In late 2019, I was contacted by a man whose story completely changed my mindset and brought clarity (ah-ha moment that lasted years) of who I am and why I am so compelled to ensure all dogs are treated as individuals, with dignity and respect, and that people have access to the skills and tools to make previously traumatized and unwanted dogs feel comfortable, loved, understood, and welcome.
Close to this time, I was contacted by another man who enlightened me on my method, thus changing my professional direction and positioning.
These two life and career changing events profoundly impacted me as a person and the influence of CCBT in the animal welfare industry.
These stories have only been revealed twice - embedded into other shows, and never as stories unto themselves and on this level. These stories continue to impact me, as I continue to absorb and process the information.
I appreciate your interest and genuine desire to help animals.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns, and, if you like the episode, please share and/or provide a rating and review.

The low-down on animal welfare orgs, dog experts, and the shelter system - are they working in your favor?
27 Dec 2022
00:35:01
Welcome to the final episode of 2022 - a not-so-typical year in review.
It is time! You deserve to know why the dog behavioral experts are keeping the info from you. Why is the shelter system unaware of Canine CBT - or are they? Are behavioral veterinarians any more educated than your average trainer? Why are trainers scared to admit that methods are not meeting the needs of all the clients?
This episode is, essentially, a year in review – with a twist. Have you wondered why the so-called industry experts do not know Canine CBT? Here is your answer! Find out what the industry experts are doing and how it affects you, your dog, and your industry related profession!
BEFORE LISTENING:
It is important to note two points:
1) the orgs or individuals mentioned in the episode are not required, responsible, or expected to accept, review, or evaluate CCBT. Equally, they do not hold the power or the right to assess, approve, disapprove, dismiss, or judge CCBT. The industry is non-regulated, which means there is no governing, regulatory body that is required, or available, to review and assess innovations. There is simply no process or organization, as with regulated industries, to do this. CCBT is scientifically proven by meeting the requirements to scientifically prove a methodology.
2) Dr. Nicolas Dodman runs a non-profit organization whose website states the mission is to research and perform studies to discover solutions to prevent behavioral euthanasia and surrender, which is why I reached out to him. During our conversation, he admitted to not knowing what the website stated, and that their goal is to increase donations via media and awareness.
So, both these points will make more sense when you dive into the episode. I apologize for not including this info in the episode.

Senior Dogs - What to Expect, with guest Dr. Cristina Diaz Madronero. Snippet: Best training method based on life stage
29 Nov 2022
00:35:36
Cristina is a Veterinary Surgeon. Author. RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Dermatology. She shares with us her vast knowledge on senior dogs in respect to health issues, changes, and what to expect.
This fun, casual conversation ventures into chatting about adopting mature dogs, and, well, just how great they are!
I follow our chat by introducing the topic I spoke on at the Animal Behavior Society Conference 2022. You may have heard me say, multiple times, "There is no one right way to work with a dog," and in this episode I explain what I mean. Not only should the method match the reason for the behavior and the personality of the dog, but also, because of brain development in different life stages, some methods are simply more effective than others at different ages. Find out why!
Thanks for your interest, and as always, feedback and questions are welcome.

Dominance, Alpha and Pack Leader - The Good, the Bad, and the Useless (not in that order).
27 Sep 2022
00:14:23
Hello and thanks for joining me!
I am guessing most of you are not proponents of methods that take a "dominance" approach. What does this really entail? And how is it different from Alpha and Pack Leader?
There are common exercises in dominance training that may not seem as though they would have a negative effect, and, in fact, are part of mainstream dog training. Is going through a door first harmful or simply counterproductive? Can this routine lead to dominance, and will that achieve the goal of addressing unwanted behavior? How do dogs perceive these exercises and the theory of dominance?
This episode raises some interesting thoughts on how mainstream dog training can, unintentionally, decrease the bond between you and your dog, and effect the success of your training routine. Or perhaps your dog simply thinks you are not very bright!
I then provide some suggestions for exercises to try at home to improve the bond and increase your communication with your dog.

Neuroscience Explains Adolescent Dog Behavior and Training Methods
28 Jun 2022
00:15:20
Welcome! In this episode I refer to the studies by Dr. Kathy Murphy, owner of Barking Brains, and a neuroscientist who specializes in brain development in respect to behaviors and the success (or lack there of) of training methods in different life stages.
This episode focuses on the adolescent stage, describing brain development and how it effects behaviors. There are a lot of comparisons to teenagers!
The adolescent stage is where I have devoted my three decades of study and work to, and where Canine CBT is particularly effective. Find out why based on neuroscience!
For a more indepth study of this topic, I suggest taking the course by neuroscientist Dr. Angelova through the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy.

Water Rescue Dogs - the story of Al, by guest, Lynne Cox
31 May 2022
00:30:24
Welcome to Dog Training DisrUPted, by UPWARD Dogology
This episode features animal lover, professional swimmer, writer, speaker, and creator of peace, Lynne Cox.
Lynne's new book, Tales of Al, The Water Rescue Dog, is a heartwarming story about a dog expected to be an "easy train" by the elite Italian Water Rescue Dog Team. Lynne recounts her visit to Italy, meeting all the dogs, and sharing the story of Al, (well, not the end of the story!)
Lynne is an American long-distance open-water swimmer, who is best known for being the first person to swim between the US and the Soviet Union in the Bering Strait, a feat which has been recognized for easing the Cold War tensions between Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. She still swims every morning, preferably with dogs, and she is such an inspiration for so many people. I have the utmost respect for Lynne.
Following our chat, I talk about cognitive skills, and they are harnessed differently for different activities, and the importance of adapting to dog's personalities.

Leash Walks - Dogs Love Them, And You Should, Too!
26 Apr 2022
00:20:50
Leash walks can be frustrating when dogs are pulling, putting on the brakes, or lolly-gagging. Should you be expected to continuously turn around, or simply allow your dog to sniff everything? Should you be expected to have decompression walks that are really only decompressing for your dog?
In this ep I talk about common recommendations, from continuously turning around, standing still, to allowing your dog to sniff and decide the direction (is this a technique?). I talk about different apparatuses designed to prevent pulling, and discuss some pros and cons of some popular ones.
I make some suggestions of easy exercises to apply to gain greater focus (no, not treats or the look at me command), and provide suggestions as to how to apply these to your situation and daily life.
Leash walking is all about having the skills to communicate and provide calm, clear direction. Your dog's perception of you and the environment determines his or her behavior.
NOTE - this is not a training guide. The advice is to be adjusted to your needs and specific situation, and dog.
NOTE - for dogs over six months of age

Habits, Cues, Triggers - How do they effect behavior in humans and dogs?
29 Mar 2022
01:30:30
Does your dog run to the door when you pick up your car keys? Or run to the door with the sound of your partner's car pulling? Or jump off the couch when you click off the tv?
These are triggers that create habits - good habits! But what about habits our dogs have that are not what we perceive as "good" or "wanted". These habits lead to unwanted behavior, but mainstream dog training addresses these as "good vs bad behavior", using conditioning methods to change them, which can often fail.
Canine CBT views all behaviors as driven by emotional intelligence and a self-perceived need to do a behavior to achieve a goal. The behavior becomes a habit based on cognitive skills. To change that behavior, we must change perception.
My guest (or, more accurately, me as a guest on his podcast) , Ian Tolson, is an expert in habits - why we have them, how we can change them, and how they effect our behavior. This episode unfolded from a chat intended to be an episode for Ian's podcast, and turned into a chat on how habits form behaviors, and how we change these behaviors by changing perception.
Is there much difference between humans and dogs in relation to cognitive skills, emotional intelligence, and behaviors stemming from these? Find out in this off-the-cuff chat.
I follow this chat with exercises that change a dog's perception of you and your ability to calmly manage situations.

"Why Won't My Adopted Dog Eat?" Solutions Based in Logic and CCBT (no, not handfeeding)
22 Feb 2022
00:10:33
Welcome! Adopting a dog over the age of six months is rewarding and fun. When initially integrating dogs into a family, we can expect some challenges. As with humans, change in eating habits is a common reaction to stress caused by change in environment or physical ailments. When physically healthy dogs who are adapting well to their new environment refuse to eat, it can be scary and a bit of a mystery for many adopters. Fortunately, their are quick solutions grounded in logic, creativity, and the ability to think like a dog, as well as long-term solutions grounded in Canine CBT which address the root of the problem.
As discussed in the conclusion, here are the links to a few of the many shows I am a featured guest on:

Welcome to Dog Training DisrUPted. Do you get overwhelmed by the amount of conflicting suggestions and advise? You are not alone! Surprisingly, many of those approaches may be effective, and many ineffective - why?
Many methods assess behaviors and then implement solutions to address the behavior.
CCBT analyzes the situation, determining the reason for the dog's behaivor, based on the goal and thought processes.
This episode explores one situation (a dog growling) in four different scenerios, Based on the information we gather, we can determine the reason for the behavior - which is different in each situation, which is important in determining the platform exercises we develop.
Put on your thinking cap, or perhaps your detective cap, and join me on a journey in dissecting dog behavior. More fun than it sounds!

Are Industry Leaders Giving You The Info You Need and Deserve? Let's Explore Some Other Resources.
28 Dec 2021
00:14:40
Welcome to the final episode of 2021! This episode was a challenge. So much happened in 2021 in relation to spreading awareness of Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, making connections, collaborating, and learning about the industry.
I decided to share, in brief, the pitfalls of the industry, which, for those who listen other episodes, know all too well. Through the closed doors I received from influential orgs, I learned a lot about the underlying mechanics of the dog world, which, not surprisingly, function much like other industries - ego, greed and personal agendas rank high.
I took this info and turned it into effective connections and collaborations. In this episode, I introduce you to changemakers whom you may not be aware of because, like myself, they do not follow the industry norm, and they are not afraid to make waves in the better interest of dogs and the people who love them.
I wish you all the best in 2022 and, as always, I appreciate your support and all you do for the pets in your care.
Enjoy Your Learning Journey.

Michael Overlie: The Relationship between Men and their Dogs; How CBT is Changing Mindset on the need for "Boundaries" and "Discipline".
30 Nov 2021
00:26:08
Welcome! You are going to love this chat with Michael!
Michael Overlie is a Canine-Partnered Coach, Energy Healer, and Author. Michael provides men with the tools to be not only a great dog-dad, but also the best human they can be, by changing their perceived need to be the tough guy, or use their dog as a status symbol. Amazingly, Michael accomplishes this in the most relaxed, holistic, and centered manner. I learned about Michael's mindset as we went through this most interesting chat. Trust me, he is like no one else you have met - come join us!
Speaking of mindset....I follow the chat with a talk on how the mindset toward dogs is progressing (finally) toward communicating and bonding with dogs - essentially a more holistic approach. Is this possible while remaining within the realms of conventional training techniques? I refer to a trainer who, in an attempt to improve the adoption process, encourages "Boundaries" and "Discipline" in the early stages. As much as I promote interacting with a newly adopted dog, as opposed to doing essentially "nothing", instilling boundaries and discipline is not the direction we want to go with dogs over 6 months.

"When Your Child Asks For A Dog" - An interview with author, Ciaran Walsh. Followed By: "Is Having a Dog and a Baby Too Time Consuming?"
26 Oct 2021
00:43:40
Welcome! In this episode, we chat with author, Ciaran Walsh, on how his newly released book gives parents a "get out of jail free card" when their child asks for a dog. This questions ("Can I have a dog pleeeeeeease?") is asked hundreds of times around the world daily. Are you prepared for the answer?
Although a children's book, the underlying purpose is to provide parents with the tools to determine if their family is ready to bring a dog into their lives and, if so, how to responsibly choose the right dog for them. This book is creative, fun and packed with thought provoking questions.
This chat is followed up with a talk on bringing a child home when you already have a dog. Many people feel pressured to surrender their dog due to "not enough time". Is this necessary and what can you do to prepare?

The Adolescent Stage - Dog Cognition Skills Kick In - Learn How to Adapt.
28 Sep 2021
00:12:09
The adolescent stage can be very challenging, even for the most experienced dog owners, irrelevant of the dog's upbringing, breed or training history. In this episode, I refer to dogs that have had a traditional upbringing - that of the same home since puppyhood and exposed to socialization, non-aversive training, and positive experiences. When these dogs suddenly rebel and seemingly forget everything they learn, it is common to assume they are being disobedient, but really what is happening, is their cognitive skills are kicking-in! They are processing, thinking and reacting differently. We need to change and adapt the way we work with them to harness these skills.

Which Method is Best for Anxiety Rehab and Why? Then, Meet Brad Malin, of Companion CBD.
15 Aug 2021
00:28:34
Welcome to our first mid-month episode where I provide insight and info on dog behavior, followed by an guest speaker who is in an expert in their field.
Let's talk about Anxiety Rehabilitation! Conventional methods, ones common in mainstream dog training, adhere to the principles of Conditioning Methodologies. They are intentionally designed to teach and encourage expected behaviors, and prevent unwanted behaviors, making them great for puppies and some dogs. But what happens when dogs already feel fear or anxiety and their behaviors are already established? Well, this is where cognitive behavioral therapy shines! Find out why.
Meet Brad Malin, owner of Companion CBD, the only CBD product with a veterinarian on the team! Brad has a background in health and has worked closely with veterinarians. Frustrated by the inefficiencies of CBD for pets, he, along with veterinarians, developed the only CBD product in soft chews and backed by veterinarians. Find out what you need to know about CBD products - you will be surprised!

Welcome!
This episode was inspired by a ClubHouse Chat with the Director of the Thinking Dog Centre and Asst Prof at Hunter College, Sarah Byosiere, who talked about cognitive abilities in dogs and puppies. I often get asked why I do not work with puppies - find out why! How are the cognitive skills of puppies harnessed and applied differently to that of dogs?

What Do We Do When Adopted Dogs Won't Eat?; The Decompression Period - Do Dogs Need It?; A Scientific Study on Street Dogs and Behavioral Issues.
29 Jun 2021
00:16:03
Adopting a dog is rewarding, but can be challenging due to inherent stress. A reaction to stress is, as with humans, not eating, which can be scary! Common techniques often fail because they are not addressing the reason - in other words, we need to find the reason to determine solution. What if the dog is not stressed? What if their are no physical ailments? Maybe the solution requires logic and an understanding of how dog's think and feel and what is important to each dog.
We then chat about the Decompression period - is it simply an extension of the 3 day, 3 week, 3 month "meme"? Do dogs need it?
A recent scientific study out of the UK compares the opinions of veterinarians to those of dog owners regarding aggression and anxiety in former street dogs adopted into homes. The results are...well....they certainly bring home the need to more effectively address aggression and anxiety in adopted dogs. We got this covered, but are the vets listening?

What Does It Mean to truly Understand Your Dog? "Talking With The Dogs" with Liz Murdoch; Feedback From Last Ep. Leash Walk Challenge; The Dangers of Pre-setting Training Goals
25 May 2021
00:26:22
This ep. is all about reading and understanding our dogs, respecting their needs, and adapting to their personalities and they grow and change.
Liz Murdoch is an animal communicator with a passion for helping people bond and understand their pet on a whole new level. This is a great chat full of surprising tidbits of info.
I follow this with three examples of feedback I received from the challenge from last month's ep. (inserting command based exercises on a leash walk that require your feet to move when the dog does not, and unteaching the Sit command). This leads to some surprising results for two dogs with different kinds of anxiety and one silly dog!
I then use a client example to show the benefits of providing dogs with options. By pre-determining the end goal, we often limit the ability for dogs to overcome fears and prevent ourselves from enjoying the company of our dog. UPWARD Dogology allows us to provide skills to read the dog, adapt to individual dogs' personalities and progress as the dog progresses.

Dog anxiety often leads to behaviors that results in frustration for pet parents, leading to surrender or euthanasia. There are a plethora of approaches to address it, so how do you choose the best one for you and your dog?
Anxiety is an emotion, not a behavior. It is essential to apply a method that acknowledges emotions, taking an approach whereby we do not suppress the emotion, but rather, provides skills to regulate, process, and replace "harmful" emotions with positive ones.
In this episode, I introduce Emotional Replacement Therapy. I address common changes that occur as we work our way through the program, and discuss "coping mechanisms" and "impulse control"

Can Positive Reinforcement Training reach the cognitive side of the brain? The Benefits of Canine Enrichment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for dogs explained using a Soup Recipe (WTF?). Tip on Bringing a Rescued Dog into your Home.

A listener, who is a scientist, asked a great question - "Can positive reinforcement training reach the cognitive side of the brain?" Great question. I had to think about this and am excited to share my thoughts.
We then explore Canine Enrichment exercises, their benefits, and if they reach the cognitive side of the brain.
I then use an example provided by a professor as to what CBT is and how it is like making soup!
I was recently a guest on a tv show where I provided a tip that combines R+ exercises and CBT to help integrate a rescued dog into your home. This tip got a lot of great feedback, so I thought I would share it.

Connecting Scientific Studies on Dog Cognition to that of Common Dog Behavior Problems and the Best Method to Address Unwanted Dog Behavior.
23 Feb 2021
00:20:31
Billie uses 4 scientific studies on dog cognition to explain why we need a method grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy to address a common unwanted behavior in dogs over 6 months.
In this episode we explore four cognitive abilities by introducing the studies which prove dogs have these abilities. I discuss how these abilities, although considered positive, can cause common unwanted behaviors and why suppressing these skills can increase the unwanted behavior.
Memory, Emotions, Object Permanence, Object Differentiation, Dexterity, and the ability to understand that an action has a result are some of the recent trends in scientific studies. If dogs can think cognitively, and their behaviors, whether considered "good" or "bad" (wanted or unwanted) are a result of these skills, we need to harness these skills to understand these behaviors. By remaining under the Operant Conditioning umbrella (positive reinforcement and balanced training), we simply cannot harness their cognitive abilities, which explains why addressing these behaviors is often challenging or impossible.
NOTE: At the time of recording this episode, I did not discuss counter conditioning as a method to address unwanted behaviors. There are other episodes which discuss counter conditioning and why it is limiting or ineffective in addressing behaviors.
NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist or a certified dog trainer to understand the info in this episode. If you have questions, please contact Billie at billie@upwarddogology.com

Diving Deep into a Scientific Study on Adolescent Dog Behavior. Perhaps the methods we use perpetuate the behaviors associated with adolescence.
25 Jan 2021
00:22:35
Welcome to the first episode of 2021 where we dissect a scientific study which, although valid and adhering to professional standards, begs the question as to whether the exercise, grounded in positive reinforcement training used to determine the results, is a factor in creating the change in behaviors commonly associated with the adolescent stage.
In other words: are the methods we use to solve the problems actually causing the problems?
NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist to understand the info in this episode, nor do you need to review the study before hand.
As you can see, we have moved to a monthly schedule to allow more time to pursue options for sharing the UPWARD Dogology formula on a larger scale, and to create episodes with in-depth information on dog behavior.
Season 6 dissects dog behavior using various scientific studies and methods to help us better understand adolescent and rescued dogs. The dirty topic of "Dominance". Comparing dogs and humans in respect to communication, perception and how we project ourselves with guest Sandra Davis of The PeopleSmart Academy.
01 Dec 2020
00:43:16
Dominance is a buzzword, and often controversial topic, in the dog world. Why? Well, it has a negative connotation, yet at the same time, dog owners are often told they need to gain dominance over their dog. What is acceptable? Is gaining Dominance really our goal? Is expecting our place on the hierarchy ladder and our rules and policies to be respected asking too much?
This thought-provoking piece on Dominance is followed by a chat with Sandra Davis, co-owner of The People Smart Academy. Comparing humans and canines is, again, a controversial topic, yet, as professions, we find it effective (yes, Sandra compares humans to dogs!). How we express ourselves, read others, teach and coach, and communicate is so important in all we do in life.

Can upbringing/puppyhood effect the behavior and personality of a dog? Why are 100,000 dogs killed in Spain each year?
17 Nov 2020
00:29:30
Are behavioral issues unique to geographical locations? level of abuse? lifestyle during puppyhood? How do these effect the personality or needs of a dog? Perhaps all of these have an effect, but what is most important are the way the dog thinks and processes based on experiences, which are not as unique to geographical location and/or breed as one may think. How a dog is forced to think and how he perceives his surroundings effects his behaviours. Sound obvious? You think it would be more obvious that it appears to be.
Did you know every year 100,000 dogs are murdered in Spain? Mary, of Extraordinary Galgos and Podencos, Atlantic Chapter, is passionate about spreading awareness to help dogs, and she does not sugar-coat it! Join us for our chat with Mary who knows first hand the effects of upbringing on behaviours and personalities of dogs. She shares her knowledge of Greyhounds, Galgos, and Podencos and the situation that is going on in Spain.

I recently took two puppies in off a reserve and here is what I learned! By understating puppy training and braining , we can better understand how different methods are effective at different stages.
Meet Jonesy and Jackson, 3 month old puppies who are very different from each other. How are methods adapted? Why is it important to view training as bonding and harnessing cognitive skills, as opposed to "tick the boxes".
Referencing specific examples with these pups, this episode explores operant conditioning and Canine CBT.

One of the most important approaches of UPWARD Dogology is "Never rush to your end goal". Sound obvious? Why are Negative Reinforcements Still Present? Are Avoidance and Distraction Realistic and Effective?
13 Oct 2020
00:15:34
In the last decade or more there has been huge changes and advancements in the dog world at large and within the behavior/training sector. Thanks to influential organizations such as The Fear Free Movement, the popularity of negative reinforcements has decreased dramatically. Because Conditioning methods rely on reinforcements, this leaves positive reinforcements to carry the weight. Is this a realistic expectation?
The industries insistence of only including methods which rely on reinforcements has lead to an increase in gadgets and legitimizing "techniques" such as Avoidance and Distraction or simply "Managing Your Dog's Anxiety". Are these realistic and, when dog owners are not satisfied, is it fair to blame them?
Thanks to Open Strum and Brian John Harwood for the music clips!

Learn how The Man That Rescues Dogs Foundation is changing street life in Thailand. Should we convince, bribe or enforce rules to get dogs to learn right from wrong behavior?
29 Sep 2020

Michael Baines, founder of The Man That Rescues Dogs Foundation, knows how to run a dog rescue and devotes his life to it. Located in Thailand, TMTRD Foundation has made a huge impact on the local community because of Michael's straight-forward, honest and charismatic approach. This interview is full of surprises - especially the answer to the infamous Tail-End question!
This engaging interview is followed by the always controversial topic of treats and praise. I share what I learned from working with rescued dogs; as much as we want to praise and treat them into doing the "right" behaviour, or "force an issue" by enforcing rules, or rushing to the end goal, we need to work with these dogs in a way that makes sense to them - remember, they are alive because they know how to process and think with the cognitive side of their brain.

Michael Schneider, founder of Pilots to the Rescue, combines his love for flying with his passion for helping animals of all kinds (including us two-leggers). Our chat with Michael takes us into the world of flying dogs out of the worst situations, to their rescuers, who then find their furever homes. The rewards far outweigh the challenges - find out why!
The SnipPet piece talks about why the dog world struggles to meet the needs of dogs over 6 months of age, from a behavioural rehabilitation stand-point. Learn why the new, trending method, Balanced Training, is an option when applied properly, and one many people naturally apply. But is it enough? What are the signs (from your dog) that you need to move away from Conditioning methods, and onto Canine CBT?

It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology.
Most importantly, Upward Dogology has a change in music! The Connection Between the Canine-Guardian Bond and Dog Behavior
31 Oct 2023
00:21:43
In this episode, I read my scientific paper from my PhD course (Cognition, Emotion to Improve Animal Welfare - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences).
No scientific knowledge or prep required. I discuss canine enrichment, street dogs, adolescent dogs, and the guardian-canine bond to bring to light the benefits of human-based approaches, such as Flow, Cognitive Enrichment, and CBT meet the needs of pet parents and dogs.
ABSTRACT - "The aim of this paper is to highlight the connection between cognitive processes, affected states (primarily in relation to the guardian-canine bond), and behavior to explore the effects of these factors on the welfare of domestic dogs. I begin by presenting the proven benefits, as well as the limitations, of enrichment activities and training programs. I discuss the importance of stimulating cognitive functions and establishing the guardian-canine bond to prevent and address behaviors leading to surrender, euthanasia, and the implementation of aversive measures, and refer to studies to highlight the benefits of further research into factors affecting behavior. I then move beyond enrichment and the discussion of positive verses negative conditioning methods to introduce strategies borrowed from the human world to heighten cognitive stimulation, enhance bonding, and address behavioral issues as potential suggestions for future exploration to improve the welfare of domestic dogs."
For a pdf copy of the paper with citations and links to referenced studies, please email me at bgroom@antioch.edu Thank you

Nikki, vet. tech and creator of The Canine Health Nut, is passionate about sharing health and nutritional information that really matters. Lose the generic info and find the facts! Speaking of "generic advice", beware of "coffee shop" behavioral advice.
25 Aug 2020
00:35:35
Nikki is not only a certified veterinarian technician, but also a research nut - especially when it comes to canine health and nutrition. She is chalk full of cool advice (the "who knew?" kind of tips and info). She digs deep in her research and talks with vets and canine nutritionists and then puts it all into an easy to understand "nutshell". There is so much info, especially generic information, on social media it is easy to get misinformed and lead down the wrong path. The Canine Health Nut is here to help guide you in the right direction.
As Nikki suggests for health related advice, behavioural advice provided on social media or through "coffee shop conversation" (because "everyone is a dog expert") may not be wrong, but it may not be correlative to your issues or needs, or the personality of your dog. Examples are provided to help you weed through the crap and focus on your goals.

Kerk Murray left his ostentatious lifestyle behind when he found a dog in need. Author and creator of a non-profit, Kerk shares his story to inspire others.

Our featured guest is Kerk Murray, whose story is somewhat opposite of "rags to riches". He is the author of "Pawprints on our Hearts" and the founder of the non-profit organization, Lexi's Legacy Foundation, dedicated to helping rescue organizations thrive and over-come challenges. Kerk's acute business skills combined with his "light-bulb" moment of realizing his true destiny makes this episode one that will inspire us all to use our attributes to help animals in need.

Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros with Canadian Trucking Magazine have saved the lives of hundreds of animals and what it takes to do this. SnipPet Piece - Keeping "four-on-the-floor", as suggested by truckers.
11 Aug 2020
00:34:16
Season 4 introduces us to people who volunteer and work with dogs in a variety of ways. Billie hosts these eye-opening and entertaining Q and A, conversational style interviews with her co-host, David L. Helsel, rescuer and volunteer. Each interview is followed by a SnipPet piece on a dog related topic relevant to the interview.
In this episode, we interview Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros, a non-profit organization founded by Margaret Foster-Hyde, that organizes the transport of animals across North America to their new homes! 100% volunteer run, the truckers get as much out of these transports as the pets do. The effort, planning and passion that goes into these transports is well worth it.
Listen in on the three way conversation where we have an off-the-cuff chat with Maggie, a seasoned trucker and youngest member of Furry Hobos N Hiway Heros, and Dave Mackenzie, editor and publisher of Canadian Trucking Magazine (CTM) and long-time supporter of Margaret and her efforts. You don't want to miss this one!
The SnipPet Tip is, appropriately on why truckers are more logical than trainers when it comes to advising on how to keep your dog calm, especially in places such as a vehicle.
