Denis Hayes, Chairman and President at Bullitt Foundation, returns to share the strategies he implemented for effective grantmaking. Denis explains the importance of legitimacy in philanthropic decision-making, the value of diverse board representation, and how focusing efforts geographically and strategically helped the foundation create a significant impact. Denis also provides insights on the decision to spend down and offers advice for future philanthropists on how to make meaningful, long-lasting contributions to causes they care about.

Denis Hayes Bio:
Denis Hayes is an environmentalist and a long-time champion of solar & renewable energy. He rose to prominence in 1970 as the coordinator for the first Earth Day. He subsequently founded the Earth Day Network and expanded the event to 180 nations. Earth Day is now the most widely observed secular holiday in the world.
During the Carter Administration, Hayes was director of the federal Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Hayes became an adjunct professor of engineering at Stanford University for several years, and also practiced law in Silicon Valley. Since 1992, Hayes has been president of the Bullitt Foundation in Washington and continues to be a leader in environmental and energy policy. He was the principal developer of the Bullitt Center, judged by World Architecture Magazine to be "the greenest office building in the world."
Hayes has also served as Executive director of Environmental Action, Director of the Illinois State Energy Office, Visiting Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Fellow of the Worldwatch Institute, Fellow at the Bellagio Center, and Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow of the Bosch Foundation.
Hayes has received the national Jefferson Awards Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as numerous other awards. Time Magazine named him as "Hero of the Planet" in 1999; the NYT profiled him as its Newsmaker of the Day; and Life Magazine selected him as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century. His newest book, COWED: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on America's Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment, was published by W.W. Norton in 2015.

Daniel Blake Bio:
As CEO, Daniel leads the team at UI Charitable Advisors and spearheads initiatives that empower high-net-worth individuals to achieve their philanthropic objectives while nurturing the next generation of social impact leaders. Previously, he was the CEO and co-founder of EcoScraps, which Scott’s Miracle-Gro acquired (NYSE: SMG), where he was a Director for their sustainability and hydroponic business unit. He has led sustainability initiatives with the US State Department, United Nations World Food Programme, Amazon, Google, Home Depot, Walmart, and some of the world’s largest food companies etc
Daniel has been named one of the top Social Impact Entrepreneurs in the USA by Bloomberg Businessweek and has been featured as the cover story in both Inc. Magazine and Forbes. Daniel studied English at BYU where he currently serves as an adjunct professor and is on the board of advisors for the Ballard Center for Social Impact.

For example, she discovered that of the top 20 charities in the United States, 11 of the top twenty are DAFs. She wants you to know that most people don’t realize that the top charities in the United States are DAFs. For example, Fidelity Charitable takes in 4 times the contributions as the largest working charity. Helen wants people to know just how big DAFs are becoming and what that means for our charitable institutions.

Helen Flannery Bio:
Helen Flannery directs research for the Charity Reform Initiative at the Institute for Policy Studies. Helen’s research focuses on the relationship between philanthropy and inequality, including the policies and practices surrounding charitable mega-giving, private foundations, and donor-advised funds.
Prior to her current employment, Helen provided nonprofits with reporting, analytics, and industry benchmarking services through her work at Target Analytics and ROI Solutions. At those organizations, she also wrote extensively on charitable sector fundraising topics such as direct marketing, sustainer giving, and the economic factors affecting donor behavior.

Andrea Rush is Senior Vice President of Philanthropic Solutions and has more than 22 years of experience handling all aspects of philanthropic and specialized grant-making services, including direct international grants and grant agreements. Andrea is responsible for the oversight of NPT’s various philanthropic vehicles such as Supporting Organizations and Special Projects. She is a member of the NGO Source Advisory Council and a graduate of the Leadership Philadelphia Core Class of 2011. Andrea was formerly an elementary school teacher for the School District of Philadelphia. She received her B.S. with honors in Education from Temple University and holds a certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership from Bryn Mawr College.

Lee Crockett joins us to share his expertise as the executive director of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF). Lee shares how donors founded SCF and pooled funds to form strategic partnerships that conserve the shark population. Lee explains the difference between the regular nonprofit and the pooled donor strategy, while also offering words of wisdom for those using this strategy.

Lee Crockett Bio:
As executive director of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), Lee is responsible for designing and implementing programmatic and grantmaking strategies, managing SCF’s grantmaking portfolio and staff, forming strategic partnerships with NGOs and other funders, fundraising, ensuring strong operations and governance, and representing the SCF to governments, NGOs, philanthropists, and the public.Prior to joining the SCF, Lee spent 20 years working on fisheries management at the state, interstate, federal, and international levels with both the US. Government and the non-profit sector. Most recently, he was the Director of U.S. Oceans for The Pew Charitable Trusts where he led Pew’s efforts to establish policies to end overfishing and promote ecosystem-based fisheries management. Before joining Pew, Crockett was executive director of the Marine Fish Conservation Network, the largest U.S. coalition dedicated to promoting the sustainable management of ocean fish. Prior to that, he was a fishery biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service, leading agency efforts to protect essential fish habitat. He also served as a staff member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries.Crockett holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in biological oceanography from the University of Connecticut.
