another (hence the need for duct tape)! Technology can be incredibly useful, yet the sheer volume of educational technology tools is daunting. In this engaging book, Jake Miller guides teachers through an exploration of technology tools to help them develop more confidence in their selection and use of technology to meet the needs of their students. It isn't about the number of tools you use; it's how you use them that matters!"

🏆 2 Truths & 1 Lie

🤔 Educational Duct Tape Question:  How can I develop engaging instruction?

  • One of the most important questions educators can ask.
  • Engagement is the “Skeleton key” that can unlock academic success
  • Classroom engagement has stumped educators for years and led to pervasive myths about what engagement looks like.
  • Superhero teacher myth - We don’t have to have these captivating personalities. However, passion and excitement for a topic/learning can be conveyed.
  • Remote Learning - A national anxiety about student engagement. “Students are not… logging in, completing assignments, sharing online, turning on cameras, etc.”
  • How can we use this moment of disruption and chaos to try and apply some innovative thinking to recreate schools/classrooms to ignite a passion of learning and truly engage students in relevant learning?
  • TPACK & SAMR - Frameworks for Technology Integration
  • Active learning - Students learn best when they get to interact at all times in the lesson. This leads to interactive content!
  • Actively Learn - archive of text-based resources - articles, subject, grade, lexile
    • Free and Paid options
    • From Sam’s New EdTech Classroom - Actively Learn Tutorial for Teachers (youtu.be/lj154A6QJk8)
    • Think EdPuzzle but for articles
    • Fully Dynamic Text with accessibility baked into the articles
    • Upload your own content - turn an existing webpage, PDF, or video into interactive content.
    • Insert Multiple-choice, open-ended, poll...
    • Rubrics, align to DOK, align to standards
  • Whiteboard.chat vs. Whiteboard.fi
  • Other ways to ensure student engagement from Sam:
    • Personalized instruction - ST Math, Prodigy
    • UDL Tools for differentiation
    • Authentic Assessments of Knowledge ie use the 4 C’s, (think Critically, Create, Communication, Collaboration) create vs consume, digital portfolios
    • Gamification - Is not just about games, it is about tracking progress and building upon something you’ve accomplished in the past. It motivates everybody!
    • Variety - We should be exposing students to lots of different tools and programs. That’s what authentically build skills and foundation technology skills and prepare students to be fluidly navigating digital spaces.
    • “Students need to be technologically ambidextrous”

#EduDuctTape Question: How can I formatively assess my students?

  • Pear Deck - “It doesn’t feel like an assessment.”
  • Nearpod
  • Jamboard
    • students respond with or without name on a jam.
    • Knikole recommends:
      • Putting 1 question per frame
      • Using post-it colors strategically (red = I don’t get it, yellow = I’m not so sure, green = I’m ready to share)
      • Discussing digital citizenship when using Jamboard
      • We discussed the lack of a revision history on Jamboard. However, it has rolled out in the time since the interview was recorded! See Alice Keeler's article about the Revision History in Jamboard here.
  • Padlet - “you can do so many different things!”
    • Students can respond with text, videos, audio, images, drawings, screencasts, links.... just about anything!
    • The big issue is the limitations of their free plan. For a new user, you'll only get 3 active "walls," but you can archive, delete, or clear them.
    • Individual Pricing or School Pricing
  • Mentimeter - lots of different options (polls, quizzes, word clouds, Q&A, etc)
    • The big issue here is that their free plan only allows 2 question slides and 5 quiz slides per presentation.
    • Here is their education Pricing
  • Formative - great for data and tracking of standards-based mastery
    • Their paid plan adds in student growth tracking
  • Classkick

    • Mobile apps to use as a tuner or as an instrument
    • NearPod
      • Initially, Casey used it all on his teacher screen
      • As time went on and Casey got access to more devices, he increased his use of its formative assessment features
      • Nearpod can still be useful if you're not 1:1, Casey has used with students in groups or in stations
      • The use of Nearpod for data collection across multiple classes and 100s of students was valuable for Casey
      • Nearpod VR allows him to present in a more rich way
