Gabriel Urbina: Hi everyone. Series creator Gabriel Urbina here. Dracula: The Danse Macabre releases every two weeks, and this is one of the weeks when we... don't have a new episode out for you all. I'm sorry! But - but - but... I do have something to make it up to you. During these off weeks, I want to share with all of you episodes of other fiction podcasts that I love, and which I think you'll love as well. Think of it as... companion pieces to Dracula. If you've liked what you've heard of our show so far, you'll probably like these shows and should check them out.
Gabriel Urbina: The first podcast that I want to highlight here is The Case of the Greater Gatsby, by the fine folks over at Shipwrecked Comedy. It is a hilarious take on the conventions of film noir, as we follow the adventures of taciturn private eye Ford Phillips and his fast-talking partner Fig Wineshine. The two of them have to delve into the muck of 1940's Hollywood as they try to solve the murder of acclaimed novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Gabriel Urbina: Now, just from that description, you can probably already tell why I love this show. It's fast, it's snappy, it's got great dialogue, and it blends the lines between a literary adaptation and historical fiction in all of these really smart, creative ways. But I don't think anything I could say here would properly convey just how charming the characters are, how genuinely gripping the mystery plotline in the show is, and just how many fun, clever things they do with the audio format. So, instead of trying and failing, I want to just play for you the first episode of The Case of the Greater Gatsby. How does that sound? Good? All right, I thought so too. I am going to leave you now in the capable hands of Fig and Ford, as they take you away to 1940's LA.

I'm back in the feed because... while the count and Mina may have the week off, that doesn't mean that all of you don't need excellent audio fiction content to listen to while they get ready for Episode 3. So I'm here to tell you about another show that I love, and which - if you're enjoying our take on Dracula so far? - you should definitely check out.
Gabriel Urbina: This week, I want to tell you all about Victoriocity, the steam-punk comedy mystery detective thriller from Chris and Jen Sugden. Starring the amazing duo of Tom Crowley and Layla Katib as sardonic Inspector Archibald Fleet and intrepid reporter Clara Entwhistle, the series follows their adventures in the Even Greater London of 1887. Ruled over by the mechanized Queen Victoria, Even Greater London is a place of amazing inventions, dark villainy, and high adventure.
Gabriel Urbina: Victoriocity is one of those shows where.. you don't just listen to it, it kind of becomes your whole personality for a while after you first encounter it. The performances are pitch perfect, the writing is sparkling, the whole thing just brims with affection for the literature and storytelling tropes of the Victorian era, and it is, I cannot underline this enough, one of the funniest podcasts out there. And there's no time like the present to get obsessed with Victoriocity, since their first tie-in novel, High Vaultage, just came out. So for anyone that's been looking for a... Terry Pratchett-esquie steampunk adventure... well, tell you what, I'm going to do you a favor right now and play the first episode of Victoriocity for you.

Evangeline has spent years working on this record, and it's just a final big push of work away from being done. Hello! My name is Evangeline Young, I’m a singer-songwriter and actor living in Brooklyn, NY. It’s with a lotta joy and gratitude and knee slappin’ happiness that I’m announcing…I made a record! It Wasn’t All That Bad is my first full length solo record–I began recording it in 2020, and finished earlier this year. This album has been a long time coming. I’m so excited to finally be able to share these songs and the incredible work of the talented folks who made it with me.
I’ve been singing and playing guitar since I was a kid, and started writing songs a little later into my teens. It felt like a superpower to me—taking an experience or a feeling and shaping it into a lyric or a melody. Since moving to NYC in 2017, I’ve played solo as well as collaborated with many of the incredible musicians in the music community here. It’s in those rooms with those people that these songs grew–and me right along with them. In a time of so much fear and isolation, a community of people coming together to sing, to express themselves and to hear each other is a deeply healing thing. It’s a gift to be a part of, and to contribute to.
The songs on It Wasn’t All That Bad (with the exception of the song “Home” written by my brilliant brother Noah Young) were all written over the course of a few years in my early 20s. I was learning a lot of weird, good, hard lessons (ain’t that just the way of the early 20s) and doing a LOT of growing, both as a songwriter and as a person. It’s a record about the hazards and great beauty of open heartedness. It’s about moving through hard things with people you love and walking out on the other side to a new view–one with a little more breathing room, some boundaries, and a perspective you couldn’t have found any other way. A view that allows you to look back on all those experiences and go “MAN. That was really hard, and I didn’t know, but now I know a little more and…it wasn’t all that bad.” Writing these songs gave those experiences a place to go. They’ve served as reminders for me. All I could hope for in sharing them is that they can be places to go and reminders for you, too.
