This is the first time the agency has published a report about how health equity impacts rates and costs of communicable disease and ill health arising from environmental hazards.

• Comparative results and results over time - example looking at national data
• Comparing with neighbours or other practices

Positives

• Low sample size means only indicative at practice level and difficult to compare one practice to another
• Unfair to compare some practices with others... Comparing apples to oranges.
• Practices in difficult areas, where it is harder to recruit for example and where here are generally lower levels of life satisfaction, shouldn't be compared to more affluent areas with less challenges and practices who report higher levels of general well being.... I've often though there should be a set of control questions about general life satisfaction to help control for these sorts of differences.
  • 👉🏻Social deprivation is complex
  • 👉🏻The patients calling in socially deprived areas are complex and will have be wanting “to see a GP” as if that’s the cure. People in alffluent areas will have probably done a load of research first
  • 👉🏻the shortage in clinical staff is much more markedly felt in socially deprived areas
  • 👉🏻I imagine the CQC are going to look at these survey results and select these practices for a CQC

Headline features
doubling medical school training places to 15,000 by 2031/32, with more places in areas with the greatest shortages 
increasing the number of GP training places by 50 per cent to 6,000 by 2031   
almost doubling the number of adult nurse training places by 2031, with 24,000 more nurse and midwife training places a year by 2031
providing 22 per cent of training for clinical staff through apprenticeship routes by 2031/32
introducing medical degree apprenticeships with pilots running in 2024/25 so that by 2031/32 2,000 medical students will train by this route
training more NHS staff domestically – in 15 years’ time, we would expect around 9-10.5 per cent of the workforce to be recruited from overseas compared to nearly a quarter now 
ensuring that more than 6,300 clinicians start advanced practice pathways each year by 2031/32
increasing training places for nursing associates (NAs) to 10,500 by 2031/32 – by 2036/37, there will be over 64,000 nursing associates working in the NHS, compared to 4,600 today.

Every report, guidance and initiative directed at UK General Practice is advocating for increased use of technology and a digital first approach to accessing NHS care.

A recent report from the patient advocacy organisation HealthWatch, recommended that GP Surgeries should prescribe medicines available over the counter at pharmacies and supermarkets to patients based on socioeconomic need.

For years the NHS has been telling practices to stop doing this due to the cost of providing a whole appointment compared to the low cost (often pennies) of widely available medicines such as paracetamol and antihistamines.

Hi Andy and Gandhi

Thank you for your weekly podcast, it is very informative – I am not sure how you both manage to digest all the information and changes that we face on a weekly basis, and then hold an informative podcast on the issues…

I generally listen to the recording, and so don’t contribute to the live event – there was one issue that I wanted to mention after this weeks’ episode and that was when you discussed ‘up skilling the reception team to care navigators’ – my comment / concern is that if we are being asked to up skill staff it would be good if there was some funding to increase the pay to reflect this up skilling (and not just funded training)… The role of receptionist is key, but the underfunding of practices, which is particularly an issue in deprived areas means many receptionists are employed on the minimum wage or very near it.

The ARRS funding via the PCN DES is highlighting the disparity in T&C’s between the ARRS staff and practice staff T&C’s and this increasingly becoming an issue.

So good

So much sense in the simple plan to save general practice

Firstly, they increased funding to general practice, allowing more GPs to be hired and giving them the resources they needed to provide better care to their patients. They also invested in technology, such as telemedicine and electronic health records, to make it easier for GPs to communicate with each other and provide more coordinated care.


Next, they implemented measures to reduce the administrative burden on GPs, allowing them to spend more time with their patients. This included hiring more administrative staff to handle paperwork and streamlining processes to reduce bureaucracy.


They also implemented measures to support the mental health and wellbeing of GPs, recognising that they were under immense pressure and needed support. This included counselling services and peer support networks.
