A Reflective Episode on Current Events15 Jun 202000:13:27

Welcome back to GotTechED the Podcast.  We’re going to take a break from our regular podcast schedule to address the issues regarding race and police violence in the United States. Over the last couple weeks Guise and I have taken a pause from creating content to do some reflecting on recent events.  We are sickened by the path that America has taken and the devastating loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many many others that, tragically, are too numerous to name.  This podcast supports all people in their fight for systemic change towards equality, justice and a better America.

Segment 1:

Nick introduces.  We hope your silence on the issues has been mistaken for inaction or lack of caring.

  1. We wanted to make sure that our message was clear and correct.
  2. We are a tech podcast, but mostly we are educators.  As educators we feel that we play a critical role in helping to shape the world and the recent racial issues are

Nick and I both have put a pause on our creation of content to make time to reflect on how we can take action in the movement to make systemic change in America.  As a podcast, we must improve and be more intentional to showcase the works of all genders, races, and backgrounds.  Through reflection and research, we have identified that it is a mistake to think that being a good person and treating others fairly is an actionable step to improve the inequalities of America.  We have identified that words and social media presence is not enough.  Since our content hiatus, we have taken some actionable steps and we challenge everyone to take some too.  Here are some actionable steps that are a part of our plan:

  1. We need to educate ourselves on our political leaders so we can vote for people who stand by principals of equality and believe that #blacklivesmatter
  2. We need to write to our government to ask them to be better and learn from reoccurring mistakes.
  3. We need to continue or start conversations with our schools about race, gender, privilege, and equality.
  4. We need to protest and show up with our voice
  5. We need to support black, small businesses owners

Edtech ThrowdownEpisode 165: Edtech Resources for the Summer

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown  This is episode 165 called “Edtech Resources for the Summer”.  In this episode, we’ll talk about the resources that we’ll be exploring while on this year’s summer vacation! This is another episode you don’t want to miss, check it out!

Segment 1:

Narrative:  Summer time talk

Segment 2:

Guise’s Books

AI for Educators: Learning Strategies, Teacher Efficiencies, and a Vision for an Artificial Intelligence Future by Matt Miller
  • Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek
  • In the U.S. Marines during mealtime, Sinek explains, it’s common for the highest ranking officers to fix their plates last. This not only ensures everyone on the team is fed, but sends an important message: Leaders look after their people first. But Sinek’s people-first approach is only one component of a larger narrative that includes segments on creating a safe environment within your organization—he refers to this as the “Circle of Safety”—and the surprising impacts of what he calls “selfless chemicals” like serotonin and oxytocin on leadership style.

Nick’s Books

  • Storytelling With Purpose: Digital Projects to Ignite Student Curiosity by Michael Hernandez:  The book:
  • Shows how to create uncheatable assessments through student-created story projects
  • Helps educators create meaningful learning experiences by integrating edtech tools and storytelling into their curriculum.
  • Shows how storytelling can help students activate higher-level thinking to conduct research, process ideas and information, and share the synthesis of these ideas with an audience.
  • Illustrates how digital storytelling can help develop a mindset of collaboration, mental agility and resilience.
  • Presents student examples, teacher case studies and sample lessons to demonstrate how to integrate student stories into curriculum in authentic ways.
  • Offers flexibility, through sample projects that vary in degree of difficulty, so teachers can choose the best option based on their resources and unique situation.
  • Schoolishness: Alienated Education and the Quest for Authentic, Joyful Learning by Susan D. Blum (Author)
  • In Schoolishness, Susan D. Blum continues her journey as an anthropologist and educator. The author defines "schoolishness" as educational practices that emphasize packaged "learning," unimaginative teaching, uniformity, constant evaluation by others, arbitrary forms, predetermined time, and artificial boundaries, resulting in personal and educational alienation, dependence, and dread.  Drawing on critical, progressive, and feminist pedagogy in conversation with the anthropology of learning, and building on the insights of her two previous books Blum proposes less-schoolish ways of learning in ten dimensions, to lessen the mismatch between learning in school and learning in the wild. She asks, if learning is our human "superpower," why is it so difficult to accomplish in school? In every chapter Blum compares the fake learning of schoolishness with successful examples of authentic learning, including in her own courses, which she scrutinizes critically.

Guise’s Podcasts

  1. Optimalist Podcast with Sara Candela
  2. One of my favorite recent episodes came from the Optimalist Podcast with host Sara Candela. The episode I checked out was with my podcast buddy Bryon Carpenter called "Online Education and Building Tenacious Classrooms." This episode delivered in many ways but I will just mention two in this blog. First, I was introduced to a new podcast with a host who is a great conversationalist. I know Bryon and Sara was able to dig a little deeper and get Bryon to open up a side to him that was very relatable to me. When I listen to podcasts, I am looking for relatability and this episode was very relatable. Second, the segment called "The Joy of Teaching and Witnessing Students' Growth" was pure gold. I laughed a lot and I was able to reflect on my practice to realize that there are many ways to get enjoyment from teaching kids. One of these ways is by witnessing student growth and appreciating the collective efforts that go into this!
  3. Tech Tools For Teachers Podcast by Shanna Martin
  4. Those of you who listen to our podcast (EdtechThrowdown.com) know that I have three boys who are 8, 6, and 4. My oldest loves exploring and studying weather. At the time, I was looking for ways to keep his curiosity churning. I came across Shanna Martin's podcast Tech Tools For Teachers and her episode called "Fun Ways to Teach Kids About Weather." In this episode, Shanna introduces two websites focused on weather called Weather Wiz Kids and SnowCrystals.com. This episode afforded me the resources needed to provide my son with some enrichment to further explore his

  • Our approach we use is called, Reflect, Tinker, Grow: We created a platform, called LINCspring, for personalized professional development.

What is Blended Learning?

  • There are many different ways to define blended learning. The most referenced definition comes from the Christensen Institute:
  • The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns:

  1. at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace;
  2. at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home;
  3. and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience.

What is the PAACC Framework?

  • Personalization: Providing unique learning pathways for individual students
  • Agency: giving learners opportunities to participate in decisions about their learning
  • Authenticity: giving learners the opportunity to create for a real audience both locally and globally
  • Connectivity: giving learners opportunities to experience learning in collaboration with their peers and experts, locally and globally
  • Creativity: giving learners opportunities to make things that matter while building skills for their future

What are some edtech tools that you use to support the Blended Learning classroom?

  • Explain Everything

  • Canva
  • Googlelittrips.org
  • Google Arts & Culture
  • ClassroomQ

How to Combat AI Misuse in Your Classroom20 May 202400:41:28

Edtech Throwdown

Episode 164: How to Combat AI Misuse in Your Classroom

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown  This is episode 164 called “How to Combat AI Misuse in Your Classroom”.  In this episode, we’ll talk about how to plan your classroom with a positive and pro-active approach to AI use! This is another episode you don’t want to miss, check it out!

Segment 1:

Narrative:  Teachers questioning student work.

So let’s take a break while we go ask ChatGPT to write this episode for us, so that when we come back we can talk about how to deal with these issues in a positive and proactive way.

Segment 2:

  1. Avoid The “Reactive” Approach
  2. Don’t find yourself halfway through the year and angry because you can tell that a significant percentage of your students just used a chat bot to write their responses.
  3. Set Clear Expectations (Be Proactive):
  4. Syllabus Statement
  5. Could align with a school policy if that is already established
  6. Introductory days AI discussion
  7. Ask students to share what they think about AI.  Let them discuss, consider, and reflect.
  8. Generate class rules together, almost like norms
  9. Give them examples from real life where AI might be allowed, and then not allowed.
  10. In college, they would likely see similar rules, where using AI to write for you is likely considered academic dishonesty and you would get expelled.
  11. In life, you might use AI to begin the process of writing a best mans speech you need to give.
  12. In a career, you might use it to plan out some talking points for an upcoming meeting or make an email sound more professional.
  13. Assignment/Project Expectations
  14. Clearly state acceptable/unacceptable uses of AI
  15. Have some pre-written templates for different types of assignments and what types of AI-use might be acceptable.  This way you can easily copy and paste them into assignment descriptions as needed.
  16. Promote Positive Communication
  17. Let students know that you aren’t out to “Catch Them”
  18. Expose them to current AI literature
  19. 8 Things Students Should know about AI by Ben Klieger
  20. Best Practices
  21. Show examples of good use of AI
  22. Show examples of how you can tell the usage of AI
  23. Turnitin AI Detection
  24. Chrome Extensions
  25. Draftback
  26. Revision History
  27. Clear expectations and detailed process
  28. You may use AI for ____ purpose.
  29. You must share a google doc before starting your work.
  30. You must have your final draft at the top and copy and paste in any prompts and outputs of prompts that you use at the end of your final draft.

Elevate Learning with Gamification Techniques05 Nov 201900:38:31

  • Common uses of Gamification EdTech Tools
  • Ideas for Implementing Gamification into the Classroom

If you are a new listener to GotTechED the Podcast, we would love to hear from you.  Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today!

Segment 1: What is Gamification?
  • Gamification is an alternative method of learning compared to the traditional idea of learning. Instead of fearing the task of learning new things, gamification uses game elements to encourage and motivate students through the use of a game or  a fun activity.
  • Examples of gamification elements:
    • Badges
    • Experience points
    • Level ups
    • Leaderboards

Segment 2: What are some commonly used gamification EdTech tools?
  • Flippity
  • Play Brighter – students answer questions successfully earning currency that can be used to customize their avatars in the game.
  • Minecraft Education Edition – students interact, collaborate on projects, and share portfolios with their peers in a game world related to the content you’re teaching. While you can build your own Minecraft world, there are pre-built worlds and lessons already available on the app.
  • Crossword Puzzle Maker
  • Jigsaw Planet
  • Wheel of Names
  • Voki
  • G-SUITE
    • Red Reveal- drawings
    • Scoreboard- sheets
    • Hyperdoc- docs
    • Lock Code- Forms

Segment 3: What are some gamification ideas you can use in your classroom?
  1. Using Pop Culture themes – each week you give a team or individual challenge and the points go towards leveling up or allows them to buy power-ups.
  2. Badge system for students – Badg.us, BadgrMozilla’s Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI)
    1. Flippity to keep track of badges

  3. Discussion Scoreboard
  4. Murder Mystery Scenario with role playing and learning content to solve the mystery
    1. FlipGrid

  5. Backwards grading.  Start from 0 and assign points as they achieve.  Feels like rewards rather than punishments. Alternative to ClassCraft – design your own XP system.  More XP can buy them things in your class.
