Olly Alexander Will Represent the UK at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden16 Dec 202300:03:44

It's official! Olly Alexander, lead singer of Years & Years turned solo artist, has confirmed he is representing the UK at next year's Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden.

In a statement, Olly said:

‘I’ve loved watching Eurovision ever since I was a little kid and I’m beyond excited to be taking part next year. As a young boy I always looked forward to this incredible event of unbridled joy, the wonderfully chaotic mix of musical styles, theatrical performances, heartfelt emotion and humour. I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible, it shall be an honour!

I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and it feels like the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!’

Naturally, we couldn't let this news slip past us, so Steven jumped on the mic for an emergency reaction episode. Here's what he has to say about it...

From Lordi to Loreen, the last 23 years of Eurovision have given us winners from all corners of the music world, and in this episode Steven takes a look at all of them.

In a more subjective episode than normal, he gives his personal ranking of every Eurovision winner this century, so the real question is... do you agree?

Where Are We Now?12 Aug 202400:10:58

Hello Europe (and Australia)... we are back!

Ok, it's been a tough season, and the Douze Points team have been doing some quiet reflection on the state of Eurovision and the future of the podcast. More on the latter very soon, but we do have some news regarding the former, including an official statement from the EBU following the 2024 controversies.

Plus, the current list of countries confirmed for Eurovision 2025 includes an unsurprising omission, and the BBC pull out of Junior Eurovision.

Also, is the UK bringing back the national selection process? The rumour mill is running wild!

The Rules of Eurovision: Part 2 (1990 - 2023)18 Sep 202300:15:40

Continuing our series on the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest, we pick where we left off in 1990 and carry you through the the most recent contest in 2023.

The 21st century was a time when audience and jury voting was the focus for many of the rule changes, with numerous iterations of counting votes and ranking countries.

The 2000s was also the birth of the semi-final, and the big four became the big five.

And don't get us started on the jury ranking weightings, but if you are interested here's a handy guide from Eurovision themselves explaining all the maths!

The Rules of Eurovision: Part I (1956 - 1989)10 Sep 202300:14:14

For every person who loves Eurovision and obsessively keeps up with the rule changes, there's 100 more people who remain confused, perplexed and baffled by the seemingly odd criteria around the song contest.

So where did these Eurovision rules come from?

Why is Italy to blame for the song length limit?

And is the Big 5 all Sweden's fault?

In this first of two parts, journalist and Eurovision superfan Steven Perkins looks at the early history of Eurovision to understand where some of today's seemingly inexplicable rules came from.

1956: The Very First Eurovision27 Aug 202300:09:51

Little is known about the first ever Eurovision Song Contest... until now.

I'm Steven Perkins, your Eurovision expert and host of Douze Points, and in this episode we continue our journey through the history books and go all the way back to where it started. In 1956 there were no Big 4, no voting results, and barely any televised record of the event, so what the heck was it all about, and who won?

Eurovision 2023 Recap21 May 202300:07:24

There have been highs, lows and everything in between, but Eurovision 2023 has now drawn to a close. In this episode, we take a more considered look at the results, what went wrong for Mae Muller and the UK, and the rise of Eurovision in the British music chats.

We also take a look ahead to next year as countries including Luxembourg (who have not competed in Eurovision since the 90s) make their long-awaited return, and several cities have already thrown their names in contention for hosting duties, as we all head to Sweden.

But for now, we're going to sign off on an amazing season with our UK heads held high, and look forward to returning with brand new episodes in July.

Eurovision 2023: Grand Final Reaction14 May 202300:26:41

It's the morning after the night before. We wish we could say the night was full of shocks and surprises, but this was arguably one of the more predictable Eurovision Song Contests in recent years. Finland's late surge with the televote wasn't quite enough to stop Loreen romping away with her second win, and Sweden's seventh overall, to make them the joint most successful country of all time.

On this episode, host Steven and producer Liam chat about Sweden's win, the people's champion Finland, the United Kingdom returning to their usual place in the leaderboard despite a valiant effort from Mae Muller, and how the UK have raised the bar for Eurovision weeks ahead of Stockholm 2024.

Eurovision Week 2023: Semi-Final 2 Reaction11 May 202300:29:01

On this special episode of Douze Points, Steven is joined by his extended Bingewatch family, as Ian MacEwan and Hannah Fernando drop in to discuss all the highs and lows of Eurovision 2023's second semi-final.

It was an interesting night, as Australia compete for potentially the last time, Luke Evans performed some poetry (we think it was intentional), and we can all agree that Hannah Waddingham is our new national treasure.

What the evening lacked in competition favourites, it made up for in flair and enthusiasm, and boy is there a lot to cover! From Estonia to Edgar Allen Poe, and Austria (Steve's favourite) to a 'what the hell were they thinking' performance from... well, you'll have to listen and find out!

On this episode of Douze Points we're taking a look back at 1998, the last year the United Kingdom were on hosting duties following Katrina and the Waves' resounding win the previous year.

From Terry Wogan's dated hosting to Ukrika Jonsson's mishap with the Netherlands, it was a ceremony of many lasts (including the use of a live orchestra) as well as many firsts (such as the crazy results map), and also some moments that some people would much rather forget.
