Shark Tank to a $37M Business31 Aug 202400:06:41

In this episode of EYL, we sit down with Alexiou Gibson, the visionary entrepreneur behind a skyrocketing $37 million business. Alexiou shares his transformative journey from an ambitious business plan to partnering with renowned sharks on Shark Tank. Despite the initial aim of securing $500,000 for just 5% equity, Alexiou soon realized that the sharks brought more to the table than just financial support—they had the relationship capital needed for explosive growth.

*Why did he devalue his company?*

Alexiou explains how the strategic partnerships and growth strategies offered by the sharks outweighed the initial monetary offer. With access to the networks of influential moguls like Mark Cuban and Kevin Hart, Alexiou's brand was catapulted to national visibility, gaining opportunities that would have been otherwise unattainable. One notable example was Mark Cuban's immediate response to getting a clearance from Disney, facilitating a crucial post on The Shade Room during Black History Month.

*Challenges and Triumphs:*

Post Shark Tank, Alexiou faced operational challenges, including the overwhelming "Oprah effect" — receiving half a million dollars in orders within the first hour of the episode airing. However, smart decisions like delaying massive exposure from QVC (as advised by Mark Cuban) allowed the business to scale sustainably.

Today, Alexiou Gibson is weeks away from opening the largest CMOS manufacturing facility in the U.S., a sprawling 20,000 sq. ft. plant that will not only bolster domestic growth but also expand the business into international markets including Canada, the UK, Colombia, and the Bahamas.

*Key Milestones:*

- Seven months in, the company made a million dollars.

- By the time of appearing on Shark Tank, sales hit $3.5 million.

- Post Shark Tank, the business saw rapid growth, making $37 million in just three years.

- Launched a successful Seamoss gummy that sold out within two months, adding $3 million in revenue.

- Upcoming launch of Seamoss skincare line and an Amazon store, which are predicted to elevate sales beyond the $20 million mark in 2023.

*Future Outlook:*

As Alexiou expands into new product lines and platforms, his vision to not just grow his business but also to maintain high standards and sustainability remains steadfast. A nomination for Oprah's Favorite Things this holiday season signifies further validation and excitement for what's to come.

*Don’t miss out:*

This episode is a masterclass for budding entrepreneurs, offering invaluable insights into the strategic decision-making that separates success from failure. By focusing on long-term growth and leveraging key relationships, Alexiou Gibson has built a brand that's not only thriving but is set to dominate multiple markets in the coming years.

Watch the full episode to learn how you can apply these principles to your own entrepreneurial journey.

Invest Fest Highlights: Networking, Panels, Education, and Community Growth30 Aug 202400:25:29

Welcome to another enlightening clip of Market Mondays! In this special edition, we dive deep into the highlights and key takeaways from Investfest, an event that truly underscores the power and value of networking and in-person connections.

In this clip, hosts Rashad Bilal, Troy Millings, and Ian Dunlap have a riveting discussion on several pivotal aspects of Invest Fest. Rashad starts by emphasizing the unparalleled importance of networking. He shares an incredible encounter between Steve Harvey and 50 Cent at Investfest, illustrating the immense influence and opportunities that arise from such connections.

We also explore the value of panels and workshops that covered various trending topics, including artificial intelligence and homebuyer education. These sessions received outstanding feedback, signaling the deep interest and critical need for knowledge in these areas.

The speakers highlight building relationships as the cornerstone of success, reiterating that the most significant takeaway from any event should be leaving with three valuable connections. This networking ethos was evidently showcased in the dynamic environment of Investfest, where vendors and attendees alike gathered to exchange ideas and forge new professional bonds.

A notable observation was the proactive engagement—or lack thereof—by vendors in the marketplace. The hosts stress the importance of being assertive and seizing opportunities to network and make meaningful connections.

We also acknowledge the vibrant presence of young attendees, including community kids, college graduates, and teenagers. Their enthusiasm and engagement at Investfest serve as a testament to the growing interest of the younger generation in financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Alongside, Ian Dunlap provides insights from his session, highlighting discussions about Nvidia and a compelling interview with 50 Cent, shedding light on 50 Cent's impactful business dealings and his broader influence on people's lives.

Our gratitude goes out to the entrepreneurs and influencers who made it to Investfest and supported the event. Their participation underscores the collective effort toward financial education and empowerment.

The clip carries a lighthearted tone at times, with humorous exchanges about fashion and attire among the hosts, adding a refreshing touch to the profound discussions.

Reflecting on their own journey with Earn Your Leisure, Rashad and Troy delve into their roles as financial advisors and educators and share stories of community and growth. Whether it’s about the young man who volunteered or the African vendor selling waist beads, each story highlights the communal and supportive atmosphere at Investfest.

Attention is also given to their upcoming book, "You Deserve To Be Rich," set to release in early 2025. The book aims to contribute substantial value to financial literature from their culture's perspective.

A significant part of the conversation touches on the importance of dressing well and curating one’s image in professional settings, using examples of interactions with successful individuals like Don Peebles. The hosts emphasize treating the event as a documented piece of history and the importance of defending the value of Investfest against any negativity or misinformation.

In summary, this episode offers a reflective and insightful look at Investfest's pivotal moments and teachings, underlining the value of in-person networking and the importance of maintaining a proactive and positive engagement in the world of finance and entrepreneurship.

The Man in Control of Transforming Detroit23 May 202400:07:23

Welcome to another clip of Market Mondays! In this special edition, we sit down with the influential CEO of Bedrock, Kofi Bonner, for an insightful conversation about his remarkable journey in the realm of real estate development and urban revitalization. Having deployed billions of dollars in capital and led efforts to rejuvenate cities, Kofi shares his experiences and the transformative strategies that have positioned Detroit and Cleveland as burgeoning world-class cities of the 21st century.

Our discussion kicks off with Rashad Bilal asking Kofi about his path to becoming the CEO of Bedrock. Kofi recalls his extensive career, from his early days in California as a real estate developer to his tenure in Cleveland as the Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the Cleveland Browns. After a rich career with various stints, including taking companies public and facing the taxing nature of real estate development, Kofi retired in 2020. However, the unexpected onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a timely call from a headhunter led him to reconsider retirement and eventually embrace the challenge of revitalizing Detroit.

Kofi’s narrative sheds light on his initial skepticism about the opportunity in Detroit and how a personal visit to the city, coupled with conversations with Dan Gilbert, Bedrock’s chairman, ultimately convinced him to take the helm. He vividly describes the rejuvenated energy of Detroit and how the vision of bringing back the city’s prominence resonated with him.

Troy Millings, another host, also chimes in, acknowledging the revitalization efforts in downtown Detroit, home to major companies like Ally and Rocket Mortgage. He inquires about Kofi’s strategic vision for the city’s development over the next five to ten years. Kofi elaborates on the critical importance of rebuilding the downtown core to boost tax revenues, which are essential for sustaining public services throughout the city. Renovating classic buildings and enhancing public spaces between them are key to attracting residents, businesses, and tourists to the heart of the city.

Kofi goes on to highlight various initiatives that Bedrock has spearheaded to make downtown Detroit more vibrant and appealing, from establishing a roller rink and hosting winter festivals to supporting major national and international events. Upcoming attractions like the Detroit Grand Prix, the Movement electronic music festival, and the Afro Nation festival are set to showcase the city's revitalized spirit to the world, inviting global audiences to rediscover Detroit.

Join us in this episode to hear Kofi Bonner’s firsthand account of leading urban transformation and his vision for Detroit’s future. Whether you are a real estate aficionado, an urban planning enthusiast, or simply someone who loves a good comeback story, this episode is sure to inspire and inform. EYL #76 Respect the Game21 Apr 202000:58:08

The toy and gaming industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that almost everyone has partaken in at some point in life. There are millions of games and toys on the market. How widespread the field is, makes it remarkable that only three black-owned toy companies with patterns on their products have ever made it to the shelves of major retail outlets, known in the industry as Big-Box. One of the three owners of the companies is Chantel Calloway. Chantel is the owner and creator of Rhyme Antics, which is a Hip Hop board game created to promote literacy and improve English skills. Chantel struck a deal with Target earlier this year to have Rhyme Antics distributed in 400 locations in North America, as well as online. She has been featured in Black Enterprise and The Breakfast Club. In episode 76, Chantel broke down her business steps to get to where she is now. She discussed the process of invention, trademarks, copyrights and patterns. She also discussed ways to raise money for an idea via equity crowdfunding. The Future of Affordable Housing in NYC with Alicia Keys22 May 202400:04:22

In this enlightening clip of EYL, our host Rashad Bilal sits down with the multi-talented artist and advocate Alicia Keys to discuss a pressing issue that touches the lives of many New Yorkers: affordable housing. As a native New Yorker herself, Alicia Keys shares her personal experiences growing up in affordable housing designed specifically for artists. She candidly discusses how these programs provided her with the vital access and opportunities that shaped her illustrious career.

Rashad and Alicia delve into the current state of affordable housing in New York City, highlighting the dramatic rise in rental costs and the unfortunate phase-out of several beneficial housing programs. With the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan soaring to almost $4,000, they explore the stark realities facing young professionals and creatives who are being priced out of the city.

Alicia reflects on the invaluable role that these artist-specific housing programs played in her life, not just as a place to live but as a crucial support system that kept her rooted in a vibrant cultural environment. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining such programs to ensure that the city’s diverse cultural landscape continues to thrive. Both hosts argue that pricing artists and creatives out of the city ultimately harms the entire ecosystem, taking away from New York the very soul and creativity that define it.

The conversation goes beyond just housing to talk about the broader implications of access to creative spaces. Alicia shares her current efforts in creating fellowship programs for young people interested in set design, costume design, and other artistic fields. These programs aim to bridge the gap and offer invaluable learning opportunities under industry greats, ensuring that the next generation of artists has both the skills and the inspiration to contribute back to the city's cultural economy.

Join us in this compelling discussion that puts a spotlight on affordable housing, creative access, and the continuing efforts to keep New York City a welcoming hub for all artists and dreamers.

Jewelry is a billion-dollar industry that has been around for centuries. There are a variety of sectors and components in the jewelry business, but most people only think about it from a consumers perspective. We were fortunate enough to speak with Dion Smith the CEO of AJC Jewelry, which is the only black-owned jewelry manufacturing company in New York’s prestigious diamond district. Hip-Hop culture has championed jewelry for years and even created the phrase “bling bling,” that’s recognized in the dictionary. However, the celebration of jewelry has been as purchasers not as profiting businesses. Dion is the execption to that. In episode 67, Dion gave us an inside look into the extremely secretive world of the jewelry business. He explained exactly what jewelry manufacturing is, went over the value of gold and discussed if it should be used as an investment and he covered the do’s and don’ts of jewelry collecting, investing and purchasing. EYL #61 Straight Outta Cashville04 Feb 202001:15:54

This week, our Hometown Heroes edition comes courtesy of the legendary city of Nashville, Tennessee. If you’re from Tennessee you have most likely heard of Slim and Husky’s. The new age pizza chain is the talk of the town in the culinary industry. With three locations in Tennessee, one in Atlanta and one more Atlanta location on the way, their reach is growing at a fast pace. The company is not your average pizza store. It was created by three childhood friends (Emanuel Reed, Derrick Moore, and Clinton Gray) who have grown into serial entrepreneurs. The pizzeria combines hip hop, style, art and community givebacks to make the pizza-buying experience different from their competition. Their pizza business is booming but the story goes deeper than that. The trio started their first business with a few thousand dollars in 2010, which was a green eco-friendly moving company. They sold that company a few years later for over a million dollars. After the sale, they used the proceeds to fund their next business which was Slim and Husky’s. In episode 61, they told their story in detail, they explained the process of selling a company, and broke down how they have created a scaleable business that is still community based. #Entrepreneur #Restauranteur Guest IG: @slimandhuskys EYL Website: www.earnyourleisure.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/earnyourleisure/support

EYL #54 The Blueprint17 Dec 201901:01:00

Our latest edition of Home Town Heroes comes courtesy of the turbulent city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the age of 31 Brandon Rule is a business prodigy. He is a commercial real estate developer with an extremely impressive resume. He has developed $50 million in affordable housing projects in Milwaukee through his company Rule Enterprises and has an additional $180 million in projects currently in his development pipeline. A few weeks ago Brandon went viral on social media after news broke that the city of Madison, WI recommended that he be awarded a contract to develop a 30,000-square-foot grocery store, 150-unit apartment building and 345-space parking garage on a city-owned lot. There aren’t too many black commercial real estate developers, and they’re definitely aren’t a lot his age. One of the reasons why there are so few black developers is that there isn’t a lot of exposure given to successful individuals in the industry. Most people think about real estate from an investor’s perspective very few aspire to be big-time commercial developers. In episode 54 of @earnyourleisure Brandon broke down the ins and outs of commercial real estate development, he explained how affordable housing credits work, he talked about financing and he gave an in-depth look into his journey into becoming an icon in the industry. One of the most requested industries that we haven't covered yet is the male haircare business. Barbershops are a staple in every community especially in black communities worldwide. Wade Menendez aka Wade the Barber is a world-renown master barber and stylist, he became a rockstar in the male hair care industry by mastering a technic called cranial prosthesis aka ”the man unit” or “the man weave”. He has multiple streams of income from his barber business which include teaching classes to other barbers on how to install the units, he also sells products and has several brand partnerships. EYL #50 No Limit feat. Max Maxwell26 Nov 201901:04:28

Wholesaling is a fascinating part of real estate that not many people are very knowledgeable in. You can make huge profits wholesaling real estate and you don't need any money to start, you don’t need a real estate license, and you don't need years of experience. What you do need is a strong work ethic, knowledge, and a game plan. For months our Earners have been asking us to cover wholesaling and they have overwhelmingly asked for one guest to talk about it. The undisputed wholesaling champ Max Maxwell. It took a while but we got it done. Max is as big as it gets when it comes to teaching about wholesaling. He has built a community of over 400,000 people between Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Outside of social media, he runs a business empire that will gross over $7,000,000 this year. What makes his story remarkable is where he started. Three years ago his bank account was overdrawn by $438. Today he employs 18 people and just closed on 8,000 square feet of office space. He is a serial entrepreneur and operates several businesses, but wholesaling is what got him off the ground and has remained a major focus in his business plan. In episode 50 he broke down everything you need to know to get started wholesaling real estate. He explained the ins and outs of the game, he went into detail about how to master a market and he provided industry insider tips. If you’re interested in making money in real estate without having to start with much capital this is not an episode you can afford to miss. A few months ago Mickey Factz’s freestyle breaking down credit with Funk Flex went viral in the financial literacy world. It was the talk of Instagram and everyone requested that we have him on EYL. The verse was incredible but his career is way more extensive than just a freestyle. He’s a veteran in the music game with over a decade of experience. He was on the 2009 XXL freshman of the year cover, he has been signed to major labels, he's worked with the biggest names in the industry including Drake and Kendrick Lamar, he had a commercial deal a Honda, an endorsement deal with Puma, and his music has been featured on EA Sports video games. He made the switch from being on a major label to being an independent artist years ago and has been navigating the world of independence ever since. In episode 49 he blessed us with 100 bars of fire for our first ever EYL freestyle. The freestyle is centered around being a business owner, it’s a lyrical lesson on entrepreneurship. In addition to the freestyle, he gave us free game in our interview. He broke down the ins and outs of the music business from an artist perspective, he explained how record deals are structured, he detailed the path for an independent artist to take to have a viable career and explained business pitfalls that many artists fall victim to.
