Have You Seen the Glimmer Man? | DU Halloween Special, Episode 223 Oct 202600:59:17

What would you do if an invisible figure leapt through the trees above your stand? If you told anybody, they might say you're crazy! Or maybe they've seen it too...

Kyle Philson and Cam Hale of Expanded Perspectives Podcast join Ducks Unlimited’s Wade Shoemaker and Lake Pickle of onX to explore the Glimmer Man: a transparent, human-shaped figure described by hunters and other witnesses around the world. What began with two similar reports grew into an archive of hundreds of stories, collected for you in a new Glimmer Man book. Expanded Perspectives is giving away 10 autographed copies free of charge; use the approved entry link and official rules below.

The group follows one of its most unsettling accounts as the woods fall silent, a watchman-like figure clambers through the treetops, and two hunters realize they had the same encounter with the unknown. Then the conversation turns to Not Deer, the Crossett Light, three orbs circling an Arkansas duck blind, and a 300-pound hog pulled off in the night without a trace.

Unexplained Encounters From Hunters and Anglers | DU Halloween Special, Episode 109 Oct 202600:59:21

What would make someone leave camp, sell every piece of hunting and fishing gear he owned—and never go back?

Cam Hale and Kyle Philson of Expanded Perspectives join Ducks Unlimited’s Wade Shoemaker and Lake Pickle from onX for a DU Halloween special filled with unsettling stories from hunters, anglers and people who spend time beyond the pavement.

The group follows accounts of a hog apparently crushed against a tree, small figures carrying a rabbit through the Arkansas woods, a hunting bag that returned on its own, missing hunters, black panther sightings and six strange figures beside Bloody Creek. They also ask an important question: when does an unexplained encounter have an ordinary answer, and when does it change the way someone sees the woods forever?

Hunters have observed and debated changes in duck migration and winter distributions for as long as both have existed. Now, new research helps answer some of the biggest questions.

In this special collaboration between the Ducks Unlimited Podcast and the North American Waterfowler Podcast, DU's Senior Waterfowl Scientist, Dr. Mike Brasher, joins Elliott Snider; Dr. Lisa Webb, Supervisor, USGS Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Program; and Dr. Heath Hagy, Project Leader, USFWS Habitat and Population Evaluation Team, to break down the findings of two recent studies that shed light on this captivating and hotly contested topic.

The studies and conversation explore more than 60 years of waterfowl band recovery, harvest survey, and distribution data to examine whether ducks are wintering farther north than they once did. The group discusses what the studies found, where migration patterns appear to be changing, where they're not, and why answering these questions is far more complicated than many people realize.

Topics Covered

  • Are ducks wintering farther north?
  • What 60 years of band recovery data reveals
  • Differences between mallards, pintails, and blue-winged teal
  • Why migration changes vary by species and month
  • The role of weather, habitat, and agriculture
  • What hunters see versus what large-scale datasets show
  • How migration science is studied and evaluated
  • What questions still remain unanswered
  • How none of this would be possible without hunters

A few weeks ago, the Klamath Basin was facing a potentially devastating botulism outbreak. Today, there’s some much-needed good news.

Dr. Mike Brasher, DU's Senior Waterfowl Scientist, reconnects with Jeff McCreary, Director of Operations for the Western Region, to share an important update from the Klamath Basin and the efforts that helped prevent a catastrophic die-off of ducks.

Following months of drought, low snowpack, declining water levels, and an emerging botulism outbreak, conservation partners, water users, agencies, and tribes worked together to move critical water into the Klamath Refuges. Combined with cooler temperatures and rain, those efforts dramatically improved conditions and halted this year's botulism threat. As a result, tens of thousands of newly hatched ducks will be taking flight this fall, boosting the hopes of duck hunters throughout the flyway.

Topics Covered

  • What changed in the Klamath Basin since the last update
  • How collaborative water management helped stop a larger outbreak
  • Why additional water made such a difference
  • The role of cooler weather and rainfall
  • Waterfowl production estimates for the region
  • What this means for Pacific Flyway hunters this fall
  • The future of the flow-through water concept

Decoy collecting isn’t just about objects — it’s about history, craftsmanship, and the people who built the tradition.

In this episode of the Ducks Unlimited Podcast, host Katie Burke sits down with longtime collector Bill Dodge at the North American Decoy Collectors Association show. Recorded in one of the show’s unique “room‑to‑room” dealer spaces, the conversation offers an inside look at the world of vintage decoys and the community behind it.

Bill shares how a single purchase at a farm auction sparked a lifetime passion for collecting — eventually leading him to focus on factory-made decoys, particularly those tied to the historic Detroit makers. They also break down what defines a “factory decoy,” the evolution of materials and craftsmanship, and the balance between standardization and hand-finished detail. From early catalog sales to regional styles and grading systems, the episode highlights how these decoys bridged utility and artistry during a critical period in waterfowling history.

Beyond the technical side, Bill emphasizes the importance of mentorship, relationships, and shared knowledge within the collecting community — a recurring theme that defines both collectors and conservationists.

This episode offers a deeper appreciation for decoys not just as tools, but as artifacts that tell the story of hunting, innovation, and tradition.

Learn what’s driving a new botulism outbreak in the Klamath Basin and what conservation partners are doing to help protect thousands of waterfowl.

Host Dr. Mike Brasher is joined by Jeff McCreary, Ducks Unlimited’s Director of Operations for the Western Region, and Dr. Dan Smith, DU waterfowl scientist, to discuss deteriorating habitat conditions in one of North America’s most important waterfowl landscapes.

After a winter of record-low snowpack and a spring that produced exceptional numbers of ducklings, water levels in the Klamath Basin are rapidly declining.  Those conditions have created an elevated risk of avian botulism, threatening young ducks and molting birds concentrated on the region’s wetlands. Jeff and Dan explain how the outbreak developed, why the Klamath Basin remains critical to the Pacific Flyway, and how Ducks Unlimited and partners are working to bring additional water into the refuge system before conditions worsen.

Topics Covered

  • Why botulism outbreaks occur during drought conditions
  • The connection between snowpack, water availability, and wetland health
  • How more than 100,000 ducklings were produced despite current challenges
  • What “flow-through” water management could mean for the Klamath Basin
  • The importance of Lower Klamath and Tule Lake refuges
  • Why collaboration is essential to solving long-term water issues
  • How DU and partners are responding to current conditions

As eastern mallards declined in the early 2000s, waterfowl managers developed a new approach for setting duck harvest frameworks in the Atlantic Flyway. Termed “multi-stock management,” this approach steps away from mallards and relies on 4 species that better capture harvest opportunities for eastern hunters. Dr. Min Huang and Dr. Pat Devers rejoin the podcast to provide details behind this approach and discuss other issues on the horizon for waterfowl management in the U.S.
