Here, he taught and researched for forty-two years in the Departments of Microbiology and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. He is an Honorary Professor at the Universities of Cardiff and Buckingham, UK, the University of Ruhuna, Sri, Lanka, and the Slavic University of North Macedonia; he is also a Visiting Professor of King Saud University, Riyadh, and one of the few biologists to be made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He has published widely on the history of science, particularly on the germ theory, the history of antibiotics (notably penicillin) and alternative accounts of the history of natural selection and evolution. 

Nalin Chandra Wickramasinghe, MBE, BSc (Ceylon), MA, PhD, ScD (Cantab), Hon DSc (Sri Lanka, Ruhuna), Hon DLitt (Tokyo, Soka), FRAS, FRSA was born in 1939 in Sri Lanka. He commenced work in Cambridge on his PhD degree under the supervision of the late Sir Fred Hoyle, and published his first scientific paper in 1961 He was awarded a PhD degree in Mathematics in 1963 and was elected a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge in the same year. In the following year he was appointed a Staff Member of the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge where he remained until 1973. He was formerly a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge and Staff Member of the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge; Formerly Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Astronomy, Cardiff University, UK; Director of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology, University of Buckingham, UK; Honorary Professor, University of Buckingham; Honorary Professor University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka; Honorary Professor, Sir John Kotelawala Defence University of Sri Lanka; Adjunct Professor, National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Sri Lanka. He has also held visiting Professorial appointment in the US, Canada and Japan and Sri Lanka over the past four decades. A meticulous study of the social, economic, and religious significance of coffin reuse and development during the Ramesside and early Third Intermediate periods, illustrated with over 900 images

Funerary datasets are the chief source of social history in Egyptology, and the numerous tombs, coffins, Books of the Dead, and mummies of the Twentieth and Twenty-first Dynasties have not been fully utilized as social documents, mostly because the data of this time period is scattered and difficult to synthesize. This culmination of fifteen years of coffin study analyzes coffins and other funerary equipment of elites from the Nineteenth to the Twenty-second Dynasties to provide essential windows into social strategies and adaptations employed during the Bronze Age collapse and subsequent Iron Age reconsolidation.

Many Twentieth to Twenty-second Dynasty coffins show evidence of reuse from other, older coffins, as well as obvious marks where gilding or inlay have been removed. Innovative vignettes painted onto coffin surfaces reflect new religious strategies and coping mechanisms within this time of crisis, while advances in mummification techniques reveal an Egyptian anxiety about long-term burial without coffins as a new style of stuffed and painted mummy was developed for the wealthy. It was in the context of necropolis insecurity, economic crisis, and group burial in reused and unpainted chambers that a complex, polychrome coffin style emerged.

The first part of this book focuses on the theory and evidence of coffin reuse, contextualized within the social collapse that characterized the Twentieth and Twenty-first Dynasties. The second part presents photo essays of annotated visual data for over sixty Egyptian coffins from the so-called Royal Caches, most of them from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Illustrated throughout with high-quality images, the line drawings and color and black-and-white photographs are ideal for careful study, especially evidenced in the digital edition, where pages can be enlarged for close examination.

Kara Cooney is a professor of Egyptology and chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA. Specializing in social history, gender studies, and economies in the ancient world, she received her PhD in Egyptology from Johns Hopkins University. According to Natawidjaja, the data that supports their findings shows that the Gunung Padang pyramid is a bit like a three-layer cake, and each layer was built thousands of years apart. He says the most recent layer, known as Unit-1, was constructed about 3,000 years to 4,000 years ago. The next oldest, Unit-2, was built around 7,500 years to 8,000 years ago. The oldest part of the structure, Unit-3, could be as ancient as 16,000 years to 27,000 years. This supports the research done by B.M Kim, which suggested the pyramid dates back to between 300 and 2,000 B.C.E.Interestingly, Natawidjaja says, “Unit-2 may potentially be a stepped pyramid."In his 2023 study of the site, he explains that Gunung Padang is more than just an old stone terrace; it's a complex structure buried underground featuring large chambers and hollow spaces. The carbon dating suggests that the initial construction could have taken place during the last Ice Age, in the Paleolithic era, and was later modified in the Holocene or Neolithic era.Natawidjaja’s team came to these conclusions by comparing the ages of samples from the volcanic base layer (which is millions of years old) and the three layers of construction.“In contrast [to the volcano], soil samples taken from between fragmented rocks have been dated to only a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of years old, which presents an enigma in natural geological processes," says Natawidjaja. "Geological principles dictate that soils cannot migrate from the near-surface layers to deeper depths over time. Hence, the juxtaposition of relatively young soils between ancient rock layers poses a significant geological challenge.”The conclusion: Only a technologically advanced culture during the Ice Age could have positioned those stones. Recognizing the impact of the findings, Natawidjaja once told The Sydney Morning Herald, “It’s crazy, but it’s data.

Maya Exploration Center Director Dr. Ed Barnhart has almost three decades of experience as an archaeologist, an explorer and an instructor. He is a Fellow of the Explorers Club, has published many papers, and appeared in over a dozen documentaries about ancient civilizations. His involvement in Maya studies began in 1990 as an archaeological intern in the ruins of Copan, Honduras. In January of 1996 he was invited to return to Copan and help the University of Pennsylvania excavate the early acropolis and the tomb of the city's lineage founder.From 1992-1995 he had been studying art, iconography and epigraphy (hieroglyphic translation) under the late Dr. Linda Schele at the University of Texas at Austin. During that same time he worked across the State of Texas as a contract archaeologist.In 1994 he began working as a surveyor and a UT field school instructor in the jungles of Northwestern Belize.

After finding numerous small villages, Dr. Barnhart discovered the ancient city of Ma'ax Na (Monkey House), a major center of the Classic Maya Period. He mapped over 600 structures at Ma'ax Na between 1995 and 1997 before moving his research focus to Chiapas, Mexico. Also while in Belize, Dr. Barnhart worked with the Belize Post Classic Project mapping the island of Caye Coco and excavating a series of burials on an island in Laguna de On.Dr. Barnhart received his Masters degree in May of 1996 and began teaching Anthropology classes at Southwest Texas State University the following September. He taught Archaeology and Anthropology classes at SWTS until 1998 when he was invited by the Mexican government to direct the Palenque Mapping Project.The Palenque Mapping Project was a three-year effort to survey and map the unknown sections of Palenque's ruins. Over 1100 new structures were documented, bringing the site total to almost 1500. The resultant map has been celebrated as one of the most detailed and accurate ever made of a Maya ruin.

He received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with his dissertation entitled The Palenque Mapping Project: Settlement Patterns and Urbanism in An Ancient Maya City (PDF).In 2003 Dr. Barnhart founded Maya Exploration Center and since that time has organized and led over 200 study abroad programs for students around the globe. He has appeared on History Channel, Discovery, Japanese Public Television and multiple independent documentaries. In 2012 he completed a 24-lecture video series for The Great Courses entitled "Lost Worlds of South America." The mysterious ‘Sculptor People’Surprisingly little is known about the people who created these burial mounds, who are alternatively called the Cultura del Alto Magdalena (Upper Magdalena Culture) or the Pueblo Escultor (Sculptor People). “The big mystery is why these sculptors disappeared [in the ninth century],” explains archaeologist Hernán Ordoñez, who grew up in San Agustín. “Did something happen to the climate? Were there volcanic eruptions? Was it contact—or conflict—with other pre-Hispanic cultures? So far, it’s not clear.”What we do know is that the megalithic sculptures were artistic manifestations “made with the intention of almost ideological dominance,” says Ordoñez. They were meant to transcend life—perhaps acting as protectors of the living—and include iconographic features making them resemble reptiles, felines, monkeys, and other creatures native to the area. Most of the figures were carved in sitting positions and included embedded messages offering clues about ancient shamanic practices.

The first scientific excavations took place here in the 1910s, though 17th-century tomb raiders had already plundered many sites for golden funerary artifacts. The archaeological parks date to 1931; they were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Though large-scale scientific excavations mostly took place between the 1960s and 1990s, newer studies, conducted by the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History between 2016 to 2022 using remote sensor technologies, are expected to shed new light on the culture over the coming years.

Roughly 600 statues lie near the town of San Agustín on the eastern slopes of the Colombian Massif. The Magdalena River, Colombia’s chief waterway, has its headwaters here. The river flows east through a sharp-hewn canyon, dividing the three associated archaeological parks where the statues seem to watch over elaborate tombs with portal-like dolmens and carved stone sarcophagi.The https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/744/San Agustín Archaeological Park, on the western edge of its namesake town, is the largest of the trio, home to a small museum and a winding forest trail that doubles as an open-air exhibit of statues found elsewhere. The park also contains exposed burial mounds poking above manicured lawns and a sprawling monument carved into the stone bed of a trickling stream.

Davíd Dellenback was born in Oregon; he has lived in San Agustín since the 1970’s, an investigator and intepreter of the ancient Pueblo Escultor of the Macizo Colombiano. He has put together a comprehensive registry of their lithic statuary, with drawings of the stonework accompanied by descriptions, measurements, bibliography, notes on the history and movements of the monoliths, etc. He has also traveled widely in America in search of sites of ancient stone sculpture and stone-carving. As well, he has been involved in the movement to repatriate stone-sculptures stolen from the territory by huaqueros and academics. He is a member of the Veeduría de la Repatriación and of the San Agustín Academy of History.

Martha Gil was born in Bogotá, Colombia; she has lived in San Agustín for more than two decades. She is an “ex-lawyer”, a writer, educator and archaeological tourism guide. She is the translator and distributor of the works published by the couple, and is a partner in the investigations of the ancient Pueblo Escultor. In her Macizo Colombiano territory, she is a leader in efforts to repatriate cultural patrimony, and of the related community education and appropriation. David Lonebear Sanipass is the last remaining Sagen, or Spiritual Leader, of the Mi’kmaq Nation. He is a spiritual scientist, engineer, storyteller, flute and basket maker. The Mi’kmaq (pronounced mi-gah-mah) are an indigenous people presently located in Maine and Canada, though originally they populated areas from Boston, Massachusetts northward into Canada. 

David’s birth was prophesied by elders over 300 years before his birth. He was trained extensively from birth by over 600 elders from around the world for the first 26 years of his life on the side of Lonebear mountain. This included what are referred to as the “star teachings” as well as advanced mathematics, science, chemistry, biology, physics and engineering. Our universe holds lots of mysteries, but perhaps the most fascinating for most is the planet Mars, long thought to be the only planet in out solar system that may be the most similar to our own planet, possibly having the ability to sustain life.In Blue Planet Red, director Brian Cory Dobbs interviews a variety of scientists, researchers, and even people on the street about their theories and thoughts on Mars. The film makes some compelling arguments, but it also presents some theories that are just bonkers (Dobbs even warns us, the viewers, before those theories are explained, in a very Rod Serling kind of way). The film, as strange and far out as some of the theories may be, did manage to keep my interest for the nearly two-hour running time, and never succumbs to techno-babble or talking head syndrome, thanks to the many inserts of stock footage and quick cutting. My main complaint with the film, though, is the absence of any titles that introduce us to the speakers and what their credentials are at the time they are speaking on camera. Brian Dobbs was rather vocal about going against convention on the use of titles when he was a guest on the Home Theater United podcast, but in my opinion, they add a bit more credibility while viewing the film.

Clifford MahootyZuni Pueblo Indian Elder

Mahooty was a Zuni Pueblo Indian elder, and member of the tribal orders of the Kachina Priest hood, Galaxy medicine society, Sun Clan, and wisdom keeper of the Zuni history and spiritual practices. Mahooty is a retired Civil/Environmental Engineer (BSCE-NMSU-1969). He worked for Shell Oil Company and various US government programs for housing under USHUD, DOI-BIA planning design and construction of Indian reservation infrastructures and school projects. Mahooty served in the US Public Health Service, as a commissioned officer, to provide services to American Indian communities. He served in Oklahoma and Arizona in water, wastewater, and solid waste systems. Mahooty served as the National Environmental Justice Coordinator, in the DOI-BIA for the 561 federally recognized Indian tribes. He coordinated with various agencies of federal, state and tribal governments to enforce laws and regulations to protect sacred sites, and lands against desecrations, pollution of natural resources, illegal taking of artifacts, burials, and sacred objects. He represented the Indian tribe’s environmental assessments and impact statements. Mahooty was instrumental in the contracting of federally funded programs, where Indian Nations can administer projects including: planning, design, construction of facilities and infrastructure, schools, hospitals, law and order, housing. Grail Quests often begin with what seems like normal travel adventures, but then suddenly turn into divine synchronistic events that makes one feel as though they're being guided by the Universe. I was to find out, two years later, that many local people knew about this cave. Teenagers even partied in it, as we could see from their graffiti, so what was the big secret? The cave's location was obviously not a secret, but apparently no one understood the significance of that specific cross. Since 2017, she has focused on documentary filmmaking, with her most recent work, The Brazilian Templar Mystery, completed in 2019 and sold to Gaia TV in 2020. Kathleen is passionate about researching global mythology, mystical and spiritual belief systems, and is inspired by ancient indigenous art and archeological discoveries.
