A Shark Encounter in The Bahamas12 Sep 202400:48:26

In 2018, while sailing in The Bahamas, I had a terrifying encounter with an oceanic whitetip shark, a known maneater, and one of the most feared sharks in the ocean. I described the encounter in my book Journey to the Ragged Islands. In this episode is a chapter in the audiobook, where I read from the book about my time at Cat Island. I encountered the shark while on a paddleboard at the north end of the island. In the following days, I sailed south to New Bight and hiked up Mt. Alvernia to the Hermitage of Father Jerome.

To Play the Game, 72 Days of Survival in the Andes11 Jul 202401:02:20

John Guiver is the author of the book "To Play the Game," the story of the aeronautical disaster of flight 571, which crashed in the Andes in 1972, and involved cannibalism in order to survive.

John Guiver's lifetime interest in the 1972 Andes Flight Disaster led him to travel to the site of the accident in January 2013 in the company of one of the sixteen survivors, Eduardo Strauch. Through him, he met many others connected to the story, including survivors Pedro Algorta and Coche Inciarte, whose memoirs he translated. Over the years, he conducted numerous interviews within the close-knit passenger community, and delved deeply into various archives, including that of Piers Paul Read who wrote the best-selling 1974 account of the tragedy, Alive. The detailed information he amassed persuaded him to write a comprehensive history of this iconic event. "To Play the Game" retells the story both on and off the mountain, giving an in-depth look at the world from which the passengers came, and an analysis of the possible causes of the accident. The account is enriched by the stories of those who didn’t return from the mountain, related through the eyes of their families, bringing much-needed balance to a history which has largely focused on the survivors.

Ryan DeLena, a Troubled Childhood Saved By Adventure11 Apr 202400:59:54

As a child, Ryan had difficulty controlling his emotions and was placed in therapeutic schools that relied on detrimental methods of behavior modification such as physical restraint. His parents Rob and Mary Beth were counseled to place me in a group home. They refused.

By his second day of skiing, Ryan was executing advanced runs, and with each conquest in the winters that followed, his father began to question the path laid by the professionals paid to judge Ryan. He later convinced Ryan's mother to fight the medical and educational complexes over Ryan's care and school placement, and together they fostered the freedom Ryan needed to pursue his dream of becoming a professional ski mountaineer.

We talk about out-of-bounds skiing in Vermont, becoming an outdoor adventure guide, learning to ski, skiing in Antarctica, how skiing changed his life, theraputic schools with restraints, prescription drugs, the book he and his father wrote "Without Restraint," skiing in Big Sky, avoiding drugs and alcohol, breaking the law in search of adventure, and healthy outlets for the same, finding contentment, fear, bucket-list adventure destinations, and more.

Befriending Sharks with Jim Abernethy28 Dec 202301:43:25

For nearly four decades, Jim Abernethy has been running large predatory sharks & large aquatic wildlife expeditions with nature lovers, film crews and professional photographers, while respectfully not interfering with the wildlife. I interviewd him in 2020 in order to learn more about sharks, particularly how we should behave around them, how to be safe while in the water with them, and how to interpret their behavior in order to arm myself with information and combat my fear of sharks. The interview achieved all my goals. When I went to the Bahamas soon after, I encountered a large hamerhead shark, and instead of being terrified, it was a fantastic wildlife encounter. Hopefully the interview will have the same effect on you.
