As we dive into the mental side of doubles over the next several weeks, I wanted to share 3 mental myths that many doubles players believe. Join the newsletter for more mental lessons.
Once you stop believing these and reframe your mindset, you'll be a better doubles player.
Great players don't get nervous.
Losing a point is bad.
If you miss or get beat down the line, it's your fault you lost the point.
I'll explain how to think about each of these myths differently, so you play better under pressure, don't feel so bad when you miss, and play doubles the right way more often.
The Mental Game Masterclass will launch at the end of March.

Styrling Strother Interview: Transforming the Practice Court for Doubles
17 Jan 2024
01:34:21
Styrling Strother is an innovative tennis coach who trains junior players and adults to transform the way they practice and think about the match court. He is a Tennis Performance Trainer (TPT) with the International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA), a PTR Professional Coach, a best-selling author, and the founder of Styrling Strother Tennis, a player development program located in Cary, North Carolina.
This episode will totally shift your practice habits, and inject fun into your doubles matches. Styrling shares some transformational ideas with me in this episode.
Why you should NOT look at the ball after you hit.
A new way to think about the game score that helps you maintain focus and concentration (Momentum Scoring System).
Innovative doubles drills that will better help you win matches.
What you should be thinking when you make an error.
Why opponent-based thinking is the #1 thing to learn for tennis players (and why it's so hard).
We also discuss his new book, The Art of Winning Tennis, which offers strategies that change the way you see the court. I'm about halfway done with the book and it's already got me thinking about adjustments for my next match.
As we dissect the traditional practice court paradigm, you'll discover why it's critical to move beyond technique to the strategic 'where, when, and why' of each shot. You'll learn to embrace the pressure of in-match scenarios through our in-depth analysis of scoring and drill modifications that mimic match conditions.

Ben Rothenberg Interview: Reforming Pro Doubles & His New Book on Naomi Osaka
05 Jan 2024
01:43:43
Ben Rothenberg is one of the most prolific and influential tennis journalists of the last several decades. He covered tennis for the New York Times for over 10 years, has contributed to The Racquet, and has been featured on BBC, CNN, and many other major news networks.
I wanted to have Ben on to talk doubles and discuss his new book, Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power & Her Voice. I recently listened to Ben on Craig Shapiro’s podcast where he said he thinks “doubles is in a position that’s not sustainable.”
In this conversation, we discuss:
The problems facing the doubles tour including the lack of star power, poor marketing, small fan bases at many tournaments, and more.
What the ATP & WTA might do to help doubles.
What doubles players need to do to grow their fan base and help the sport.
Why the Bryan Brothers were so successful in “marketing” themselves and doubles.
Ben also has lots of great stories that he shares with me. I’d encourage tennis fans, anyone involved in professional tennis, and especially ATP and WTA doubles players to listen to this episode. Whether you agree with Ben or not, he has opinions worth listening to as someone who understands our sport so well.
In my opinion, many of the ideas should be taken into consideration by both the tours and the players, particularly as the rumors around Saudi Arabia enter the scene.

Jonathan Stokke is a former tennis player at Duke where he was an All-American in doubles. He played in the US Open twice and coached at Duke for several years after playing. He now resides in South Carolina where he coaches junior players and adults.
I wanted to have Jonathan on the podcast because of a lesson I saw him give at Tennis Con 7. He's one of those great coaches who is crystal clear with his instruction and makes his lessons actionable for those who watch. His Instagram account has over 87,000 followers and for good reason.
In this conversation, we discuss:
How to read your opponent's serve & adjust your return position accordingly.
The problem with your serve toss (including a drill to fix it).
What high percentage tennis actually means, and why most people don't understand this.
The mentality to have against lobbers, plus advice from Rajeev Ram
Jonathan also shares a story from college when he and a partner used three different plays to get the same result. They basically fooled their opponents into thinking they were using variety.

Rick Macci Interview: Serena & Venus Stories, Finding a Good Coach, Mental Strength, & More
22 Nov 2023
00:58:00
In this episode, I interview one of the greatest tennis coaches ever. Coach Rick Macci has coached tennis for over 40 years. He's helped five players reach world #1 including Serena and Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Jennifer Capriati. If his name sounds familiar, it may be because Rick was portrayed by Jon Bernthal in the movie "King Richard".
Rick shares several entertaining stories from when he coached these players, the type of mindset he encourages players to adopt, and stories from their junior days. One interesting part of the episode is his explanation for why he thinks playing doubles is especially helpful for younger professional players. He uses Coco Gauff as one example.
We also discuss:
How often the Williams sisters played doubles as juniors & 2 rules he made them follow.
What a club player should look for (and not look for) when searching for a coach.
How to develop confidence in strategies that you're uncomfortable with (like poaching!)
The mindset players need on the court against pushers or counter-punchers.
His favorite doubles drills.
You'll get a lot out of this episode in terms of strategy and mindset. Rick has a new book coming out called Billion Dollar Mind that we chat about as well. At the end, Rick talks about how he likes to use video to help club-level players improve. Something I'm a big advocate of and use all the time myself.

Doubles Game Styles: How to Counter Pushers, Attackers, & Baseliners
16 Nov 2023
00:21:28
In doubles, you'll often play against a team with one of three different game styles.
Pushers - they lob endlessly, never miss, and make you beat yourself.
Attackers - they serve and volley, get to the net, and apply relentless pressure.
Baseliners - they play straight-up doubles, usually 1-up 1-back, with really good groundstrokes that force errors and make you afraid to poach.
In this episode, I cover how to beat each of these types of teams, including recent examples where I saw it work. I'll share the best formation to use against pushers, how to give baseliners zero rhythm, and one vital thing you need to look for against teams who attack.

This is a conversation with Demi Schuurs from the WTA Finals in Cancun. Demi partnered with Desirae Krawczyk and I spoke with her between her first and second matches.
We discussed how she spent her days off in Cancun, including her gym routine. I asked her how she's had so much doubles success with different partners. This is her 5th consecutive WTA Finals with four different partners. Demi made a surprise appearance in the singles draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara and she tells us the story of how that happened.
Towards the end, we talk about their first match where they lost 9/9 deciding points. She tells me what "playing more aggressively" means to her and analyzes previous matchups against the teams in their group. She actually keeps a notebook that she writes in after each match. A great tip for other doubles players.

In this conversation, we discuss the match, the game plan, and a specific phrase Dan told the players when up a set and 3-1... "start again". I asked him what that meant.
Some of my favorite interviews are with coaches because they have a way of articulating what happens on the court so that we can use it in our own matches better than most players. Dan is one of those coaches. His answers are thoughtful, complex, and applicable to your own doubles game and life.
Enjoy!

Elise Mertens & Storm Hunter: Round 2 Interview at the WTA Finals
04 Nov 2023
00:07:47
This is another interview with Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter from the WTA Finals. This time I spoke with the 2nd seeds after their second match victory over Melichar-Martinez and Perez. They won the match 7-5 6-4 over a two-day period and numerous rain delays.
We discussed how they handled the delays, as well as a tactic I noticed their opponents using on 2nd serves and how they handled that. I also asked them about playing in the windy conditions, especially Elise who likes to use the lob often. I found her response surprising.
At the end, they talked about how they spent their time after the delay and the morning before they restarted the match at 2-0 in the second set.

Vera Zvonareva & Laura Siegemund: Round 1 Interview at the WTA Finals
02 Nov 2023
00:12:38
This is another interview from the WTA Finals and it's a great one. We chatted with 2020 US Open Champions, Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegmund, after their 3-set victory over Krejcikova and Siniakova.
We discussed the rollercoaster of a match where they lost a two-break-lead in the 2nd set as well as two match points in the tiebreaker. I asked how they were able to stay focused after the momentum changed.
Laura is one of the most aggressive net players in the game with next-level instincts (super fun to watch). She shares how she adjusts when she does get beat down the line, which happened several times during the match. I loved her answer to this.
Vera also talks about how the doubles game has changed, and they both give their input on what needs to happen to grow doubles.

Elise Mertens & Storm Hunter: Round 1 Interview at the WTA Finals
02 Nov 2023
00:09:14
Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter are the #2 seeds at this year's WTA Finals in Cancun. This is a short conversation with them after their 1st round match where they defeated Aoyama & Shibahara 6-4 6-2.
We discussed how they took momentum after going down an early break in the first set. Then I asked them how they game plan against a player like Shuko Aoyama who takes away the net. Elise also shares where she gets her ridiculously effective lob. I really liked her answer here. They talk a bit about having a lefty-righty combo, and Storm answers some questions about her plans for 2024 as she tries to balance a singles and doubles career.

Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara are the #3 seeds at this year's WTA Finals in Cancun. This is a short conversation with them after their 1st round match where they defeated Krawczyk & Schuurs 7-5 6-2, winning 9 of 9 deciding points.

Matthew Futterman Interview: On Doubles Popularity, Tennis' Struggle in the US, & Possible Solutions
27 Oct 2023
00:52:46
Matthew Futterman (@MattFutterman) is an award-winning tennis journalist who has worked for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and now, The Athletic. He has authored two books and is working on a third, about tennis, called "The Cruelest Game".
This episode is a little different. You're not going to get doubles strategy out of this one, but you will get some deep insights into the world of pro tennis, why it isn't as popular in the US, and why doubles, specifically, has struggled.
Matt has covered our sport for the better part of the last two decades interviewing singles stars like Novak Djokovic, doubles specialists like Austin Krajicek, and more. We discuss ideas on how tennis might change the format of doubles to make it more appealing. He also explains why Novak Djokovic is such a fascinating player and person.
Matt shares three stories of his that you should read:

2nd Serve Strategy: For Weak, Medium, & Strong Serves
25 Oct 2023
00:24:25
2nd serve points only account for about 35% of points in doubles, but it's crucial to have a good 2nd serve strategy. Your goal should be to win 50% or more of your 2nd serve points.
In this episode, I share some ideas on improving your 2nd serve strategy for doubles players with strong, medium, and... WEAK 2nd serves.
When should you use formations on 2nd serves?
Is it okay to poach or fake on a 2nd serve?
What should you do if your partner has a weak 2nd serve and the opponent is crushing it at you?
You'll learn tactics and game plans for handling all those situations and more.

5 Underrated Things to Practice for Club Doubles Players
18 Oct 2023
00:21:54
I've recently been training a few USTA doubles teams, helping them prepare for nationals. In this episode, I'll share five things I told them to practice that are neglected by club-level doubles players & teams.
Practicing these skills will help you make the other team play bad because most doubles teams you'll face won't be used to seeing this stuff.
I'll cover a specific return that you probably use but never practice.

Communication & Teamwork with Your Doubles Partner: Before, During, & After the Match
11 Oct 2023
00:27:24
Communication and teamwork in doubles aren't easy to teach or measure. That's why I think I've neglected the subject a bit over the years. But over and over, the world's best players, like recent podcast guests and US Open Champions, Rajeev Ram & Erin Routliffe, continue to stress the importance of working together with their partner, communicating effectively, and building trust.
This episode covers what I think you should be communicating with your partner before, during, and after your matches, including what to do during tiebreakers and pressure moments. Following this advice should help you better strategize and communicate with your doubles partner.

I spoke with ATP & WTA Coach, Dan Kiernan, in Cincinnati about life as a professional coach, doubles drills, practice sets, and more. This episode will help you rethink how you practice.
Dan works with multiple players on different teams, not uncommon for doubles coaches, so you'll get insights into what his day-to-day responsibilities look like.
Dan's daily schedule can involve up to 7-8 hours of court time, plus meetings, court bookings, academy management (Soto Tennis Academy), podcasts, and more
How practice courts are reserved at tournaments
Practice drills focus on offensive and defensive positioning rather than neutral play
The "overhead drill" helps players master both offensive overheads and defensive lobs
The amount of practice time dedicated to serving and returning will be jaw-dropping for club players to hear
Practice sets serve different purposes depending on team needs and tournament context
I love the topic of game development and practicing with a purpose, and I'm always learning from coaches like Dan. Dabrowski and Routliffe are in the semifinals in Cincinnati, which you can watch on Tennis Channel Plus.

I recently played in USTA 9.0 Mixed Doubles Sectionals in Abilene, TX. This episode covers 3 lessons learned from my time there with our team. We didn't have a great performance but you can always learn from your losses.
I discuss choosing return sides and playing with strengths in the middle of the court with an example from one of our 4.5/4.5 teams who hadn't played together before. You'll also learn how to adjust your return position based on several factors, plus why I used Australian formation in the deuce court (and why I think I over-used it!).

27 Sep 2023
00:37:16
2023 US Open men's doubles champion, Rajeev Ram joins the show for the second time. Rajeev shares his experience winning his third consecutive US Open alongside partner, Joe Salisbury.
I asked Rajeev about the 2023 season which has been a bit of a rollercoaster for him and Joe. One of my favorite parts of this episode is when Rajeev explains how his communication with Joe has improved and how he worked on that when he transitioned from singles to doubles earlier in his career.
We also discuss his relationship with coach Chris Eaton, Davis Cup, 2024 Olympic plans, and more. Towards the end, Rajeev shares advice for turning matches around, playing well in 10-point tiebreakers, and answers your questions from Instagram.

Daniel Nestor is one of the best doubles players ever. He has eight men's doubles grand slams, four mixed doubles major titles, an Olympic Gold Medal, and won the Tour Finals four times.
Daniel recently built an online course for club players that we discuss in this episode, along with his incredibly successful career. I also ask him what made the Bryan Brothers so tough, who he had a 29-30 record against... not bad 😉
After that, we discuss several technical, strategic, and mental doubles topics from his new course, Mastering Doubles with Daniel Nestor(use coupon tennistribe15).
How to serve & volley, a common half-volley mistake that I'm trying to fix on my backhand side
Why serve placement is more important than power
The mentality the server's partner should have that most club-level players unfortunately don't...
When to return down the line
Why it's so important to write things down (get a notebook!)
At the end, Daniel shares his favorite tournament, tennis book, and what needs to happen to make doubles more popular.

This is the 8th and final episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.
On every shot in doubles, you can choose which direction you want to hit the ball. But how do you know you're choosing the right direction?
Many club-level doubles players go down the line when they should go crosscourt, never change their serve location, or don't think about the best target for approach shots.
In this episode, I'll cover how to use direction to improve your doubles strategy for serving, returning, rallying, and net play. I'll share common mistakes I see, drills you can practice, and the ideal direction to hit the ball in different situations.

Gigi won 17 major doubles titles on the professional tour and two Olympic Gold Medals. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010. Today, she specializes in teaching club and recreational adult doubles players.
This is a really rare opportunity where you get someone from the pro-level teaching at a recreational level or club level. In this conversation, you’ll learn about Gigi’s pro career and tons of doubles strategy. Gigi discusses the Gigi method, which has five different parts to it (below). She covers serve and return strategy, net play, how to defend against the lob, and the biggest mistakes she sees from club-level doubles players.

In doubles, choosing the correct return side is one of the most important decisions you'll make with your partner before each match. It's also one of the most misunderstood topics by club-level doubles players.
In this episode, I'll cover how to think about choosing return sides and share a recent example where I moved my partner to the ad side even though they preferred their forehand.
There are two BIG myths that you might be using when it comes to choosing return sides that I'll dispel as well.

Doubles Team Chemistry with Jorge Capestany (Rebroadcast)
09 Aug 2023
01:39:51
This is a rebroadcast of my interview with Jorge Capestany from September 2021.
How well do you know your doubles partner?
In this episode, I speak with Jorge Capestany in great depth about this question. Jorge is one of the top tennis coaches in the US and one of only ten people in the world who are Master Professionals for the USPTA and PTR. He’s coached tennis for decades and thinks that understanding your partner might be the most important factor in winning matches for adult tennis players.
We cover 20 questions that you should know about your doubles partner, what your “traffic patterns” should be in between points, and a lot of doubles strategy. Jorge is also well-known for his tennis drills, so we discuss his favorite doubles drills and games as well.
This episode is a little different because I’ve never talked about team chemistry this much before, but it was eye-opening for me and will be for you too.

2 Doubles Tactics from My New Course (plus a bonus)
02 Aug 2023
00:20:24
Today, I'm launching my new doubles course, 25 Winning Doubles Tactics. So in this episode, I wanted to share 3 tactics that I use in my own doubles matches and teach to club players like you.
The first two tactics are from the course where you can see real examples of each tactic being executed. They are called the Shoe Shine and the Sneaky Lob.
The last one is from a recent 9.0 mixed doubles match where my partner and I made what turned out to be a fantastic adjustment to come back after dropping the first set 7-6(4).
Knowing how to execute these tactics is great but recognizing when to use them is just as important.

Demi Schuurs Interview: Her Tennis Story & Doubles Success
27 Jul 2023
00:43:09
This is an interview with WTA doubles player, Demi Schuurs. Demi has a career-high ranking of #7 in the world, including 17 doubles titles on tour.
Demi is also a top returner and net player, making her one of my favorite players to watch. She has a very old-school doubles game, constantly moving forward and taking away time from her opponents.
In this conversation, we discuss her story – she grew up in the Netherlands, how to play with different doubles partners, including her current one, Desirae Krawczyk, and strategy.
You’ll learn:
Demi’s approach to the return & volley (she’s one of the best at this tactic).
Different tactics for returning against I-formation.
How to develop quick reactions & volleys at the net, including several drills she recommends.
Why she sometimes stands way out wide, behind the doubles alley, to serve.
Demi also shares some potential plans and goals for after her pro tennis career. This is a fun interview because you get a little bit of everything from Demi including personal stories, life as a pro doubles player, and tactics & strategy.

Rob Morgan Interview: Winning Wimbledon, Better Doubles Communication, Volley Drills, & More
19 Jul 2023
01:08:45
This is an interview with ATP tennis coach, Rob Morgan. Rob has coached tennis for over two decades and currently coaches world #1 doubles player Wesley Koolhof, who just won Wimbledon alongside Neal Skupski.
I ask Rob about his role on their team and what it took to win Wimbledon. Wesley and Neal have been the best team in the world for over a year but hadn't won a Grand Slam until last week. You'll find out what they improved this year to get over the hump and win their first major title.
We also discuss:
The one thing Rob has all his players do when he first starts coaching them (something he says he's never shared)
How to beat a team that lobs or pushes for club-level players
The most neglected shot for club doubles players
3 questions you should ask a new doubles partner
Rob seems to prioritize communication in doubles, and I didn't realize how deep communication could go on and off the court until this conversation. We discuss the ways doubles partners can better understand and help each other out before, during, and after matches. This episode provides a great window into coaching at the top level of our sport but also provides useful info that can help your doubles game.

Depth is more important than most people realize. But it's not always best to hit the ball deep. When should we focus on depth? And when is it okay to hit the ball short?
In this episode, I cover how the depth of your shots relates to serving, returning, rallying, and net play in doubles. You'll learn:
My favorite drill to improve your 2nd serve
The best times to NOT hit the ball deep
Why return depth is MORE IMPORTANT than pace
