| The Blue Standard for preventing ocean pollution with Cassia Patel @ Oceanic Global | 24 Jan 2022 | 00:21:24 | |
Being able to incentivize companies and businesses like Royal Sands and Corona to become more sustainable takes lots of small steps - from single-use plastic reduction to the installation of filtered water stations with refillable bottles. Creating a way to raise awareness and recognition for these efforts is one way that we can use our system for good. The Blue Standard by Oceanic Global was designed to help consult businesses through these changes and then award them for their work. We're joined by Cassia Patel, who has been a Program Director at Oceanic Global, for nearly 4 years to hear more. -- If the content we make on the Eco-Warriors Podcast makes an impact on you, become a sponsor! | Conscious consumerism with Sarah Sproviero @ Lightfoot Market | 04 Dec 2017 | 00:32:17
If you're a conscious consumer, you'll relate to Sarah Sproviero's plight of the difficulties in purchasing products from companies that are kind to the environment, the people who make them, and you. After being frustrated with the lack of transparency and the immense amount of research that went into finding the best companies, Sarah started the Lightfoot Market. The Lightfoot Market is dedicated to being a marketplace for conscious consumers and thoughtful brands to connect. They run bi-annual pop-up markets here in New York City and have a directory of carefully vetted brands they trust. The next Lightfoot Market Holiday Pop-Up will be on Dec. 9-10th at the Metropolitan Suite in Chelsea, NY. We will be there selling the Trashy Beauty repurposed coffee body scrub. Come and say hi. We'll have a free treat for anyone who supports the podcast. Sarah used to be an environmental teacher at the Audubon Society and credits playing outside and being close to nature as the reason she cares deeply about the environment today. There's a pretty hilarious story that Sarah shares from her teaching days, so you have to listen to the end when she reveals her party trick. -- Resources mentioned in this episode:

Franziska Elmer got to live on a remote atoll research center during her Ph.D and saw one of the most untouched eco-systems on the planet. The only other people who get to visit Palmyra are volunteers and millionaires who donate money to the Nature Conservancy. Fran is also a huge believer in protecting the environment and underwent the Plastic-Free challenge while living on a desert island called Bonaire. | Reducing NYC's trash problem by composting with Meredith Danberg-Ficarelli @ Common Ground Compost | 23 Nov 2017 | 00:33:09
New York City spends $1.3 billion a year on waste management and it's one of NYC's biggest exports, going to other states as far as Ohio. With a small, local movement to compost, NYC already has one of the country's largest compost programs. How long do you think it takes for a head of lettuce to break down in a landfill? And, listen to the very end, because Meredith turns the tables on me! Meredith is extremely knowledgeable and inspiring to speak with. Her straightforward way of talking about the trash problem is great for anyone wanting to understand this issue better (and take action!). | Minimalist zero waste living on the road with Cheryl Davies @ Yintuition | 06 Nov 2017 | 00:31:48
Cheryl Davies was living what she thought was a great life - working in the textile industry, living in New York City, car, boyfriend - but something was off. Today, Cheryl is a licensed acupuncturist, lives a minimal life from her bicycle, and partakes in dumpster diving with her partner Rob Greenfield (the guy who wore all his trash in a specially designed trash suit for 30 days). There is something magical in the way Cheryl has discovered a new life and career after the one she thought she wanted where she was working in the fashion industry. | Re-thinking Food Waste with Qiting Fang | 18 Jan 2022 | 00:15:43
In her Design Class, Qiting Fang was challenged to come up for a solution to food waste. The problem she thought to pursue was figuring out a useful solution to all of the tea that is drank in her homeland China. The solution: tea desiccants. Desiccants are those little packets, usually filled with silicone gel beads, that are put into products to help absorb moisture and prevent and damage to the product cause by moisture. You've probably not thought a lot about desiccants but they are ubiquitous in the food and drug industry and makes up a multi-million dollar industry. Although Ting's solution was not brought into fruition, the idea of utilizing what we think of as waste to close the loop on everything we use in manufacturing and food production is an incredibly important one. -- If the content we make on the Eco-Warriors Podcast makes an impact on you, become a sponsor! | Creating sustainable and fair trade coffee with Anu Menon @ Driftaway Coffee | 23 Nov 2020 | 00:14:53
Small Act of Green Rebellion: Buy sustainable gifts. More than 63% of American adults drink coffee and about 500 billion cups are consumed each year. Since coffee grows near the equator, that is a pretty big impact as a whole industry. Anu Menon started Driftaway Coffee with her husband, Suyog, as a way of building a company that they could both be passionate working on. A couple years in, they realized that in order to really love what they were building, they had to think of the sustainability of their company and products. Now, Driftaway Coffee is a subscription coffee company that uses fully compostable packaging and pricing transparency as part of their business practices. -- Season 3 of Trash Talking with Eco-Warriors is sponsored by Plaine Products. Small Act of Green Rebellion: Find your green community. Jordana Vasquez is an architect turned sustainability and energy consultant. Following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Jordana decided to use her skills to help protect vulnerable communities with sustainable building practices. Around the same time, Jordana met her co-founder, Chante Harris, at an event where the two were the only BIPOC women in attendance. What sprang from their chance meeting was an organization, the Women of Color Collective in Sustainability (WOCCS), that helps to connect women of color in the sustainability space. | Making dog poop sustainable using paper-based alternatives with Tracy Rosensteel @ Pooch Paper | 09 Nov 2020 | 00:15:57
Small Act of Green Rebellion: Use paper (instead of plastic) to pick up your dog's poop. After 8 years of picking up her dog's poop with plastic bags, Tracy Rosensteel decided to do something about finding a greener alternative to the "biodegradable" bags on the market (which are still made of plastic). What she ended up creating is Pooch Paper, a recycled, non-bleach alternative to plastic poop bags. Pooch Paper has since been picked up by Shark Tank and can be found in big box stores like Target and Chewy. -- Season 3 of Trash Talking with Eco-Warriors is sponsored by Plaine Products. | Creating viral green news with Lucy Biggers @ NowThis | 02 Nov 2020 | 00:17:45
Small Act of Green Rebellion: Make green news go viral. Lucy Biggers started out her career as a video producer at NowThis covering stories like Standing Rock and micro plastics in your face wash. What started as an interest in technology and following the stories of passionate players in the sustainability field has turned into a full-on environmental niche for Lucy. Her Standing Rock videos have collected over 9 million views and President Obama mentioned that media attention is one of the reasons why he blocked the pipeline. It seems that viral videos and sharing stories online can actually make a difference. | Building a carbon-neutral shipping company in Costa Rica with Danielle Doggett @ SAILCARGO | 26 Oct 2020 | 00:17:18
Small Act of Green Rebellion: Buy carbon neutral or local products. Danielle Doggett took her love of sailing and nature to build a company that will sail products from Costa Rica up the Pacific in a carbon neutral vessel. The shipping cargo industry pollutes more than the 6th most polluted country in the world and 10,000 containers are lost at sea every year (check out this article about the rubber ducks lost at sea). This means a hefty impact on our planet for up to 90% of the goods that we own. Kathy Hunnan was working at Google X, Alphabet's moonshot division, as an entry-level marketer when she got involved with a solution for heating and cooling individual homes - using geothermal energy. From there, Kathy spun off the company as her own startup and has been focused on making green heating and cooling systems affordable for all. -- Season 3 of Trash Talking with Eco-Warriors is sponsored by Plaine Products. | Saving what stores throw in the trash with Anna Sacks @thetrashwalker | 11 Jan 2022 | 00:19:11
Following a stint on an integrated farm, Anna Sacks changed her career from investment banking to working on helping to solve our economy's big waste problems - products that are like new are thrown out by business to make room for more products. Anna posts on social as @thetrashwalker and shares her finds. Some of what we talk about may be incredibly shocking and not for the faint of heart. Anna has found items from pads to live animals that have been "discarded" by various big box businesses. The point that Anna makes is that we should stop over producing and find ways to direct "waste" to different places they can be used. -- If the content we make on the Eco-Warriors Podcast makes an impact on you, become a sponsor! | Reusable bottles for the live music industry with Yvanna Lacémon @ Oaï Water Bottles [LIVE from France] | 03 Jun 2019 | 00:33:42
Yvanna Lacémon was traveling the world when she realized that she wanted to start her own project to help the environment. We lived together at a surf camp in Ecuador and after seeing my own reusable water bottle, Yvanna decided this was an easy way to get people in her native France to change their habits. With that, Yvanna founded Oaï (pronounced why), a company that produces and sells insulated stainless steel bottles in France and neighboring countries in Europe. Having worked in the music industry for years, Yvanna focused on aligning with artists like Patrice and selling her bottles to companies like LiveNation, who can help influence and change an industry laden in plastic usage. This episode was recorded live in Paris, France just outside Garé Montparnasse the weekend of the Good Planet Foundation Festival of Change. Check out Oaï on Instagram. -- If the content we make here at Trash Talking inspires you, become a sponsor! Go to anchor.fm/trashtalking and click on the link to Support This Podcast.
