I promised you the sequel, and here it is: Half a year after our chat in London, I am meeting one of the gauchos del mar again to talk about their latest mission: A sailing trip to Antarctica. What challenges did they face, what is it like to ride a wave in the coldest and harshest part of the earth, what motivates them to make films over films, and why do we need to care about krill?

The Argentinian brothers Joaquín and Julian Azulay have found waves that have never been surfed and explored places that most of us don't know. Over two years, they crossed the African continent in an Unimog and brought back a film with a message. In this podcast I am talking to Julian in London, right before the premiere of their latest film: Antarctica.

Cira Riedel, founder of Greenroom Voice, advises outdoor brands on sustainability issues and also hosts a podcast on this matter. So I can talk to her about the elephant in the room that’s always there on our surf trips: The contradiction between the appeal of surfing and the reality of the industry. Even if we are just enjoying a nature-based sport for ourselves, we can hardly avoid leaving a footprint—from the gear we use to the transportation we choose. How do we deal with this dilemma? Cira has a few surprisingly pragmatic tips.

While sitting in my campervan on a busy street in Biarritz, Lee-Ann told me a bit about the chance and burden of being born in a family of surf legends, what it is like to be openly gay as a pro surfer and how surfing can become part of the performing arts.

In order to reach a broader audience, we recorded this podcast in English - which felt funny, because we normally speak French when we meet. She was part of my arte documentary CHICKS ON BOARDS, together with her aunt Christine.

Lee-Ann spoke softly and thoughtfully, which may have had something to do with the change in language, but also with the calmness and modesty she exudes.
