Albariño has come a long way in two decades. Unknown beyond its Galician home until the '90s, its fame and farming have spread from Spain's Atlantic Ocean-facing Rias Baixas to the US where it's found homes throughout the west. Its fecundity and deliciousness make for pleasurable production and consumption. Umpqua Valley's Abacela Winery,, Sonoma County's Marimar Torres Estate, and Horse Heaven HIlls' Coyote Canyon Winery have been pioneers with this aromatic variety in their respective states.

Co-host Carlo DeVito joins David for a peek into the HV's oldest craft distillery with Derek Grout of Valatie's Harvest @ Golden Farms and what's likely one undergoing the fastest expansion with Andrew Richards of Millbrook's Shady Knoll. While wines have been grown and vinified in what's now Palestine for millennia, the modern context for these wines began during the late 19th century Cremisan winery, founded by French monks and which continues. Cremisan's Italian-educated winemaker today works with indigenous grapes found nowhere else, and is joined likewise in the US market and on this DotE episode by Philokalia winery's self-taught owner/winemaker.

After 33 years working with wine, it's a rarity that David tastes wines made from new grapes or from new areas. Drood of Iran--made in Sweden-- ticks both these boxes. Its owner, Iranian native, and DotE guest Shahram Soltani harvests old vine varieties grown at 2000+ meters altitude then transports them to his new home and winemaking facility in Sweden to create his first wines from the 2021 vintage--the first in the world made from grapes originating from Iran and sold legitimately by an Iranian.

Long time organic, now biodynamic, Reyneke Wines of South Africa's famed Stellenbosch region was one of David's favorites when visiting in 2013. Its proprietor, Johan Reyneke, recently hired Barbara Melck as his full time winemaker--and to good effect. Vinho Verde has of late risen in quality and availability. A close and arguably more inspired cousin to this broad category of mostly white wine made in Portugal's vast, northern Minho region is the Cerdeira family's Soalheiro winery in Melgaço.

As the pioneer for the increasing quality of his region's Alvarinho grape variety--a.k.a. Spain's Albariño--I'd the pleasure in 2011 of visiting the inspiration for this, João, accompanied by his then-young son Luís. With many bottles of Soalheiro enjoyed before & after visiting Portugal's restaurants, and when living in England and here, I revisited it taking a DotE deep dive with Luís who oversees the family estate alongside his sister Maria and their mother Maria.

Upon graduating from Vassar College, Nicole Sierra-Rolet floated into an expected, successful Manhattan career in international relations. Upon meeting an intriguing Frenchman her life took a widely divergent course which led her, her eventual husband, and his family in France to develop La Verrière. With time and effort from this Provençal property grew Chêne Bleu, a wine brand cultivated with native grapes--Grenache, Syrah, Rolle and more--of southern France. But with projects like Areni Global, a sometime wine school, and developing her alma mater's Institute of Liberal Arts, Sierra-Rolet hasn't and won't rest.

From diving into his wines with foods of many kinds, Skouras family scion Dimitris details how his father and he for decades have been at the forefront of modernizing Greek wines. New York's Finger Lakes region, famed for its farmed grapes and grains, has grown from a summer-only respite from city life into a year-round destination location for all manner of adult beverage producers. While wine remains #1 and continues to grow, brewers and distillers (and cideries) have recently bloomed tasing advantage of its rich agricultural heritage and scenic surroundings.

This DotE explores a sliver of the finest the FLX offers. Native daughter Nova Cadamatre returned during the Covid Era from California with her family after achieving wine biz greatness as lead winemaker at Robert Mondavi Winery and earning the rare Master of Wine assignation to open her and her husband's Trestle 31 Vineyard.

Along the shores of Seneca Lake, FLX Distilling's Brian McKenzie staked out his claim several years ago as the area's first microdistillery, and one focused on using locally-sourced grains. A founding member of the Empire Rye initiative, Brian's neighborliness extends to sharing his knowledge and used barrels with his friends at Lucky Hare Brewing, so he spoke not only about his fine spirits but also some beers he's keen on.

In an effort to set the bar weirdly, David's first Drinking on the Edge was buoyed by a round of unusual beers, wines, and spirits. First up were two Belgian beers from the relatively large (for Belgium) Timmerman's brewery; a 2012 vintage Gueuze and a 2019 Kriek (cherry) shared with Epicurean regular Mike. Secondly he popped corks on two bottles of Spain's leading bubbly, Cava; a fresh & young basic brut from Vilarnau best-suited for relaxing after (or during) a tough day at work, the second a serious 2015 vintage Gran Reserva from Roger Goulart. Third and finally he was helped along in tasting a Mexican spirit native to the Chihuahuan Desert, sotol, by Epicurean whiskey lover Martin. This Los Magos brand is the best example of sotol David's tasted to date, and it dazzled Martin, too.

Rainer Schnaitmann was introduced to me in 1998 by a man greatly responsible for my entering the wine world, Helmut Doka, himself then a Stuttgart city councillor with a brief charging him to oversee his city's vineyards. He met and was impressed by the first vintage made by the then new vintner who was one of handful of dynamic young Germans turning its wines' stodgy stylings into those with far better results. Schnaitmann's wines have gone from strength to strength enjoying exemplary critical comments and widespread distribution.

With his books essential reading for anyone wishing a full account of the breadth and depth of wine's past and present, Johnson's unanticipated presence played a significant role throughout David's career when first cutting his teeth in Chicago, then bumping into him at Bordeaux's Vinexpo for an impromptu published interview, later serving to him as a San Francisco somm, and finally serving with him at the UK's Circle of Wine Writers. Planted worldwide, Sauvignon Blanc is a noble variety though too often made, and therefore recognized, as less than. These three northern hemisphere owner/winemakers are amongst a handful who keenly understand this vibrant white grape so as to coax from it the best their terroirs can offer. France's Loire, Styria shared by Austria and Slovenia, and California's Napa Valley have few peers for fashioning benchmark expressions from an often underachieving grape. This is driven deep by tasting immaculate bottlings from the Tement family dating to 2015 and 2019.

The fame of Vermouth di Torino PGI is linked to Piedmont producers and Turin when, in the 1800s, it was home to the aristocracy of vermouth makers who achieved international standing.

Vermouth di Torino is classified according to the color (White, Amber, Rosé, Red) and the amount of sugar used in its preparation, classified as extra dry for products containing less than 30 grams of sugar per liter, dry for vermouth with less than 50 grams per liter, and sweet for those with a sugar content of 130 grams or more per liter. This extends to the assignation Vermouth Superiore referring to products with an alcoholic strength of not less than 17% vol., made with at least 50% of Piedmontese wines and flavored with herbs other than wormwood cultivated or harvested in Piedmont.
