of Energy12 Apr 202300:45:28

Geothermal Energy 101 – Sarah Golden, Greenbiz VP of Energy

"Geothermal very broadly put, is just the collection of energy from the heat that comes from the earth's core. And so it's, it's tapped into by just going to underground reservoirs and capturing some of that heat. There's a couple of broad categories I'd like to split geothermal into from the outset, and that's geothermal for electricity generation versus geothermal for direct heat applications. And so primarily with geothermal and electricity generation, it is done through drilling into the earth's crust and tapping into either dry steam… or flash steam…and using that to turn a turbine to generate electricity. The other form in direct applications is usually just tapping into the ground to do some sort of heat pump where it's primarily used for heating buildings or heating water." Sarah Golden on Electric Ladies Podcast

The new trifecta of federal legislation – the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Investment Act and the CHIPS and Science Act – include a range of funding for alternative energy sources, one of which is geothermal. But most people don't know what geothermal is, so today we'll find out.

Listen to Sarah Golden, VP of Energy at Greenbiz – who traveled with Joan to Iceland last year in part to explore their geothermal energy – in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

  • How geothermal works.
  • How geothermal energy gets to the grid to provide electricity.
  • How Iceland became a country run on 85% renewable energy, in part by using geothermal energy.
  • How the by-products from geothermal energy companies in Iceland are being used by other companies in a truly circular economy.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"What's top of mind for me right now is, around recognizing the finite nature of what you are able to do and the way the sort of obsession that our jobs have and the way our economy is set up for productivity and churning things out…….So what I'm working on right now, and I would encourage other people to do, is to respect our finite nature, not buy into the never ending cycle of hustle culture and be thoughtful about where you really want to spend your time and design your work and personal life to make space for that without trying to please everyone else." Mobilizing Women's Influence – Paula Noble Fellingham06 Jan 202600:49:11

"People care about the diversity because diversity makes teams stronger. And, and this is research based. And so they can say what they want, but those who know that there is strength in diversity, they'll continue on in spite of the, you know, the outcry on the other end….There's research that shows that when the lives of billions of women are improved, here's what happens. Number one, there's better female leadership. Number two, there's stronger education and more equality with women and girls. There's healthier national economies. There's research. …There's stronger families and my friends, there's greater peace." Paula Noble Fellingham on Electric Ladies Podcast

To start off the year, we're talking with an expert who has been mobilizing people all over the globe for decades, especially women. Women can make a huge impact right now, if we leverage our strengths and influence. How?

Listen to Paula Noble Fellingham talk about her suggestions in this engaging discussion with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

  • How women can leverage their influence much more effectively, building campaigns.
  • How to make the case for diversity, and specifically for elevating women to leadership roles.
  • How more women leaders advance the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"Kick up your ask, because so many women need to be more confident and they need to ask for the promotion. However, they need to be qualified for the promotion…. (S)ay, 'this is what I've done in the last year. This is the how I've helped the ROI of this company. This is what I can do in the future,' and have it written and say it in a way, and this is so important. Say it in a way that doesn't create an adversarial relationship, but invites them. So here's a beautiful way to say it. I invite you to consider the possibility of this because I am qualified…I am qualified because of the things I've done, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and the things I know I can do, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to help this company move forward." Women Making History in Climate – Rose-May Lucotte, ChangeNow04 Apr 202300:36:51

"Now we are leading a new revolution, which is a environmental and ecology and social revolution…. We launched ChangeNow in 2017 as a social enterprise to accelerate the environmental and social transition…. and the ChangeNow Summit has become in a few years, the world's largest event for the planet. We gather 1000 solutions from all over the world. We gather over 30,000 people in Paris, all committed to make change happen and to accelerate change…. Entrepreneurs, but also, investors, corporates, media talents, so that altogether we can connect and accelerate change."

Rose-May Lucotte on Electric Ladies Podcast

As Women's History Month comes to a close, we are taking one more week to celebrate unknown women doing extraordinary work for the planet and people. ChangeNow, a relatively young company connecting changemakers working for positive environmental and social change, just awarded their Women in Sustainability Awards.

Listen to Rose May Lucotte, Cofounder and Chief Operations Officer of ChangeNow, from Paris, France on their huge annual event and the 25 amazing women they honored in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

  • How ChangeNow grew to over 30,000 attendees at their annual Summit in only a few short years, including accounting for when events were shuttered due to covid.
  • How they chose the 25 Women in Sustainability to honor this year

  • What surprised her most about the women.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"I will say an advice I was given at the very beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, which is, never under underestimate a meeting. When I mean you're in your professional life and also personal life, there are some meetings that seem to be very relevant. You have a lot of expectations. And, you have meetings that are random or you don't really know why you've been connected to this person. You have time to go to this meeting, and actually those meetings sometimes are the most powerful ones. So many times I experienced that. So really, never under underestimated meeting."

Neighborhood Climate Impact 30 Years Forward - Jessica Filante Farrington, AT&T, Director of Global Sustainability29 Mar 202300:39:32

"We have now forward looking data, data that allows us to look 30 years into the future and understand how and where we're vulnerable. The different hazards, by the way that we have, are flood, wind, drought, and wildfire. And what we're doing with that is, we're integrating it into the network design and planning processes, as well as the vulnerability modeling for assets that are in the ground today."

Jessica Filante Farrington on Electric Ladies Podcast

We all experience how we lose power to our homes, businesses, cell phones, etc. in the devastating destruction caused by extreme storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and more, including due to the rising impact of climate change. I've always wondered what it would take to shore up that infrastructure that undergirds our everyday lives.  Well now a partnership between AT&T, Argonne National Labs and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency are figuring out how to better mitigate it – and its free for all of us.

Listen to Jessica Filante Farrington, AT&T, Director of Global Sustainability describe the partnership and its new portal, and what it could do for us in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

  • How the new ClimRR portal will help cities, companies, real estate developers, and really anyone predict the climate impact in their area for 30 years into the future and increase their resilience.
  • How AT&T will use the portal to shore up its own network so its customers have more consistent cell phone service especially in weather crises.
  • How the new Infrastructure Investment Act funding will make a difference.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"Don't be hesitant to jump into the sustainability space because you don't feel you have the technical chops yet. That doesn't mean you don't have to get them, but like don't let it discourage you at the onset. And it can be an advantage because you're often communicating with people who are not climate savvy. And I guess the other piece in terms of how much risk to bring into your life,…During Covid, a lot of us parents became sort of the chief resilience officers of our own household. So, how do we manage all the risk and how do we adapt?... I just feel so passionate about inviting more women and having more women to work with in this space."

Career Advice From 5 Electric Ladies Guests In 2022 - By Listener Demand!21 Mar 202300:24:03

Electric Ladies Podcast listeners requested that we air a collection of career advice from our various guests and here it is!  In fact, we're making it a new continuing part of our series.

The last question in each of our Electric Ladies Podcast episodes is asking for career advice, especially for midcareer women who want to make a difference.  Listeners reached out to us and asked us to publish an episode now and then that is only that advice, so that's what we're doing.

Starting today, we will now air a collage of career advice from about five (5) of our guests once a month.

This week, you'll hear career advice from:

·       Natalie Jaresko, former finance minister of Ukraine

·       Kerry Bannigan, Founder of the Fashion Impact Fund and head of the Conscious Fashion Campaign

·       Julie Lenzer, Chief Innovation Officer, in this episode from the University of Maryland

·       Kristina Wyatt, Deputy General Counsel and in this episode, SVP of Global Regulatory Climate Disclosure (now Chief Sustainability Officer) at Persefoni

For example, this from Kristina Wyatt:

"What's happening now is that as this focus on climate….on diversity equity, and inclusion, all of these things are making their way up to the board. They're making their way to the C-suite, they're becoming central investor issues. They're financial issues…. What we need to have is these women who are sitting over in the CSOs office to make sure that they've got the chops on the financial piece, right? So, if you need to take courses, learn about how to read financial statements, get very familiar with your company's financials, understand balance sheets, understand income statements, understand cash flow statements and how they work so that you can really speak the financial talk and understand how your sustainability issues integrate with your financial issues." Making Our Infrastructure Resilient - Gwenaelle Avice Huet, Schneider Electric Sustainability13 Mar 202300:41:23

"If we want to accelerate all the efforts in order to decarbonize and to fight against climate change, we have to go three times faster, three times stronger. We have all the technologies, but how to speed it up, how to make sure that it's deployed even faster," Gwenaelle Avice Huet on Electric Ladies Podcast

There's a quiet transformation happening in our communities that will literally save lives, and it's led by women who don't make the headlines. It's the infrastructure that undergirds our everyday lives.  These are the systems that we only notice when they break down, or we have service delays or other problems, including when extreme weather takes them out.

You'll hear about:

  • How the new Infrastructure Investment Act funding will make a difference.
  • How her experience in France and in various aspects of the energy and sustainability sector, gives her a unique perspective.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"I would say first sometimes we are, as a woman, we are, I would say forbidding ourselves some evolutions because we think it's either inappropriate or because we want to have the right balance between private life and professional life. And we fear that an evolution could jeopardize this balance. I would say that you have to think internally how to make it happen and never give up on what you feel inside." Making Computers Sustainably - Page Motes, Head of Sustainabilty, Dell Technologies28 Feb 202300:33:24

"It has to be cross-functional…It's really leaders in the product group, in global operations, in services and other groups that are coming together as a governance body and saying, 'What do we need to do holistically and cross-functionally? And what are all of the different parts that add up to a new potential outlook or approach?' And, 'How do we go about this as a collective?' So it is a different way of thinking entirely as you wrestle with these innovation implications."

Page Motes on Electric Ladies Podcast

Dell Technologies has been a leader in how to integrate sustainable business practices for over 20 years, and now they developed a concept for an eco-conscious computer.

Listen to Page Motes, head of Sustainability at Dell Technologies, in this fascinating interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson tell us about that new computer and how they transitioned their operations to use less energy and water and generate less waste.

You'll hear:

  • How Dell is manufacturing computers using less energy and water, and generating less waste.
  • What they are hearing from their customers about the need to be eco-conscious, as well as from their suppliers and employees.
  • How they are designing this new eco-conscious computer, including using sustainable raw materials and accessing the all-important minerals from non-conflict sources.
  • The impact of the climate change provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPS and Science Act on manufacturers.
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"You need to open your aperture a little bit more in the opportunities.…(Most people) just don't realize all the different places in a company, especially today where social impact, ESG, and real purpose-driven work happens. They assume it only falls in human resources, diversity and inclusion, corporate social responsibility. They don't realize that it happens in a broader group of places. And so, the first thing that I really do is…really map out all the places in that company where that kind of work can happen. and I think what they find quickly is their avenues for growth explode."

Carbon Credits 101 - Lucy Hargreaves, Patch platform21 Feb 202300:22:15

"On the supply side, we work with project developers who are standing up projects all around the world. Um, anything ranging from nature-based solutions to some of the more, uh, sort of frontier engineered technologies that you might have heard of, like direct air capture…and list their inventory on our platform to sell the carbon credits that they're generating through those projects. And then on the demand side, we work with corporations to enable the purchase of vetted carbon credits via our platform." Lucy Hargreaves on Electric Ladies Podcast

Managing carbon in the air is job one to keep the planet from heating over 1.5 degrees. There are many ways to do that, and the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report and many others, found that to do so, we need to both stop adding carbon emissions to the air and extract carbon from the air. This requires massive innovation and risk. One company thinks they can help expedite the process by creating a kind of "Airbnb for carbon credits." Huh?

Listen to Lucy Hargreaves, head of Climate Policy at Patch, to find out about it in this enlightening interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • What carbon credits are and how they work.
  • The kinds of projects that Patch is discovering doing this innovation work and leveraging carbon credits to help fund it.
  • How to tell when carbon credits are a strategy by a company trying to avoid reducing their emissions.
  • How to talk climate science and policy to lawmakers so they understand it and act on it.
  • Plus, insightful career advice such as….:

"The first thing I think is just like, be really clear on what your goals are. Really think about why are you doing what you're doing, what motivates you? Um, and, and just get some clarity around that…(and) be extremely opportunistic and don't be afraid to take risks….(M)ost of my opportunities that I've had have came from me putting my hand up, taking a chance, doing something that feels scary and terrifying, but that is aligned to my core goal and mission of working on climate and sustainability."

Using Landscapes To Combat Climate Change - Pamela Conrad, Landscape Architect14 Feb 202300:23:14

Using Landscapes To Combat Climate Change - Pamela Conrad, Landscape Architect

"Landscape architecture involves the planning, design, management, and nurturing of the exterior built and natural environments. So, landscape architects is a professional degree and…we design places like parks and campuses, streetscapes trails, plazas, residences, and other projects that strengthen communities. And … our work also involves increasing resilience to climate impacts and drawing down carbon in communities in an equitable way." Pamela Conrad on Electric Ladies Podcast

You might take for granted how lovely the park near your home is, or your corporate or university campus,  but every inch of it was deliberately designed (unless it's a national park), from the way it uses water and integrates with the area's water systems, to the types of plants, trees and grass – including to mitigate climate change. How?

Listen to this fascinating interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with Pamela Conrad, Landscape Architect, and you'll look at parks and campuses in a whole new way.

You'll hear:

  • How water systems are designed in landscapes to conserve and reuse water, including integrating with the nearby buildings.
  • What a difference the Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment Act will make for communities that want to restore their natural ecosystems,
  • How landscaping can mitigate climate change, and reduce emissions, energy use and maintenance.
  • What "Go Beyond Zero" means and how to do it.
  • Plus, insightful career advice such as….:

"One, knowing and understanding your own strengths and then asking, 'what action is needed around climate action?' And then especially, 'where do you see the gaps?' And then fill it, jump into those spaces …And then the third… is to ask yourself that question of what brings you joy…And I think that to make sure that what you're doing is something that you love, it can help prevent burnout."

Understanding Community Transportation Needs – Julie A.White, NCDOT31 Jan 202300:55:05

"So we went out to the communities and we met with them and said,' what do you want in your downtown? There's this rail line that goes through the middle of your downtown. What's your vision for that?' And they all said, we think rail is a really big part of our future right now….We'd love to use that to spur economic development in our downtown. We think it creates foot traffic and then creates economic opportunity….How can you help us as small towns? How do we make the most of that?" Julie White on Electric Ladies Podcast

Public transportation today looks very different than ever before. It's because communities are different, "commuting" is different, and what makes up "public transportation" is different. Covid is only part of it. Systems have changed, priorities have changed and funding options have changed, especially with the new federal legislation too. How so?

Listen to this fascinating interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with Julie White, Deputy Secretary of Transportation in North Carolina, a state that take "multi-modal" to a whole new level.

You'll hear:

  • How communities look at how they get from point A to point B in this brave new world of mobility.

  • What kind of impact the new federal legislation and funding is having and will have as it rolls out across the country.
  • What "institutionalizing change" means and how NDCOT is doing it.
  • Plus, insightful career advice from Julie's many years in state government and transportation, such as….:

"First, have a proactive plan.  So, if you don't know where you want to go, you cannot get there, right? So, map out what is it you want to do with your career and map out a proactive plan to get there. And then, the second step is, be willing to throw the plan away…. But the point of the plan was, I'm not willing to let life happen to me. I'm going to make life happen. We have the life we largely have, the life we build."

Solutions To Our Waste Problem - Melissa Modica, Waste Harmonica24 Jan 202300:34:32

Solutions To Our Waste Problem - Melissa Modica, Waste Harmonica

"We're all doing our part, but the big manufacturers producing the products, we need to go back there. We need to say, how can we do this better?... Clients don't realize that waste and recycling all contribute to that whole initiative with ESG..." Melissa Modica on Electric Ladies Podcast

A fundamental part of any environmental or ESG (environment-social-governance) initiative has to include managing the waste that our businesses and our lifestyles generate. All that stuff you have delivered? Packaging waste. The truth about the waste management system in the U.S. is pathetic, but there are talented people working on it day and night.

Listen to Melissa Modica of Waste Harmonica share some of the creative solutions their clients are using in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. Melissa is Director of Business Development at Wast Harmonica, and brings many years and credentials to the waste management challenge.

You'll hear about:

  • How the current recycling system is ineffective and inefficient
  • What manufacturers, cities, municipalities and MURFs – the facilities that manage our waste – need to do better and faster
  • How the Infrastructure Bill & Inflation Reduction Act are helping
  • How ESG standards and reporting systems are accelerating waste management improvements
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"Always speak up, you know, put yourself out there. If it's a no, keep going….If you're having a bad day today, let it go. Tomorrow's a new day. Don't bring it into your next workday. You have to just stay focused." Melissa Modica on Electric Ladies Podcast

EV Charging On City Streets – Tiya Gordon, COO, itselectric17 Jan 202300:48:13

"There's a huge barrier for ev adoption in this country…it's lack of public charging infrastructure… So, my co-founder and I said, there's got to be a solution…And it came to us that…why can't we just make the (apartment) buildings the source of the energy instead of having to put in all this new infrastructure on the street?....And then to incentivize that building that we're pulling that power from, we're revenue sharing back to them. So they're creating a public amenity, they're earning money every month, drivers are able to charge and park, and cities are able to meet their decarb goals." Tiya Gordon on Electric Ladies Podcast

One of the biggest hurdles to electric vehicle adoption is access to charging. With millions of people living in cities, what if they could charge similar to how they pay for parking?  Well, Its Electric has found a way to do just that and they are bringing it out one city block at a time. How?

Listen to this fascinating interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with Tiya Gordon, COO and Cofounder of itselectric and host Joan Michelson. Its Electric is a novel EV charging infrastructure that leverages the power that's already available to the residences on a given block to provide EV charging. Tiya is a designer, who went from designing museum exhibits to designing this novel charging system – and share that story too.

You'll hear:

  • How Its Electric works – enabling EV charging and helping the residences and the grid at the same time.
  • How it's a democratic (small "d") solution that works on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • How it would serve a huge potential EV market that today has no where to charge.
  • Which legislation would support this concept and which would make it harder to provide EV charging.

Plus, insightful career advice from Tiya's evolution from museum designer to EV charging entrepreneur:

"I would encourage people that, especially if they have that experience, if they can make that terrifying leap from a larger, more established career path to something in climate tech, something in the world that is new and fresh and innovative, but needs that steady hand of an experienced career, that's where their value can be tremendous, because then they're bringing in that expertise, they're bringing in that calm, that ease, but then they're helping a company that's doing something that's truly innovative, achieve what they're out to do." A Creative Leverage For Good – Kate Williams, 1% For The Planet30 Dec 202500:54:00

"1% for the planet…the way it works is that we have businesses who are our members, and they're actually supporting environmental partners at the level of 1% of revenues….You invest in the things that matter and the planet matters.…(to) drive impact at scale. And so, in terms of that scale, last year we certified US$100million of support going from these companies to environmental partners….When a company joins, they pay a dues fee to us, but then the rest of their 1%, they will give directly to environmental partners….And then at the end of each year, we certify that giving."

ate Williams on Electric Ladies Podcast

This time of year we are likely making donations, but this episode is about a creative way to make a bigger difference – and all year long with the normal stuff you buy. You'll hear about businesses, partnering with nonprofits, leveraging each other's strengths and networks to have a much larger impact. We sure need to have a much larger impact right now.

So, how do we scale donations and impact? Listen to Kate Williams, CEO of 1% For The Planet on how they help companies of all sizes and shapes leverage and certify their donations strategically in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear about:

  • How 1% For The Planet works – and why they certify their members' donations.
  • How their Planet Impact Fund works – and the four areas they focus on.
  • Stories of donations that made a big difference, and creative ways they did it
  • Trends they have seen I the corporate donations over the past 10 years.
  • Plus, insightful career advice, such as…

"A couple things. One is, step forward and step up before you think you might be ready.… Becoming a CEO or C-suite can be one way that you progress, but you can also just become really deeply knowledgeable in a particular area.… Sometimes as women and just as humans, we can maybe hold ourselves back. So, I would say like, step up before you're ready.…(S)upport appears when once I've taken the step….The other thing is stay open to serendipity…We may forget that serendipity is sometimes how the opportunities that we get to step into are shown to us…. So, stay open." Kate Williams on Electric Ladies Podcast

ESG On Corporate Boards - Helle Jorgenson, CEO of Competent Boards10 Jan 202300:47:53

"How do we deal with dilemmas? How do we think unthinkable? You know, the climate, ESG, human rights issues, diversity, equity, inclusion, supply chain issues, cyber security, integrity of data, incentive plans, all of those, the future of good corporate governance, transparency, anti-corruption. All of those different issues that have been there for a long, long time, but been kind of like voluntary more and less, and suddenly they are really coming at the top of the agenda for the board of directors." Helle Jorgenson on Electric Ladies Podcast

When there's a scandal or a huge failure at a big company or a famous one – like the collapse of FTX Crypto Exchange – you hear questions like, "where was the board of directors?"  So, what is the role of the Board and how are environment, social and governance issues, including climate, diversity and covid, changing who is on them and why?

Listen to Helle Jorgenson, CEO and Founder of Competent Boards training programs for board members, and people who want to sit on boards, in this episode of Electric Ladies podcast in this valuable conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. They specialize in training on ESG issues, and, full disclosure, Joan is also now on their ESG faculty.

You'll hear:

  • What boards of directors actually do – and don't do
  • How covid, climate and the resurgence of social justice movements are transforming boards, from who sits on them to what they do.
  • How, when and why boards focus on ESG issues.
  • How much they serve customers vs. serving investors.
  • How to prepare to be a successful board member.
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"If you look five years out, 10 years out, what is it that you want to look back at and say, Yes, I was part of this, or, or I did this…There's a ton of roles and…if you look at these 17 biggest pain points in the world (the 17 sustainable development goals)…and saying, Okay, where is it that I can make a difference? …I want to educate myself in this, so I can go out and help organizations, perhaps even the organization that you are working in right now."

The Nuts & Bolts of ESG Software – Karen Alonardo, VP of ESG at NAVEX03 Jan 202300:52:11

"Who's my customer, who's my partner?...Make sure you're aligning with their ESG programs…Think of ESG as part of your operational DNA. Right. Just keep it as part of how you run your business and just make it more of an integrated component versus kind of the separate thing."

Karen Alonardo on Electric Ladies Podcast

If you're confused about how to capture environment, social and governance (ESG) data, and weighing different software systems, you're not alone. It's a burgeoning industry as investors, companies and consumers – and regulators, including the SEC – demand more disclosure.

For a good download on the nuts and bolts of ESG systems, listen to Karen Alonardo, VP of ESG at NAVEX at the time of this interview with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. Karen joined NAVEX when the company she founded and built, CSRware was acquired by NAVEX in 2020.

  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"(D)ifferent people are motivated by different things…. I had to take what I was good at, like what I already understood, and then I emerged it with something that I learned, something new…So maybe take a class or two in kind of the feel good areas that you like and see if something pops, you know, see if something aligns with your background, what you've done in the past, cuz you don't want to negate the fact that you've got 15 years' experience….So leverage your background….and make sure you can financially support yourself."

How Ford Built The F-150 EV - Linda Zhang, Ford F-150 EV Chief Engineer20 Dec 202200:26:23

How Ford Built The F-150 EV - Linda Zhang, Ford F-150 EV Chief Engineer

"We talked to all customers. So we talked to truck customers, because part of it is, this is such a big population of customers that we want to evolve into an electric…We also talked to customers who weren't truck owners, but may have wanted to be and didn't go there for whatever reason that might be. And those would be pain points that then we'd have to try address right. And actually what came out of this is, really the building blocks for how we came up on this truck." Linda Zhang at MOVE 2022

Converting the best-selling truck in America into an electric vehicle is a huge risk. The Ford F-150 has a macho image, which is not the typical EV buyer, to put it gently. So the massive success of the F-150 Lightning really shows the evolution of the electric vehicle and of the market for them.

How did they do it? Listen to this fascinating interview with the woman who literally made it happen, Linda Zhang, Chief Engineer of the F-150 Lightning. It was conducted at a huge conference known as MOVE 2022, Reimagining Mobility, in front of an audience of hundreds of people, re-airing here on Electric Ladies Podcast.

You'll hear:

  • How Linda and her team at Ford started the design process and decisions they made
  • What new innovations they put in this truck, besides converting it to an EV, that were gamechangers
  • Who is buying this truck, unexpectedly so, and what it tells us about the future of electric vehicles.
  • How they are managing the supply chain issues while reducing their carbon footprint.

Here's insightful career advice from Linda's colleague Suzy Deering, Chief Marketing Officer of Ford ….

""Number one, go learn something from scratch and get really, really get dirty. Like get in there and understand from a scrappy standpoint. You're going to fail and you're going to learn things and then some things are going to work, some things aren't….if you're not uncomfortable, then you're not growing. And if you're not growing, you're not learning. If you're not learning, you're not per, you're not progressing….and Don't chase the title."

Why Heat Pumps Are "In" - Lauren Salz, Co-Founder & CEO of Sealed13 Dec 202200:39:08

"There's a few reasons why a building owner might want to electrify their building and get heat pumps. One is that it is a better experience for the people who are living in those units. It's really, really quiet. it's healthier, it's safer…and then secondly, there should be less maintenance cost over time. Just having one system that's really efficient." Lauren Salz on Electric Ladies Podcast

Heat pumps are suddenly getting a spotlight. Between big financial incentives for them in the new U.S. Inflation Reduction Act's climate provisions, Germany's ramp up of these pumps to help manage the cold winter as Germany stops using Russian oil and gas, and even Consumer Reports doing a "heat pumps buying guide," you might wonder what heat pumps are and how they can help mitigate climate change.

Enter Lauren Salz, Co-Founder and CEO of Sealed, an innovative heat pump company that helps homeowners reduce their energy bills. Listen to Lauren explain how these work and more in this engaging conversation with host Joan Michelson on Electric Ladies Podcast.

You'll hear:

  • How heat pumps work, including how they reduce energy bills.
  • What financial incentives are out there to reduce the cost of installing heat pumps in your home or apartment building or commercial building.
  • How Sealed works to help homeowners and property managers find the right heat and air conditioning systems for their budget and buildings (HVACs), including questions to ask.
  • Plus, insightful career advice ….

"Career women who are looking to progress in their career (should) really be raising your hand for opportunities and letting people know at work that here's where you want to be heading and you're looking for help and advice on how to get there.…Because…sometimes people can kind of get stuck a little bit in middle management, and the way to progress is to let people know that you are ambitious and you want to keep on progressing in your career and you want to know specifically how you can go and do that."

Famous Music Venue Goes Sustainable - Erika Wollam-Nichols, The Bluebird Café

"We have staff members who are very, very conscious of sustainability. One of our servers does our recycling…and we've had to really step into how can we find space for those kind of things, even composting…because obviously we have food waste, but our kitchen is not much bigger than the bathroom here.…I would also add that we…. found a local partner here in town (for the merchandise) who prints in town and buys local and buys national product so that we're able to feel like we're building community… with all of that too."

Erika Wollam-Nichols on Electric Ladies Podcast

As you venture out for live performances, including music, you might notice which ones are practicing sustainability, like the renowned Bluebird Café in Nashville, Tennessee. It's a woman-founded and women-led venue that has launched a who's-who of country music stars from Taylor Swift to Garth Brooks and beyond.

Listen to Bluebird Café president Erika Wollam-Nichols explain how they do sustainability – and the history of the club – in this live interview at the Bluebird on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How Erika brought her Massachusetts-born passion for sustainability to this landmark in Nashville.
  • How they have solved a range of challenges in going green in such a small and historic venue.
  • Who has played there over the years and why it's such a special place for songwriters.
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"What I think about in those situations is listening and paying attention….When I came in here and, and just spent time looking around and talking to the staff and just seeing where are the holes, where are the opportunities?....I want to keep a positive attitude and be solution-based as opposed to victim-based….We were closed for 16 months for the pandemic…But that was like, okay. So what's our opportunity with the pandemic? And, and we found some, and we changed some of our operations that we would not have had an easy time changing."

Sustainable Holiday Shopping – Kerry Bannigan, Conscious Fashion Campaign22 Nov 202200:37:55

"The fashion industry is a supply chain….but the reality is it's a human chain. Nothing is made that we wear that does not go through many human hands. And so really for me, the environmental aspects are extremely important. But.. it's really about brands being more open about their supply chain. And, specifically, when there is a red flag to be concerned about in someone that they've worked with, they need to let their peers in the space know, so that they are no longer ordering from that place. And instead, take their orders and their finances to factories that are doing it right…The environment that people are working in, for example, and then how their pay is and their education and how they're looked after." Kerry Bannigan on Electric Ladies Podcast

As holiday shopping 2022 kicks off with this Thanksgiving week, in this interview, Kerry Bannigan, CEO and Founder of the Conscious Fashion Campaign and Fashion Impact Fund, reminds us to shop sustainably, especially if you're buying clothes. There are a range of new sustainable fabrics, organic fabrics with nontoxic dyes and cool stuff made from recycled materials (someone sent me shirts made from recycled water bottles!).

Listen to Kerry explain how the fashion industry is evolving (or not) to meet this moment when sustainability and social responsibility are taking a spot on the runway, in this powerful interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • How the fashion industry really works and prioritizes.
  • Why fashion consumers are demanding more sustainable fashion and corporate responsibility – on the part of all players in the fashion world.
  • What the fashion industry needs to do now to evolve to meet the moment and ESG reporting requirements.
  • How really bad "fast fashion" really is for the environment and the workers, and what you can do with your clothing dollars.

Plus, great career advice....including…

"First of all, it's, and it's just a question I spot with myself often is 'am I happy?' What would make me happy? Drown out the noise. And it doesn't matter how crazy it sounds. It's just do it…. I think it's about researching what's out there, finding out, if you can sit in on events… There is so much out there and there is so much to learn and you shouldn't have to do it by leaving one thing which is seen as your secure paycheck...You shouldn't have to jump that to something else, to be able to try it. We need to be more open...and sharing what we're doing and bring people on the journey with us." Kerry Bannigan on Electric Ladies Podcast

The State Of EVs - Genevieve Cullen, Electric Drive Transportation Assn.15 Nov 202200:32:18

"The vision for electrification is based on the maturing of the technology. Getting it to a price point, a performance point, and a consumer acceptance point, where this actually can serve all of these consumer needs and we can make it affordable and it works…. This is what being a transportation provider looks like… Also, in just a growing access to public (charging) infrastructure where people, rural and urban, whether they need it or not, want to be able to see infrastructure to know that if I had to (charge my car), I could." Genevieve Cullen on Electric Ladies Podcast

Electric vehicles are on a roll. Sales are booming, doubling every month almost. Automakers offer about 70 models now, have dozens more coming, and committed to going only-electric by 2035. And, we have the massive rollout of charging stations from the massive new federal legislation.  And these vehicles are cool. About 76% of buyers of the new the all-electric version of the iconic Ford F-150 truck are new to EVs, and tax credits are now usable at the time of purchase.

For a master class in where we are exactly in electric vehicles, listen to this fascinating interview with the master of EVs, Genevieve Cullen, President of the Electric Drive Transportation Assn., the EV trade group, on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson. Genevieve has been in the EV business for decades.  (Editor's Note: This was recorded live at an event, so the audio is a bit less clear than usual. Thanks for understanding.)

You'll hear:

Climate News For The Masses - Anna Robertson, The Cool Down08 Nov 202200:48:45

"Anytime we've had to do something hard in human history, we've needed the public to understand and get on board with this future. And so, what we're trying to do is quite simply to reach mainstream audiences…become America's first mainstream climate brand and reach people who do have a level of concern and awareness about what's happening, but don't know where to start or what to do."

Anna Robertson on Electric Ladies Podcast

As we face the momentous midterm election in American history (and PLEASE VOTE), one of the issues on the ballot in the faces of the candidates and control of the Senate and House is whether the country continues to pass legislation like the Infrastructure Act and the Inflation Reduction Act that address climate change to save our communities, air, water, lives and livelihoods. But we need more information reaching the "unconverted," or people who still don't understand climate change and what they can do.

Enter Anna Robertson, co-founder of The Cool Down, a new nonpartisan news media platform designed specifically to reach the masses, the confused, the "unconverted" about climate change-related issues and solutions. Anna is a master storyteller who spent decades in network news, mostly at ABC News, and a mom who has personally experienced the threats of climate change. Listen to her explain it on Electric Ladies Podcast in this engaging conversation with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • What she and her family experienced that was her wake up call to use her talents to address climate change more broadly
  • What kinds of stories they are doing and plan to do to reach a broader audience than the typical "eco" audience.
  • Why language matters and how to talk about climate change to reach more people
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"It's really important to me that not only am I coming to work every day and making money, but I'm also doing something that I feel is making an impact in the world. And at different times in my life, that's been different things. And I think tapping into what you need in your life at any specific moment.…And so always evaluating what you need and where you want to go, and not being afraid to have the conversation."

How Design & Tech Are Transforming Cities – Nikki Greenberg, Real Estate of the Future, from Smart City Expo World Congress 202516 Dec 202500:40:47

"(B)efore we're even thinking about AI, it's actually thinking about how are we using our technology effectively and is it part of our processes? Does it complicate things or does it simplify things? And the advice that I always give them is like, before you start bringing in new technology and new processes and having to train people and doing their job in a different way and adding complication first, look at what you're doing and…pair back the stuff that doesn't need to be there anymore. And then think about technology."

Nikki Greenberg on Electric Ladies Podcast

Cities are in transformation mode – between affordability and housing challenges, the need to be resilient to climate's impacts, and yet maintain the vibrancy that draws billions of people to cities. How can they do that? What role does technology play – and does AI change everything?

Listen to architect and urban designer, Nikki Greenberg, CEO of Real Estate of the Future and an advisor on urban innovation, in this fascinating conversation Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson had with her at the 2025 Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

You'll hear about:

●        How cities can be hubs of "soft diplomacy" as city leaders across the globe share best practices, tips and strategies to make their cities better, more affordable and more climate-resilient.

●        First things first: The first things she counsels city leaders to do before thinking about technology, including A.I.

●        How climate change has affected city building codes: From the type of energy systems to have to where to locate them, to designing flexibility into building structures.

●        Plus, insightful career advice:

"You can't stop learning and you can't be complacent. And yes, you might have time constraints. Yes, you might have disadvantages. Yes, you may have been in your career and been very good at it for a very long time, but it doesn't mean that you can sit still and stop learning.…The advantage that you have is that you have experience, you have professional networks, you know how to hold down a job….But you have to get behind the new technology and learn how to use it because that's the tools that we're using moving forward." How Corporates Can Lead Sustainability - Trisa Thompson, Former Chief Sustainability Officer, Dell Technologies25 Oct 202200:39:03

"Trust in the corporation today is higher than in your own government. That really gives them this moment and the trust factor that they should not squander because the majority of Americans do believe in climate change and do want something done about. And so, I think there are some real opportunities …. And this is for boards of directors…If it's a basic functioning of the company…the board of directions will be held liable for failure to mitigate climate change damage." Trisa Thompson on Electric Ladies Podcast

A recent study by Edelman found that trust in companies is higher than trust in government, despite the flurry of people leaving their jobs for greener pastures.  Trisa Thompson, former longtime Chief Sustainability Officer of Dell Technologies, says this represents a window of opportunity that companies should seize to make a difference, grow, and recruit and retain the best talent, including women.

Listen to Trisa Thompson explain why in this engaging interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson.

You'll hear:

  • What's creating this window of opportunity for companies to mitigate climate change and grow.
  • Why boards of directors are vulnerable and need to step up, as part of their fiduciary responsibilities.
  • What she would do if she was still a Chief Sustainability Officer today – including who she would partner with.
  • How to persuade executives and others who are not on board with sustainable practices.
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

"You have a job, whatever it is, you could be in marketing, you could be a supply chain engineer. Where do you see low hanging fruit, whether it's in your job description or not, that can make a difference in your company? And how do you go get that done?... , I would say let's all grab the moment with this Inflation Reduction Act and let's go see what change we can make happen by 2030!" Behind The SEC Curtain On Climate Rules - Kristina Wyatt, Fmr SEC Climate Risk Task Force, now at Persefoni04 Oct 202200:57:49

"The climate emergency is urgent and climate risk is financial risk. And the SEC is all about the protection of investors and the financial markets. And if you have this looming financial risk, that's not being adequately addressed. …And, investors were saying, look, the information that we're getting just doesn't cut it. It's not sufficiently clear, consistent, comparable, reliable. We need more and we need the SEC to step in and provide clearer guidance, clearer rules to help ensure that investors are getting the information that they need."

Kristina Wyatt on Electric Ladies Podcast

We see the wrath of climate change vividly today in the damage from Hurricanes Ian and Fiona -- which also reflects the financial risk and impact of climate change. That's why the Securities and Exchange Commission, the SEC, is finalizing its climate risk disclosure rules right now. How did they develop them? Today you'll find out.

This episode of Electric Ladies podcast takes you literally into the SEC's room where those deliberations happened. Listen to Kristina Wyatt who literally led the SEC's Task Force developing these rules, explain how they did it and what happens next in this riveting conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. Kristina's formal title was Senior Counsel for Climate and ESG to the Director of the Division of Corporate Finance, and now she's SVP of Global Regulatory Climate Disclosure and Deputy General Counsel of Persefoni.

You'll hear:

  • How the SEC Task Force literally developed the proposed climate risk disclosure rules – and what happens next.
  • Whose input they sought out to achieve their goals of serving investors and providing clarity.
  • How to make sense of the different ESG-related standards
  • Why this is a great time for a career with purpose
  • Plus, insightful career advice.

And much more!

So, if you need to take courses, learn about how to read financial statements, get very familiar with your company's financials, understand balance sheets, understand income statements, understand cash flow statements and how they work so that you can really speak the financial talk and understand how your sustainability issues integrate with your financial issues."
