Ep 116 Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson27 Sep 202301:30:19

Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. With a passion for material culture, Dr. Williams-Forson focuses her research on African Americans' lives in the United States from the late 19th century to the present. She is a multidisciplinary academic, serving as an affiliate faculty member of the Theatre, Dance, and Performing Studies, the Departments of Anthropology, African American Studies, The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. Her extensive research in this area employs cultural studies, intersectionality, and popular culture to inform our understanding of historical legacies of race and gender representation.

In Nicolette's second PhD interview, Dr. Psyche discusses her doctoral research on the association between Black people and chicken, which turned into just one chapter of her broader research. Their conversation explores the foodways of Black people, Southern food, and the legacy of slavery, which resulted in African slaves' agricultural knowledge. The discussion also touches on the complexity of factors contributing to Black people's health, including trauma and violence, and how food choices are not solely responsible. They highlight the importance of understanding that choosing what to eat is a middle/upper-class conversation, and food shaming should be avoided. Instead, we need to consider factors such as taste, access, availability, affordability, and knowledge of how to prepare food. Dr. Psyche emphasizes that eating is a necessity, and we need to help people where they are.

Dr. Xavier is a passionate and dedicated teacher who has designed and delivered courses in the areas of Contemporary Indigenous Issues, Indigenous Food Security and Food Systems, Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Methodologies.

Dr. Xavier is a true scholar whose research interests include the study of Indigenous food security and sovereignty, Indigenous land connections and re-matriation, Indigenous food ways, and Indigenous ways of knowing. Dr. Xavier's appearance on Nicolette’s first PhD podcast was a tour-de-force. She shared her insights on a range of issues, including the root causes of disease, food sovereignty versus food security, and the impact of colonization on access to nutritious foods that are part of one's heritage. She also touched on the ways in which racism acts as a barrier to food and disease, and how trauma can cause disease. Dr. Xavier underscored the importance of listening to our bodies and the foods it craves. She passionately believes that educating the next seven generations of people about food and history is vital, and that even social media can play a role in influencing the kinds of foods people are exposed to. Dr. Xavier’s upbringing was centered around whole foods, as her mom grew everything or traded for other foods and she reflects on how this all changed when they moved to Canada.

Ep. 114 Meet the BadAss Vegan, John Lewis12 Jul 202301:22:36

As a well renowned fitness expert, John Lewis has spent over 2 decades in the health and fitness industry and played Division I College basketball. John is highly passionate about not only his own health and fitness, but that of others as well. Today, John has taken his passion for health and is now directing his first feature length documentary focused on food and social justice. John has teamed up with the maker of the award winning “What The Health” to create their joint venture “They’re Trying To Kill US”. The film follows co-director John Lewis from his beginnings as an adopted child from a crack-addicted birth mother, growing up as an overweight kid in the violence of Ferguson, Missouri, to becoming a prominent health and wellness advocate promoting compassion.

Audiences journey with John as he crosses the country seeking answers to why Americans of Colour suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease than their European American counterparts, while examining the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption. Through interviews with cultural influencers, doctors, researchers, politicians, attorneys, professional athletes, activists and experts in the field of food justice, John begins to unravel a story of collusion that has kept millions of US Americans sick, while the industries responsible make billions of dollars.

Today, Nicolette engages in a conversation with John Lewis, delving into his remarkable journey from playing basketball to finding a new path towards wellness and purpose. The journey commenced in 2004 when the passing of a close friend compelled him to seek solutions for his own health issues, including IBS. By adopting a plant-based diet, he experienced a remarkable transformation within a mere two weeks, shedding inflammation and gaining newfound energy. However, the pivotal moment arrived when his mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, sparking his research into the link between lifestyle choices and diseases such as hypertension and heart disease.

Through personal experiences and learning from the mistakes of others, he uncovered the ancient roots of veganism in Jainism, realizing that indigenous cultures had long embraced plant-based lifestyles. Along his path, he encountered pre-packaged vegan foods, which prompted him to transition towards whole foods, expanding his palate and understanding of diverse culinary traditions. Embracing his role as a catalyst for change, he founded the Badass Vegan movement, advocating for the planet, social justice, and personal well-being.

With a focus on providing answers and promoting inclusivity, John tackles various topics, ranging from the disproportionate impact of food-related issues on Black communities to the manipulative tactics employed by insurance and fast-food companies. Through his film, "They're Trying to Kill Us," and his book, "Badass Vegan," his aim is to empower individuals to fuel their bodies, challenge the system, and live authentically. Join us on this transformative journey as we explore the history of veganism and discover how embracing a plant-based lifestyle can foster healing for ourselves and the world we inhabit. Remember, your "why" will serve as your guiding force on this path of transformation. Get ready to effect positive change and unleash your inner badass.

Ryan "Ghenigho" Rich is the founder of Root Healing. He is a traditional Missoko Bwiti Iboga provider who was trained and empowered to lead retreats and also offer preinitiations to men and women. His work with Iboga includes Traditional Bwiti Iboga Ceremonies, Iboga Assisted Detox, Pre-initiations, Iboga Preparation, and Iboga Integration Counseling. Ryan is a lead providers at most of the Root Healing ceremonies and our Detox program. Ryan also studies/practices Tantra, Engaged Buddhism, and of course Bwiti. In addition to his Bwiti/Iboga work, Ryan is a meditation teacher, counselor, and mentor. Ryan loves to help people liberate themselves from their conditioning, and their fear, and actualize a more full, engaged, life.

On today’s podcast Nicolette and Ryan discuss Ryan’s Iboga retreats in Portugal and the process of integration and ceremony that they perform. He talks us through the effects that iboga has on people and that the key to healing is the truth. They also discuss plant medicine and the profound effects they can have on your body and mind and talk about the true path of colonization. The Iboga plant can help people with addictions, ancestral trauma, autoimmune and chronic disease by breaking the old patterns by balancing hormones and the brain. Ryan teaches us the difference between Iboga and Ibogaine, and how he has learnt the practice of Bwiti in Gabon, which is so different from the Western world that takes everything and tries to change nature. Ryan expands on the research that needs to be done and how they are seeing Iboga’s effects on MS, Parkinson’s, herpes, and HIV.

Ep 124 Thriving Beyond Loss: Maxime Sigouin's Fit Vegan Revolution 28 Feb 202401:31:45

In this compelling episode, our host, Nicolette, engages in a profound conversation with Maxime Sigouin, the visionary founder of Fit Vegan. Maxime's personal journey is marked by the loss of his grandfather at the age of 63 and his ex-fiancée at 39, both succumbing to bone and breast cancer, respectively. Having spent over 4.5 years as a caregiver, Maxime witnessed firsthand the toll that losing health takes on a loved one – the diminished ability to relish life fully, and the stark reality of the true cost of compromised well-being.

Motivated by these experiences, Maxime embarked on a mission to empower individuals to safeguard their bodies from preventable and reversible chronic illnesses. He champions the transformative potential of adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet coupled with an active lifestyle. Maxime has set ambitious goals – aiming to assist 10,000 people in achieving leanness, thriving, and disease-proofing their bodies on plants by 2033, and an astounding 1,000,000 by 2050.

In this insightful episode, Nicolette and Maxime reconvene for a second time to explore the intricate connections between mindset, nutrition, and holistic well-being. Together, they unravel inspiring stories, sustainable weight-loss strategies, and offer indispensable psychological tools to conquer self-sabotage while cultivating enduring habits.

Ever wondered why your weight-loss journey should prioritize sustainability? Maxime dismantles this concept, underscoring the significance of preventing weight from creeping back on. But that's not all – Maxime unveils the secret sauce to maintaining weight loss: reverse dieting. He guides you on approaching food with logic, making choices aligned with the wisdom of evolution. It's time to seize control of your health and embrace a life of fulfillment with Fit Vegan. Join us on this transformative journey towards lasting well-being, and learn how to savor every moment to the fullest.

Ep 104 Healing Through Stories and (re)Connection with Sgaanuwee Studios30 Aug 202201:38:05

Chantal Adams grew up with the teachings and Haida laws of respect and consent. Along her journey, she realized how important deep meaningful connections and conversations were to her: along with belonging and connection to community, land, and water. Wanting to continue building connections, in a healing way with people, Chantal pursued a degree in Child and Youth Care with an Indigenous Specialization. She became involved in re-search with Kinship Rising, that re-centers Indigenous ways of being through arts and land-based methodologies. It was through this journey that she found her passion for research and storytelling. It is Chantal’s keen affection for people, nature, healing, reclamation, and belonging that drives her research and creative journey.

Gabriel Swift has always been fascinated by the process of creating art. Intrigued by stories about the power of the natural world and the human condition, he witnesses how visual storytelling provides an outlet to share stories across cultures and generations that can make lasting impacts on our lives and the decisions we make. He has worked alongside an award-winning team as a cinematographer on the feature length film “Coextinction.” Everyone has a voice, a perspective, and a story, they just need to be heard. Gabriel’s focus is on creating films that heal and foster connection to ourselves and the natural world.

Nicolette partnered with Gabriel and Chantal on create two documentaries, 1) Grounded in My Roots and 2) Food of Our Ancestors which tell the stories of discovering food as medicine and Nicolette’s journey running and biking across Canada to uncover the barriers that BIPOC peoples face in accessing clean real foods. Today’s episode shares how Indigenous, Black, People of Colour (BIPOC) are disproportionally affected by chronic disease and how human and planetary healing can happen through re-connecting with food, the earth, ourselves, and our spirits. Chantal shares stories from her Haida Gwaii lineage and Gabriel shares how he was nurtured through spending time with his family in India. They discuss how their generation is choosing to live differently from the Baby Boomers that over consumed and how overconsumption led to the mental and physical health breakdowns and climate change that we see today. The first step: look to our Elders and to Nature. We need to connect to lineages and roots and bring them to the forefront if we are to heal ourselves.

Kim Slater hails from Guelph, Ontario, but has resided in the Sea to Sky region for the past decade. In that time, she has worn many hats, working primarily in the non-profit and public sectors in executive director, program manager, and grant writing roles. She also volunteers for the Red Cross and Whistler Community Foundation alongside other community champions in the service of sustainability, community resilience and social change. Her belief in the transformative power of dialogue has evolved over the years through extensive community development and facilitation work in both rural and urban settings.

Ep 100 The Weight Loss Champion Chuck Carroll18 May 202201:56:49

Widely known as “The Weight Loss Champion,” at just 5 feet 6 inches tall, Chuck Carroll weighed 420 lbs and had a 66-inch waist before radically changing his life. Before that, he tried and failed countless times to lose weight. Any success he achieved was short-lived as the weight he lost came pouring back on and then some. Out of desperation, he decided to have weight loss surgery in 2009. Chuck was just 27 years old at the time and didn’t believe he would live to see 30. He thought at least he would go to his grave saying he tried everything. But then the unexpected happened. He decided after abusing his body for 27 years that it was time to look forward and never look back. Although a critical component, the procedure proved only to be the first step in his journey. In fact, he only attributes 10 percent of his long-term weight loss success to it. The rest he credits to a plant-based diet and changing his lifestyle! By adopting a plant-based diet, he is no longer afraid of regaining the weight as he had so many times before.

He became a reporter where he covered sports and news for CBS and later NBC News Radio. He was also previously featured in PCRM’s Teaming Up 4 Health campaign where he had the opportunity to speak on Capitol Hill and share his remarkable journey. Now he is delighted to be bringing his passion and talents to the Physicians Committee as host of The Exam Room™ podcast and to show others that the impossible is possible — you can get healthy!

Chuck holds nothing back while sharing his weight loss story, and chronic depression, which started before he was 8 years old and continued until he was in his 30’s with an addiction to Taco Bell. Chuck and Nicolette discuss the difference between Fat Shaming and weight loss for heath, how the health system has health advise but not always information on how to achieve a healthy life. He shares all the diets he tried and failed including the cookie diet, which led him to the conclusion that he had a food addiction. Chuck tells us about his weight loss surgery and about the advice he didn’t take from his doctor eventually led him to a Whole Food Plant-Based diet. This podcast is the one to listen too if you are struggling with health or have a friend who is.

Ep 99 From Crohn’s Disease to A Vegan Force for Good; MeeT Jason Anthony27 Apr 202201:54:45

Jason Anthony is co-owner of MeeT vegan restaurants in Vancouver with his wife Linda and friend Ivo. Their mission is to help transition the mainstream to eating more plant-based foods in a friendly, accepting, and engaging venue. They have spent the last 20 years in Vancouver, owning and operating a total of 8 restaurants and organic grocery stores throughout the city. Jason is also founded Vegan Supply and their newest project Friend & Faux. Jason’s vision for the world: a thriving vegan lifestyle and interacting differently with the world, to be part of the solution.

At age 25, Jason was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. The GI Doctors told him he would have it for life and that his food choices didn’t matter. But this didn’t resonate with him as he knew remission was possible. After reading Dr. Gottschall’s book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, he changed his diet and got results. This started Jason on a healing path that took many twists and turns which led him to being one of Canada’s most ambitious and ground-breaking Vegan entrepreneurs.

On today’s podcast, Jason shares just how powerful the human body is in repairing and rebuilding itself. He teaches you how to reframe your relationship with food and how eating is truly a spiritual practice. Jason also raises the important differences between a plant-based and vegan lifestyle and how to support and grow small local vegan communities for the betterment of all.

Ep 98 BE Alink Brings Mobility and Health to Those with Mobility Challenges31 Mar 202200:00:01

BE (Barbara) is the inventor of Alinker bikes, a vehicle for social change and creator of the “Reverse-Design” way of approaching the world. BE is a paradigm-shifter, edge-walker and developed the "Reverse-Design" life's practice.

BE has gained appreciation of the power of community as a result of life-changing work in Afghanistan, Kenya, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Kosovo, and Indonesia. The common theme behind these projects is connecting people with each other by creating meaningful social contexts through which people can actively engage - based on who we are as humans. And based on who we chose to be.

BE also founded The Alinker Family Farm, which is in existence since mid 2019. Together, BE’s companies promote healthy living by building a community for people who are isolated and dismissed due to a disability. Alinker Bikes make activity and adventure possible and the Alinker Family Farm engages people in conversations about the food we grow and eat while building a community by us, for us.

In this episode, BE and Nicolette come together to share how they are partnering to help the Alinker Community reverse chronic disease using the power of food as medicine. On today’s podcast you can learn how food and mobility are linked and how you can participate in a community wide study where you’ll learn how to heal yourself with metabolic nutrition. Other engaging topics discussed include disability and chronic disease in a broken health care system, how the western capitalistic world has lost its community to the economic world of transactions and how the system has dictated our lives, including race, gender, and disability, with the pandemic only magnifying this. BE provides hope and shares how Alinker Bikes is helping people liberate themselves from isolation and improves depression, chronic illness, loneliness and access to food.

Ep 123 Indigenous Realities: A Heartfelt Conversation with Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal07 Feb 2024

Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal is a passionate Indigenous community leader, educator, and advocate based in British Columbia, Canada. She is a member of the Sk̲wxwú7mesh Úxwumixw and the Líl̓wat7ul Nations, and her career is focused on advancing the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples in her community and beyond. Alison is particularly interested in language revitalization, land stewardship, and cultural preservation and has worked extensively in these areas throughout her career.

Mixalhítsa7's leadership and advocacy work have earned her several awards, including the Order of British Columbia and the Indspire Award, which recognizes outstanding Indigenous achievement in Canada. She has also served on several boards and committees related to Indigenous issues, including the First Peoples' Cultural Council and the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. Through her tireless work and dedication to Indigenous rights and cultural preservation, Mixalhítsa7 has become a respected and influential voice in her community and beyond.

The podcast with Alison Pascal was a heart-wrenching conversation about the historical and current struggles of Indigenous communities in Canada. Pascal spoke about how the Canadian government's intervention in the lives of Indigenous people has caused them to suffer from alcohol consumption, drug use, and poor food management. It was not an accident, but a deliberate choice that resulted in intergenerational trauma affecting their physical and mental health. Pascal shared a story about how immigrant families were starving and freezing, but Indigenous nature helped them survive by teaching them how to farm. However, the Indigenous people were forced to side with the British to fight the French and Spanish, resulting in the loss of their land, which is now a commodity that can be sold. Today, Indigenous people are conditioned to stay inside and are denied access to gathering and foraging, leading to a loss of culture and spiritual connection to the land.

The residential school system, which separated Indigenous children from their parents and land, led to a truth and reconciliation diet where children worked on school farms but were not allowed to eat the food, resulting in malnutrition and chronic diseases. Pascal questioned if it is possible to reprogram our bodies to not have chronic diseases and suggested the use of ancient medicines to maintain good health. The podcast also highlighted the issue of mental health stigma in Indigenous communities, which is exacerbated by the social aspects that white people see in Indigenous people, such as domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, and gambling. Pascal spoke about the importance of a sustainable program to get kids onto the land to foster their interest in culture and the need for parents to be involved. Indigenous people are part of the land, and the land is part of them, but the spiritual loss has led to an autonomic economy that is split into unfarmable land, affecting their drinking water.

Overall, the podcast highlighted the interconnectedness of intellectual, physical, mental, and emotional health, and how the wellbeing of Indigenous communities in Canada is essential for all living beings and the land. Pascal's emotional testimony left a lasting impact on listeners, calling for immediate action to address the long-standing issues affecting Indigenous people in Canada.
