Marceline, Missouri is the boyhood hometown of Walt Disney, and the Uptown Theatre is a cinema on Marceline’s Main Street where Walt and Roy premiered “The Great Locomotive Chase”. The Uptown Theatre has a long history, but sadly, in recent years it has fallen into disrepair. A lot of money and work will need to go into bringing it back to life, and Ed is working hard to make that a reality. He’s already had some success getting the Uptown Theatre on the National Register of Historic Places, which is no small feat. Listen as Ed and I discuss the theatres' history, the small town of Marceline, Missouri, and what Ed envisions for the reopening of the theatre during its 100th anniversary. Most likely you’ve seen old episodes of the Disneyland television series where Walt Disney and his Imagineers were building the first ever Audio-Animatronic figures like the Enchanted Tiki Room birds, President Lincoln, pirates, and many more. And that’s how it used to work. Nobody was building animatronics at that time, so The Walt Disney Company and the folks at WED Enterprises had to do it for themselves. A lot of people still believe the animatronic figures we see in new attractions are being made at Walt Disney Imagineering. But that’s rarely the case these days. Enter Garner Holt, who has been creating the greatest animatronics in the world since 1977, and has been building them for Disney for several decades. Whether it's small animated figures on parade floats, a giant Maleficent dragon, or anything in between, there’s a good chance that Garner Holt Productions had their hands in the project. Listen as Garner shares the story of how a visit to Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion changed the trajectory of his life, and how he later got to play in that exact sandbox with the creation of Haunted Mansion Holiday. Disney and Star Wars have a long history together. It all started with the E-Ticket attraction Star Tours at Disneyland. Back then, who knew that just a few decades later The Walt Disney Company would no longer need to license these characters from George Lucas for use in their parks, as they would later own the entirety of Lucasfilm Ltd. But there was a shift in Disney’s relationship with the Star Wars characters once they purchased them. What used to be a very playful franchise they didn’t take all that seriously has now become serious business with extremely strict rules in regard to timeline, continuity, and character integrity. As you cross the bridge, you see Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room on your left. Do you decide to enter? If your answer is “No”, I’m sure it will change to “Yes” by the end of today’s episode as you’ll have a much greater appreciation for this attraction. Joining me is Ken Bruce, author of “Before the Birds Sang Words”. In his book, Ken deep dives into the history of this attraction that has Walt’s hands all over it. Ken makes his case as to why it’s one of the most important attractions inside a Disney park and why it should always remain.
