"My Love is Your Love" (1998): WHITNEY HOUSTON - Track by Track Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}09 Nov 202301:13:32

In this episode, Angie and Steffi continue their review of Whitney Houston’s “My Love is Your Love” (1998) album. We are reviewing the album track by track. This is the second part of the album breakdown. The first five songs were discussed in part 1, and the era breakdown will take place in parts 3 and 4.

As we do in all of our Diva Discography episodes, part 1 (technically this is part 2) is an in-depth review and discussion of EVERY SINGLE TRACK of the album.

Because we - namely Steffi - are huge Whitney Houston stans, we are dividing our album breakdown into two separate episodes. Go back and listen to our thoughts on the first five songs in part 1.

Album Info: My Love Is Your Love is the fourth studio album by American singer Whitney Houston, released worldwide on November 17, 1998. It was Houston's first studio album in eight years, following I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990) although she had participated on three movie soundtracks during that period. My Love Is Your Love is composed of mid-tempo R&B, hip hop soul, pop and dance music, produced by musicians such as Rodney Jerkins, Soulshock & Karlin, Missy Elliott, Wyclef Jean, David Foster, Lauryn Hill, and Babyface.

"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (1998): LAURYN HILL - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 3}26 Oct 202301:54:52

In part 3 of our Lauryn Hill “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (1998) saga, Angie and Steffi break down the era. We discuss tension within The Fugees in the leadup to Lauryn Hill going solo, Robert Glasper’s (one-sided?) feud, the theme-specific marketing & rollout of the era, and how Lauryn bowed out of music when she was on top - much to the chagrin of the industry & the public. Plus, a discussion on Lauryn Hill’s post-Miseducation years and her “mis” reputation as a performer.

We also briefly discuss our thoughts on Michelle Williams’ voice performance for Britney Spears’ memoir. “OH YEA. FO SHIZ. FO SHIZ. GINUWINE. WAT’S UP HOMIE?”.

In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we deep dive into Lauryn Hill’s very busy “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” era. We talk about how Lauryn Hill may have been underestimated artistically as the only female in The Fugees & as a new mother in the leadup to the album. Additionally, we discuss claims of Lauryn Hill being difficult to work with, her notorious reputation as a live performer today and how a young 23 year old Lauryn Hill made Grammy history back in 1999.

Again, this is part 3 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to parts 1 & 2 where we discussed the album track by track.

We hope you enjoyed our Lauryn Hill  “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” journey.

Album Info: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the only solo studio album by American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. It was released on August 25, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a neo soul and R&B album with some songs based in hip hop soul and reggae. Its lyrics touch upon Hill's pregnancy and the turmoil within her former group the Fugees, along with themes of love and God. The album's title was inspired by the film and autobiographical novel The Education of Sonny Carson, and Carter G. Woodson's The Mis-Education of the Negro.

In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we detail Amy’s various personal struggles and how the pervasive 2000s media pushed down on her & other young women at the time. We also discuss Amy Winehouse’s musical legacy and how she paved the way for other up & coming British acts of the time - including of course, Adele.

Carol (2015): CATE BLANCHETT & ROONEY MARA {Part 3}11 Jan 202401:53:30

In this episode, Angie and Steffi’s “Carol” discussion comes to an end. They discuss “Carol” being overlooked by the Oscars, their lackluster marketing campaign, gay shaking, and why the movie will forever be a favorite for people with taste - including you, Harold. This is part 2 of 2 of our era breakdown episodes, and the final part of our “Carol” episodes.

Continuing where we left off with tea - we get into some MAJOR TEA in this episode, including: Cate Blanchett’s controversial Variety interview, Harvey Weinstein, Rooney Mara & category fraud, and JUSTICE FOR CAROL (2015). We also hyper analyze “Carol”’s marketing material including that exquisite teaser trailer, the emotional first trailer…and that really sketchy second trailer. Plus, “Harold, they’re lesbians”.

LOGLINE: Carol is a 2015 romantic period drama film directed by Todd Haynes. The screenplay by Phyllis Nagy is based on the 1952 romance novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (republished as Carol in 1990). The film stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, and Kyle Chandler. Set in New York City during the early 1950s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce.

"Dreaming of You" (1995): SELENA - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}31 Aug 202301:46:58

In our part 2 episode of Selena’s “Dreaming of You” (1995), Angie and Steffi break down the era. We discuss Selena’s journey to what would’ve been major crossover success, her murder, the legacy she paved for other Latin crossover acts and how the Estate has managed the Selena brand.

In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we discuss the obstacles Selena faced to make her first English album, crossing over as a Mexican-American artist, fan clubs in the 90s, her impact on Latin music artists today, and of course, her death.

Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

We hope you enjoyed our Selena “Dreaming of You” journey. RIP Selena.

Album Info: Dreaming of You is the fifth and final studio album by American singer Selena. Released posthumously on July 18, 1995, by EMI Latin and EMI Records, it was an immediate commercial and critical success, debuting atop the United States Billboard 200—the first predominately Spanish-language album to do so. It sold 175,000 copies on its first day of release in the U.S.—a then-record for a female vocalist. With first week sales of 331,000 units, it became the second-highest first-week sales for a female musician since Nielsen Soundscan began monitoring album sales in 1991. Billboard magazine declared it a "historic" event, while Time said the recording elevated Selena's music to a wider audience. It won Album of the Year at the 1996 Tejano Music Awards and Female Pop Album of the Year at the 3rd annual Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Diva 101: ARETHA FRANKLIN - Performances, Pop Culture Moments & Songs You NEED to Know {Part 2}19 Jul 202301:10:05

Continuing with our Diva 101 on Aretha Franklin, Angie and Steffi share their favorite Aretha Franklin live performances and pop culture moments. We also share Aretha Franklin songs you MUST know, our personal faves, and underrated gems in her catalog.

Our Diva 101 episodes are a general overview of a classic diva’s career and a very basic introduction to the diva. These OG divas helped define how we think of the term “diva”. They are the blueprints. The architects. And without them, a lot of the divas that we talk about would cease to exist. (Le gasp!) The goal of Diva 101s is to introduce a diva and give a general overview of who they are: their influences, their career, who they would eventually go on to influence, and most importantly, why they matter in the Diva Pantheon.

This is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you go back and listen to part 1 where we discuss Aretha’s career timeline and make diva connections to the past & present divas.

Diva Info: Aretha Louise Franklin was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. Referred to as the "Queen of Soul", Rolling Stone twice named her as the greatest singer, and the ninth-greatest artist of all time. With global sales of over 75 million records, Franklin is one of the world's best-selling music artists.

"Ray of Light" (1998): MADONNA - Era Review | Diva Discography {Part 2}28 Jun 202301:34:32

In our part 2 episode of Madonna’s “Ray of Light” (1998) celebration, Angie and Steffi break down the era. We discuss the “material girl to spiritual girl” narrative, motherhood, and why this may arguably be our favorite Madonna era.

In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era’s ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we discuss how Madonna was in her “spiritual girl/finding myself” era, her infamous VMA performance, cultural appropriation and how “Ray of Light” ultimately solidified Madonna’s legitimacy as an artist.

Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track.

We hope you enjoyed our Madonna “Ray of Light” journey!

Album Info: Ray of Light is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released in early 1998 by Maverick Records. A major stylistic and aesthetical departure from her previous work, Bedtime Stories, Ray of Light is an electronica and techno-pop record which incorporates multiple genres, including ambient, trip hop, art pop, psychedelic music and Middle Eastern music, while also seeing Madonna singing with greater breadth and a fuller tone. Mystical themes are also strongly present in both the music and lyrics, as a result of Madonna embracing Kabbalah, her study of Hinduism and Buddhism, and her daily practice of Ashtanga yoga.

In this episode, Angie and Steffi talk all about the “Carol” era in Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara’s career. This is part 1 of 2 of our era breakdown episodes, and part 2 of 3 of our “Carol” episodes.

We discuss what was going on at their careers during this time and how the roles of Carol & Therese ultimately contribute to their onscreen personas. We then get into Patricia Highsmith and tackle two big, controversial questions concerning “Carol”: 1) Is it okay for straight actresses to play lesbians onscreen? 2) Is Carol a predatory lesbian?

LOGLINE: Carol is a 2015 romantic period drama film directed by Todd Haynes. The screenplay by Phyllis Nagy is based on the 1952 romance novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (republished as Carol in 1990). The film stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, and Kyle Chandler. Set in New York City during the early 1950s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce.

Diva Headlines #4: RIP Tina Turner, Unpopular Beyoncé Renaissance Tour Opinions, the Whitney Houston Biopic...and Kylie Minogue's PADAM PADAM14 Jun 202301:28:52

Padam? Padam.

In this episode, Angie & Steffi do another round of Diva Headlines and get into what’s been happening in the DCU - the Diva Cinematic Universe.

We discuss the passing of legendary performer Tina Turner and the complicated legacy of the iconic film “What’s Love Got to Do With It”. Then, by popular demand, we continue our discussion on some of the touring divas - namely Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour and Janet Jackson’s Together Again Tour. And plot twist: we have an unpopular Renaissance Tour opinion.

Because this movie came out during our hiatus, we DRAGGG the Whitney Houston biopic and breakdown why we hated it. Spoiler Alert: It rhymes with Rat Rhouston. Angie also shares her thoughts on the constant public scrutiny that Chloe x Halle face & the strange revisionist history, and she also gives a review on TLC’s newest Lifetime documentary.

And also - we discuss the Meme Song of the Summer: Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam”.
