| John Robins: the many moods of podcasting, mental health, and Wordle (Elis & John / How Do You Cope / Howl) #608 | 05 Mar 2025 | 01:14:55 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by comic and podcaster and friend to us all, JOHN ROBINS! A naturally evolving podcast which goes from subject to subject while remaining focused and sober at all times. It's almost as if the two people being recorded are podcast professionals. What kicks things off though is a very interesting and revealing chat about mental health, considering the potential saturation with the constant pursuit of happiness (and 'optimisation fatigue'). Elsewhere you'll be treated to a rundown of ways John is similar to Pip, separating the Crossfit politics from the actual actions which are - all said and done - body movements, a good chunk on Wordle (so prepare for that if you are done with Wordle!), politics, toxic podcasting, time anxiety and the benefits thereof, and the joy of Lou Sanders! Because almost all of the world's issues can be solved by enjoying Lou Sanders. And Bonnie Prince Billy, which John and many of us (producer Buddy typing this...!) share. A ton to enjoy. Get started! | Florence Pugh (We Live In Time / Midsommar / Don't Worry Darling) • Friday Rewind | 28 Feb 2025 | 01:14:49
emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Florence Pugh, originally episode 188 from 2018-02-07. Original writeup below! ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– A powerful conversation, full of energy and positivity and just pure satisfying goodness for your podcast enjoyment, as Pip and Florence get right down to it and cover everything from said favourite film Lady Macbeth (surely you’ve seen that by now and if not, amend that!), the subtle differences behind the scenes of indie and blockbuster films and merits of the former, the backlog of projects and the weirdness of doing promo several years after, her attitude towards nudity in film roles and how the media handles it versus how she handles it, her upcoming role as Paige in Fighting With My Family and the insane logistics of that, the dichotomy of murder on screen and nudity on screen and how it seems society in general is far more comfortable seeing violence, the female perspective as a director as opposed the male gaze, growing up in a loud family and her acting history and last but certainly not least, a pitch from she and Pip for a combined role in Peaky Blinders. How can they lose? One’s thing’s for sure - you won’t, so get yourself comfy and listen in won’t you! PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | TV Shows Of The Year 2024: featuring John & Joel of The Dream Factory #603 | 29 Jan 2025 | 01:09:02
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! An episode celebrating the past year of television, from streamers to terrestrials - it's TV Of The Year 2024 with Joe & Joel! (Producer Buddy here - I've once again recklessly recycled a previous writeup for this one because my original is still entirely apt - dates have changed for obvious reasons but otherwise - enjoy the timewarp!) Another delightful end of year TV roundup from three people who truly know and care about their televisual diet. These are names you can trust, folks. You might know John and Joel from their own film podcast called Dream Factory (the world's greatest user-generated movie creation podcast), which Pip is a true fan of and contributor to, but if not, here is your chance to get to know them and become fast friends! This podcast goes appropriately deep into the television shows of the year in a hugely positive way, but of course you'll hear about some of the trials and tribulations of being such big devourers of content - the endless options of platforms, the accessibility of them all, and everything else... But really it's a perfect way to get up to speed on the things you might have missed, and also hear people chat about the shows that we all loved throughout the year. Who knows what 2025 has in store for us... But really - who cares? This is 2024 right here! ENJOY! PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | Psychedelics w/ Andy Mitchell • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #533 | 26 Sep 2023 | 01:00:12
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by neuropsychologist and author ANDY MITCHELL! A wildly interesting chat with Pip about not just the broad area of psychedelics, but the culture surrounding them and some of the modern spins on it all that we might be encountering on our travels. With all the wide world of psychedelics, it's really fascinating to hear about the side that sometimes doesn't get looked at, and to get some light shone on it with a slightly different perspective. A refreshing and neutral take too, without a huge amount of baggage hitched onto the wagon. Loads of angles, ideas and takes in fact, so definitely add this to your greater explorations! | Otto Baxter • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #532 | 19 Sep 2023 | 00:53:13
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by actor and director OTTO BAXTER! ...and joined by PETER BEARD and BRUCE FLETCHER of course. The trio here are responsible for the horror film 'The Puppet Asylum', and the documentary about Otto and the making of said film, 'Otto Baxter: Not A F*cking Horror Story'. Otto lives with Down Syndrome, which is of course not the main focus of this ace human but something that has had an affect on his world since birth. It's a great thing to hear about the making of the feature and the documentary, and a cool way of looking at such a creative outpouring. In this chat you hear the loud and proud Otto himself and from the directors involved who make a great pyramid of setup, explanation, discussion and general fun. At times you might notice that it's not the most calm, meditative and laidback ride BUT please don't let that draw you away - it's a really cool look at the world of Otto and the worlds Otto has created. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by actor, writer and comic ANDI OSHO! Another delightful time right here for you, as Pip and Andi catch up and get right into all things of interest quickly and with no hesitation. So much ground gets covered and it's all super inspiring, including bodies and minds and neuroplasticity, dealing with energies at school, earnestness and not feeling the cynicism, spending time being out of touch with pop music, logic puzzles of standup, bookwriting mechanics, winning the room and acting on the whole - as well as all that amazing connective tissue that comes with it... A great time so do not pass this one up. DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS WEBSTORE Hosted on Acast. | Susan Wokoma • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #530 | 05 Sep 2023 | 01:00:33
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by actor and writer and second time guest SUSAN WOKOMA! A true delight right here as Susan jumps back in the DPP game for another sureshot episode, and as you'll hear - and as you'd expect - in about 6 years or so SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED. But also, reassuringly there's a lot left on the side so this bodes well for a third appearance in the future...! Amongst the goodness you can expect from Susan in this Grade A ep, we get to hear about her strut, her younger days Helen Mirren obsession, the enforced scarcity mentality of women in the industry, industry dissillusionment, being comfortable in her body, Cheaters, life re-evaluations, the turning point of reductive and weird feedback, pride in comedic acting, how tough comedic acting is, working with the awesome Deborah Frances-White and the importance of passion. Jewels and gems to be gained especially if you're someone involved in the industry or considering it. Go back and peep the first ep if you missed it! ENJOY! | Josh Pugh • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #529 | 29 Aug 2023 | 00:58:11
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by comic excellence and ace human being JOSH PUGH! One of those geniunely organic episodes which seems to form from the ground up and find a rhythm and pace all of its own. A lovely look into the mind of Josh, who specialises in comedy and standup but with a very social approach, which feels like it stems from his work in the social sector over the years. That comes up later which is fascinating and really great to hear about, but expect to hear everything from the other points of his life, including his recent Fringe work in progress run, to the origins and roots in comedy, vision impairment, social media, people who "crack the algorithm" and all the other things it takes to be a part of the comedy world. Great stuff, and very inspiring. Enjoy! ALSO - Pip indicates this in the intro but just in case, there's a little 5 minute bonus with Blindboy around halfway through the ep. All will make sense. And it's much fun. DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Shaggy • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #528 | 22 Aug 2023 | 00:51:00 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by dancehall champion and superstar reggae musician SHAGGY! Very broadly speaking, a lot of you will know Shaggy as Mr Boombastic, or the guy who did Oh Carolina and It Wasn't Me. But dig a little deeper and there are worlds of releases and shows and all sorts of stories from the past that are just too exciting and interesting to pass up on... And that's what makes this last minute convo with Pip and Shaggy so awesome! It's the stories behind the hits that are amazing, and the historical signifigance of them too. But in that world, of course there will be all kinds of run-ins, collabos, tales and amazing anecdotes, and Shaggy delivers on all counts. So whether you're a full on dancehall reggae appreciator or someone who remembers the name, don't miss this one - it's super entertaining and a fascinating trip from start to end. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by rapper, podcaster, producer, showmaker and all round multi-hyphenate OPEN MIKE EAGLE! This one's what they call a kinda 'special request' episode, where - to break the 4th wall - I (Buddy ✌🏼) suggested to Pip about getting Mike on again. Mike's been on before but YEARRRS ago and while his episode is obviously well worth checking, this is the more up to date one being a good 8 years after! And so much has happened in those years... New albums, a podcast network containing a bunch of series of awesome podcasts, a show, Twitch, a pandemic, and to quote Mike, "anime, trauma and divorce". Not all of these are in this episode but ya know, it all goes in the stew somewhere doesn't it. A lovely episode and Mike's always a treat - expect a good old fashioned catch up with many tangents within. ENJOY! And listen to all the stuff - and Mike's on Patreon too, links are below >>> DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. A treat for sure, as always with Lou, as we catch up on a bunch of life stuff and cool happenings in her world including healers, spiritual goings on, her past life as a band member, face biting, book writing, growing up in Thanet, sweat lodges, cultural appropriation, marriage and relationships, the concept of 'enough', living a playboy lifestyle and memory. A ton to dive into and all mixed seamlessly like a conversation mixtape. | Josie Long • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #525 | 01 Aug 2023 | 01:06:46
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined for the second time in many years by comic star and friend of the show JOSIE LONG! It's been a bunch of years since Josie last joined the Distraction Pieces Podcast, and only through reasons of busy-ness and life's carousel is it that we haven't seen a return for a bit. Well it's a welcome reunion as, with all reunion episodes, so much life has happened in the interviening years. Josie's now a 2x mother, and has had a film out (both incidents we are brought up to speed on), but there's a bunch of other bits and pieces too. Existential and present, political and social, interior and exterior, neurotypical and neurodiverse, and swimming! Prepare to catch up on all of it, as Josie brings the uniquely great energy and green lights to the table. ENJOY! DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | Sasha Lane • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #524 | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:44:42
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the truly fabulous acting star SASHA LANE! By now you will have surely seen at least one of Sasha's starring roles in Loki, American Honey, How To Blow Up A Pipeline or presently The Crowded Room - but if not, you'll absolutely want to go and check on what Sasha's up to after hearing this chat. While mainly focusing on the matter at hand which is the last two projects (Pipeline and Crowded, for brevity), you'll hear a ton about Sasha's process, working relationships and working boundaries, and all that comes with the work on screen. There's such a lot happening on said screen and behind the scenes so it's great to get an honest perspective on things, which is what Sasha truly delivers. * BUDDY NOTE! The sound on Sasha's side is a little tricky sometimes and at worst, a little hard to make out. I've done a fair job and retained what I could, but this was the only option we had - luckily our ears are tough little things and can get used to this sort of stuff, but apologies for a slightly less easy listen than you've become accustomed to. Just wanted to let you know that's all. XX DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Below is the original writeup for context: ––––––––––––––––––––––––– A great Friday spot for you this week, as Pip sits down with director Coralie Fargeat and actor Matilda Lutz, creator and star of the indie horror film ‘Revenge’. All kinds of aspects are covered including of course the main elements of the film itself, the process of working with a smaller budget and the knock-on effects that has (and the imagination it inspires), crossings of languages and how it can help with an international release, dealing with foreign distributors, the audition process, darker entertainment from directors such as David Cronenberg, the film set out in Morocco and working in the cold, working with that amount of blood in such a small space (I’m sure a lot of horror fans’ ears just pricked up!), trusting the audience with your world and the importance of the director and actor relationship. And a lot more. A packed episode then, you could say! ENJOY! And go see the film if you get an opportunity… PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | Lloyd Griffith • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #522 | 18 Jul 2023 | 01:13:45
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the Grimsby comic legend LLOYD GRIFFITH! You'll know Lloyd from hus various outings and aboutings, and maybe more prominently from Soccer AM - but that is far from the extent of Lloyd's talents of course. You might catch him out on the road casually tearing down arenas with Jack Whitehall, of which you'll hear all about right here - including some very pertinent thoughts on the actual realistics of playing huge venues as opposed to smaller ones. In fact you'll hear a lot of this, various thoughts and perspectives on comedy and the behind the scenes of it all that you don't really hear a lot of. There's also some very interesting Edinburgh Fringe stuff too which offers a lot that you might not hear in the usual spots. And community, and football. Anyway - enjoy it all, and if you don't know Lloyd yet, as always with Distraction Pieces, prepare to make a new pal. Enjoy! Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the amazing action superstar POM KLEMENTIEFF! An absolute treat of an episode as we meet Pom in full fighting form, ready for a full on packed conversation branching out onto so much of her inspiring career but leaving enough for next time too! Basically - the surface is scratched but the iceberg has much below the surface, to smash a couple of metaophors together. Pom's been involved in a lot of cinema and always delivers huge performances, obviously including Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, but along with the Guardians films, Suicide Squad, Westworld and loads more. Everything including process, hopes and dreams, basketball games with Spike Lee, working with Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise, and SO much more. Seriously - if you don't know Pom yet, get to know. | Rhys James • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #520 | 04 Jul 2023 | 01:11:44
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the excellent and always funny comic RHYS JAMES! You'll have encountered Rhys on a variety of TV goodies over the years, and surely have caught a live show or two along the way, but this is a perfect chance to join in on a catch up with he and Pip in good old fashioned podcast form. It's a great one which branches out onto all sorts of tangents as a good podcast is known to do, from process, to live shows, to the eternal conflict of the advertsing dollar versus artistic integrity, to the Fringe, to the effects of blowing up on TV and how it shapes an audience, and just about everything in between. A proper in depth one and super fun, and lovely to hear Rhys quoting Pip tracks along the way too! Who could be mad at that. ENJOY! | Pride Film Club • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #519 | 27 Jun 2023 | 00:48:04
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is flying solo to bring you some cinematic hits and favourites for PRIDE FILM CLUB! A straight from the heart celebration of queer joy and cinema for this episode, folks. I'm sure this goes without saying but if this presents an issue for you, we might suggest proceeding with an open heart to broaden to your love for humanity. But failing that - with all due respect - this isn't really the home for you. As with Pip's sibling podcasts for the Films Of The Year, these picks of the LGBTQ+ variety are from Pip, and not speaking for every single person, nor are they selections that dismiss all other cinema! But they will definitely provide you with a wonderful dip into the rainbow of film that's out there and has been operating for maybe longer than you might think. Some you will know, maybe some you won't, but keep a writing utensil handy as there isn't a list for this - you're gonna have to follow along, old skool style. Enjoy and be well, and Happy Pride to you all! DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by comic, author and actor BRIDGET CHRISTIE! A really lovely chat and catch up (and missing piece of the long-term Distraction Pieces puzzle) with Pip and Bridget, which comes at a perfect time in sync with Bridget's new series on Channel 4 'The Change'. You'll hear all about the amazing process of getting it off the ground and what else is involved in getting pitches picked and developed (it's a side of the industry which is by no means an easy world), but in hearing about The Change you'll also get a perfect insight into the greater universe of Bridget and where she's at currently. It's all a perfect confluence and meeting of a lot of experience, life and timing, and the timing is all pretty much perfect it seems. | Trevor & Simon • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #517 | 13 Jun 2023 | 01:13:57
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the all time Saturday morning TV comedy duo TREVOR & SIMON! "Never again, boys..." Of course, that description is nothing if not reductive, as they have done so much over the years that is way more than just that - but I think a good, hefty wedge of us will have become fast friends with the two from seeing them over multiple Saturday mornings on Going Live or Live & Kicking. Well, if your question is "...but what are they doing now?" - you're about to find out, along with all the other stuff you may not know or have never been told. They're a lovely pair, and what they do comes from a lovely place with good vibes and a progressive mindset, which - when you think back to what they were doing - was always present and shining through. From their Manchester days to the prop-comedy work to the present day, enjoy this delightful catchup with the lovely lads. Oh, and the origin of Swing Your Pants (probably should have started here with that). DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | Dr Nishant Joshi • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #516 | 06 Jun 2023 | 01:08:53
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by doctor and musician NISHANT JOSHI! You might fancy including 'whistleblower' in that description too but only if you use it in the appropriate manner okay? Dr Nishant has been a busy person in ever so many ways since the pandemic began around a quarter of a decade ago (to give it that sense of close history), being a doctor on the frontline during one of the biggest health emergencies of our lifetimes. Included in that busy-ness though is how he drew attention to a PPE issue in the healthcare system, which in turn brough on its own worries, gaslighting, doublespeak, intimidation and just plain strangeness - it was a rough time but a period which ultimately led to some hugely important changes along the way. You'll hear all about it, but also Nishant touches on his punk music interests and band work, alongside being a parent too. So much going on - join Pip and Dr Nishant for a thorough recounting! | Jon Ronson • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #515 | 30 May 2023 | 00:59:56
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by national treasure and rabbit hole journalist, author and podcaster JON RONSON! Rabbit-hole journalist is of course used in loving jest, as he kind of says the same himself in the course of the podcast. Jon loves a rabbit hole. And it's evident in his work which is pure story-upon-story heaven for the curious minded among us, which will of course appeal to those with a liking for Louis Theroux, Adam Curtis and Nick Broomfield for instance - but Jon has carved his own niche in the world of journalism and in depth investigation, making unique findings and bringing huge amounts of wild and interesting material to the forefront of culture. So make some time to hear what Jon's been up to, the process, the work, the revelations and the reality behind the whole Ronson machine. And definitely check out his new series on Audible, 'The Debutante'. You'll love it, for certain. DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | Balmer (autism, parenting, Twitch) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #514 | 23 May 2023 | 01:12:56
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Twitch legend BALMER to talk all things parenting and indeed, Twitch! The term 'Twitch legend' is doing all sorts of work there, and for those uninitiated, you may need some assistance. Twitch is the livestreaming platform for people to either observe or take part in art, sports, gaming, music, every conceivable activity that can be filmed essentially. Within appropriate broadcast law, obvs. Gaming happens to be Balmer's chosen discipline (with some improv and role play in there too), and as one of Pip's favourite streamers there must be a reason for him to guest on DPP right? Correct. Balmer is not only a truly unique gamer with a wild and memorable presence, he is also a parent of an autistic son. He and Pip catch up on everything involved with that part of the story, which is fascinating and inspiring, shedding light on the 'system' as we know it, and how it works with and against this area of neurodivergence. While the episode does deal with parenting and Twitch, those who are not parents nor Twitch afficionados may be confident in knowing it's a lovely episode with warmth and awesomeness throughout. Maybe you don't know the name (yet) - but trust that it's a lovely ep. DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Films Of The Year 2024: Pip's personal roundup of 2024's finest films #602 | 22 Jan 2025 | 01:03:16 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip continues the Distraction Pieces tradition of appraising the cinematic output of the year just passed - it's Films Of The Year 2024! A thorough and - crucially - personal rundown of all that happened last year in the world of feature films, major and independent, big screen and small screen. The whole thing was recorded outside in the dead of Winter, so by all means don't feel like you need to mimic those surroundings. This is probably more suitable for a warm and dry environment at your leisure, but wherever you choose it's a nice way to look back in fondness on a really great year in films. It's obvious but it must be re-emphasised each year - this is not YOUR list of favourite films. It is Pip's. if Pip makes a choice, this does not remove your own choice. It does not mean you are wrong in your own choices. You know this already but you'd be surprised at how some folks might misinterpret these things. It's all love in here. Enjoy, make some notes, rewatch some goodies and maybe make some new acquaintances in the bargain. ENJOY! PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Florence & Reed from the almighty COME CURIOUS podcast! Of course, the podcast is one aspect of both of their wide and varied skillset, but it's a hugely important and awesome element - even in terms of reframing 'sex positive' as 'sex honest'. Florence and Reed have been making power moves in the world of sex work, including being active within it, fighting for rights and equality, and ensuring that things don't get misrepresented and blurry along the way. As you'll hear, the work they do is not easy by any means. It is a fascinating chat tho, as we hear about their road to podcasting, how to navigate relationships as podcasters and sex workers, the difference between attraction and appreciation (and how they may blend), having a tangible item out in the world (a book) vs making invisible art (podcasts), and a huge amount of other goodness along the way. Nothing too graphic here but perhaps if you're playing in the presence of younger folk, it could be worth being around for occasional explanations! ENJOY - it's a lovely one. | James Acaster • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #512 | 09 May 2023 | 01:17:16
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by show favourite, renowned comic and now grand producer JAMES ACASTER! Some might consider this a kind of trojan horse episode, in that it's not wall to wall "Let's talk about comedy and Taskmaster" - no, this time, Pip catches up with James about his new role as producer and orchestrator behind the new sprawling music project 'Temps'! The project itself is a truly adventurous step to bring together a ton of different worlds, but revolving around a main concept of everyone being a unique and necessary presence on the album. Highly regarded rappers and musicians coming together in ways that even us fans would be refreshingly surprised by. It features so prominently in this episode because don't forget - Pip comes from this world, but has also been a fan and friend of James' for many years now, so if you're feeling wary of hearing the comic you like talking about an album of music, leave that wariness at the door and put your faith in the podcast. It's excellent stuff, and there's some acting and TV bits at the end too of cours! Have fun! Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the awesome writer, podcaster, curator and film critic ANNA BOGUTSKAYA! Hopefully you will know Anna and her prolific works at this point but in the event that you've been caught napping, this is a perfect introduction to the encyclopedic film lover herself... This is the perfect episode for all cinephiles, covering so many elements of the on-screen universe and much of the psychology behind it which will absolutely prove for a truly enjoyable listen. From being an interviewer vs interviewed, to the importance of listening and reacting, how the viewing position changes depending on what you're viewing for, switching up a shy nature, extolling the virtues of the horror genre, how the rules are different according to gender norms, and of course her incredible new book 'Unlikeable Female Characters'. It goes without saying that Anna is 100% likeable so please, listen and enjoy. DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature ALL ANNA LINKS Hosted on Acast. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Drunkast and Hardcore Listing mates CHRIS & STU! The theme of this week is simple but has vast potential for pure world building... Pip invited Chris and Stu along to do some good old fashioned stuntcasting - where you basically re-cast films and TV shows with a cast of your own assemblage. The results? Chaotic and amazing. But ALWAYS grounds for debate and good old fashioned chat. A whole episode's worth, at that! So give yourself over to the casting agents of the Drunkast squadron (this isn't a Drunkast but, ya know) and let them re-envision, in front your eyes, Thundercats, The Breakfast Club and The A-Team. Good fun for all. ENJOY! | Johnny Harris • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #509 | 18 Apr 2023 | 01:07:41
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the warm, ace and uplifting actor JOHNNY HARRIS! Johnny's been incredibly busy over the last few decades, as a quick glimpse at his storied IMDB page will display. So of course you can expect to hear a ton of good old fashioned acting chat right here. But on top of that, you'll also be treated to a ton of good old fashioned friendly and uplifting back and forth too. Johnny's interests and skills go beyond acting, so you'll hear about his boxing origins which fed into the film 'Jawbone', his music love which led him to meeting and working with his heroes (Whoever said "Don't meet your heroes" maaay have just had a terrible experience with theirs? Just a thought...), and just a proper full episode of awesomeness. Jump in and enjoy, you certainly shall. DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature Hosted on Acast. | John Kearns • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #508 | 11 Apr 2023 | 01:01:12
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the excellent and hilarious comic JOHN KEARNS! You might know John from his appearances on Taskmaster. You might know John from his memorable appearance on stage as a comedian (rocking the false teeth and wig). But here's a perfect chance to get to know John as the human behind it all, the master at the controls. It's a brilliant chat which covers all the ground you would hope for, but also offers some fascinating insight into what goes on behind the "mask" - and what is a "mask" anyway? Some really interesting ground for discussion but also all the tangents, fun and stray observations you would want too, including crowd and audience attitude, and cadence. Lotsa cadence. Lovely stuff - enjoy! DON'T FORGET PIP ON PATREON if you're of a supporting nature JOHN on FILMS TO BE BURIED WITH Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Drunk Women Solving Crime • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #507 | 04 Apr 2023 | 01:03:06 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by veteran true crime comedy podcast trio DRUNK WOMEN SOLVING CRIME! ...of course the three women in question who form the trio have names - Taylor, Hannah and Catie - and all three are here to chat all things podcasts, origin stories and more! A lot more, by the way. It's a joy to hear the team catch up and talk about all the things that maybe even people who listen to DWSC aren't up to speed on, and so it's a great ep for people who are full on fans as well as those uninitiated. But those who fall into the latter category will be rapidly converted, so prepare to add another podcast to your agenda. True crime fans - rejoice! You're in for so many treats. Hosted on Acast. | Rou Reynolds • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #506 | 28 Mar 2023 | 00:59:02
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Enter Shikari's ROU REYNOLDS! ...and if you remember all the way back to episode 27 where Rou made his debut on Distraction Pieces, you will know that his name is pronounced "Rou like cow, not Rou like moo". But that aside - we welcome back Rou, in this excellent episode which delves into so much more than music. Situating ourselves immediately in the surroundings of Pip's old uni town of Wolverhampton, we hear about everything including politics and how to transmit that as a band, being a frontperson and the emotional toll, gender hangups and new arguments within, the Overton Window (see links below if unfamiliar), the creative drought of the pandemic, and of course MUSIC! Burying the lead there! So enjoy this welcome return and share freely - as with all episodes - you as a listener form a very important part of the Distraction Pieces chain. Nice one and big love as always. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Brandon Cronenberg • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #505 | 22 Mar 2023 | 00:37:09 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by director BRANDON CRONENBERG! If half of that name rings bells to those of you not versed too hard in the cinema world, you are indeed correct - Brandon's father is David, who you will surely be familiar with in some way! Brandon's been carving a unique niche in the horror scene with some truly psychedelic adventures in the genre, and you'll be happy to know that he goes into a lot of the technique in this chat with Pip. Honestly, you couldn't have guessed some of this stuff - and better yet, it's all in-camera (basically meaning, not computer FX). So prepare for some fantastic process talk, greater ideas within the films, and some nice action for those who saw and loved Possessor, Infinity Pool and the rest in the catalogue. As always with these chats which may seem specifically bound to a certain discipline - if you are creative in any way, or enjoy creativity - you will absolutely get a lot from this. So fear not, horror fan or otherwise - you'll love it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Bisha K. Ali • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #504 | 15 Mar 2023 | 01:19:07 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the incredible screenwriter BISHA K. ALI! An absolute must listen episode, firstly for those interested and invested in the acting and cinema/television kingdom, but also for those who want to hear a straight up brilliant episode full of honesty, truth and heart. Of course you get the shop talk - process, creativity, the whole science of it all (and the Marvel multiverse of course)- which is amazing in itself, but you also get some wondefully vulnerable and soulful thoughts and experiences on mental health, diversity, and how this ties everything together in a much more macro sense. It actually plays out like a perfect screenplay in many ways, which is no surprise. I mean. It's Bisha K. Ali! Enjoy, take notes, listen fully. Hosted on Acast. emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Limmy, originally episode 113 (a two parter) from 2016-08-31. Below is the original writeup for context: ––––––––––––––––––––––––– Congratulations on your download. You have made the correct choice. Especially being that this week the guest is comedy giant Brian "Limmy" Limond! A perfect back and forth with Glasgow's comic mastermind Limmy (and on occasion, mainly forth as Pip joins us, the listener, and lets Limmy hold court!), combing through the action packed origin story and leading us right up to around the present day, exposing the thrilling fun times as well as revealing the deep dark lows in a thoroughly down to earth fashion, including drink, fatherhood and all that entails. Such a powerful and relatable talk, and definitely one for the Limmy heads as well as those who are perhaps unfamiliar with the man behind 'Limmy's Show' and 'Daft Wee Stories' among so much more... | Natalia Tena • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #503 | 08 Mar 2023 | 00:57:36
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the brilliant actor and musician NATALIA TENA! The instant connection that will be of note to Distraction Pieces Network followers, is that Natalia starred next to Brett Goldstein in Superbob - which hopefully you will have seen by now! BUT - consider that something of a sidebar to this conversation as here, we get to hear everything about Natalia in a solo capacity. From boat life, to mind opening Patagonia journeys, to dream jobs and being part of film crews almost like a family, her band and how the tale began and unfolds, accordions, Harry Potter, John Wick, and the whole acting science in general. Amazing stuff and a brilliant look at what Natalia's been up to and is about to do - listen in! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Saul Williams & Anisia Uzeyman • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #502 | 01 Mar 2023 | 01:02:28 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the duo of incredible poet and filmmaker SAUL WILLIAMS and stellar actor and playwright ANISIA UZEYMAN! Saul is back on the Distraction Pieces couch for his second appearance in the show's history (first time was incredible), and as you can well imagine, you're in for treats galore. Not only that, you can double up on said treats by adding the wonderful Anisia Uzeyman into the mix, as the two drop science in an orderly fashion! A huge amount of perspective, viewpoint and opinion which you will definitely enjoy being in on, but also you'll hear about their film Neptune Frost. If you haven't seen or heard about the film, for goodness sake look at the trailer for some context - it's incredible, and will give a perfect foundation for ths chat with the makers. Or better yet - watch the film. Fans of Saul will heavily appreciate this, and if you're familiar with the work of Anisia you'll love it. And all rounded up with some glorious hip hop anecdotery in case you forgot who you were dealing with here. ENJOY! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| Ask Pip • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #501 | 22 Feb 2023 | 00:47:35 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is flying solo to answer a flurry of questions from YOU, the listeners and viewers! In keeping with Distraction Pieces tradition, Pip likes to have a week to himself from time to time and here we are, deep in mid-February, to open up the mailbag. Even saying 'mailbag' is such a nostalgia trigger for most of us. Didn't that kind of thing die out not long after the 90's arrived? What was it replaced by? Maybe that should have been my question for this episode. Anyway - expect a nice gathering of input from friends and fans and long/medium/short term listeners, with light shed on various topics from music to film to Twitch to everything besides. Just don't ask when we can expect more music. Deal? Deal. Enjoy episode 501, the denim edition. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
| DPP Episode 500! (Part 2 of 2) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #500 | 17 Feb 2023 | 01:09:22 | |
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Join Pip and producer Buddy Peace in a 'quincentenary' celebration as the podcast reaches episode 500! PART 2 of 2! Pip and myself don't often sit down and recount the archives of the Distraction Pieces Podcast in an official capacity. We might refer back to episodes here and there, or talk in a bizarre shorthand only decipherable by us about certain prior events and occurances in the past. But this time we sat down and recorded a whole epic feature length episode of us doing the damn thing and here is part 2 of the double drop! It was a pleasure and delight, and a real treat to give some context to this ongoing project which drops every Wednesday (and sometimes more), and find a space to stop, check in, celebrate, be still for a moment and look at what's happened over the years. Turns out A LOT HAS HAPPENED. But you would expect that right? So here it is, the second of two full conversations with me (Buddy Peace) and Pip, peppered with comments and questions from listeners throughout. This could even be a good first listen for some folks if they haven't heard it before, actually - definitely a huge amount of "Oh I'm listening that THAT one straight after this" type stuff. Enjoy, and huge love to you all for being with us and supporting the Distraction Pieces Podcast. Love ya. XXX PS: I looked up 'quincentenary' and everything. Hosted on Acast. | Darren McGarvey aka Loki • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #499 | 08 Feb 2023 | 01:07:01
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Glasgow-based rapper, author and activist DARREN McGARVEY aka LOKI! A thoroughly engaging and informative chat to light a fire under you right here, as Pip connects with Darren and jumps in the deep end from the very start! That's how we like it. It's actually perfect because Darren has a lot to say, all of which is guided towards society and shining a light on some of the sides of it that often get left in the shadows, ignored, or basically hidden from public view. He has skin in the game too, having lived in a part of Glasgow which hasn't always been what you might consider the safest part of town, and with alcoholism in the family, so it comes as no surprise that there's a feeling of catharthis in his quest to enlighten and create positivity in his work. Speaking of work, you can catch Darren on road not long after this podcast releases, and also make sure you peep his rap music which is proper too. Very sick stuff. A definite companion episode to previous guests such as Akala, Rutger Bregman and Emma Dabiri to name a few. THE SOCIAL DISTANCE BETWEEN US Hosted on Acast. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by acting superhero AMAR CHADHA-PATEL! Hopefully you will have encountered Disney+'s 'Willow' by now (previously known as the enigmatic 'UNTITLED DISNEYPLUS PROJECT'), or perhaps even the movie 'Dashcam' - if not, and you're yet to become familiar with Amar, this is a wonderful opportunity to make a fast friend and discover someone who you'll certainly want to keep up on... This is an awesome chat with Pip and Amar, which covers his beginnings working with the All Saints brand and hustling music videos, leading to Bestival projects at which he made first contact with Pip, set design and direction, various intricate tax issues and Twitter storms, process, enjoyment and happiness on set, and how to mature within a complex and unique industry. You'll pick up some true gems along the way but more importantly, hear an uninterrupted chat which you'll thoroughly enjoy. Get yourself started! Hosted on Acast. | William Regal • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #496 | 18 Jan 2023 | 01:18:46
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by English professional wrestler WILLIAM REGAL! A true wrestling fans dream right here, but as always with these slightly more specific episodes, this is definitely not one strictly for the wrestlers... William Regal is a lovely guest and a treat to have on the podcast, and you can clearly hear the joy in Pip's voice when the two get to speaking. Those who are familiar will know about his character and his long road within the wrestling ring and outside it, and here you get a front row chance to hear about everything - the character choices and how he formulated the person you see up there, his original desires to be a wrestler, comedian or clown, Blackpool roots, analogies to the 'bad guy' characters in comedy, how to work with crowds, being a pro, doing the work, and retaining a humble but proud and highly skilled presence in and out of that ring. It will definitely appeal to anyone in the creative arts, as there are elements of which we all share and find common ground on. Some valuable meditations on time and being a grown adult too, which we can all benefit from. Lovely stuff for both wrestling addicts and those who are a clean slate! Hosted on Acast.
