Disney commits to $1.9 Billion for Disneyland forward

On January 23rd, Anaheim announced that Disney has committed to spending a minimum of $1.9 billion and up to $2.5 billion on the Disneyland Forward project should Anaheim city council approve the project. Money would be spent on "theme park lands, attractions, hotels, shopping and dining west of Disneyland Drive and on the Toy Story parking lot."

From the Orange County Register:

“The DisneylandForward proposal calls for Disney to pay $40 million for portions of Magic Way, Clementine Street, Gene Autry Way and Hotel Way to clear the way for the proposed theme park expansion.

The plan also calls for Disney to build a 17,000-space eastside parking structure with direct connections from the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway that would be larger than the combined Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures."

The DisneylandForward proposal is scheduled for Anaheim Planning Commission hearings in March with a vote by the Anaheim City Council in May.

Pricing, Maintenance Fees, and Incentives for the Cabins

The newest Disney Vacation Club resort, the Cabins at Fort Wilderness has opened for sales to existing members, and with that, we have more information on pricing, maintenance fees and incentives.

First off, the starting price for the cabins is $225 per point, which is the same current price as Disney's Riviera Resort and Aulani.

Initial incentives are not particularly impressive, with a 100 point contract receiving a mere $2 discount, and 150 point contract with a $10 discount.

The biggest news is that the maintenance fees for 2024 have been released, and the initial rate is a whopping $12.16. This is the second highest priced maintenance fees of DVC resorts.

This week, Universal Orland released an official announcement about the new theme park, Epic Universe. There were no real surprises with the announcement except that the central area will be known as Celestial Park and will have two restaurants and three rides including a dueling roller coaster. The other lands are Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic, How to Train your Dragon - Isle of Berk, and Dark Universe featuring Universal's Classic Monsters. No real details on the rides or attractions in the various lands were released. Opening is still just listed as 2025, but it’s still worth noting as competition to your time at Disney.

Moonlight Magic Registration Rule Change

Ahead of the first Moonlight Magic registration for 2024, Disney Vacation Club has changed the verbiage in the “Know Before You Register” section on the Moonlight Magic of the DVC website. The website now states, "When staying using their Membership with Vacation Points, Reservation Points or cash, Members who booked a qualifying Resort reservation by the cutoff date will have access to early or general event registration and can register themselves and up to the number of individuals on their Resort reservation(s)."

Qualifying resort reservations are standard DVC reservations booked with Vacation Points online or over the phone with DVC, reservations booked with DVC for the Disney Collection using Reservation Points, or cash reservations booked over the phone with a DVC representative for a DVC villa.

The new policy means that reservations made at all Walt Disney World (WDW) resorts via the WDW website, by calling a WDW representative, through a travel agent or any other means NOT using an eligible DVC membership do not qualify for early registration. Previously, a standard reservation booked with cash by the deadline for any of the official WDW resorts qualified for early registration, but it absolutely does not anymore.

More Details on the Fort Wilderness Cabins

Several new bits of information came out of Disney Vacation Club documentation filings for the new Cabins at Fort Wilderness.

Based on the documentation, each cabin will have a total of 7,661 points for the year, which is an average of 21 points per night. This is similar to many of the studios throughout the DVC system.  Point charts have not been released yet.

Full floor plan also revealed the dimensions of the cabin is 43’ x 12’ or 516 square feet, which puts the size slightly above studios but much smaller than most 1-bedrooms.

Dog policies for the cabins have also become available. A maximum of two dogs, with fees of $30 per day for Members and $50 per day for others such as cash guests.

On December 19th, Disney announced that it was finally going to rehab the old “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” show in the Animation Courtyard. This show has been closed since the start of the COVID pandemic, and cast members have said that the area had a strong mildew problem preventing it from reopening.

The new show will be titled “The Little Mermaid - A Musical Adventure” and is expected to reopen in Fall of 2024.

Though limited details have been shared, a drawing of a new show scene covering “kiss the girls” was provided. It is likely the show will be a mix of the old and the new, but we should find out in the next few months.

2025 Points charts released

On November 30th, Disney Vacation Club released the 2025 points charts. This year, there were no big changes to the charts, with just the usual adjustments due to the dates of holidays like Thanksgiving and Easter. The charts have remained the same for the third straight year.

In addition, there was another increase in the transient tax at the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, from $2.78 per point in 2024 to $2.87 per point in 2025, an increase of 3%.

DVC Condominium Association meeting

Disney Vacation Club's annual condominium association meeting happened on December 7th, and while there is usually not a lot of news from it, there were a few tidbits came out.

An announcement was made that the Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness resort would be “on sale soon,” with a few new images of the cabins being shared. A website, DisneyCabins.com, was provided, but the site doesn’t yet work.

In the Q&A section, it was asked whether the new Polynesian DVC tower will be part of the same condo association and the answer was given as “our plans right now are for the new tower to be part of the existing Polynesian resort."

EPCOT World Celebration and new nighttime show debuts

On December 6th, EPCOT opened the World Celebration neighborhood, including Dreamers Point to guests. The area has a lot of trees and seating, as well as embedded lighting that matches along with Spaceship Earth.

The new Luminous show also debuted, and overall guest feedback was positive. In particular, the show does appear the same from all around World Showcase, which addresses a big complaint about the previous show.

2024 Proposed Maintenace Fees released

On November 6th, Disney Vacation Club released the dues adjustments for 2024. A few highlights are as follows:

The lowest percentage increases were at Boardwalk with a 1.64% increase, followed by Boulder Ridge/Copper Creek at 1.97% and 2.19% respectively. Old Key West had the highest percentage increase at 6.25%.

The resorts outside of Walt Disney World saw generally larger increases, with the new Villas at Disneyland Hotel increasing 5.19%, and Aulani and Vero Beach seeing the steepest increases.

The lowest dues in the DVC system remain the Grand Floridian followed by Bay Lake Tower at $7.57 and $7.59 respectively. However, note that buying a resort solely for low maintenance fees isn’t necessarily a good strategy. Eight years ago, Old Key West was 4th lowest on Walt Disney World property, but after eight straight years of 5+% increases, the resort is now the highest at Walt Disney World at $9.89 per point.

The two resorts with the highest dues by far remain Hilton Head and Vero Beach, at $11.31 and $13.86 (non-subsidized). The low buy-in for these resorts is offset by much more expensive annual dues.

The historical information for the various resorts can be found at DVChelp.com under the FAQ “maintenance fees/dues” linked below.

Standard Disney Collection rules apply for non-DVC Disneyland stays

Disney Vacation Club announced a minor change to the Disney Collection. For most stays using points to stay at non-DVC Disney resorts, known by DVC as the “Disney Collection”, there is normally a $95 transfer fee, and a Rule that states that members cannot make a reservation AND complete the stay within the last 4 months of their Use Year. (Members can complete the stay within the last 4 months, but need to book before that.)

Previously, these two requirements were waived for the three Disneyland Resort hotels. However, the fee and restriction have been put in place at Disneyland resort hotels, likely due to the opening of the Villas at the Disneyland Hotel.

Holiday DVC event planned for Disneyland

A new holiday event is planned for Disney Vacation Club members at the Disneyland Resort. On November 29 and December 5, 2023, qualifying members can visit the Sleeping Beauty Pavilion on the second floor of the Disneyland Hotel for a unique gathering. Disney characters will be present for photos, and members can collect a special treat for attending.

Hours are 2:00 to 4:00pm Pacific time on both dates. Advance registration is not required. However the line may close early if capacity limits have been reached.

New DVC “Welcome Center” to open in Disneyland

Disneyland Resort announced the Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar in Disney California Adventure will become a Disney Vacation Club Welcome Home Center.

More information will be announced at a later date. Blue Sky Cellar first opened in the park’s Pacific Wharf area (now San Fransokyo Square) in 2008 as a replacement for Seasons of the Vine. On and off for the next several years, Blue Sky Cellar would feature exhibits about upcoming lands and attractions. Blue Sky Cellar has not been used since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.

Announcements from D23 New Horizons Panels

The following attractions were confirmed or announced at the D23 panel on Saturday, August 10th. Josh D’Amaro was very specific to say none of these items are “blue sky” but are all in “active development”.  However, this statement still does not necessarily mean they will all happen as announced.

There were no announcements directly related to Disney Vacation Club, though a few new concept images of the Island Tower at Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows were shared at the DVC booth.

 EPCOT

  • Test Track Version 3 reopening sometime in 2025. No further images were shared and Disney continues to describe the revamped ride as “inspired by Horizons”.
  • Spaceship Earth Lounge opening sometime in 2025. This is an existing VIP lounge for the sponsor of the ride, but will be open with views of the lagoon for fireworks.

Animal Kingdom

  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether will replace the "It's Tough to be a Bug" at the Tree of Life. Opening is “next winter” so likely this is December 2025 timeframe.
  • Tropical Americas will be replacing Dinoland. Work begins fall 2025 and expected opening is in 2027.
  • Dinosaur will be rethemed to an Indiana Jones attraction. The new attraction will be different in theming from Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland in California.
  • Encanto-themed dark ride focused on the Casita Madrigal on the day that Antonio receives his gift. Concept art makes it look like Omnimover attraction.
  • Central plaza will be called "Puebla Esperanza" or city of hope. Third ride is Carousel theme to Disney horses from different properties.
  • Quick Service restaurant will be one of the largest in Disney World - replacing Restaurantasaurus. Theme is said to be Columbian inspired.

Hollywood Studios

  • Monsters Inc. themed land.  Work begins in 2025. No target date for opening. Guests will be able to tour the Laugh Factory via the first-ever suspended coaster in a Disney Park. No other attractions or experiences were announced. Location of this is currently unsure but people are theorizing either the Launch Bay/Animation building area or Grand Avenue area.
  • New story coming to Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run with The Mandalorian and Grogu. This will coincide with the new movie in 2026.

Magic Kingdom

  • New nighttime parade coming summer of 2025 - “Disney Starlight”. Will incorporate music from Wishes.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean themed tavern confirmed for 2025.
  • Two new Cars-themed attractions coming to Frontierland area. One will be an off-road rally type race over mountains, past geysers and through mud-holes. Second ride will be for “the whole family”. Construction to begin in 2025.
  • Villains-themed land announced. Two attractions, dining and shopping. No other details except for one image of concept art. No date for starting or opening.

Disneyland Park

  • Show in Main Street Opera House with first ever animatronic of Walt Disney. To be played in rotation with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. No date given
  • Tiana's Bayou Adventure will OPEN NOVEMBER 17, 2024

DCA

  • AVATAR land will be themed to second and third movie. First images show a boat ride maybe similar to Shanghai pirates attraction. No date given.
  • COCO boat ride attraction/dark ride. Work set to begin in 2026.
  • Two Avengers campus rides:
  • "Avengers: Infinity Defense" is the ride with King Thanos and entering the multiverse that had been previously discussed.
  • “Stark Flight Lab” looks like a Kukla Arm ride (think Forbidden Journey) and Robert Downey Junior will play Tony Stark for the attraction.

Disney Cruise Line

  • Stage show on Disney Destiny will be Hercules. The one on Disney Treasure will be Tales of Moana.
  • Announced four new ships added to the fleet between 2027-2031 for a total of 13 ships.

DVC reporting Grand Floridian now “Sold Out”

As of October 30, Disney Vacation Club informed its staff that the Villas at the Grand Floridian Resort Big Pine Key was officially sold out.  The sold out status means that there will be no discounts for purchase of points at this resort. While it may be possible to still purchase direct points, the sales focus will return to Disney's Riviera Resort for Walt Disney World.

New incentives released on October 31st are not as good as the previous incentives. A 150 point contract would only see an $8 discount off direct pricing to $208 per point, while current members would pay $200 per point. Villas at Disneyland Hotel discounts are even less.

DVC applies for Timeshare license for Fort Wilderness cabins

Disney Vacation Club has filed an application with the state of Florida for a new license for timeshare sales on October 12th.  The license application currently shows as being “under review” and the application calls for 18,876 timeshare weeks, which breaks down to 363 units. There is no additional information related to a timeline to offer sales.

More recent projects have seen Disney applying for a license 8-9 months before sales began. For instance, a license was issued to sell The Villas at Disneyland Hotel back in August 2022, while sales begin in May 2023. Grand Floridian Resort was opened in July 2021, but points weren’t on sale until March 2022.

Based on these numbers, we are likely to see the cabins go on sale sometime next summer.

DVC adds Halloween events on both coasts

After making its debut in 2022, Disney Vacation Club's Halloween member event is back for 2023. From 2:00pm to 4:00pm on select afternoons, eligible members can visit the Atlantic Dance Hall on Disney's BoardWalk for photos with Disney characters sporting their holiday garb and complimentary holiday treats. Scheduled event dates are:

  • Monday, September 25 & Tuesday, September 26
  • Monday, October 9 & Tuesday, October 10
  • Monday, October 30 & Tuesday, October 31

The event is open only to members who are registered guests at a Disney owned-and-operated resort at Walt Disney World or Disney's Vero Beach Resort. Attendees must also qualify for Membership Extras. An owner and up to 4 additional guests may attend. DVC digital ID card and photo ID must be presented upon arrival.

In addition, DVC has announced a similar event for members at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. The events will be held on October 17 and 24, both Tuesdays, from 3 to 5 pm.  Beginning at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel's Community Hall, members can make "treat stops" at several Disney Vacation Club Welcome Home kiosks scattered throughout property. Along the way, participants can take part in craft projects and pose for pictures with Disney characters.

Like the East coast event, members must have a reservation at a Disney owned-and-operated resort in California or a ticket to the evening's Oogie Boogie Bash, and each member may bring up to 4 additional guests for a total party size of 5.

Deluxe evening hours coming to Animal Kingdom November 8th

For the first time, on Wednesday, November 8th, deluxe evening hours will be offered at Disney's Animal Kingdom instead of either Magic Kingdom or Disney's Hollywood Studios. Extended evening hours are scheduled from 7 PM to 9 PM.  This is likely due to both DHS and MK having hard ticket events starting that week. (Hollywood Studios is offering the Deluxe evening hours in October.) It is expected that evening hours at Epcot and Animal Kingdom may extend through most of November and December.

Parking trams returning to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios in September

Under the category of “it’s about time,” Walt Disney World has announced that the parking trams in the EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios parking lots will resume starting sometime in September. While an exact date has not been provided, this is the first update we’ve had for these parks on operational dates.

It was originally announced in December 2021 that all parking trams would return “by the end of 2022,” but that did not happen. While Magic Kingdom resumed parking tram service by Christmas 2021 and Disney's Animal Kingdom started back in May 2022, there was no service at the other two parks until now.

Disney uses Right of First Refusal for first time in over six months

For the first time since January, Disney Vacation Club has invoked the right of first refusal on resale contracts. As many DVC owners familiar with the resale market know, when a buyer places a bid on a contract, Disney has the right to pay the seller the same amount and buy back the contract. This is called Right of First Refusal or ROFR for short. Throughout the last 10 years, Disney typically buys back around 10-20% of contracts on average, but in 2023 Disney had only bought back a few Copper Creek contracts in January, and none since.  Resale prices have dropped over the last seven months in part due to the lack of ROFR contracts.

The three contracts recently bought back were fairly low price bids, with two being at Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas and one at The Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. If Disney starts buying back more contracts, this could result in a near-term increase in resale pricing.

Vanellope Meet and Greet closes at EPCOT

August 19th was the last day to meet Vanellope from Wreck-It-Ralph at the Imagination! Pavilion in EPCOT. Disney has announced that Mickey and Minnie will be greeting here in their platinum 100th anniversary outfits, but there is also the expectation of a Figment Meet and Greet coming soon as well. Joy from Inside Out is still meeting in this space, but it is possible that will close in the near future as well.

DVC owners can be evicted from premises under new Florida timeshare law

New Florida legislation went into effect on July 1, 2024, that allows management to remove timeshare owners and guests for a wide range of inappropriate conduct including:

  • Illegally possesses or deals in controlled substances
  • Intoxicated, profane, lewd or brawling
  • Indulges in language or conduct which disturbs the peace and comfort of other guests
  • Conduct which injures the reputation, dignity or standing of the establishment
  • Fails to make payment of rent at the agreed-upon time
  • Fails to check out by the agreed-upon time

Disney has had issues with being able to remove Disney Vacation Club Members engaging in inappropriate behavior in the past, and this new legislation should allow them to appropriately deal with concerning behaviors.

DVC Direct Sales in June strongest in years

Starting with out west, another 162,000 plus points were sold for the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, which includes new member sales that began on May 30th.  Total sales are now at 309,500 points, which is about 9.5% of the resort.  Since only 575,000 were initially declared that means 54% of available points have already been sold.  As such, we are likely to see another declaration occur in the next 1-2 months should sales continue at the current pace.

For those that prefer their numbers in dollars, this means that DVC took in about $130 million dollars in income during those first two months on the Disneyland tower. While it’s likely sales rates will start to taper off next month, it is expected that sales will remain strong. Most predictions say this resort will sell out in about 2 to 3 years.

Meanwhile, sales in Walt Disney World remain strong as well, with 134,000 points sold amongst DVC resorts. The combination of points makes June 2023 the third best month for DVC sales in the last 13 years. The Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa remains the top seller with 75,000 points sold, and the resort is now 64% sold out.  The resort is expected to be officially sold out sometime in 2024.

Disney's Riviera Resort remains the only real dark spot in sales, with a meager 40,000 in sales, down from 42,000 last month. With only 54% of the resort sold, current predictions say this resort will not sell out for at least another 6 years. In third place was Animal Kingdom lodge selling almost 10,000 points with recent incentives.

Villas at Disneyland Hotel (VDH) initial sales strong

DVC News is reporting strong opening sales for the Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Sales started on May 2nd for existing members, and between May 15th and May 31st, 1,151 deeds were registered with Orange County for a total of 147,288 points. Note that this is likely only part of the total sales for the month, and new member sales did not start until May 30th. Average deed size was 128 points and the median size was 150 points, which means more than half the deeds were 150 points or larger.

In addition another 135,000 points were sold at Walt Disney World resorts, with 40% of those sales coming from Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort. Grand Floridian is now 60% sold and expectations are that it will be sold out within the next 12-15 months. Meanwhile Riviera sold 41,500 points - below recent averages. After sales started in April 2019, Riviera is now 54 % sold after 4+ years, and is likely to take at least another 5 to 6 years to sell out. Even taking the COVID-19 pandemic into account, this cannot be seen as a success by DVC.  For instance Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas, which is 15% larger than Riviera, sold out in 7 years without the benefit of luxury rooms or direct resort access. It is likely that Riviera will still be selling long after Grand Floridian, Disneyland Hotel, and even the upcoming Polynesian Tower are sold out.

Trattoria Al Forno Refurbishment going on at Boardwalk

The restaurant was originally scheduled to be closed for refurbishment June 11th through June 17th, but now Disney is reporting it will stay closed until sometime in late June. The restaurant will not be open for dinner, but will provide a limited breakfast menu. Guests with breakfast reservations will still be honored but will be directed to dine in the Flying Fish dining room next door.

The nearby Pizza Window will also be closed until late June.

Villas at Disneyland Hotel (VDH) initial declaration

Commonly, when a new Disney Vacation Club resort opens, only a percentage of the rooms are “declared” as part of the DVC availability for sales and bookings, while the remaining rooms are held for cash rentals. Most resorts historically had an initial declaration around 25%, with Grand Floridian recently declaring roughly 50% of the resort right out the gate.

We now know the details of the Villas at Disneyland Hotel's initial declaration. A total of 61 rooms or 575,000 points have been declared at the resort, amounting to just under 20% of the rooms. The specific rooms that have been declared are as follows:

  • Duo Studio: 8
  • Dedicated Studio: 48
  • Dedicated One Bedroom: 1
  • Lockoff Two Bedroom: 1
  • Dedicated Two Bedroom: 2
  • Grand Villa: 1

This number isn’t broken down into total numbers in each category. The main reason we want to share this information is to show that some booking categories - especially 1 and 2-bedrooms - will have limited availability early on. As sales continue, more rooms of the various categories will be declared.

On May 30th, Disney Vacation Club revealed the new member incentives and updated existing member incentives for the Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Incentives combine a flat developer incentive combined with a number of “Free Points”. For example at 150 points, new buyers get  $1000 discount and 5 “Free” points, a total value of $2150 or ~$14.33 per point. Existing members get an additional $150 over that number. As predicted, these prices are less generous than the original incentives that started on May 2nd and ended on May 29th.

Similar incentives are being offered for Aulani, Riviera, and Grand Floridian. These offers are scheduled to last through September 11th.

Copper Creek Refurbishment scheduled for 2024

As Copper Creek hits seven years of age, its first scheduled refresh has been scheduled. Usually considered a “soft goods” refresh, the refurbishment will begin in April 2024 and continue through August 2024. Rooms will be taken out of service in blocks during this time, so expect availability to be worse than normal during the refurbishment.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster soft opening

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster started running soft opening over the weekend. While the ride is not yet officially on the Disney system nor on Genie+, it has been open every day since May 27th. Word from those that have ridden it say very little has changed, with bright and improved signage being the most significant difference.

Villas at Disneyland Hotel (VDH) current member add-on incentives

New member incentives were posted for the first purchases by existing members. Initial incentives are often the best that occur for a while. Incentives start at 125 points with a $4 per point reduction. The price reduction jumps to $20 at 150 points and goes up slowly past that. (For example, $22 for 200 points, $24 for 300 points.)

Disney announces more changes to park reservations, Genie+ and Dining plans in 2024

In a marketing push for 2024 reservations, Disney announced several changes to vacations coming in 2024.

As of January 9, 2024, multi-day tickets bought to start on a certain date will no longer require park reservations. Single-day tickets, non-dated tickets, and annual passholders “may be required” to use the reservation system.

In 2024, Disney will offer Annual Passholders and cast members “Good-to-Go” days which DON’T require a reservation either. These may vary by the park—no idea what portion of days will fall under this category.

Dining Plans will return starting with a stay on January 9, 2024. Two options will be available initially - The Disney Quick Service Dining Plan and the Disney Dining Plan. Prices have yet to be available, but booking will start May 31st. Last time the dining plans were available, prices were $55 adults / $26 children 3-9 for QS dining plan and $78 adults/$30.50 children 3-9 for full dining plan.

Extended morning hours for resort guests and evening hours for deluxe guests will continue through 2024.

Changes to Genie+ are coming as well, with no details. Still, Disney shared, “We have heard from guests that they would like ways to plan with Disney Genie+ service and individual lightning lane selections before the day of their park visit, and we want you to know we are working on ways guests may do this for visits in 2024. Our goal is to give you the opportunity to spend less time planning in the park and more time enjoying your visit with friends and family.”

Disneyland Forward community events for Summer and Fall

Disney continues to push the “Disneyland Forward” concept with the people and city of Anaheim - a potential future expansion of the Disneyland Resort. The Orange County Register lists nine upcoming events where Disney contacts community members on this topic.

Why is this important to DVC members? The expansion plans would put the Disneyland Hotel and its DVC resort in the center of the possible planned expansion. If you want to take a closer look, go to www.Disneylandforward.com.

While this is more than a rumor, it should be pointed out that Disney has no concrete plans at this time and no guarantee as to when or even if this will happen.

100 point new member minimum returns13 Apr 202300:37:46

DVC announces on-sale date for two 2024 DVC Member Cruises
  • We previously talked about the two DVC member cruises for 2024, which are a 7-night Mediterranean cruise May 18th - 25th and a 5-night Caribbean cruise including two stops at lighthouse point and one at Castaway Cay, June 14th - 19th.
  • Disney has since provided the on-sale date as April 22nd for both cruises. Member cruises frequently sell out very quickly.

Disneyland Magic Keys resume sales in all categories

Disneyland annual passes, known as Magic Keys, have been on and off sale for the last year, and on April 10th, Disney resumed selling all four categories of Magic Keys. Was announced shortly after the announcement that all Walt Disney World Annual Passes would go back on sale. The obvious conclusion is that Disney expects a weak quarter and uses the Annual Passes to increase income.

DVC announces new member buy-in is reduced to 100 points Lead: Peter
  • Disney has lowered the minimum purchase for new members to DVC. Where they had previously raised the minimum to 150 points in June 2021, the number has again been reduced to 100 points minimum.
  • Disney did NOT change the minimum for what they call “Membership Extras” and we often refer to as “Blue Card Benefits”. This still requires 150 points Direct purchase.
  • This also does not effect existing member buying requirements. Existing members can purchase 50 or 25 points as a minimum depending on the resort.
  • The reason for this is likely two-fold; DVC is projecting that many new members at the Disneyland Hotel will be looking for more minor contracts. DVC also has had very soft sales of late. If you think about how Disney has increased prices on older resorts over the current new ones, the minimum buy-in is now more than $30,000 for almost all resorts; they likely wouldn’t realize they are squeezing out a lot of potential customers this way. (Wouldn’t be surprised if this is a common complaint with people taking the tour.) By returning to 100 points, membership becomes affordable to more, and getting people in the door makes it easier to sell them more points later.

Splash Mountain closing in DL on May 30th.

We finally have an announcement for Splash Mountain’s closure in Disneyland, and it’s a month and a half away on May 30th. Replacement for Reedy Creek Improvement District faces challenges

The saga of the new Central Florida Tourism Oversight District has run up against a wall of Disney lawyers, who put in place agreements with the former Reedy Creek Improvement District.

The previous Disney-allied board signed a long-lasting development agreement that drastically limits control over the company and its district. As part of a 30-year development agreement, Disney no longer needs board approval to build high-density projects or buildings of any height and can sell or assign development rights. It also bans the board from using Disney’s name or any of its characters.

The agreement includes a “royal clause” that dates back to 1692 in Britain to determine the limitation of the term. This “Declaration shall continue in effect until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, King of England, living as of the date of this declaration.”

Genie+ being replaced with Lightning Lane Multi Pass

On June 26th, Disney announced Genie+. As of July 24th, Genie+ will be replaced will be replaced by two Lightning Lane systems: Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass.  Both products will be able to be booked in advance. Starting 7 days before the first day of their trip, Walt Disney World resort guests will be able to book passes for their entire length of stay (up to 14 days).  Non-resort guests will be able to book 3 days in advance of their ticket dates.

Lightning Lane Single Pass will remain consistent with Individual Lightning Lane. We expect that the current rides under this system will also remain the same.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass will basically return to the old FastPass+ system, with the ability to book three ride reservations in advance for each day you purchase the product for a single park. Guests will be able to pick from available one-hour return windows for the rides.  The initial bookings will have tier levels, with one tier one ride and two tier two rides selected each day, for all Walt Disney World parks except Animal Kingdom.

Other than the cost, a major difference between FP+ and Lightning Lane Multi Pass is once you use one of your booked Lightning Lane Multi Passes, guests can start booking additional passes. Additional rides appear to have no tier restrictions and can be booked at a different park.

With the recent success of Disney's Old Key West Resort discounted direct sales, Disney Vacation Club has added some discounts to some other sold out resorts. Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort current price is $205 a point, but existing Members can save up to $60 per point. Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas at $210 per point and a maximum discount of $55 per point. Trail’s End Restaurant closing to convert to Quick Service restaurant

Trail’s End Restaurant at The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort appears to be coming to the end of it’s trail, at least in it’s current existence.  This restaurant is scheduled to close in the spring for a refurbishment, and when it re-opens later in the year, it will return as a quick service location.

Trail’s End has been serving buffet meals to Fort Wilderness guests since 1974, but since reopening after COVID, the restaurant has switched to family-style. The restaurant shares a kitchen with Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, but there is not expected to be any change to Hoop-Dee-Doo.

Possible rider size issues during Cast Member previews of TRON Lightcycle Run

The TRON Lightcycle Run has been running cast member previews and there’s been some talk online about size issues. Similar to the issues with Avatar Flight of Passage, some larger people are having a hard time with the seats, though it appears the issue might be worse than Flight of Passage. There are some non-cycle accessible seats on some of the trains, but these seats are limited and the wait for them has been considerably longer.

Walking path from Grand Floridian to MK closing for several months

DVC Points Charts Released for 2024

Disney Vacation Club released the 2024 point charts last week, and the biggest item of note was that there were no significant changes beyond the dates of the holidays shifting. This is the first time in four years that the points charts have stayed the same, as over the last three years Disney has been slowly increasing the amount of points required for staying in October and November while at the same time lowering the number of points required for summer stays.

Splash Mountain at Disney World Closing January 23rd

On December 3rd, Walt Disney World announced that the final day of operation for Splash Mountain will be on January 22nd, with the ride permanently closing for good on January 23rd.

There has been no announcement for the final closing date of Splash Mountain at Disneyland Resort, but the ride is expected to close soon since both rides are scheduled to re-open in late 2024 as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Direct Pricing Increases across Multiple DVC resorts

Disney Vacation Club increased direct pricing for Aulani Disney Vacation Club Villas, Disney's Riviera Resort, and Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to have a base price of $217 per point.

Many other sold-out resorts had direct pricing increase by $10 per point:

  • Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort (now $275)
  • Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge (now $215)
  • Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge (now $250)
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas (now $210)
  • Disney's Beach Club Villas (now $275)
  • Disney's BoardWalk Villas (now $240)
  • Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort (now $165)
  • Disney's Vero Beach Resort (now $150)

Disney's Old Key West Resort and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spas went up as well by $5 to $205 per point. The only resorts to not increase were Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and interestingly Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, which is expected to have new units opening in 2024.

While direct prices are increasing, resale prices are dropping due to a large amount of units on the market. Many DVC contracts can be purchased on the resale market for up to $100 per point less than direct pricing.

RunDisney Reduces Benefit for Volunteers

Volunteers for the recent Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend were surprised when they received park tickets that were not valid until after 1:00 p.m. In the past, Disney would mail out full-day park tickets to each volunteer within 60 days after the conclusion of a race. However, this time they were handing them out as they were leaving the event.

More than a rumor? Direct Pricing going up in December

There have been repeated posts of DVC direct guides indicating to clients that the pricing on all the currently for sale DVC resorts will be increasing by $10 in early December - more specifically December 4th. Base price would go from $207 to $217  per point. While it is not unusual for guides to get hints at changes before they are in place, it is rare that this information would come out so far in advance of a date.

We normally do not share rumors on the DVC Newscast, but in this case with information coming from multiple cast members, we felt that we should share. This would apply to Disney's Riviera Resort, Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas. It is not known if any of the older resort direct prices would be affected.

A new inner tube return system has been added for Runoff Rapids and a Frozen theme to Tike's Peak.  The park will re-open on November 13th for guests to visit from 10 AM to 5 PM. Parks hours are shown on the Walt Disney World calendar through December 30th.

It has also been announced that Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park will be closing for its annual refurbishment on November 13th as well. It is not known at this time whether we will see another closure of Blizzard Beach this winter, or if instead Typhoon Lagoon will get an extended closure.

Disney Cruise Line drops COVID testing requirements

Disney Cruise Line announced that guests would no longer be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before boarding a ship, regardless of their vaccination status.

The official Disney Cruise Line website said the requirement would go into effect starting November 14th for all sailings from the United States.  Unvaccinated passengers still have to test negative before boarding prior to November 14th.

Previously, Disney Cruise Line had required guests 5 years or older to provide a negative COVID-19 test one to two days before their sail date.

Disney Cruise Line says guests booked on impacted sailings through January 31st can modify or cancel by November 13th without any cancellation fees. The standard cancellation policy resumes for changes made on or after November 14th.

Three Favorite Restaurants Re-opening

Beginning November 1, Tusker House Restaurant will be transitioning to an all-you-care-to-enjoy, buffet style dining experience.  This adventurous spot not only has mouthwatering eats, but Donald Duck and some of his Disney pals have taken a break from their safari adventure to celebrate with guests.

At Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Kona Cafe will soon be returning from its recent refurbishment. Beginning November 1, this favorite restaurant will reopen with a refreshed experience. The look, feel, and even some flavors of this relaxed café will be different, yet familiar. Kona Cafe will feature American cuisine with that Asian flare that makes it so unique.

Akershus Royal Banquet Hal will open its doors once again on November 4. This dining experience is found at the Norway pavilion in the World Showcase at EPCOT and gives guests a taste of Norwegian cuisine. Aside from the delicious eats and treats, what makes Akershus Royal Banquet Hall so special is it being home to a unique Storybook Dining featuring the Disney Princesses.

Reservations are available now for both Tusker House Restaurant and Kona Cafe and will be opening up for Akershus Royal Banquet Hall starting October 24.
