Mastering the Art of Collaboration: Harvard Career Expert Claims its the No. 1 Desirable Skill That Very Few People Have — Especially Men
Season 3 · Episode 55
lundi 19 juin 2023 • Duration 04:44
Dream Job Ready Podcast - Episode 55 - Mastering the Art of Collaboration: Harvard Career Expert Claims its the No. 1 Desirable Skill That Very Few People Have — Especially Men
In this episode, we recite Heidi K. Gardner's thought-provoking article, "Harvard career expert: The No. 1 ‘desirable skill’ that very few people have—especially men."
Have you ever thought about the profound impact of collaboration on professional growth and why it's a highly sought-after skill in the modern workplace?
"When young people ask me for career advice, I always tell them: “Don’t just focus on your own accomplishments. Be a collaborator. Through a decade of teaching and research at Harvard’s business and law schools, I discovered an important an often overlooked insight: People who figured out how to collaborate across teams gained a major competitive edge over those who did not." - Heidi K. Gardner, Ph.D.
Her article (and subsequentially this podcast) explores both the advantages of collaboration skills, and how to be an exceptional collaborator.

3 reasons why my new job is my dream job with Dane Sharp & Josh Wilson | Dream Job Ready EP46
Season 2 · Episode 46
lundi 29 mars 2021 • Duration 20:44
Hi, I'm Dane Sharp - host of Dream Job Ready. I'm also an excited, new starter this week, announcing I've landed a new dream job as Chief Marketing Officer at tech startup, togetherAI.
I've been fortunate to work for some amazing companies (Rip Curl, Under Armour, eBay, McDonald's) and awesome people in my career, but this new endeavour is one worth sharing and celebrating.
Unfortunately, youth mental health is deteriorating as children are “on device” at increasingly younger ages with an alarming correlation in increased rates of anxiety, depression, cyber-predatory and cyber-bullying. 1 in 5 young people will be socially excluded, threatened or abused online this year. 1 in 4 are at clinical risk of serious mental illness but the majority are reluctant to seek help.
Families often lack the awareness, knowledge and communication skills necessary to navigate complex scenarios and build resilient mental health and wellbeing on the journey to adulthood. Over 70% of parents feel that they struggle to communicate with their children.
As a new parent, these stats and the realities at large about family mental health shocked me. When I learned of togetherAI's focus and mission, I couldn't help but want to be a part of its future.
I've known togetherAI Founder and CEO, Josh Wilson, for more than 6 years, working together briefly when he was starting his first business venture, StatEdge. Today, I'm happy to be working with him and a team of passionate peers to bring togetherAI to life.
I invited Josh on to the show for this episode and asked him to prepare 3 reasons why his new job is a dream job. The three?
- Impact
- Alignment
- Team & People
We discuss each in the episode.

Business owner, C7 quadriplegic, author and one heck of an inspiration - Darren Longbottom chats with Dane Sharp about life and leadership in a wheelchair | Dream Job Ready EP45
Season 2 · Episode 45
mardi 23 mars 2021 • Duration 43:46
Business owner, C7 quadriplegic, author and one heck of an inspiration - Darren Longbottom (Owner of Zink Surf) chats with Dane Sharp about life and leadership in a wheelchair | Dream Job Ready EP45
Ready to be inspired, shocked, moved and motivated in one short interview?
Darren 'Daz' Longbottom was born into the surfing industry. Growing up on the beach in Cronulla, Australia, he and his brother witnessed surf industry and business success first hand via their father, who was a surfboard manufacturing pioneer in the 70s and 80s. Coming of working age, it didn’t take Daz long to forge his own identity in the surf industry and business world, eventually becoming the owner of a surf shop in Kiama on NSW's south coast.
The business was successful and enabled Daz to live a happy, easy-going and casual life, but all that was rocked in a split second by a freak surfing accident in the remote region of Mentawais, North Sumatra.
The freak surfing accident broke Darren's neck and resulted in instant paralysis. Alone in the water and semi-unconscious, Daz fought to stay alive until he was rescued by his friends, returned to the boat and stabilized (by getting strapped to a surfboard). But that’s just the beginning... What follows is a 25+ hour ordeal (I stress the world ordeal) returning to the mainland and reaching the safety of a hospital... You're likely trying to guess or imagine what went wrong and what happened... Think worse and times it by x 2...
Today, Daz still runs his successful surf store in Kiama, but now does it from a wheelchair because of his C7 quadriplegia and spinal cord injury. His co-authored book Beyond the Break explains his unbelievable, life-or-death escape to safety in impeccable detail and reading the book inspired me to interview Darren for Dream Job Ready. For it's not simply the inspiration, motivation or advice on mindset he shares, but the importance, reliance, and motivation he put on work, his job, and on his company, even in the hardest times of his recovery.
Dane visited Darren at his home on the South Coast of NSW for the interview (Covid-19 safe) and we had a small sound issue with my microphone. No biggie, you'll make out and understand everything I say, but I'm just calling out that the audio is not as crystal as it normally is or as Darren's microphone audio is, which is perfect.

How and why to get a dream job in Voice Tech with Jen Heape | Dream Job Ready EP44
Season 2 · Episode 44
lundi 15 mars 2021 • Duration 36:58
Dream Job Ready with Dane Sharp and Jen Heape (Co-founder and COO, Vixen Labs) | Dream Job Ready EP44.
Hello and thank you for discovering Dream Job Ready! Season 2 is here with a bang and we kick off the new series by interviewing Voice Tech expert, Jen Heape, in Episode 44.
Jen is COO and co-founder of Vixen Labs - UK's leading voice consultancy and design studio.
Smart Speakers, Voice Assistants and voice-centric apps (think Clubhouse) are radically changing the way we interact with technology at home, at work, and in the classroom. It's an exciting industry and one that's going to dominate the next decade.
With expertise in linguistics and over a decade of experience leading creative teams, Jen heads up the voice product output of Vixen Labs. She brings intellectual and creative rigor to voice design and is passionate about how conversational technologies can affect real change in our lives, right now. With a particular interest in the psychology behind voice-based interactions, she seeks to push at the technological constraints of today to create bold new applications.
Jen’s specialism lies in the pioneering field of voice strategy and voice user experience (VUX), covering all areas of conversational experience design, such as use case definition, user journey mapping, interaction design, character development, and tone of voice creation.
She regularly speaks internationally on all things voice, especially around ethics and biases in conversational technologies, as well as deep dives on the innovative principles of voice design.
I first met Jen back in 2009, when she freelanced with me and Rip Curl during a Rip Curl surfing event in Portugal. Jen helped me with content creation and website articles pre, during, and post-event, and I'm super proud of the career she's gone on to create.
If you're looking for a new dream job or exploring new industries to call home, hit play and learn some more about Voice Tech and the opportunities that exist.
On top of discussing all things voice, Jen and Dane share advice about what to do and what not to do during interviews, why networking is essential and where to invest energy in your job search.

Movember's Marketing Director, Jason Olive and Dane Sharp discuss what it's like to work for a non-profit organisation and charity. | Dream Job Ready EP43
Season 1 · Episode 43
jeudi 17 décembre 2020 • Duration 31:46
Dream Job Ready with Dane Sharp and Jason Olive (Marketing Director, Movember) | Dream Job Ready EP43.
2020 has been one for the history books, but it's been a pivotal and important year for non-profit organisation and charity, Movember.
Our mental health has been pressure-tested even more than usual, with Covid-19 disrupting and impacting life as we know it.
Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
Across the world, men are dying six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Movember's mission (by 2030) is to see the number of men dying prematurely reduce by 25%. Lofty goal, but so critical.
Since the first moustaches were grown in 2003, Movember has raised over AUD $1 billion for men’s health, funding more than 1,250 innovative programs ranging from groundbreaking clinical tests and trials to game-changing mental health studies and programs.
Jason Olive is Movember's Marketing Director and has a dream job with the organisation. After building a healthy career working in advertising agencies, he jumped to the non-profit in July 2019 and hasn't looked back. Awarded CMO 50's 'One to Watch' in 2020, Jason is proud of the work his team and the organisation at large has done this year, but knows its the diverse community of supporters that need the praise.
If your dream job is working for a charity, this episode is a must listen. Jason shares great advice about how to find the right organisation and cause for you and gives a rundown of what responsibilities his role has. I also asked Jason about the impacts that Coronavirus has had to mental health this year and what trends Movember has seen. We discuss the impacts (positive and negative) of working from home, the readjustments we'll need to make again in the new year and about work-place mental health in general.
If you're going through a tough time or know someone who is, remember you're not alone and there is help available.
Keep a lookout for your friends, family and co-workers. If it’s your mate, dad, brother, partner who is struggling, these conversations can be tough. To build your confidence, check out Movember Conversations, a free online ‘conversation simulation’ tool created by Movember and guided by an international team of mental health experts https://conversations.movember.com/.
For instant assistance, you can call Lifeline 24 hours a day and have a chat with someone. The phone number is 13 11 14.
If you're not in Australia, please lookup a similar organisation in your area.
If you want to support Movember, and help them change the face of men’s health you can do so year-round at: https://au.movember.com/donate.

The importance of culture and values to business success, and the challenge leaders have to keep culture alive, with Dane Sharp and Fred Schebesta | Dream Job Ready Quick Take EP42
Season 1 · Episode 42
jeudi 10 décembre 2020 • Duration 04:56
"Culture does not make people. People make culture." Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Dream Job Ready Quick Take episode with Dane Sharp and Fred Schebesta
The importance of culture and values to business success, and the challenge leaders have to keep culture alive, with Dane Sharp and Fred Schebesta | Dream Job Ready Quick Take EP42.
G'day! My name is Dane Sharp and I really implore you to hit play on this 4.56min Quick Take episode.
This episode features a memorable grab that serial entrepreneur Fred Schebesta shared in my interview with him in Episode 27.
Fred is a co-founder of finder.com and helped create the company's strong and passionate team culture. Throughout our interview in EP27, Fred talks to finder.com's culture and the reasons it's been so important to successful company growth… He claims it's one of the most important things - and often a point of difference, just how much emphasis and importance he and the other business leaders at Finder put on culture and the company’s values.
Finder.com is a company that has grown quickly and has opportunities galore in front of it…. It’s grown from Australia to now operate in 6 countries, and given his strong views on Culture and Values, I made sure I asked Fred if (and how) he has managed and maintained that during growth… and whether it’s been easy to do. In this Quick Take episode he shares some great advice and insights about cultural differences and continuing to learn on the job too…
I hope you found this Quick Take episode interesting and helpful.

How to manage people & big, diverse teams plus what makes employees successful | Dream Job Ready Quick Take EP41
Season 1 · Episode 41
mercredi 25 novembre 2020 • Duration 07:37
Dream Job Ready Quick Take episode with Dane Sharp and Danny Keens.
How to manage people & big, diverse teams + plus what makes employees successful | Dream Job Ready Quick Take EP41.
Hello! My name is Dane Sharp, I’m your show host and I wanted to re-share a great snippet of advice that Danny Keens shared in Episode 26.
Danny has a storied career and has had dream jobs with the likes of Twitter, ESPN, Channel 9 and most recently Next VR, which was virtual reality company bought out by Apple in 2020.
Danny has held multiple senior level roles, so I asked him in that interview about how he approaches managing people and developing and leading big and diverse teams… And also asked for his thoughts, as a boss, on what makes an employee great, successful and trust-worthy….
I loved the following quote (which Danny shares in this episode):
"Hiring is hard.. finding a good person for a job is tough, but finding a great person is almost impossible."
That’s an important opinion to consider… If you’re applying for a job or fronting up at an interview, do your prep work, be present and put your best foot forward and on show.
I hope you found this Quick Take episode interesting and helpful.

Part 6 of 6 in Mastering the Sales Process & Learning how to Sell with Noah Cohen | EP39
Season 1 · Episode 39
mercredi 11 novembre 2020 • Duration 24:31
Dream Job Ready Episode 39: Noah Cohen (Professional Sales Coach, Cohen Sales Academy).
Part 6 of 6 in our 'Mastering the Sales Process & Learning how to Sell with Noah Cohen' mini series.
Topic for this episode: Noah rounds off his training by taking host Dane Sharp through 'Presentation & Closing', 'Post Sell' and 'Asking for Referrals'.
Hello and thanks for joining me on Dream Job Ready. I'm your host, Dane Sharp, and I'm excited to bring you the finale of a special 6-part mini-series with professional sales coach, Noah Cohen, where we dive into and break down the sales process.
We've received some amazing feedback about the previous 5 episodes with Noah, so if you're just discovering this show or missed episodes 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38, please go back and give them a listen.
Noah has turned his sales training into a condensed and generalised take for our listening benefit. He's also provided some scripts, tip and communication templates here:
Topic: Presentation & Close.
Tip for Episode: At any point before this stage, if you can not proceed further, you are not to pitch or present. You must address their enquiry or concern and solve it before moving forward to the next step.
"[Name], Earlier you told me X was important to you. You also say the steps you've taken to fix it and the impact it has had on you. Have I missed something?
(If positive) share how your solution fixes their issue or provides to them what they need and ask when you can get started and close.
Topic: Post-sell and referral.
Tip for Episode: Deal with buyers' remorse.
"[Name], you mentioned that you wanted x but then after discussing it you were happy with what I suggested, Are you still ok to proceed?" This will allow the prospect to own their decision and reduce the chances of a cancelled sale, later.
Tip for Episode: How to ask for a referral:
"[Name], next time you talk to a friend, college family member or even a neighbour and they mention they need (product or service), would you feel comfortable introducing us?"
Yes, sure...
"Great, when that happens please take out your phone and text me their name and number, and I will get in touch. Is that ok?"
No...
"Not a problem at all [name], what do I need to do for you to feel comfortable?"
Here's the agenda for our six episodes:
- Introducing the Sales Process & Training (EP34)
- Rapport & Trust (EP35)
- Setting an Agenda (EP36)
- Discovery Funnel, Needs Analysis & Questioning (EP37)
- Uncovering a Prospect's Budget & Understanding their Decision Making Process (EP38)
- Closing the Sale / Getting a Decision / After the Sale (this one!)
Noah offers free online sales training on his website www.cohentraininginstitute.com.au
I worked with Noah at Groupon and he's had experience training and coaching sales consultants across retail, finance, insurance and HR. Regardless of your role, you're going to benefit from the advice he shares.
