Jim Zumbo, outdoor hunter/fisherman/ outdoor writer/forester/biologist/book author/tv show host/speaker was long hunting editor for Outdoor Life magazine and writer for many other outdoor publications. Jim has lost count of the feature articles he’s written and of the TV shows he hosted on the Outdoor Channel. A native of New York, Jim headed West shortly after college. These days is known as the consummate “westerner”. His moustache, black hat and ready smile have long been his trademark. For many years Jim has been one of my personal heroes, mentors but more importantly a best friend. I recorded this interview recorded in Oklahoma, on the property previously owned by Miranda Lambert, entertainer extraordinaire. Jim, Rick Lambert (Miranda’s dad) and I were there fishing for bluegills, one of Jim’s favorite fish. During our conversation Jim and I covered a lot of ground occasionally serenaded by Roadie, Rick Lambert’s dog. I know you’ll enjoy our visit! Learn more about your ad choices. EP:191 Rick Lambert, Man of Many Talents26 Jul 202300:32:25
Rick Lambert truly is as man of many talents including songwriting, playing guitar, entrepreneur who owns Red 55 Winery and the Pourhouse in Lindale Texas, outdoor chef who loves cooking in cast iron, fisherman, a consummate turkey hunter and hunter of many other things in North America and in Africa. He also happens to be the father of Miranda Lambert. However, to me more importantly, he is “Rick” a dear friend for numerous years. I caught up with my old friend while he, Jim Zumbo and I were in Oklahoma on the ranch that Miranda used to own. Our goal was to catch several “messes” of bluegills to send back to Wyoming with Zumbo, eat good, tell a few hunting yarns, and simply enjoy each other’s company while kicking back and relaxing. Visiting with Rick I learned a bit about his turkey hunting adventures and a few other things I know our listeners will enjoy hearing about Learn more about your ad choices. EP:190 Visiting with Ms. Kay and Jerry Miculek19 Jul 202300:39:58
According to Wikapedia, Jerry Miculek is referred to as "The Greatest Shooter of All Times". Rightfully so, he holds numerous world speed shooting records but also hit a small target at 1,000 yards shooting a 9mm handgun, off-hand. His doing so impresses me more than his world speed shooting records. Kay's father was Jimmy Clark, one of the world's best pistolsmiths and shooters. He taught his daughter early on how to shoot handguns and shoot them ultra accurately. She has collected many Gold and Silver Medals shooting in World IPSC competitions as well as in other handgun competitions. Jerry and Kay Miculek combined are without a doubt two of the world's best and most known and recognized shooters. In this episode we talk about a lot of things, but mostly not about shooting competitions and more about hunting, wildlife and growing up in the country! Learn more about your ad choices. EP:189 A Hunting Camp Visit with Mossberg's Linda Powell12 Jul 202300:43:57
Linda Powell is no stranger to those who hunt and shoot. In the outdoor world she has made a definitive "mark"! It's been my pleasure and honor to have known "Ms. Linda" for a goodly number of years and during that time calling her a dear friend even though for several years we worked for competitive gun companies. For the past several years Linda has been deeply involved with Mossberg and their PR, Media and Marketing. She is a serious hunter and outdoors person with a tremendous amount of experience. Even though she did not start out as a hunter, she has now hunted throughout the world. Linda too was instrumental in my hunting with Mossberg Patriot rifles. I recently was able to catch with my friend while sharing a black bear hunting camp with her and a few other friends. I know you will enjoy and appreciate her insight and some of her experiences which we addressed within this episode. EP:185 Raging Hunter Takes Cape Buffalo07 Jun 202300:29:22
The African Cape Buffalo is often referred to as "Black Death", a reputation rightfully earned. Rober Ruark described his kind,"He looks at you like you owe him money!" To that quote I would, having hunted Cape buffalo several times, add, "And he's come to collect it!" His size, tenacity and attitude truly make him a formidable adversary even when you are hunting with a cigar-sized rifle round. Taurus' Bret Vorhees ventured into the African jess in search of buffalo, not with a double or bolt action rifle, but with hisTaurus Raging Hunter .460 S&W Magnum revolver. In this episode Larry visits with Bret about his most exciting hunt, Africa at its finest!" EP:176 | DSC Campfires with Larry Weishuhn talks with event organizer Bruce Boroski.23 Mar 202300:39:31
A few years ago Dallas Safari Club also known as DSC started setting up chapters across the USA with the intentions of also creating chapters in other parts of the world. Don't let the term "safari" throw you. Safari is simply another word for "adventure". Nor let "Dallas" throw you either because DSC is indeed a worldwide conservation organization whose primary goals are conservation, education and hunter advocacy. Recently DSC brought former law enforcement officer, currently outfitter, and event organizer Bruce Boroski on board to work with current DSC Chapters and to expand the DSC Chapter system. While in Connecticut for the NorthEast Chapter Banquet I had the opportunity to sit down with Bruce to talk to him about what makes DSC Chapters unique in the world of NGO's, how you can become involved in an existing chapter, start a new DSC chapter as well as visiting about some of his past hunting experiences, some of which truly are "interesting"! 168 DSC Campfires with Larry Weishuhn When a Hunting Trip Becomes a Camping Trip18 Nov 202200:54:13
Recently ace cameraman and fabulous artist Jeremiah Bennett and I spent several days in Baja California, Mexico pursuing ghosts. Or so it seems. We were in Baja to film me hunting Baja blacktail deer, a subspecies of the Columbian blacktail found from Washington to the lower regions of California for an episode of "Trijicon's World of Sports Afield" which airs on Sportsman's Channel, but also for a segment for "A Sportsman's Life" our weekly digital tv show that airs on CarbonTV.com. We were told by our outfitter the blacktail subspecies were not overly plentiful, but he saw no reason to shoot a buck unless it was at least representative of the species..which to me meant we should see a couple of bucks during out 5-day hunt. I was also told upon my arrival to San Diego, CA, my rifle permit had not been procured, and I could wait for it be signed, which might take days, or use a borrowed rifle. Upon reaching camp we drove through some of the spectacular high desert terrain and vegetation that likely exists on Earth. Our camp was a comfortable cabin. The rifle handed me was an ancient bolt action, topped with a scope I did not recognize, and a hand full of full metal jacket bullet cartridges. The no rifle permit..should have keyed me to what to expect on the trip. In this episode Larry and cameraman, Jeremiah Bennett discuss their hunt, the ups and downs that turned a hunting trip in a long, no-deer, camping trip Learn more about your ad choices. 167 DSC Campfires with Larry Weishuhn Teaching an Old Hunter New Tricks10 Nov 202200:37:13
When I first started hunting whitetails trail cameras, computer programs were hardly even anyone's dream, much less a reality. Maps of your hunting country were usually hand-drawn after walking property, who owned the land next door were learned by knocking on their doors, when deer moved was determined from year's of hunting experience, finding your way around in unfamiliar territory was most often accomplished by using a compass. Serious hunters had much to learn and considerable to remember. With the advent of computers and computer programs and apps, trail cameras and the like, much of what it took hunters years to learn and "store in between their ears", and a whole lot more is now available at their fingertips. This thanks to HuntStand and Brian Murphy. Most of you will remember Brian from his many faithful and excellent years at Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA), but now with HuntStand. Brian with the help of some "computer experts" has come up with fabulous programs that will make you a much better and successful deer hunter regardless of whether your and "old ranger" like me, or someone who in the past few days decided he or she wanted to put quality meals on they and their families dinner table. In this episode Brian brings me and our listeners to a new level of hunting whitetail deer, and learning more from using the new HuntStand app than I did in nearly a lifetime of pursuing America's deer! And to make things even better HuntStand is partnering with DSC, the world's premier wildlife conservation organization. 164 DSC Campfires with Larry Weishuhn Hunting with Brandon Houston14 Oct 202200:39:55
"Hunting brings people together, unlike any other outdoor activity. I became friends with Brandon Houston on a deer hunt he invited me to, on one of the properties he manages for wildlife with emphasis on whitetail deer, but also non-game species. Brandon, like me, is a professional wildlife biologist. Soon after becoming friends he asked me to become involved in his H3 Whitetail Solutions wildlife management consulting company, which not only works with whitetail deer but all wildlife and their habitat. Hunting for whitetails with Brandon on my hunting lease in western Texas this time was for does with my Taurus Raging Hunter .454 Casull revolver, topped with a Trijicon SRO red-dot sight, and shooting Hornady's 300-grain XTP Custom ammo. During the hunt Brandon and I were also able to do a fair bit of exploring, as well camp cooking and sitting on water holes or near to them. We were able to each take a whitetail doe. The conversation on this episode starts out with Brandon and Larry having found an old stone building which originally served as a U. S. Calvary outpost when the lands west of San Angelo, Texas were still populated with marauding bandits, and the occasional attacks on settlers by the native American who resented western expansion."
