Best Quality Vacuum 119: JMM03 Oct 202600:37:12

This episode is a very strong argument for having initials that can’t be twisted around to make a motto that will haunt you for the rest of your days. The Jimmy and cartel plot lines collide as Lalo enlists him to arrange for bond, so he can escape being imprisoned for the murder of Fred Whalen. The problem is? He has to pick up the money.

Watch Out For Fireballs 530: Cultic01 Oct 202601:17:27

Cultic is a boomer shooter unlike any that we’ve played, being equal parts Blood and Resident Evil 4. You play as the Detective, who woke up in a cult’s mass grave and must now go on a rampage to stop them. What results is one of the best games we’ve played this year.

Abject Suffering 681: Magic Boy28 Sep 202600:34:29

Magic Boy is another stilted puzzle platformer with that Amiga stink on it. You are some kind of magical boy, and it’s up to you to stun and basement escaped magical animals so even worse things don’t happen. What really matters is that Gary threw a pool party recently, and we got to cavort.

Best Quality Vacuum 118: Wexler v. Goodman26 Sep 202600:43:57

This standout episode of season five sees the culmination of Jimmy and Kim’s plot against Kevin Wachtell… even if Kim tried to pull the plug at the last minute. This leads to a blow up with a very unpredictable outcome that gives us a lot to chew on.

[PREVIEW] QUAKSTAK 44: Medieval Weapons24 Sep 202600:05:00

You’ll buy the whole Arms & Equipment Guide, but you’ll only need the nine weapons we narrow it down to after we rank the best medieval weaponry. What’s the benefit of a scimitar? Are bows too basic for consideration? Is boiling oil worth the logistical hurdles?

Welcome to all the new listeners at the Duck tier! There’s plenty of QuakStak to go back and listen to.

We also talk about:

  • Gwen’s tour!

  • Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma!

Abject Suffering 680: Minute to Win It21 Sep 202600:47:39

In the DS/Wii/Kinect shovelware bonanza, nothing was off limits, including a Guy Fieri show that was just "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" for dummies. Featuring finicky touch screen control versions of bizarre physical challenges, Minute to Win It for the DS is the bottom of the crop. We also talk about the inscrutable musical act that is Puddles' Pity Party.

Real Lich Hours 130: The Funeral20 Sep 202600:59:05

With the Ripper dead, we join Sam’s sister Jessica at the funeral she’s throwing for Sam and their mother. Little did we know that she’s the reason Sam died, and there’s cults about. This means we’re headed deep into the Universal Brotherhood.

[PREVIEW] Watch Out for Fireballs! 529: Pacific Drive (Premium)17 Sep 202600:05:00

Do you love cars? Are you ready to be forced to love a very specific car? That’s what Pacific Drive is all about, you and your car against a bizarre zone of anomalous chaos. It’s not quite horror, and the survival mechanics aren’t everything you’d expect them to be, but this roguelike will challenge you to take care of your station wagon so it will take care of you. It’s just too bad that the story and tone are a shade too cartoony for the gravitas the developers were aiming for.

This is a premium episode! To hear the full version, back us at patreon.com/duckfeedtv.

Unfilmable 100: Freaks16 Sep 202601:14:01

For the 100th episode of Unfilmable, and our first public episode of the show, we go all the way back to 1932 to talk about Freaks, a pre-code movie that’s often billed as a horror movie but is in reality a surprisingly compassionate morality tale. Cleopatra is a circus performer plotting to seduce and kill Hans, a little person singer, in order to steal his vast inheritance. But the other performers have something to say about that…

This show is public now! Which means give it ratings and reviews and such! Share it!

The Pivot Presents: Cutthroat Kvetchin' 11: Un-Holy Trinity15 Sep 202601:21:31

WHY WILL NO ONE TELL US WHAT THE HOLY TRINITY OF JAMBALAYA IS PUT IT IN THE COMMENTS IF YOU KNOOOOOOW!!!!

Abject Suffering 679: Super Morph14 Sep 202600:33:23

Super Morph is a PAL-only puzzle platformer that’s actually pretty neat. A young boy’s neglectful uncle put him into a matter transporter, and now the boy is trapped in flux between different states of matter. He must solve puzzles to find the gears that will fix the machine so he can return to his normal, human form. There are so many 16-bit PAL-only games we never got!

We also discuss the appeal of going dead weight, asking nicely to see airport jail, establishing situational awareness, acquiring paydata, and the rejection of the Order of the Triad Venture Bros. spinoff.

Best Quality Vacuum 116: Namaste12 Sep 202600:41:17

When Howard sweeps in to give Jimmy the job offer he's waited more than a decade for, Jimmy has a... paradoxical reaction. Meanwhile Kim, Kim enlists his help with the Acker situation, and Gus sacrifices a lot of money to get the DEA off his back. Also, we argue over whether or not Mike was trying to commit suicide by dude.

The Level 597: Bennis12 Sep 202601:50:19

Kaye, Ben, Dennis, and Jala talk about Low-Budget Repairs, Star Wars: Zero Company, some PAX West experiences, and much more!

  • Kaye: Low-Budget Repairs.

  • Ben: Marvel Snap.

The Multiplayer:

  • The most satisfying moments in games.

The End Boss:

  • XBox to impose cloud gaming rations.

  • KillZone bring revived.

  • Valve made a slur leaderboard.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 114: The Resident Evil Interactive Experience (Audio Version)10 Sep 202600:05:00

It's time for a very special Adaptation Decay! This August, Gary, Liv, and Kaye packed up and headed to Las Vegas to visit the Resident Evil Interactive Experience, a limited time takeover of Universal Horror Unleashed. Listen to us talk about the scares, the set design, the puzzles, and the food created to honor Resident Evil's 30 year anniversary.

This episode is extra special because we made a video for it, as you can see above! This is a labor of love, because we wanted to capture the experience and relate it to you as we talk about how successful it is.

We also discuss the other Universal Horror Unleashed haunted houses, and go in-depth on Meow Wolf's Omega Mart installation.

This is a video-first episode! Check out this post to see footage from the event.

Next month we'll be talking about the Zach Cregger Resident Evil movie!

Watch Out for Fireballs 528: The Saboteur10 Sep 202601:46:44

Pandemic Studios really knew what they were doing, and it’s a real shame their style of destruction-based open world games didn’t become the norm. That’s how you’ll feel when you play the Saboteur, the studio’s swan song. You are Sean Devlin, an Irish racecar driver who joins the French Resistance during World War II to get revenge on the Nazis. You may only be aware of this game because of its black and white-to-color visual trick, but there’s so much more to recommend it.

Duckfeed is Evolving10 Sep 202600:32:05

Hey folks! This will be a longer post detailing some changes that are coming up for Duckfeed in the next few months. When we ask listeners what they like about the network, they'll often bring up our transparency. It's one of our main values, so that's why we will be providing the rationale for each announcement so you know why we're making the changes.

There will be a TL;DR at the end for those who just want to see what's changing.

Big TL;DR at the top: Nobody's prices are raising. Quite the contrary. If you're grandfathered you're still grandfathered, and you'll be getting more stuff.

If you've paid attention this summer, you've noticed that we've been doing some new stuff... like actually promoting ourselves on social media. This is the result of conversations we're having about the future of the network, what's working, what isn't, and most of all how we can grow. We've taken information we gathered in the most recent surveys and making these changes to hopefully get bigger as a network.

In order to grow, we are simplifying our Patreon, offering more, and changing what it means for shows and episodes to be premium or public. Additionally, we are removing self-imposed limitations on our most popular shows in order to plan more effectively and intentionally and ultimately make a better product.

With all of that in mind, here we go:

One paid membership tier at $7

Splitting show offerings across multiple tiers sucks to communicate about! It's muddled. If you come to Duckfeed and want to give us money, we want it to be easy to understand what you're getting, and the most valuable thing we can offer is content.

So everyone who wants premium content will back at the Duck tier at $7 monthly, or $77 per year, and you'll get everything. This includes everything that is currently premium, even things that are currently at the Eagle tier. We want people to hear Adaptation Decay and QuakStak! You'll also get anything we cook up for Duckfeed Presents, or limited run seasonal series like Future CIA Torture Songs.

This will be in addition to a Free Tier which gets you access to our Discord community. There will be higher tiers that are strictly suggestions for people who want to support us more out of the kindness of their hearts.

We will be leaving your pledges in place as they are, just changing what is available at the available tiers. If you are currently grandfathered at the $5 tier, you will still get the extra content.

Fewer premium shows, more premium episodes

Our most popular shows, the ones featuring Gary and Kaye hosting together, will all be moving to the same premium model that Watch Out for Fireballs! is on. That is, the shows will be public but one episode per month will be premium.

Specifically, this change affects Abject Suffering, Real Lich Hours, Unfilmable, and Bonfireside Chat (when it comes back). Everything to Guppy, The Level, Adaptation Decay, and QuakStak are unchanged.

It makes the most sense to us to spread the WOFF! model across the network to make things more uniform. And it works better with the aforementioned Patreon tier changes. We understand that it will be awkward for a public listener to have those gaps, but if they like the show we want them to patronize us... and we're sick of pretending we don't want them to!

What this means for Real Lich Hours: The timeframe for Real Lich Hours episodes going (mostly) public is ASAP.

What this means for Abject Suffering: One Abject Suffering episode per month will be premium, and this will be communicated.

A Note on Bonfireside Chat and the Duskbloods: We do not know if Bonfireside Chat is coming back for the Duskbloods. The network test made it feel like more Nightreign and thus resistant to our treatment. There are changes coming to the full version that might make it more suitable. Keep an ear out.

Content that was released as premium previously will remain premium unless we opt to make it public for promotional reasons.

Unfilmable is going weekly

Unfilmable is consistently the most popular show on our Patreon that doesn't somehow relate to FromSoft. We're very proud of it, we love doing it, we want to do more of it, and we want more people to hear it.

To that end, Unfilmable will be released weekly, with one episode per month being premium. This will necessitate some changes in format. Do you remember our episode on The Substance? A looser conversation rather than a play by play? More episodes will follow that format. Going weekly also opens the door for more easy coverage of a TV show (multi-part coverage goes down easier weekly, we find).

We're also going to broaden the scope of what's covered. We've already gone from strictly horror to the Feel-Bad Rainbow, with some real genre bends (American Movie, Gremlins 2). We're going to have genre bends more often now, as a treat. Unfilmable will be the steady parade of bleakness and terror you love, but sometimes we might talk about, I dunno, Total Recall or Wayne's World or something. Think Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. We gotta talk about Large Marge somehow. Unfilmable will be a place for media talk that doesn't fit Adaptation Decay.

With this, we're retiring our "TV slot" with the end of Best Quality Vacuum. Promised coverage of Review will happen under the Unfilmable banner (We would argue it's extremely bleak TV), at a non Episode by Episode pace.

This is a hard decision! We like talking about TV, but the truth is it's not a very popular show on our network, and covering a single TV show alienates a big group of our audience who has no interest in that show. By rolling such coverage into Unfilmable, we'll be able to talk about stuff we love but not commit to an entire show that comparatively few people will listen to.

Timeframe: Unfilmable will go weekly once Best Quality Vacuum ends. However, it will become a public show earlier than that, basically as soon as possible.

Also on the Unfilmable tip, we are raising the price to $300 for a sponsorship in order to accommodate demand. This comes with a widened scope for what we'll accept as a sponsorship. Sponsoring works like The Terror is no longer untenable.

Watch Out for Fireballs! is changing more subtly

The changes we're making to Watch Out for Fireballs! are more procedural on our end, but we believe they will result in a better show. Specifically we will be changing sponsored episodes and relaxing about game length in order to do more two-parters. Our goal is to be able to plan further in advance and to do so more intentionally.

We are going to be limiting sponsorships to 3 per quarter, at $450 apiece. This change comes with increased scope for what your sponsorship money will get you. This doesn't mean we'll do everything, but we will be more open to longer games under this new schema.

We will be opening up each quarter's sponsorship sales a few months in advance, for planning purposes. That means when you are reading this, Q1 2027 sponsorships are open, and when they're sold they're sold.

We are also divorcing specific types of games from specific seasons. Having a Summer JRPG and a Winter WRPG were both comforting rhythms for us, but they would be an awkward fit for how we want to plan out a better variety of long and short games of different genres and profiles each quarter.

Premium WOFF! episodes aren't going anywhere but occasionally the month's premium will be Part 2 of longer coverage, which is something we've avoided doing in the past.

Why are we doing this? It's worth noting we're actually going to lose money by reducing the number of sponsorships we take in a year, but we're doing it anyway because we want more flexibility. Right now, we get in a bind, being booked out 6-9 months with sponsorships, and trying to fit small games around large games.

We also want to talk about more kinds of games, including, big games a lot of people have played. We love getting exposed to obscure indies through our audience, but I think in the last year or so we've lost the balance. WOFF! is our flagship program, and we want to make it the best show we can.

That's basically it! This is a lot of changes, but we've thought long and hard about them in relation to the data from the surveys you answered.

Our hope is to make the Patreon more attractive, simple, and comprehensive. We also want to take a firmer hand over our content schedule to cover a wider variety of games on our flagship show Watch Out for Fireballs!, and give you more volume and variety of media covered on Unfilmable.

The timetable for when these changes will take place is currently up in the air (excepting the ones outlined firmly above), but expect the bulk to hit around the beginning of 2027.

If you have any questions, please ask them. There are always little things we haven't thought of, but we will do our best to answer whatever you ask. Because like we said, we want to be as transparent as possible.

With love,
Gary and Kaye

TL;DR
  • All of our premium content is being bundled up into one tier, Duck, which will be priced at $7.

    • The Free Tier grants access to our Discord Community.

  • Unfilmable is going weekly in the new year and we're going to cover different kinds of media from time to time.

    • We are retiring our "TV Slot" to sometimes talk TV on Unfilmable.

  • Most shows will be public, with one premium episode per month, a la Watch Out for Fireballs.

    • This applies to Abject Suffering, Bonfireside Chat when it returns, Real Lich Hours, and Unfilmable (in addition to Watch Out for Fireballs!). This will start immediately for the applicable shows.

  • Watch Out for Fireballs! sponsorships are increasing to $450 and we will sell three of them per quarter, and longer games will fit into this.

  • Unfilmable sponsorships are increasing to $300 and will be limited to 6 per quarter.

Monster Blitz Pt. 98 OR The One Recorded Above The Oregon State Fair08 Sep 202600:33:02

Sorry this one is shorter than usual; blame Gary's nipple.

Abject Suffering 678: Scooby-Doo Night of 100 Frights!07 Sep 202600:32:08

Some intellectual properties are like PFAS. Once introduced to the environment, they will never go away, just sitting and warping whatever they touch. The Hannah-Barbera archives are a superfund site of these, and no property has stuck around like Scooby-Doo. Night of 100 Frights has the distinction of being a very faithfully created 3D version of something that wasn’t great in the first place, attached to rote 3D platformer gameplay.

We also discuss exercise games, Scooby-Doo honoring the victims of 9/11, and mourning Dolly Parton and Tim Curry.

[PREVIEW] Real Lich Hours 128: NTSB Warehouse06 Sep 202600:05:00

The Ripper strikes again! This time, it’s an unlucky someone down at the National Transportation Safety Board warehouse with a chest cavity full of soup. The problem is, there are no witnesses. At least, there are no corporeal witnesses.

Best Quality Vacuum 115: The Guy for This05 Sep 202600:39:02

Someone call Powerman 5000 because we’ve found out what it’s like when worlds collide. Following a cartoonish affair last episode, Jimmy’s plot and the cartel plot run straight into each other as Lalo reaches out to Jimmy to help clean up the mess with Krazy-8’s arrest.

Watch Out for Fireballs 527: Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel03 Sep 202601:34:32

We’re running out of Fallout games to cover! Which means we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel to bring you a close look at the memory-holed PS2 and XBox entry into the series: Brotherhood of Steel. It’s a Dark Alliance-like that demonstrates that one of those can actually be a lot worse than the others, and it’s all made worse by how poorly it handles the Fallout setting.

Abject Suffering 676: DJ Boy24 Aug 202600:34:50

DJ Boy is a beat-em-up on roller skates. Roller blades? No, skates. The most hip-hop conveyance imaginable. That’s because this is a game steeped in a very removed Japanese understanding of US hip hop culture, which comes with some extremely uncomfortable racial depictions. Also, it’s time to hear about Kaye’s dental woes instead of Gary’s!

Real Lich Hours 126: Pike Place23 Aug 202600:57:02

Pike’s Place is a famous tourist trap in real life, but in Shadowrun… it’s also a tourist trap. But there are also active murder scene investigations, VR drug dens, and some leads on the people who might know what happened to our friend Sam.

Balan Wonderworld is so infamous that sometimes you wonder if it could actually ever be that bad. Chat, it’s very bad. It ranks right behind chronically mistreating his workers on the list of worst things Yuji Naka has ever done. It’s so bad that we remain on topic for the whole episode.

Watch Out for Fireballs 525: Ogre Battle 64 (Part 2)13 Aug 202601:44:18

This week we continue our discussion of Ogre Battle 64, a sprawling and mysterious strategy game that eventually sheds the need for using strategy all together. It’s also a story of revolution that stops being about a revolution partway through. This leaves us in the frustrating position of wanting to like it more than we actually do.

Thanks again Will for executive producing this!

Our highlighted project for this week is the creator Mech Amalia, who reviews Gunpla and plays games on her YouTube channel and Instagram.

The Pivot Presents: Cutthroat Kvetchin' 7: Tiny Tools, Big Problems11 Aug 202601:16:16

I just want to acknowledge that Gary says "Cuck Finn" at one point during this episode and I talked over it and it was very funny.

Abject Suffering 674: Whiplash10 Aug 202600:34:41

Portal didn’t invent the story about the banal cruelty of corporate super science, but it sure did it better than Whiplash. You play a weasel who has a rabbit chained to you, hopping and bopping to try to escape from a laboratory. And while it promises sweet grappling hook action, all it delivers is disappointment. We also talk about Gary’s evolving battle with, and respect for, the Tree of Heaven.

Real Lich Hours124: Dead Man's Switch09 Aug 202601:00:29

This week we begin Dead Man’s Switch, the first of the three Shadowrun Returns games. Our runner is at the end of their rope, penniless and without any leads on jobs. Best Quality Vacuum 111: Winner08 Aug 202600:57:46

Watch Out For Fireballs 524: Ogre Battles 64 (Part 1)06 Aug 202602:16:23

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber was a big game that many, including us, missed out on. It’s a followup to a cult classic RTS for the SNES, and it follows Magnus Gallant, a young noble who ends up leading a revolution against his own kingdom. This is a strange game mostly known for its obscure mechanics, but it’s very much in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre in its story and presentation.

This episode covers the game’s generalities, the prologue, and the first chapter.

Big thanks to Will for executive producing this episode!
